OFF! ON AGAIN!

SoCal punk vets OFF! return with a freaky new sci-fi video and news of a brand new album.

‘War Above Los Angeles’ is the first single to be taken from FREE LSD, the band’s first new album in eight years.

The album is the first to feature founder members Keith Morris (Black Flag, Cercle Jerks) and Dimitri Coats plus bassist Autry Fulbright II (…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead) and drummer Justin Brown (Thundercat, Flying Lotus, Herbie Hancock). It’s due out through Fat Possum on 30 September.

The video for ‘War Above Los Angeles’, featuring cameos from David Yow (Jesus Lizard), Don Nguyn, Chloe Dykstra, James Duval, D.H. Peligro (Dead Kennedys), is a first taste of the band’s forthcoming feature film FREE LSD, to accompany the release of the album.

“Since thinking of the album as a soundtrack to a weird sci-fi movie gave us permission to experiment, and the film explains, in a fantastical way, the creation of the album, they both go hand in hand as an overall art project,” explains Coats.

FANGS FOR THE NIGHT!

THE DAMNED have announced the release of a new live album and concert film.

SPOOK PATROL!

Fast-rising London punks GHOST CAR have just released a new single from their forthcoming debut album.

The band recently signed to One Little Independent for the release of the album Truly Trash from which the single ‘Sex’ is drawn.

The single is “about having an interaction with someone once and thinking more of it than it actually was,” they say. “Especially with social media, being able to see that person all the time, thinking you have a connection when really you just snogged them at a party once. It made us so happy to be a band formed by women from different parts of the world but with the same feelings and frustrations!”

Speaking about Truly Trash, they say, “This album is our way to express what bothers us, from personal interactions to international politics. We wanted to explore different themes in a simple way so that they could be accessible to everyone.”

‘Sex’ is available now on Spotify and all the usual platforms.

Set for release on 28 October, Truly Trash is available to pre-order here.

Ghost Car play The Victoria, Dalston, London on 7 August.

MC16 KEEP IT CLASSY!

Agit-punks MC16 are back with a new video which they’re premiering with Vive Le Rock!

‘Class War’ follows on from their ‘United States Of Generica’ single released back in November.

Back then, the band took a knock when their rehearsal space was trashed by local hoodlums, but it’ll take a lot more than that to keep this band down. In fact, as ‘Class War’ shows, they just get stronger. Rise above, indeed.

“We may not still live in the Victorian times of top hats and corsets for the rich and dead people’s clothes for the poor but our system is still built on the same outdated values, attitudes and hierarchies” explains bassist Quinn. “But it’s not just about salaries and money; it’s as much about the basics of right and wrong, morals, self-entitlement and access to influence and power. It will always be an unfair world because inequality starts as soon as you are born. My Mum didn’t get to choose whether she went private or not. That’s why there will always be a Class War because you will always be fighting someone or fighting for something”

‘Class War’ was recorded with producer and engineer Simon Hopkinson at Electric Bear Studios in Mansfield, and the video is the work of Will Hutchinson of Hutch Films.

‘Class War’ is available now from Bandcamp.

Catch MC16 live at the following dates…

Aug 3rd – 100 Club, London (w/ Spear of Destiny)
Aug 7th – Rebellion Festival, Blackpool
Aug 12th – Gig on the Farm, Abbeydore
Sept 4th – Mach Punk and Ska Festival, Machynlleth
Oct 29th – Star & Garter, Manchester (w/ 999)
Dec 17th – Westgarth Club, Middlesbrough

SLADE ISSUE LIVE BOX SET!

SLADE are to have some of their incredible live performances documented in a new box set.

As anybody who witnessed their amazing set at the 1980 Reading Festival will attest, the West Midlands chartbusters were at their very best when onstage, and their performance that day – as last minute replacements for Ozzy Osbourne’s Blizzard Of Ozz – catapulted them, rightly, back into the charts and the nations hearts.

Previously released in part as a four-track EP and a truncated Friday Rock Show recording, for the first time ever the whole of the Reading set is being made available as part of the 5-CD box set All The World Is A Stage.

The set also includes a previously officially unreleased recording of the band at London’s New Victoria Theatre from April ’75, recorded while the band were promoting the just released movie Slade In Flame. Also included is another unreleased set from Hucknall Miners’ Welfare Club from June 1980, just prior to their triumphant Reading return. An example of the venues the band had been reduced to playing at that point, the show nonetheless catches them giving their all as ever.

The box set is completed by the officially released live albums Slade Alive! – widely regarded as one of the finest live albums ever – and Slade On Stage, recorded at Newcastle City Hall in December ’81 and granted rave reviews across the board on its release the following year.

Set for release on 9 September through BMG, All the World Is A Stage is available to pre-order here.

GODFATHERS BACK ON THE BETA!

THE GODFATHERS have announced a brand new studio album for release in September.

Alpha Beta Gamma Delta is the band’s first new full-length since A Big Bad Beautiful Noise back in 2017. Since then they’ve undergone a major line-up overhaul, with guitarists Richie Simpson and Wayne Vermaak, bassist Jon Priestley and drummer Billy Duncanson joining founder and frontman Peter Coyne.

“Alpha Beta Gamma Delta is definitely one of the very best albums The Godfathers have ever made – it’s exciting, dark, dangerous contemporary rock & roll!” states Coyne.

Produced by Priestley, the 13-track album follows on from the double A-side single ‘I’m Not Your Slave’ c/w ‘Wild And Free’ released back in 2020, and is set for release on 16 September through Godfathers Recordings2.

The album release will be preceded on 26 August by a 4-tack EP Midnight Rider, featuring the album tracks ‘Midnight Rider’ and ‘OCD’ plus two tracks exclusive to this release, ‘When The Cowards Fall’ and ‘Fade Away’.

The Godfathers will soon be announcing tour dates to coincide with the release of the album.

Alpha Beta Gamma Delta and Midnight Rider are both available to pre-order here.

I’LL STILL BE DREAMING OF YOU, CROYDON!

The cultural enclave of Croydon is to have its punk and post-punk scenes celebrated with a new documentary film and compilation album.

Are They Hostile? is the brainchild of director Mark Williams and Griff Griffiths of the band BAD ACTORS, whose 1980 debut single gives the film its title.

Cited in some quarters as the ‘birthplace of punk’, thanks to its links with THE DAMNED and JOHNNY MOPED, Croydon spawned several great bands who never quite went overground as punk exploded on a national and international lever. Covering the late 70s to the early 80s, the documentary casts a spotlight on bands such as THE MARINES (pictured), THE DALEKS, THE HEROES, CASE, FANATICS and more from the once thriving scene built around such legendary venues as The Greyhound and The Star.

As Griffiths explains, “It’s also a film about being young, being passionate, being part of something.”

Are They Hostile? will premier at the David Lean Cinema in Croydon on 2 September with a Q&A afterwards by Griffiths and Williams, with an aftershow party nearby with special celebrity guests to be confirmed.

The film will be accompanied by the release of an 18-track vinyl and CD compilation, released through Damaged Goods, which is available to pre-order here.

THE CHATS’ AUSTRALIAN PUB CRAWL

Everyone’s favourite shed-dwelling Oz-punks THE CHATS have unveiled a new video from their forthcoming album.

‘I’ve Been Drunk In Every Pub In Brisbane’, is a celebration of the licensed establishments of the Queensland capital, bassist/singer Eamon Sandwith’s new home city. It’s taken from the band’s newly recorded second album Get Fucked, which is due out in August.

“Brisbane is quite a bit hotter than the rest of the country,” says Sandwith. “So it’s one of those places where it’s more acceptable to start drinking earlier. I reckon there would be 900 or so pubs that you would have to hit, and I have actually been to a good chunk of them, but if you were go to all of them, it would be hard to even remember which ones you’d been to, and which ones you hadn’t, especially if you’d got fucking pissed.”

RHODA TEARS IT UP!

RHODA DAKAR continues her series of classic covers with a version of the Marianne Faithfull evergreen ‘As Tears Go By’.

Originally written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards together with manager Andrew Loog Oldham, the song was a Top 10 hit for Faithfull in the summer of ’64. Later recorded by the Stones themselves, it’s also been covered by Nancy Sinatra, PP Arnold, Melanie and Avenged Sevenfold. This, however, is the first ever reggae version.

The fourth in Dakar’s series of 7″ covers for Sunday Best Recordings – which also includes ‘Every Day Is Like Sunday’, ‘The Man who sold The World’ and ‘Walking After Midnight’ – the track was produced by Phoenix City All-Stars guitarist Lenny Bignell and features Roger Rivas of The Aggrolites and Rivas Studios on keyboards.

“Beatles or Stones is a longtime discussion amongst people who remember their Sixties heyday, or near enough,” Dakar says. “Producer Lenny and I are firmly in the Stones camp. And, since Lynval saw them in Hyde Park in ’69, I’m claiming him as one of ours as well. Finding a Stones tune to cover successfully is another matter, of course. ‘As Tears Go By’ was written for a woman, Marianne Faithful, and for that reason didn’t require any great rethinking. We approached it with a Rocksteady / Early Reggae vibe, including the strings the UK versions always had. By the time we recorded the vocal, I’d had a year off thanks to Covid. So, it was indeed a week without cheese and daily practise!”

Mastered by dubstep pioneer Jason Goz at Transition Mastering, and featuring a dub version on the B-side, the series will continue until the release of Dakar’s new album in early 2023.

‘As Tears Go By’ is available to pre-order/stream/download here.

DROPKICK MURPHYS COVER WOODY

DROPKICK MURPHYS have just unveiled a video for their latest single.

Gambler’s lament ‘Two 6’s Upside Down’ is taken from the band’s forthcoming acoustic album This Machine Still Kills Fascists, inspired by and featuring the lyrics of dustbowl balladeer and American folksong legend Woody Guthrie. The album is their first since their 1998 debut Do Or Die, not to feature singer Al Barr, who is currently taking a break to care for his sick mother.

The video for the single, directed by Dave Stauble, was shot by the statue of Guthrie at the songwriter’s birthplace of Okemah, Oklahoma.

“‘Two 6’s Upside Down’ is acoustic, but it’s still tough,” says band founder Ken Casey. “It’s edgy and these lyrics are menacing. We just wanted to show right out of the gate that even though this album is acoustic, it’s still going to have some fire.”

Working once more with producer Ted Hutt, the band recorded the album at The Church Studio in Tulsa, not far from Okemah, and they were so inspired by the experience that they ended up recording enough songs to fill a second volume, due out next year.

‘Two 6’s Upside Down’ is available to stream/download here.

Set for release on 30 September through Dummy Luck Music via PIAS, This Machine Still Kills Fascists is available to pre-order here.
