The often overlooked 80s psychedelic revival gets a long-awaited overview this Spring with the release of a major new box-set from Cherry Red.
The three-CD Another Splash Of Colour: New Psychedelia In Brtiain 1980-85 anthology expands on a 1982 compilation that was released by WEA to capitalise on the scene which morphed out of the 1980 Mod revival with bands like MOOD SIX, THE PLAYN JAYN, THE HIGH TIDE and others, drawing crowds to nightspots like The Groovy Cellar and Alice In Wonderland and inspiring labels such as Creation and Whaam!
The 64-track set encompasses all facets of the UK scene, from early psych-punks THE BARRACUDAS, THE BRAINIAC 5 and THE SOFT BOYS (featuring Robyn Hitchcock) , Mods SQUIRE and PURPLE HEARTS, Essex janglers CLEANERS FROM VENUS (pictured) and LE MAT, major players JULIAN COPE, THE ICICLE WORKS and THE MONOCHROME SET to revitalised punks KNOX, CHARLIE HARPER, CAPTAIN SENSIBLE plus THE DAMNED in their psych-revivalist NAZ NOMAD & THE NIGHTMARES guise, plus Alice In Wonderland's flagship band - and the scene's only chart-toppers DOCTOR & THE MEDICS.
Complete with a weighty booklet including a 9,000 word essay, Another Splash Of Colour is released on 29 April, but is available to pre-order here.
Cleaners From Venus mainman Martin Newell plays London's Union Chapel on Sunday 6 March - tickets are available here.
