PRIMAL CREAM COVER SUICIDE

Suicide’s Alan Vega Celebrates his 70th Year
Commemorative Limited Edition EP Series
Primal Scream
Lydia Lunch
Released 30/3/09

Alan Vega has recently celebrated his 70th birthday, to mark this occasion, blastfirstpetite is conducting a yearlong series of limited edition releases. The series kicked off with two releases, by Bruce Springsteen and The Horrors. Both limited editions of 4000. Both now sold out.
March 30th see’s the arrival of the next two releases in the series. For their contribution Primal Scream have covered Suicide’s ‘Diamonds, Furcoat, Champagne’, ”Suicide songs are so perfect and fully realized that it was hard to pick one and reinterpret it in a personal way. We chose ‘Diamonds, Furcoat, Champagne’ as we loved the lyric and also it’s sci-fi futuristic sound. We did a garage rock glam version with French electro chanteuse Miss Kitten in the end, and tried to bring out the pop song that lies beneath every Suicide track”, says Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie. This is a limited 10” vinyl pressing of 3,000, sleeve artwork by Fang Lujin.
For the second release Lydia Lunch chose to cover Suicide’s ‘Frankie Teardrop’, “My tongue around Alan Vega’s words… a wet dream come true”, she says. Also included is an unreleased demo version of the same song by Suicide recorded in 1976. This is a limited 10”vinyl pressing of 2,000.
The promo CD enclosed contains both A and B-sides of the next two vinyl releases of the series.
Each release includes:
•    an established recording artist paying tribute to Alan by covering one of his songs,
•    a previously unreleased Suicide/Vega rarity from the archives, and
•    proving that Vega’s work even now continues to inspire, a cover version by a young up and coming band.

Major artistes include Bruce Springsteen, Primal Scream, Peaches, Grinderman, Spiritualised, The Horrors, Klaxons, Liars, Gavin Friday & David Ball, Sunn 0)) + Pansonic, Julian Cope, Lydia Lunch and Vincent Gallo, Upcoming bands include Beat The Devil/Shilpa Ray, No Bra, HTRK, X-Vectors, Nik Void (ex-Kaito), Effi Briest, S.C.U.M., and Stephen Burroughs (ex-Head Of David).
The sleeve images are all by contemporary visual artists who have been inspired by Vega, including Edward Mapplethorpe, Alex Rose, Cary Kwok, and Colter Jacobsen.

NEW BLOCKHEADS ALBUM/FILM

On April 6th The Blockheads; one of the punk and new wave era’s best loved bands, are set to return to the forefront of the British music scene with a brand new studio album “Staring Down The Barrel” via EMI Records, and will also embark on a Nationwide UK Tour.

Originally known as Ian Dury & The Blockheads, the current line-up, consisting of four of the original members; Chaz Jankel (piano, guitar), Mick Gallagher (keyboards), Norman Watt-Roy (bass) and John Turnbull (guitar), are joined by Dylan Howe (drums) and Gilad Atzmon (sax). “Barrel” is the second studio album the Blockheads have released since their original lead singer, Ian Dury, passed away from cancer in 2000.

Comprised of new music written by Jankel (who wrote the music for the hit singles Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, and Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick), the lyrics are penned by new Blockheads vocalist Derek Hussey (aka Derek The Draw), Dury’s personal minder from 1990-2000.

With the front CD inlay artwork illustrated by Sir Peter Blake; the album dovetails the Blockhead’s UK and French tour dates, which includes a special show at the historic London punk venue, the Electric Ballroom on 30th April featuring original Blockheads’ saxophonist Davey Payne. The new album coincides with the 30th Anniversary of ‘Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick’ that originally reached No.1 in the UK singles chart in 1979, selling in excess of 1 million copies.

It has just been officially confirmed that an unconventional film biopic about the iconic musician Ian Dury entitled ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll’, will star Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings) in the title role. Produced by Damian Jones (Kidulthood, Adulthood), the film will be released in 2010. Jankel has been appointed as musical supervisor, while The Blockheads have already recorded tracks for the film soundtrack

IAN DURY BIO PIC TO BE MADE.

The actor who played Gollum in Peter Jackson‘s ‘Lord Of The Ring’‘s films is set to play  the punk legend Ian Dury in a forthcoming biopic of the iconic singer’s life.

Andy Serkis, who also starred in Jackson‘s 2005 remake of ‘King Kong’, said filming for the production is set to begin in April.

He told Cinema Blend that playing the role of Dury, who suffered from polio and walked with the aid of a stick, is something he’s looking forward to.

"He’s an amazing character, a real poet. He sort of came up out of the British pub rock scene. He sort of pre-empted the Pistols and the whole punk movement," he said.

"And he was a polio sufferer, so he basically didn’t have much use of his left leg or his left arm. The chance of being any kind of rock star is like zero [back then]. He was one of the first disabled punk rockers ever. I’m really looking forward to that."

I.R.S RECORDS RELEASES COMING

Starting February 10th, Capitol Records will dig deep into the I.R.S. Records vault and begin making some of the now-defunct label’s most acclaimed music available digitally for the first time. Gary Numan, the Police’s Stewart Copeland, Television’s Tom Verlaine, Wall of Voodoo, Timbuk 3, Concrete Blonde and many more artists are slated to have their I.R.S. recordings released DRM-free. We’re especially excited for the digital release of dada’s alternative classics Puzzle and American Highway Flower.

But the really big news is that the digital world will finally, legally, be able to download the dbs influential first two albums, Stands For Decibels and Repurcussion, as well as their fourth album Sound of Music. Plus seven songs by the punk supergroup Lords of the New Church, featuring the Dead Boys’ Stiv Bators, will also hit iTunes, Amazon and most other digital music providers. Capitol will release the I.R.S. albums over the course of six weeks, culminating on March 17th. Additionally, Capitol will release four Best of the I.R.S. Years collections dedicated to Over the Rhine, dada, Dread Zeppelin and the dB’s. While CD sales continue to slump, we applaud Capitol for at least trying to bring classic records to a new generation, as evidenced by their mass reissue of vinyl records last year.

PATTI SMITH DVD

patti smith dream of life

AVAILABLE ON DVD FOR THE FIRST TIME FROM 30 MARCH

‘Electrifiying’
Total Film

‘Riveting’
Mojo

‘Quite possibly the most intimate and revealing portrait of a rock icon ever put into film’
Nude

Steven Sebring first met Patti Smith when he photographed her for a Spin shoot in 1995. He spent the next eleven years filming her, and Patti Smith Dream of Life is the result – a plunge into the philosophy and artistry of the legendary singer and cult rocker.  Patti Smith Dream of Life will be available on DVD for the first time from 30 March.

Known as the godmother of punk, Patti Smith emerged in the 1970’s, galvanizing the music scene with her unique style of poetic rage, music and trademark swagger.  A poet whose energy and vision found its voice through music, Smith was ambitious, unconventional, and challenging, and her music was hailed as the most exciting fusion of rock and poetry since Bob Dylan’s heyday.  Says Sebring:  ‘She’s a rock star, a poet, an artist, a mother, an activist.  She’s a folk hero. She’s been through a lot of tragedy and yet she has come through it.  I can’t think of anyone who’s like her’

Unabashedly intellectual and creatively uncompromising, Smith became an icon to subsequent generations of female rockers, never relying on sex appeal for her success.  Her career has been marked by extraordinary achievement, incendiary creative collaborations, and shocking tragedies.

Sebring’s documentary follows the multitalented and private artist over 11 years of international travel, through her spoken words, performances, lyrics, interviews, paintings and photographs.  Capturing both Smith’s charged live performances and her informal interactions with friends and collaborators including Philip Glass and Michael Stipe, the resulting film is also a touching tale of survival, detailing as it does Smith’s recovery from the unexpected deaths in winter 1994 of her husband, Fred ‘Sonic’ Smith of the MC5, and her brother Todd.

Patti Smith Dream of Life is a touching and irreverent tribute and is, like its subject, forceful, funny, raw and original.

LYDONS BUTTER GOES BALLISTIC!

An ad campaign that worked out well:

It has been one of the more unlikely celebrity endorsements; John Lydon, a member of the seminal punk band the Sex Pistols, advertising Country Life butter. But it appears to have worked.

Dairy Crest today said the campaign, featuring a spiky-haired Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten, dressed in tweeds, had helped lift sales of the brand by 85% in the most recent quarter. Lydon, once better known for sending chills down the spine of middle Englanders, now appears adept at sending them to the chiller cabinet.

I don’t know how much of that 85 percent can actually be attributed to the ads. I do know that the

campaign

is genuinely entertaining — much more so than the Pistols’ dimwitted

Mountain Dew spots

, not to mention the last few

PiL

records — so I’ll praise it anyway. Bravo, butter boys.

Before some Brit

John Banzhaf

sues Rotten for increasing England’s cholesterol counts, I should remind readers of the usual pattern in cases like this. With a familiar product like butter, the general effect of advertising is to make established users

switch brands

, not to persuade people who had been eating their bread plain all these years that they really should try this newfangled "spread" stuff. Rotten may have changed the way people think about the Country Life brand. He probably hasn’t altered their perceptions of butter.

Bonus Johnny Rotten trivia:

He’s a fan of former

Reason

editor

Virginia Postrel

‘s book

The Future and Its Enemies

, and he hosted both Virginia and Nick Gillespie as guests on his long-defunct Internet radio show. I think Nick will agree that one of the high points of his career was when he innocently asked Rotten why the punks never embraced Margaret Thatcher.

PISTOLS JONES TO JOIN STOOGES?

Steve Jones, the Sex Pistols guitarist and host of Jonesy’s Jukebox, is looking for a new job because Indie 103.1, the radio station that employed him, is no longer broadcasting:

"Indie, that was my radio station, so to speak. I think people are starting to really miss it and realize how special it was. And for me, taking the job, it got me out of a rut that I was always in. I’m pretty much an isolated person. I’d rather stay home and play video games. For me to go somewhere every day, it was the best thing for me as a human. It got me away from the madness in my head."

"Wherever I go, I will still do my show the same; I wouldn’t change it. I don’t think I should, and I hope any of these people that are thinking of hiring me aren’t going to try to mold me into something else. I’d be bored out of me brain. I’d last two weeks if they had me reading some nonsense. If you want someone to read a piece of paper, just hire someone else. There’s loads of people that do that."

Jonesy says he’ll only take jobs in NYC or LA. I just called my radio station, Live 105, and tried to get them to call Jonesy and hire him. But they said no.

And Jonesy also said he might go on tour with Iggy and the Stooges. That’s pretty cool.

MAGAZINE ALBUM AND SHOWS!

MAGAZINE
An Anthology: 02.78 – 06.81

Re-mastered with singes & b-sides

Release date: 9 February 2009

To coincide with Magazine’s first UK tour since 1981, EMI is proud to announce the release of a definitive, double-anthology, CD retrospective of the band’s highly-influential career, including singles and b-sides.

Featuring songs from the band’s four studio albums – Real Life, Secondhand Daylight, The Correct Use Of Soap and Magic, Murder And The Weather – in chronological order, the anthology highlights the breadth of Magazine’s diversity and talent.  Founded in 1977 by former Buzzcock Howard Devoto, the band wilfully ignored the prevailing musical orthodoxy of the punk era, rejecting punk’s reductiveness for a musical template which incorporated keyboards and a textuality that had blinkered and faint-hearted critics crying out that prog rock had returned. Magazine were progressive, but their music was focused, concise: never an overblown showcase for musical virtuosity. Melody was never sacrificed. It says volumes for Magazine’s scope that they were lauding John Barry at a time when the world was seemingly trying to be The Clash or re-write The Ramones songbook.

As well as Devoto, the band featured the talents of Guitarist John McGeoch (who sadly passed away in 2004) – an inimitable stylist who later went on to join Siouxsie And The Banshees and Public Image Ltd; and bassist Barry Adamson who has carved out a notable solo career, in addition to working with Nick Cave. Magazine’s producers included John Leckie (The Stone Roses) and the legendary Martin Hannett. Devoto’s adroit choice of collaborators helped make Magazine unique.

The Anthology includes all the band’s singles and b-sides (listed below). The album artwork will be designed by Malcolm Garrett (Buzzcocks, Magazine, Simple Minds, Peter Gabriel, etc).
