COSMIC PSYCHOS IN THE RAW!

Our favourite beer-swilling yob-rockers COSMIC PSYCHOS have a brand new album out, plus an appropriately offensive video to go with it.

Cum The Raw Prawn is the Australian trio’s first new album in six years and was recorded on bassist/vocalist Ross Knight’s farm north of Melbourne. Out on Desperate Records, the album’s preceded by a video for the lead track ‘Better, Not Bitter’, which is definitely not for the squeamish or easily offended, so don’t let it spoil your weekend.

Cosmic Psychos were the subject of the 2013 documentary Blokes You Can Trust.

Look out for a major Aussie rock spectacular in the next edition of Vive Le Rock, out 12 July!

The band, put together in 1976 by Sniffin’ Glue fanzine founder  and former bank clerk Mark Perry – aka Mark P – release Opposing Forces through Public Domain Records on 10 July. Originally coming together at Throbbing Gristle’s Industrial Studios in Hackney, early recordings featured Genesis P-Orridge on drums. Playing their first gig in Nottingham supporting The Adverts in May ’77, their line-up has been fluid throughout the years, with Perry also maintaining a solo career and stints with the Good Missionaries and The Door And The Window.

The closest they came to a hit was ‘Action Time Vision’ on Deptford Fun City Records in 1978.

The current line-up features Perry, Morgan, Lee McFadden and Clive Giblin on guitars and Steve Carter on bass. They’re in the process of lining up a series of dates.

NICK MARSH RIP

Vive Le Rock is extremely saddened to learn that Nick Marsh of Flesh For Lulu and Urban Voodoo Machine has passed away following surgery for cancer. A statement from the Urban Voodoo Machine reads as follows….

“Dear Brothers and Sisters,

It is with tremendously heavy hearts that we must announce that our dear brother Nick Marsh lost his courageous battle with cancer this morning. As you can imagine The Urban Voodoo Machine and it’s entire extended family are deeply saddened and reeling at this sudden and horrible news. Our immediate thoughts go out to Nicks family, most especially his partner Katharine Blake and their daughters Ava and Rosa.

A full tribute will follow on http:theurbanvoodoomachine.com, in the meantime should you wish to send messages of the support to Katharine and the girls please do so by visiting the Marsh Family Cancer Crisis Fund page at http://www.gofundme.com/marshfamily and perhaps leave a small donation whilst you are there.

The Urban Voodoo Machine”

Marsh formed Flesh For Lulu in South London in 1982, going on to achieve hits in the USA with ‘Postcards From  Paradise’ and ‘I Go Crazy’. After a brief solo career, he became an integral part of Urban Voodoo Machine and recently launched a new Flesh For Lulu.

MOTORHEAD WORK THEIR MAGIC

MOTORHEAD have announced the release of their twenty-second studio album for this, their 40th Anniversary year. And they’re supporting the release with extensive US and European touring during the second half of the year. Proof, if any were needed that, despite Lemmy’s recent health wobbles, they’re not quite ready to bow out gracefully.

Bad Magic was written, worked up and recorded by Leemy, Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee in the studio – a first for this line-up of the band – and produced by longtime producer Cameron Webb. It features thirteen tracks including the ballad ‘Until The End’ – a musical departure that the old warhorse has proved himself surprisingly good at in the past – and a boneshaking delivery of the Rolling Stones’ ‘Sympathy For The Devil’.

Bad Magic is released via UDR Music / Motorhead Records on 28 August.

From mid-August, the band will embark on a North American tour with Anthrax, ending with their now legendary Motorboat cruise, before heading for Europe. The only UK date currently on the horizon is Glastonbury on 24 June and the Eden Project on 27 June. More dates are set to be added so keep an eye on the band’s website.

THE MEMBRANES DELIVER A KICK IN THE PARTICLES!

Blackpool’s finest THE MEMBRANES return this month with their first new album since 1989.

Founded in 1977 by punk journalist – and Vive Le Rock contributor – John Robb, Dark Matter / Dark Energy features fourteen tracks including ‘Do The Supernova’, which was previously released as a Record Store Day 7-inch. It’s out on 22 June through Cherry Red as a CD, download and limited edition double-vinyl LP.

The album was inspired by a chance meeting between Robb and CERN Project Head, Joe Incandela about the Higgs boson particle, and concerns the life and death of the universe. It’s also about Robb’s father who sadly passed away during the album’s recording.

The band are currently playing a series of UK dates. You can catch them at….

June 6 – York Fibbers

June 12 – Edinburgh Citrus Club

June 13 – Glasgow Broadcast

July 4 – Leeds Brudenell

Inspired by the original punks, The Membranes quickly became favourites of John Peel and their explorations into noise aligned them with contemporaries Einsturzende Neubauten, Swans and Sonic Youth. They’ve since been cited as an influence by such a diverse array of bands as Big Black, Godflesh, Lambchop, Atari Teenage Riot, The Wedding Present and Napalm Death.

Originally splitting in 1990, Robb went on to form Sensurround and Goldblade, reactivating The Membranes in 2009 for the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival at the request of curators My Bloody Valentine.

Pre-order Dark Matter / Dark Energy here.

MICHAEL MONROE UNVEILS NEW ALBUM!

Former HANOI ROCKS frontman MICHAEL MONROE has announced the release of a brand new album, Blackout States via Spinefarm on 16 October.

Following on from 2013’s Horns & Halos and 2011’s award-winning Sensory Overdrive, the album was produced by Chips Kiesbye and features his regular band, including Hanoi sparring partner Sam Yaffa, Steve Conte of the New York Dolls, Rich Jones and Karl Rockfist.

“I’m extremely excited about our new album, Blackout States,” he says. “It has all the ingredients of a perfect rock‘n’roll record – strong melodic songs with great meaningful lyrics that defy all clichés, delivered with a punky, ballsy attitude by a killer band. I highly recommend Blackout States to anyone who’s even a little bit interested in what real, authentic, high energy rock‘n’roll at its best sounds like today.”

As previously announced, Monroe plays Proud Camden as part of the Camden Rocks festival this Saturday 30 May.

ALBUM 31 FROM THE FALL

THE FALL return with a new album this week via Cherry Red Records. Sub-Lingual Tablet is the 31st album from Mark E Smith’s Manchester iconoclasts and features their current line-up of Peter Greenway, Keiron Melling, Elena Poulou, Daren Garratt and David Spurr.

The band have lined up a short series of UK dates in support of the release…

May 23 The Boiler Shop Stephenson Works, Newcastle

May 27 Sub 89, Reading

May 29 Manchester Cathedral, Manchester

May 31 The Globe, Cardiff

Jun 05   Umberslade Estate, West Midlands

Jun 24   Glastonbury 2015, Somerset

Read Steve Hill’s review of the album below…

THE FALL

SUB-LINGUAL TABLET

(Cherry Red Records)

The latest cryptic missive from the mind of Mark E Smith.

8/10

Studio album number 31 finds The Fall in unrelenting form, delivering arguably the most entertaining release yet from this current longstanding line-up. Opener ‘Venice With The Girls’ is a bona fide foot-tapper, with Smith reverting to his traditional singing voice as opposed to the feral growl that some feel has blighted their recent output. He drifts into various vocal styles throughout, however, including a virtual spoken-word affair in ‘Junger Cloth,’ providing the album’s first laugh-out-loud moment as Smith seemingly attempts to negotiate an archaic eye-test chart in his distinctive Salford burr.

Lyrically, as ever, Sub-Lingual Tablet is a riddle wrapped inside an enigma, but there are honourable mentions for Pierce Brosnan’s bed-wet pills, a campaign to kidnap Bono, and a long overdue return for the Curly-Wurly.

Very much this year’s ‘Blindness’ or ‘Reformation,’ central track ‘Auto Chip 2014-2016’ is a ten-minute cyclical rant in which Smith repeatedly poses the question “How bad are English musicians?” as his band of (mainly) English musicians play as if their lives depend upon it – which they possibly do.

Bang up to date, the album ends with a furious dual blast of anti-technology as MES berates his lack of a Facebook troll in the judiciously renamed ‘Fibre Book Troll,’ culminating in an unexpected outro of some delightful whistling (Peel would have approved). By now incandescent with rage, the self-explanatory ‘Quit iPhone’ brings proceedings to a close in style. Joyfully indecipherable, Sub-Lingual Tablet is another remarkable album from Britain’s most extraordinary band. Contains foul language.

Steve Hill
