Curiously-named US trio \\GT// are set to turn some heads with the release of their debut album this month.

Trading in intensely groovy psych-tinged garage-rock, the Birmingham, Alabama band issue Beats Misplaced through Communicating Vessels on 31 July.

Initially instigated as the solo project of guitarist/biker Scotty Lee – alternately known as Get Tryin’, Green Teeth and Ghost Traveller – the band solidified with bassist Byron Sonnier and drummer Mark Beasley last Summer.

GALLON DRUNK have their youth revisited with the release of a live show from 1992 as a DVD/CD set.

The release, which forms part of Edsel Records’ Access All Areas series, captures the band’s set at a charity concert at London’s Town & Country venue (now the Forum) in September of that year.

Recorded following the release of the band’s debut You, The Night… And The Music, the five-song set includes intense versions of that album’s ‘Some Fool’s Mess’, ‘Two Wings Mambo’ and ‘Just One More’, plus Clawfist singles ‘Draggin’ Along’ and ‘The Last Gasp’. Clocking in at half an hour, the performance features a guest appearance from sax-player Terry Edwards, prior to him becoming a permanent fulltime member.

Band frontman James Johnston told Vive Le Rock: “None of the band even realised the performance was being filmed, so it was a total surprise to finally see the gig some twenty-three years later. We’re playing a lot of the very early material – and it’s a pleasingly feral and very energised noise. Really glad this finally came to light, I’d forgotten how carefree, wild and improvised the band was in ’92.”

Other titles in the Access All Areas series include BUZZCOCKS, JAH WOBBLE, VIC GODARD, MONOCHROME SET and BLUE AEROPLANES.

Essex punk legends THE NEWTOWN NEUROTICS are to release a live album capturing an explosive London show from 1987.

Recorded at Brunel University, Uxbridge on 4 April 1987, Triumph Over Adversity catches the classic line-up of Steve Drewett, Simon Lomond and Colin Dredd in full flight.

A live set that the band has long wanted to make publicly available, the album includes sleevenotes by Drewett explaining the circumstances of the gig and the recording, which followed the release of their groundbreaking album Kickstarting A Backfiring Nation.

Front cover for vive la rock

Triumph Over Adversity serves as a tribute to bassist Dredd (aka Colin Masters) who sadly passed away in March this year following major surgery and a long period of illness. The band have also set up a Facebook page in his honour.

Drewett, who has just played Glastonbury at the invitation of Billy Bragg, released a solo album KuJenga Society earlier this year. The Neurotics, who’ve been rejoined by drummer Lomond along with bassist Adam Smith, play the Rebellion Festival on 8 August and the launch for ATTILA THE STOCKBROKER’s autobiography at London’s Borderline on 25 September.

Errant AC/DC drummer PHIL RUDD has been sentenced having previously pleaded guilty for drug possession and threatening to kill.

Judge Thomas Ingram of Tauranga District Court on New Zealand’s North Island sentenced Rudd to eight months of home detention. He’ll be electronically monitored and undergo rehabilitation for drug and alcohol addiction, and the judge assure him that he’d go to prison if he broke the terms of his sentence.

Rudd’s lawyer argued that a conviction would leave him unable to tour with the band, amounting to a loss of millions of dollars in earnings. The judge, however, said there was no evidence that he was actually still in AC/DC, adding, bizarrely, that “Queen replaced Freddie Mercury”.

Rudd released his first solo album Head Job last year.

Our favourite beer-swilling yob-rockers COSMIC PSYCHOS have a brand new album out, plus an appropriately offensive video to go with it.

Cum The Raw Prawn is the Australian trio’s first new album in six years and was recorded on bassist/vocalist Ross Knight’s farm north of Melbourne. Out on Desperate Records, the album’s preceded by a video for the lead track ‘Better, Not Bitter’, which is definitely not for the squeamish or easily offended, so don’t let it spoil your weekend.

Cosmic Psychos were the subject of the 2013 documentary Blokes You Can Trust.

Look out for a major Aussie rock spectacular in the next edition of Vive Le Rock, out 12 July!

Originally coming together at Throbbing Gristle’s Industrial Studios in Hackney, early recordings featured Genesis P-Orridge on drums. Playing their first gig in Nottingham supporting The Adverts in May ’77, their line-up has been fluid throughout the years, with Perry also maintaining a solo career and stints with the Good Missionaries and The Door And The Window.

The closest they came to a hit was ‘Action Time Vision’ on Deptford Fun City Records in 1978.

The current line-up features Perry, Morgan, Lee McFadden and Clive Giblin on guitars and Steve Carter on bass. They’re in the process of lining up a series of dates.

Vive Le Rock is extremely saddened to learn that Nick Marsh of Flesh For Lulu and Urban Voodoo Machine has passed away following surgery for cancer. A statement from the Urban Voodoo Machine reads as follows….

It is with tremendously heavy hearts that we must announce that our dear brother Nick Marsh lost his courageous battle with cancer this morning. As you can imagine The Urban Voodoo Machine and it’s entire extended family are deeply saddened and reeling at this sudden and horrible news. MOTORHEAD have announced the release of their twenty-second studio album for this, their 40th Anniversary year. And they’re supporting the release with extensive US and European touring during the second half of the year. Proof, if any were needed that, despite Lemmy’s recent health wobbles, they’re not quite ready to bow out gracefully.

Bad Magic was written, worked up and recorded by Leemy, Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee in the studio – a first for this line-up of the band – and produced by longtime producer Cameron Webb. It features thirteen tracks including the ballad ‘Until The End’ – a musical departure that the old warhorse has proved himself surprisingly good at in the past – and a boneshaking delivery of the Rolling Stones’ ‘Sympathy For The Devil’.

Bad Magic is released via UDR Music / Motorhead Records on 28 August.

From mid-August, the band will embark on a North American tour with Anthrax, ending with their now legendary Motorboat cruise, before heading for Europe. The only UK date currently on the horizon is Glastonbury on 24 June and the Eden Project on 27 June. More dates are set to be added so keep an eye on the band’s website.

Blackpool’s finest THE MEMBRANES return this month with their first new album since 1989.

Founded in 1977 by punk journalist – and Vive Le Rock contributor – John Robb, Dark Matter / Dark Energy features fourteen tracks including ‘Do The Supernova’, which was previously released as a Record Store Day 7-inch. It’s out on 22 June through Cherry Red as a CD, download and limited edition double-vinyl LP.

The album was inspired by a chance meeting between Robb and CERN Project Head, Joe Incandela about the Higgs boson particle, and concerns the life and death of the universe. It’s also about Robb’s father who sadly passed away during the album’s recording.

The band are currently playing a series of UK dates. You can catch them at….

June 6 – York Fibbers

June 12 – Edinburgh Citrus Club

June 13 – Glasgow Broadcast

July 4 – Leeds Brudenell

Inspired by the original punks, The Membranes quickly became favourites of John Peel and their explorations into noise aligned them with contemporaries Einsturzende Neubauten, Swans and Sonic Youth. They’ve since been cited as an influence by such a diverse array of bands as Big Black, Godflesh, Lambchop, Atari Teenage Riot, The Wedding Present and Napalm Death.

Originally splitting in 1990, Robb went on to form Sensurround and Goldblade, reactivating The Membranes in 2009 for the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival at the request of curators My Bloody Valentine.

Pre-order Dark Matter / Dark Energy here.
