ELECTRIC PENCILS COME TO THE POINT!
New London garage-rock duo THE ELECTRIC PENCILS have unveiled a new video, launching their debut album, released this week!
‘Extra Curricular’ is taken from the self-titled album, which is available to download from their Bandcamp page. A vinyl release will follow. The video was directed by John Milmo.
Formed in late 2014 by vocalist/guitarist Ben Edge and drummer/bassist Steve Coley from THEE SPIVS, the duo recorded the album over a four-day period on a Zoom 16-track. Speaking exclusively to Vive Le Rock, Edge says, “We wanted to make an album that captured our live energy. I wrote all the songs over about a year period. Except for the song ‘What Do You Know About Me’ that was written by me, Steve and a friend of ours called Jan Blumentrath over a year ago.
“The video was shot on the rooftop of my brothers studio. Its on an old street round the back of Spitalfields market that will soon be lost to new developments. It really is a one of a kind and like stepping in to another era and the whole street has an eerie abandoned feel to it. Like something out of a Zombie film. My brother happened to be living in a tent for a while on the roof and it was seeing that, that inspired the idea for the video. The idea was that a meteorite was heading for the earth and society had collapsed. There was a few ideas going on where we are commenting on human nature as well as the nature of people in bands and the egos that they hold. In the end of the video it is our egos that cost us our lives. The inspiration was from a wide array of films such John Carpenter’s They Live as well as some westerns, zombie films and gang films like The Warriors. There is even a reference to a scene from Predator. The famous ‘Dillon you son of a bitch’ handshake scene hahaha!”
Having played only a handful of select dates so far, The Electric Pencils are currently in the process of lining up more for the months ahead, the first of which is at The Hope & Anchor, London on Saturday 7 May. Support comes from NERVOUS TWITCH. £6 on the door.
