“Given the times those ancient Blockheads sound more here-and-now than anyone…”  Uncut
“Dury would be proud.”  Mojo
“The trademark funk/rock/music hall/ska fusion of old mucker Derek The Draw has …got the great man [Ian Dury]’s knack for vivid social commentary nailed too.” Big Cheese

“This is a record which will thrill Blockheads fans of all ages and demonstrates this ensemble have lost none of their passion and spirit. Ian Would be proud.”  Subba-Cultcha

30 years after their million-selling number one, ‘Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick’, with the late, inimitable Ian Dury, The Blockheads will release their new album, ‘Starring Down The Barrel’, on 6th April.
The Blockheads are one of the UK’s most inventive, distinctive and influential bands who, along with Dury, recorded some of the most memorable songs in the British pop cannon: ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll’, ‘Reasons To Be Cheerful, Part 3’ (also a hit in 1979), and the aforementioned ‘Hit Me…’, as well as five celebrated albums: ‘New Boots & Panties’ (1977), ‘Do It Yourself’ (’79), ‘Laughter’ (’80), and ‘Mr. Love Pants’ (’98) and the posthumous ‘Ten More Turnips From The Tip’ (2002).
The line-up for ‘Staring Down The Barrel’ features original members Chaz Jankel, Mick Gallagher, Norman Watt-Roy and Johnny Turnbull, plus Dylan Howe and Gilad Atzmon – both of whom played on and have been with the band since ‘Mr. Love Pants’ – and, on lyric and vocal duties, Dury’s late minder and friend of 10 years, Derek The Draw, who wrote all the album’s songs with Jankel.
‘Staring Down The Barrel’ features 10 new songs, pondering and exploring prescient themes of our time, including: financial collapse and selfishness (‘Roll Over’, ‘Greed’ and ‘Dirty Money’), the state of the environment (‘Prophet Of Doom’ and ‘Elegant Style’), those that fall out of society (‘George The Human Pigeon’), and urban decay (‘No Go Central’); with a raggle-taggle collection of Machiavellian villains, vagrants, desperadoes, eccentrics and   other outsiders and deceivers. These sobering issues are shot through with humour and juxtaposed by The Blockheads’ unique brew of rock ‘n’ roll, jazz, music hall, soul, funk and tight grooves, fomenting an album for the feet as well as the head.
The band continue to inspire the work of other artists: the album’s artwork was designed by Dury’s former Art Teacher, and Pop-Art genius, Peter Blake. Amongst younger artists, the likes of Jamie T – who included two of the band’s album sleeves on his ‘Panic Prevention’ album artwork – and Lily Allen have expressed their love for The Blockheads.
Since 2002 the band have rarely been off the road, playing literally hundreds of dates a year. To celebrate the release of ‘Staring Down The Barrel’ the band will begin a 14-date UK tour on 1st April, with a London show on 30th April, where they’ll be joined by their original saxophonist Davey Payne.

Seminal punk band Rancid – Tim Armstrong (guitar/vocals), Lars Frederiksen (guitar/vocals), Matt Freeman (bass/vocals), and Branden Steineckert (drums) – have set June 1st for the release of Let The Dominoes Fall (Hellcat/Epitaph), their first studio album in six years. The platinum-selling band recorded at George Lucas’ Skywalker Sound Studio, with production by Epitaph Records founder/Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz.  Let The Dominoes Fall  features nineteen new songs, all written by Rancid.  Special guest and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Booker T contributes Hammond B3 organ on one track, “Up To No Good.”

“The crew is back doing what we do best,” says Armstrong.  “We approached every element of this record as a team, and the result is my favorite Rancid record to date.”

It’s also their most topical.  From the unflinching observations of “This Place,”  “Lulu” and “Locomotive,” all of which presage the current economic meltdown, to “The Bravest Kids” which rails against media’s kid-glove treatment of the Iraq war, and the mostly acoustic “Civilian Ways,” inspired by the soldier’s journey of Armstrong’s brother to Iraq and back home again, Let The Dominoes Fall feels timely, adamant and alive.

“Last One To Die,” the first single from the new album, will premiere on April 7 via a widget available now on Rancid’s myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/rancid). Fans can register to get a personal embed code and then spread the widget to other sites.

Let The Dominoes Fall is Rancid’s seventh album and first studio release since 2003’s Indestructible, which reached #15 on the Billboard Top 200.

Vive Le Punk is sad to report that Travis Criscola of THE CUTE LEPERS died on Saturday March 28th. The band explain,

"Early the morning of March 28, in Cincinnati our friend and band-mate Travis Criscola passed away in his sleep. He was 24. Travis was guitarist in the Cute Lepers for the last six months and was the perfect addition to the band as it’s developed. He was our friend. His company was always a pleasure. I don’t think I ever heard him say a negative word about any one. He was smart, polite and considerate, always interested in learning more about music and playing guitar… he really loved music. He was passionate about music in a way that only other like minded musicians recognize and relate with.

When Travis joined the band he would not think twice about jumping on the bus from Olympia and making the two hour ride to Seattle for a spur of the moment rehearsal, and then riding the bus two more hours to get back home. In fact Travis was doing this three times a week up until we left for europe to start our tour. His character and his commitment made him the very best we could hope for in a band-mate and a friend. We’re gonna really miss him.

We feel that it’s appropriate and absolutely not in bad taste to disclose the cause of death of our friend. Travis combined alcohol and pills, then went to sleep and never woke up. It was an accident. Travis was not any kind of a habitual drug user. I’m a man who has left drugs and alcohol alone for over a decade and I just wont work with people who are mixed up with narcotics. It is rare to find a rock n’ roll musician in his early twenties who doesn’t get caught up in hitting the bars and going to parties on tour, and Trav was just one of those ones who made a really bad decision. He naively took some type of pills on top of the beer he was drinking and that’s it. I believe that it would be a disservice for us to leave out this information. People would wind up hearing distorted versions of the truth anyways. Also our hope is that other young musicians, or anyone it may apply to who reads this will learn from our tragedy and perhaps wise up a bit. We’re currently traveling across the country back home to Seattle with heavy hearts. Trav’s family and his beautiful longtime girlfriend are in our prayers." –Steve

VLP’s condolences go to Travis’ family and friends.

live the Citrus Club Edinburgh,Scotland 20-03-09

Punk is dead, so they say, well sad to disappoint it is alive and kicking more than ever. We may be older and wiser but the music from 25 years ago is still as great as ever.

As soon as Animal uttered the words “We are the league, the Anti Nowhere League” the crowd was off – jumping, pushing, pogo-ing.

I don’t have the energy nowadays to get in amongst the crowd but my buzz is taking photos of the bands and the crowd, which gives me natural high.

We were to hear most of “We are the league” album including Snowman, Streets of London, I hate rock n roll, Woman (one of my favourite all time punk tunes), So What (the infamous b-side to the 1981 single Streets of London that had the British police seize all copies of it from the bands distributor under the obscene publications acts, and is now covered by many bands including Metallica, it has been 28 years since I first heard this song wow) had the place going wild.

The addition of Johnny Skullknuckles from Goldblade on Lead guitar was a master stroke, he brought rock n roll look to the band, and with Shady on bass, Nato on drums and the menacing figure of Animal singing you have one awesome band.

When there was time for one more song Animal said “what would you like” and in unison the crowd shouted “So What” so we got it for the second time that night. The crowd went totally mental, people falling everywhere, being picked up to be knocked down again, all in a friendly manner.

After the show, the band came outside to speak and take photos with members of the crowd. I know many bands will not do this but I think it is great and sometimes just finishes of a great evening.
