Former Godfathers and Speedways guitarist Mauro Venegas has kicked off his new project MAURO & THE MOB with a new single.
'What Have I Got To Lose' b/w 'Don't Look Now' is out now through Spain's Snap! label.
Venegas first made dents in the London scene with The Rocks and Jonny Cola and The A-Grades before joining The Godfathers, appearing on their A Big Bad Beautiful Noise album. He then joined powerpoppers The Speedways, releasing three albums and establishing the Pump It Up! Powerpop Weekender. Along the way, there have also been stints with Desperate Measures and Duncan Reid & The Big Heads.
The new single sees Venegas on guitar and vocals, joined by Rachel Stamp’s David Ryder Prangley on bass, and Steve Grainger (Chelsea, DeRellas, Last Great Dreamers) on drums.
Speaking of the new single, he says, “Trying to write a song on one chord, in the same way as New Wave classics like ‘Big Boys’ by Elvis Costello and ‘Whole Wide World’ by Wreckless Eric… Bit of a cheeky Bowie lift going on in the chorus but no one seems to have noticed it yet! Lyrically it’s about the dangers and frustrations of falling into patterns of destructive behaviour.”
Mauro & The Mob play their debut show at London's Aces & Eights on 2nd October. You can then catch them opening for The Briefs and The Cynanide Pills at London's Lexington on 11 November.
More gigs are set to follow with the band's debut album due for release in the new year.
The single is available on Spotify and Bandcamp with a limited edition 7" to follow.
