HAZEL O'CONNOR IN LONDON

HAZEL O’CONNOR JAZZ CAFÉ, LONDON SUNDAY 4TH DECEMBER 2011 “The expressive power of her singing, songwriting craft and warm strong personality” (The Times) Hazel O’Connor closes her current UK tour with a date at London’s Jazz Café on Sunday 4th December. The tour is in support of her brand new album, I Give You My Sunshine, an emotional tour de force. Here, Hazel’s unique voice delivers with a renewed passion and fire as she explores a stunning repertoire of old and new, alongside some superb cover versions. She is accompanied by virtuoso saxophonist Clare Hirst (The Belle Stars, Communards, David Bowie) on sax and vocals and the fabulous Sarah Fisher (Eurythmics, Sax in the City) on keyboards and vocals; this powerful blend of voices and musicianship lends a classy touch to Hazel’s vibrant performance. Together, the trio are touring throughout the UK album. “They were absolutely fantastic, bringing the entire audience roaring to its feet” (Daily Telegraph) The album’s moving title track describes the sunshine in her own heart, which was all and everything that Hazel could give to her mother as she drew to the end of her life in a hospice. Other highlights include other personal and new compositions; I Would Rather (Wonderwoman), The Very First Hello and Cinderella Moment about enjoying the company of friends and wondering whether or not to go home as the clock strikes midnight. There are also two songs from the Nina Simone songbook, Feeling Good and Do What You Gotta Do plus stunning new jazz-blues inspired versions of songs from Hazel’s own back catalogue, Decadent Days and That’s Life. Rebecca (on a close friend who died of cancer in her thirties) from the Beyond The Breaking Glass album is also given a new twist. In These Shoes is Hazel’s take on a song originally written by the late lamented Kirsty MacColl. Hazel, of course, is no stranger to the live scene ever since striding into the spotlight with the cult movie Breaking Glass in 1980. From her early tours in the 1980s to her critically acclaimed partnership with harpist Cormac De Barra; her autobiographical theatre shows Beyond Breaking Glass and the Breaking Glass Live tour, she has been continually performing and writing and delighting audiences the world over.
