Max's Kansas City 1976 - the compilation spawned by the legendary New York City nightclub - is getting an expanded reissue.
Situated at 213 Park Avenue South, Max's first opened in the mid-60s as a haven for artists, poets and musicians, including Andy Warhol, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed - it was also the location for the recording of the Velvet Underground's classic 1972 live album, Live At Max's Kansas City.
Closing in 1974, it reopened a year later, becoming as integral to the birth of New York punk as CBGB's, with show's from the likes of Wayne County, New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders, Patti Smith, Ramones, Television, The Fast, The Dictators, Blondie and many more.
Max's Kansas City 1976 was compiled as a 10-track album by music director Peter Crowley to help promote the club. Now the original album is expanded to 40 tracks across two CDs, with a selection of 25 on the double-vinyl edition. Including many unreleased and rare tracks, it was once again compiled by Crowley, who also adds sleevenotes detailing the album's history. Further notes and artist biogs by writer, musician and Max's regular Jimi LaLumia complete a 20-page booklet.
Max's Kansas City: 1976 & Beyond is released through Jungle on 5 May. It's available to pre-order here.
