The series kicks off on 6th October with two releases, both editions of 4000 each, available in both 10” vinyl and a limited download formats.
Two separate releases on the 6th October are the Bruce Springsteen’s cover of Suicide’s “Dream Baby Dream” (catalog number PTYT 017), a live recording from The Boss’ 2005 “Devils & Dust” solo tour. The sleeve is by Edward Mapplethorpe.
The second release is a Suicide cover by The Horrors of ‘Shadazz’, (catalog number PTYT 018), a track originally recorded by Suicide for their ‘Second Album’, released in 1980. Sleeve artwork by Alex Rose.
The promo CD enclosed contains both A and B-sides of the first two vinyl releases of the series, available on 6th October.
Each release includes:

• proving that Vega’s work even now continues to inspire, a cover version by a young up and coming band.
Major artists will include Bruce Springsteen, Primal Scream, Peaches, Grinderman, Spiritualised, The Horrors, Sunn 0)) + Pansonic, Julian Cope, Lydia Lunch, and Vincent Gallo. Mutton-chopped Jesse Hector was a permanent fixture in the English music press of the mid-‘70s and the electrifying live performances of his band The Gorillas proved an inspiration to such faces of the burgeoning punk scene as Paul Weller, Billy Idol, Shane McGowan and Rat Scabies.
Jesse has always believed in the revolutionary and rejuvenating power of music – the cover of The Gorillas album showed his band of space age Mods hurtling towards earth on a meteorite to save the world with rock n’ roll – and his belief in music is as strong today as it ever has been.
He now works as a cleaner at Hackney Empire and The Royal
Horticultural Society and this documentary follows him as he journeys around London and retraces his fifty years in rock n’ roll – skiffling at the 2 I’s in Old Compton Street at the age of 12, playing guitar with Mod Freak beat legends The Clique, fronting proto-punk bruisers Crushed Butler and The Hammersmith Gorillas – and attempts to find out, as the NME’s Roy Carr wrote in 1977, ‘Whatever Happened To Jesse Hector?’
‘A Message To The World’ documentary is being shown at the Raindance festival on October 4th at 12.00 pm:
It is also being shown the following Tuesday October 7th as part of the Pop Mavericks season at the Barbican:
That’s right, the Last Gang In Town grace our cover this month as we take a look at the life and legacy of the band who lit a creative fire in the bellies of punkers around the world. As the rest of the world goes nuts for the Joe, Mick, Paul and Topper once again this autumn, we lay bare the history of the band that shook the world (and continue to do so even to this day), for the punks, by the punks!
PLUS The Stray Cats, The Cure and more!
Issue 104 (Oct. ’08) on sale Sept. 25th.
