The music of THE CLASH is to be celebrated in a special show in London in the New Year.
Americana Clash!, part of AmericanaFest UK, will see a host of names from the UK folk and Americana scene playing a selection of songs from the Clash repertoire at the Oslo venue in Hackney on Monday 27 January.
The Clash and Americana, are of course, inextricably linked. When Texan songwriter JOE ELY played The Venue in London's Victoria in 1978, The Clash were in attendance and artist and band would spend the next few days hanging out at various establishments around town including Dingwalls and The Hope & Anchor. The following year, both bands would play the famed Armadillo World Headquarters venue in Austin, while Ely would support The Clash on their London Calling tour in 1980, hooking up whenever The Clash found themselves in Texas.
Much later, during the sessions for JOHNNY CASH's final album, Joe Strummer would join Cash on a recording of Bob Marley's 'Redemption Song'.
Apparently, the two Joes had planned to record an album together in Mexico, a project that was derailed when Strummer sadly passed away in December 2002.
Artists performing at the Americana Clash! event include FRANK TURNER, GRACE PETRIE, DANNY WILSON (of DANNY & THE CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD), PETER BRUNTNELL and more.
Proceeds from the gig will go to the Joe Strummer Foundation and Hackney Winter Night Shelter.
