Magazine : 2009
Noko / Ipso Facto / Devoto

GO >

Magazine are pleased to end the rumours, right here and right now,
regarding just who is going to walk in the not inconsiderable size
9s of John McGeoch and step up to become the guitarist for the
Magazine shows in February 2009.

After due diligence, and no small amount of fine tuning, it is now
right and proper to announce that Noko will be that man.

Noko’s previous with Magazine related projects include being the
other half to Howard Devoto in Luxuria, who released two albums
between 1988 and 1990 – ‘Unanswerable Lust’ and ‘Beast Box’. The
latter co-produced by Dave Formula. Prior to that Noko replaced
Barry Adamson on bass, and then played guitar with John Doyle and
Buzzcock Pete Shelley, in the amusingly named The Pete Shelley Group.

With Magazine, McGeoch played a Yamaha SG1000 + MXR flanger
+ a few other bits. Noko is substantially duplicating this equipment
set-up, enabling him to create and re-create much of Magazine’s
original dynamic with a flick of his fringe and a switch.

Trust us, he’s the man for the job.
Next up, it can be revealed that Ipso Facto have been invited to open
the shows with a short set of their own making and later will join Magazine
on background vocals for several numbers.

Back in the day, Magazine offered the traditional support slot to up-and-coming
left field acts on the cusp of a breakthrough. Cue Bauhaus and Simple Minds…
Ipso Facto are ripe and ready to carry the mantle.

The Damned launch their album tonight at Islington Academy!!! Then catch them on tour!

The Damned
So, Who’s Paranoid?
(The English Channel)
Release Date: November 17th

”So, Who’s Paranoid?” Certainly not The Damned, who have conjured up yet another collection of genre-defying anthems that sit effortlessly alongside their classic albums, their first since 2001’s critically-acclaimed ‘Grave Disorder’ album. From the catchy, jangly garage rock opener of “A Nation Fit For Heroes” to the lushly psychedelic closing track “Dark Asteroid”, The Damned masterfully affirms their legendary status. Thirty-two years on the heart of The Damned that is David Vanian and Captain Sensible beats stronger than ever, proving with “So, Who’s Paranoid?” that their trademark dark, melodic beauty, tinged with jagged satire is truly timeless and very much intact. They might be a band with an incredible past but The Damned are very much here and now and the thirteen songs featured here are all the proof you’ll need.

Mutiny Festival

Bridlington Spa, East Yorkshire

Date: 16th May 2009

£30 Adults

£20 under 16’s

Whilst many mainstream festivals are closing down in the credit crunch the

punk festival scene is booming. Further proof of a strong grass roots

sub-culture is provided by the latest addition to the scene calendar.

Mutiny, named after UK punk rock heroes Goldblade’s recent top album,

is based in Bridlington, East Yorkshire and looks set to be a big

success. Promoted by two newcomers to the scene (Ant Hall and David

Fisher) and fired by the DIY spirit of punk rock, it’s very much a

fan’s event and looks set to be a big hit with hundreds of tickets

being sought even before advertising began. Bands and fans are flying

in from all over the world for this celebration of the roots radical.

The one-day event will be held at the twenty million pound, newly

re-furbished, Bridlington Spa in East Yorkshire. This is a part of the

country that has traditionally been starved of pop culture but with

excellent communications and plenty of accommodation; it is the perfect

location for an event of this scale.

An all day event (2pm till midnight) with a market place of stalls and

a very strong and varied bill that encompasses old school punk, Ska

and new generation UK bands…

Stiff Little Fingers

Neville Staple (ex Specials)

Anti-Nowhere League

Strawberry Blondes

Middle Finger Salute

Tickets are £30, which will be for wristbands and re-entry. Further

proof of the generational reach of new millennium punk rock is that

under 16s are welcome (under adult supervision).

The festival cherishes the memory of Sophie Lancaster the ‘Goth’ girl who

was beaten to death by ‘youths’ in a park in Bacup as she tried to stop

the 5 youths who were attacking her partner, Rob. The event fully supports

The Sophie Lancaster Foundation and S.O.P.H.I.E. campaign

Because every time a kick and punch was aimed at Sophie and Rob it was

aimed at the whole punk/Goth/alternative community and Sophie was part of

our community.

Sophie’s mother, Sylvia will be at the festival to speak to everyone

like she had been doing at recent GoldBlade gigs

The festival is a celebration of the community of punk rock, a scene

that goes far deeper than the music. It celebrates its brilliant

timeless music and the ability to unite people from all over the

world with exciting bands that genuinely touch people with very

little hype.

If you want any more information please checkout the festival website  or email David Fisher via or

Dairy Crest is one to avoid as its profit growth stalls

Seeing John Lydon, formerly Johnny Rotten in the Sex Pistols, the popular beat combo, fronting a £5 million television advertisement for Country Life butter may be hard to stomach, but the stock market found a profit warning from the butter’s heavily indebted producer even worse. Shares in Dairy Crest fell by more than a quarter yesterday as the mid-cap food producer said that full-year earnings would miss forecasts.

Like its rival Robert Wiseman Dairies, which last week said much the same, the company is being squeezed by falling ingredients prices. Dairy Crest converts surplus liquid milk into skimmed milk powder, which it sells commercially, but with the price of that powder having fallen 25 per cent over the past three months – in line with a retreat in other commodity foodstuffs – last year’s returns will be hard to match.

Maybe Johnny should have stayed on the marg!

Acca Dacca get the A-Z treatment!!!

By Malcolm Dome and Jerry Ewin

Chrome Dreams, in association with Malcolm Dome and Jerry Ewing, are proud to announce the publication of this momentous book.
Published concurrently with the release of AC/DC’s hugely anticipated new reco

For many years AC/DC have been considered the thinking man’s rock band. Neither brainless metal nor dull, proggy ‘r-a-w-k’, this perennial group could almost be said to have picked up where the Faces left off in the mid-1970s – providing good time, uptempo and melodic grooves that just about anyone with even a scintilla of adrenalin could get off to.
The popularity of the band has led to a number of biographies over the years, some good, many barely readable. But this book really is something different. Taking the key elements and subjects surrounding ‘DC – songs, albums, personnel, gigs, events and numerous other subjects – and presenting them in alphabetical order, with each entry illustrated accordingly, it gets to the heart of the matter in hundreds of individual ways. Its in all good book stores now!!

Former Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook has a new band called Man Raze.

As is often the case, the most exciting and inspiring new music regularly comes from the most unexpected of sources. You see, Man Raze is not your average debut artist – they are a band whose members have already achieved multi-platinum sales worldwide in previous guises but are going back to their roots in the form of a straight up rock three piece.

Man Raze is:
Phil Collen (vocals/guitar) – Phil joined Def Leppard in 1982, and with band mate and best friend Steve Clark was able to create the bands highly influential and incredibly successful trademark dual guitar sound. Def Leppard have sold over 60 million albums world-wide to date. 20 years on from the release of their seminal “Hysteria” album, the band are fresh out of a sold out UK arena tour and critically acclaimed new album “Songs From the Sparkle Lounge”.

Paul Cook (drums) – Founder member and mainstay with one of the most influential bands of all time – the Sex Pistols. The band’s 1977 album “Never Mind The Bollocks…” has launched a thousand imitators and is constantly name checked by generation after generation of musicians. Paul Cook has also played with the likes of Johnny Thunders, Edwyn Collins and Greedy Bastards (alongside Phil Lynott and Scott Gorham) and is currently back touring with The Sex Pistols.

Simon Laffy (bass) – long time friend of Phil Collen and member of Collen’s pre Def Leppard outfit Girl. Simon handles the bulk of Man Raze’s production duties also.

“Surreal” is a band at its very best. From the punky punch to the face opener “This Is” to the dub tinged “Runnin’ Me Up”, from the pop fused “Every Second Of Every Day” to the angular guitar rock of “Skin Crawl” (originally a limited edition single in late 2005), from the dirty riffage of “Turn It Up” (already used extensively across ESPN sports channel) to the mid tempo ballsy chorus of album closer “Shadowman”, Man Raze is much more than a sum of its parts. Freed from the expectations of their former (or current) outfits, the band can play whatever they like. The sound is truly eclectic – a mix of the classic and contemporary influences that have shaped the individual members as musicians – From the Police and Trojan Records through to Bowie and Nirvana. All recordings are self recorded and produced.

Already given a critically acclaimed release in the USA, the UK album will come with a special European edition bonus disc. The bonus disc will feature 5 previously unreleased tracks – You’re So Wrong, Low live in Burbank 08, Turn It Up (Deep Dub), Runnin’ Me Up (Instrumental Dub) and Can’t Find My Own Way – Live Acoustic (Gary Crowley show).

Man Raze are set to tour the UK in late 2008

Wed 3rd Dec    Manchester Roadhouse 0871 2200 260
Thurs 4th Dec    Birmingham Barfly 0844 847 2424
Mon 8th Dec    London, Barfly 08444 771 000
Tues 9th Dec    London, Water Rats 08700 600 100

Tickets are priced £9 (London £10), subject to booking fee. Tickets available through (both Barflys), (Manchester) and (Water rats). Doors will be at 7pm. Man Raze will be onstage at 9pm. Support tbc

“Surreal” is released through Surrealist Records on the 1st December 2008. Surrealist Records is released in the UK by Essential Music & Marketing

New York hardcore legend John Joseph recently toured Europe with this Cro Mags jam band. Big Cheeses Rei Nishimoto caught them in .LA.

The Nike Theatre
Los Angeles, California

Original Cro Mags vocalist John Joseph made his long awaited West Coast appearance with his all-star CRO MAGS JAM band at the ‘Radio Silence: A Selected Visual History Of American Hardcore’ book release show. A packed room eagerly awaited the appearance of the tattooed frontman to throw down the old school hardcore jams, and he, along with the band, definitely did. The band, featuring guitarist A.J. Novello (Leeway), drummer Mackie Jayson (Bad Brains, Hazen Street, Madball, Cro-Mags), and bassist Craig Away (Sick Of It All) delivered the goods, punching away at all of the classic tunes and keeping the crowd moving throughout their set. Joseph introduced many of their long-time friends in the crowd, including Lord Ezec (Skarhead/Danny Diablo) and Toby Morse (H20), dedicating songs to them and speaking about the positive message behind hardcore. They played many favourites including ‘We Gotta Know,’ ‘Don’t Tread On Me’ and ‘Hard Times’, with Morse and friends joining in the fun. Showing that despite the drama behind some of the members’ relations, the Cro Mags were definitely a huge part of shaping hardcore and heavy music in today’s scene, nobody should ignore this.
