Pub rock legend BRINSLEY SCHWARZ has unveiled a new video as a taster for his forthcoming new solo album.

‘You Drive Me To Drink’ is the second single from Tangled, following on from ‘Storm In The Hills’ at the start of the year. The new album comes five years after his unexpected debut solo album Unexpected.

Schwarz, along with Nick Lowe, was a founder member of the pub rock pioneers of the same name who, following a disastrous hype involving flying a ‘plane-load of journalists to New York to see them play a support slot at the Fillmore East, built a bridgehead on the London pub scene and beyond, arguably paving the way for punk.

When the band split, Schwarz briefly joined Ducks Deluxe before co-founding The Rumour to back newcomer Graham Parker. Continuing to work with Parker over the years, he’s produced and played with numerous other artists such as Desmond Dekker, Dr Feelgood, Rachel Sweet, Kirsty MacColl and Pointed Sticks.

‘You Drive Me To Drink’ is available to stream/download here.

Tangled is out on 3 September through Fretsore Records.

KILLING JOKE co-founder and drummer BIG PAUL FERGUSON celebrates the release of his debut solo album with a video which he’s premiering exclusively with Vive Le Rock!

‘The Unraveling’ is track 3 from the album Virtual Control which is out today through Cleopatra Records. Co-written with guitarist Mark Gemini Thwaite (The Mission, Theatre Of Hate, Peter Murphy), the song “recreates our distinctly modern condition of being inundated with mindless commands and digital instructions ‘Swipe left swipe right / Scroll up scroll down / Click here click there / Watch the little wheel spin round / And round and round‘.”

“The seemingly endless months where most of our interactions were online, were filled by a bombardment of images and disparate messages where the truth of anything became a fiction in itself,” says Paul. “Living our lives online, we have become marionettes pulled every which way by the latest catchphrase or trend. I hope this song and video shed a little light on the larger forces at work.”

The video is the work of award-winning video director Vicente Cordero of Industrialism Films.

Mixed by Tom Galgety, whose clients include Rammstein and Pixies as Killing Joke’s Pylon album, Virtual Control features guest appearances from Die Krupps mastermind Jürgen Engler and former Marilyn Manson cohort Tim Skold.

Available on CD and limited edition red vinyl, Virtual Control is available to order here and digitally here.

A new petition has been launched to have Birmingham rock’n’roll legend STEVE GIBBONS recognised with a star on the city’s Walk of the Stars.

Gibbons turns 80 next month and what better way to celebrate this momentous occasion and commemorate his contribution to the Second City’s – and the UK’s cultural legacy, believes petition founder Jim the Hat, than to have him included on the star-studded Broad Street pavement that was begun by Ozzy Osbourne in 2007 and also includes the likes of Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Roy Wood and Jasper Carrott.

Born in the suburb of Harborne, Gibbons began his career in 1960 with The Dominettes before continuing throughout the British beat boom with the brilliantly-named bands The Uglys and Balls. He would later do a three-month stint in legendary Brum rock’n’roll breeding ground The Idle Race before they morphed into The Steve Gibbons Band in the mid70s. Building an explosive reputation on the pub circuit, the Band were invited to tour the UK, Europe and the US with The Who, leading to chart success with the No.12 hit ‘Tulane’ and the essential live album Caught In The Act.

More recently, Gibbons has continued touring, as a member of tribute band The Dylan Project and in his own right, as well as fundraising for various causes.

In the new edition of Vive Le Rock!, we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of THE SPECIALS’ classic single ‘Ghost Town’ with band founder Jerry Dammers. Here Vive‘s man in the 2-tone suit Guy Shankland takes us through his Top 10 Specials tracks. And once you get to the bottom, you can find out how to win some scintillating Specials vinyl…
  1. ‘Vote For Me’
Stunning 2019 comeback single. Four-plus decades on and it seems we may still need The Specials to guide us. ‘Ghost Town’ revisited circa 2019/20.
  1. ‘The Boiler’
Brutal and traumatising single about date rape featuring a Rhoda Dakar tour de force on lead vocals.
  1. ‘You’re Wondering Now’
The emotive debut album closer can still bring a cannonball size lump to the throat.
  1. ‘Do The Dog’
Who am I to say but the speedy delivery married with the fast tempo and devastating poetry made this the perfect reunion gig opener.
  1. ‘Blank Expression’
Terry Hall’s laconic vocals fit the mood and style of the song so perfectly it’s hard to see the join. A classic.
  1. ‘Too Much Too Young’
If school kids weren’t aware of the dangers of teenage pregnancy they were now. A Grange Hill generation got a hard-hitting rude boy meets rude girl sex education lesson.
  1. ‘Free Nelson Mandela’
As relevant and as well known as Band-Aid. Another Jerry Dammers Specials (AKA) masterpiece.
  1. ‘Concrete Jungle’
Chanting, violence and tribal alliances get ground into the inner city pavement. A song that’s been sung by both Radiation and Hall.
  1. ‘Gangsters’
An entire movement gets drop-kicked into life by screeching tyres and Neville’s “Bernie Rhodes knows don’t argue!“ intro. Timeless 2-Tone.
  1. ‘Ghost Town’
Haunting, morose and politically on point. The original Specials swan song is still possibly their greatest song and statement.

To be in with a chance of winning Specials singles on 7″ and 12″, just send an email to with ‘Specials Competition’ in the subject and the answer to this question:

Where did the band perform for their episode of the classic TV series Rock Goes To College?

South Coast powerpoppers THE STAYAWAKES have a brand new video which they’re premiering exclusively with Vive Le Rock!

As clear a declaration of intent as any, ‘Power Pop Massacre’ is taken from the Southsea quartet’s second album Pop Dreamz, which is out now through Engineer Records.

Shot on Hayling Island beach by Ben Horlock, the video is a nod to The Beach Boys, with their candy-striped shirts and frat-house barnets, but the golden chords and fuzzy tones follow the signposts of the hairier 90s sounds of Silver Sun, The Lemonheads and Teenage Fanclub to power pop perfection.

‘Power Pop Massacre’ is available on all the usual streaming platforms from today.

Pop Dreamz is available physically from Engineer Records and Bandcamp and digitally here.

Legendary New York rocker SONNY VINCENT has unveiled a new video from his brand new album.

‘The End Of Light’ is the first track to be aired from Snake Pit Therapy, the album sharing its name with Vincent’s recent warts’n’all autobiography.

The 15-track album features various luminaries from the NYC punk and rock scene, including members of Corpse Grinders, The Leathewoods and Dawnrider, as well as sometime Stooges bassist Jimmy Recca.

Vincent came to fame through his membership of notorious NYC band Testors, who were regulars on the same CBGB’s and Max’s Kansas City scene, alongside the likes of The Cramps, Suicide, The Dead Boys and Teenage Jesus And The Jerks. He also played for several years with ex-Velvets Moe Tucker and Sterling Morrison, also working with the likes of Scott Asheton, Cheetah Chrome and The Replacements’ Bob Stinson along the way.

More recently Vincent and Recca have both appeared as members of The Limit alongside Bobby Liebling of cult rockers Pentagram on the widely praised album Caveman Logic , which Vincent produced.

‘The End Of Light’ is available now on Spotify

Set for release on 17 September through Finland’s Svart Records, Snake Pit Therapy is available to pre-order here

Covid has once again thwarted LOVELY EGGS’ touring plans as they are forced to reschedule their tour dates yet again.

The dates had been scheduled to take place back in April in support of the Lancaster psych-pop duo’s I Am Moron album. With the arrival of Covid on the scene the dates were rescheduled and rescheduled. Now with the Government’s decision to delay the lifting of restrictions, the pair have been forced to reschedule the shows (hopefully) one last time.

“It’s part of the DIY culture,” explains singer/guitarist Holly Ross. “You just don’t give up. So as soon as we found out that re-opening had been pushed back, we set about heaving all our tour dates back into late July/August. We didn’t want to wait till next year. And within 24 hours we’d re-booked our UK tour for the seventh time! We are all just ready for the party now. Everyone has been looking forward to these shows for over a year and we can’t wait to bring it to em!”

The dates follow on from the release of their new single on 9 July, ‘I, Moron’ featuring special guest Iggy Pop. The b-side features their version of Pop’s ‘Dum Dum Boys’ from his 1977 solo album The Idiot.

“Being in The Lovely Eggs we’re kind of used to surreal experiences but collaborating with Iggy Pop takes the biscuit,” exclaims Holly. “It’s actually unbelievable. For him just to say nothing but “moron” over and over again fitted in with the sentiment of the song perfectly. He just GOT it. We are all morons. In a world of moronic things. In a world of moronic ideas. You are moron. I am Moron. We are Moron.”

“For the b-side it made real sense to us to cover one of Iggy’s songs off The Idiot,” adds drummer David Blackwell. “There seemed to be a real synchronicity to it. I had this album on cassette, and it was one of the first albums that I got really into. ‘Dum Dum Boys’ struck a chord with us, kind of missing the old days and the old gang we used to hang out with.”

Essex pop-punks PET NEEDS are back with another new single and video.

‘Overcompensating’ is the latest track to be taken from the Colchester quartet’s debut album Fractured Party Music which is out now through Xtra Mile.

“The whole tune was built around the line ‘we’ll laugh about this one day (separately and at the expense of each other)’,” says frontman Johnny Marriott. “It then grew into a story about a desperate attempt to prove to people that life is brilliant when in reality we all have rough days and we’re all vulnerable at times. To any old friends who think they may have influenced this song – don’t worry! It’s almost definitely purely fictitious.”

Stream/download ‘Overcompensating’ here.

Emerging from a now thriving punk and rock scene based in and around Britain’s ancient capital, Pet Needs will be joining FRANK TURNER and other Xtra Mile acts at a series of outdoor ‘gatherings’. Full dates are…

Up and coming Polish garage punks MORON’S MORONS have a new video which they’re premiering exclusively with Vive Le Rock!

The high energy and slightly deranged ‘White Brothel Creepers’ is the title track from the band’s brand new EP, out through Wanda Records. It’s the Warsaw quartet’s first release since their frantic and very well recieved debut album Looking For Danger, which came out early last year through Slovenly Records.

Describing themselves as “ugly and weird”, they claim that they’re able to “provide you with the same kind of kicks and thrills that are unleashed by both exploitation films and porno mags”. You can be the judge of that. Kleenex?

Nottinghamshire folk-punks FEROCIOUS DOG have just unveiled a first video from their forthcoming new album.

‘Pentrich Rising’ commemorates the Last English Revolution when, in 1817, when two-hundred men from the Derbyshire village of Pentrich and surrounding villages marched on Nottingham in the belief that they were taking part in a nationwide insurrection.

“The idea for the writing of this song goes back over many years,” explains frontman Ken Bonsall. “The history behind the Last English Revolution in Pentrich is well-known, but being so close to where I live I felt that I had to write this song. A close friend and work colleague at the coal mine said that his family were related to William Turner, one of the main characters in the Pentrich Rising. For that reason I chose to write the song through William Turner’s eyes. To shoot the video at the old Derby Gaol, the original place of his imprisonment and execution just added more historical fact behind the song.”

Stream/download ‘Pentrich Rising’ here.

The single is taken from the album The Hope, which is due out on 15 October through Graphite Records. It’s available to pre-order here.
