Original psych-punks THE BRAINIAC 5 prepare for the release of their first new album in thirty years with a special London show this week.

The band, who reunited in 2012 after initially splitting in 1980, release Exploding Universe on 24 July on Reckless Records through Shellshock. It follows on from last year’s When Silence Was Sound career retrospective and their 2013 comeback release, the Space Is The Place 10” EP.

Their only previous studio album was World Inside, recorded in 1979 but not released until 1988.

They celebrate the momentous occasion with an all-dayer at The Betsey Trotwood, Farringdon Road, London on Saturday 27 June. Kicking off at 2pm, the event also features sets from Jowe Head (of Swell Maps and Television Personalities), Mark & The Clouds, Richard Booth and more.

Originally born out of the mid-70s Cornish festival scene, The Brainiac 5 arrived in London at the advent of punk, recruiting guitarist Richard Booth from Stiff Records favourites Plummet Airlines along the way. Working with producer – and future Hawkwind drummer – Martin Griffin, they received praise from the NME for their Mushy Doubt EP, gaining the attention of John Peel and Alex Chilton and sharing bills with The Soft Boys and The Barracudas.

Listen to ‘Haphazard!’.
