Since they formed in an East London pub 18 months ago, these 17 women (plus a few blokes) have become something of a phenomenon, bashing out classic punk tunes on ukuleles. Around half the pUKEs had never played an instrument before joining the group, others have been in bands such as UK Subs, Extreme Noise Terror, Noise Agents, Lost Cherrees, Rabies Babies and Social Schism.

Their highly contagious enthusiasm for all things punk and ukulele has landed them support slots with many of the bands who inspired them, including Sham 69, Chelsea, Menace, Subhumans and Splodge.

Most of the pUKEs’ live set is made up of ultra-charming versions of well known punk classics, but the group decided to write an original song for their first recording. ‘Will I Learn’, a bitter-sweet tale of drinking too much, elbows its way in somewhere between the Ramones and the Go-Go’s. There are eighteen different ukuleles on the track, including sopranos, concerts, tenors, baritones and a banjolele.

The pUKEs are playing Shoreditch 1234 Festival on Saturday 1 September. They are set to release an EP on Damaged Goods records later this year and are heading out on tour with Bad Manners in December.
