LAST GREAT DREAMERS ANNOUNCE SINGLE AND DATES!

Powerpop rockers LAST GREAT DREAMERS are back on the road, with a new single.

‘Primitive Man’ is the third single to be lifted from their acclaimed album 13th Floor Renegades which was released in April. The track’s available now from iTunes, Amazon and Spotify.

The band have spent the spring and summer gigging, including a number of festival appearances and their first ever shows in Norway. The band’s album has recently been picked up for regular airplay from legendary US powerpop maven Rodney Bingenheimer on his Sirius XM Underground Garage radio show, enabling them to hook up with a US agent and begin planning US dates for the new year.

“It’s been quite a year,” says guitarist Slyder. “The reaction to 13th Floor Renegades has been amazing, we’ve received some fantastic reviews and the songs have been going down a storm live too. We’ve also had some airplay in the USA and Scandinavia so we are planning to get out to both those places soon. ‘Primitive Man’ is a real stomping track, we now close the set with this, it’s already become a fan favourite”

REBELLION DIARY!

Sobered up from Rebellion yet?  Then have a read of Paula Frost’s report and relive all those sunny Blackpool memories….

This year the Vive Le Rock! crew made our way up to Blackpool for a long weekend of punk rock at the Winter Gardens! The festival has been running for 22 years and this year featured 350 bands across 4 days and 7 stages. Needless to say it’s the biggest event in the punk rock calendar year on year and one we look forward to.

Every day Max Splodge, the singer of ‘Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps’ kicks the Rebellion day off with his comedy bingo show. You won’t want to win one of his prizes, I’ve seen him give out a bag of out-of-date Bad Manners flyers.

Thursday kicked off with some Vive Le Rock! flyering outside the venue. Frontman Djamel from The Blue Carpet Band took a break from his usual role of playing Cramps style rock’n’roll and was recruited as part of our street team! We swerved through the busy crowds of punks enjoying another hot summer’s day and spoke to everyone we could, making sure they knew about Vive Le Rock, the only punk magazine in the UK. It was a great way of getting to know more of the punk family.

Backstage we bumped into Lynda and Coppo, two infamous punks who’d been on the scene since ’77 and knew all the bands (Coppo has most of them tattooed on his back!). Then someone called my name, it was John, the drummer of IDLES! They were playing the Empress Ballroom later and the rest of the band came over for a quick chat, including the big bushy bearded bassist known for his dancing in the ‘Stendhal Syndrome’ video.

It was time to venture further into the Winter Gardens, on the way I caught up with Jenna Talia of Glitter Trash, then met the controversial Soap Girls who had their boobs out as usual. There were tons of punks I hadn’t seen in years and it was great to link up with everyone again. We caught Call Me Malcolm on the introducing stage and then The Bar Stool Preachers hijacked me and lead singer T.J. McFaull took me to see one of his favourite bands The Menzingers. Steve Ignorant’s Slice of Life played the introducing stage. His acoustic crew of seated musicians drew a big crowd of singalong punks to the Opera House. Accompanied by Carol Hodge on piano, Ignorant performed a theatrical set dressed in a smart suit and braces with a trilby. Their moving performances of songs like ‘The Way Things Are’ and ‘Slice of Life’ brought some punks to tears.

IDLES played at 20:55 and sheered through ‘Mother’, ‘Well Done’ and ‘Stendhal Syndrome’ plus their new pro-love pro-immigration anthem ‘Danny Nedelko’ during their fifty-minute set. Frontman Joe climbed all over the stage and got into the audience whilst the rest of the band rolled around thrashing guitars in a frenzied intoxicating performance.

Later that night legendary punks the Buzzcocks headlined the Empress Ballroom and instilled that mystic feeling of revolution in a chandeliered, elegant room filled with punk rockers losing their minds. It was the flawless beginning to a weekend of anarchy and protest music.

There are too many other incredible moments to recount but you can read all about Rebellion 2018 in full in the new edition of Vive Le Rock!, on sale now.

HANTERHIR UNVEIL VIDEO AND DATES!

Fast-rising Cornish psych-rockers HANTERHIR have a new video and single, which they’re premiering exclusively with Vive Le Rock!

‘Hello Sunshine’ is a substantially edited version of the monumental opening track from their widely acclaimed new triple album The Saving Of Cadan, released last month through Easy Action Records. The video is the work of renowned Cornish new wave film director Mawgan Lewis.

The single is available now from iTunes, Amazon and Spotify.

“‘Hello Sunshine’ was the first song we wrote for the album that was originally going to be 10 songs on a 10 inch played by 10 people with only 10 copies printed,” explains band frontman Ben Harris. “Somehow, writing an almost 10 minute song gave us the hint that we were never going to fit all the songs on that format.

“We filmed ‘Hello Sunshine’ with Mawgan from Purple Knif in a 30 degree village hall that my first ever band rehearsed in. It hadn’t changed much, and possibly hadn’t been painted since I was last in there.”

The band are playing a series of dates throughout the late summer and autumn, including a rare London show at The Victoria in Dalston with special guests THE BRAINIAC 5, legends of the 70s Cornish free festival scene.

Full dates are…

20 Sept – The Old Bakery, Truro (w/ Dom Duff)  tickets
28 Sept – Harvest Gathering Festival, Newquay   tickets
21 Oct – The Sussex Arms, Tunbridge Wells
22 Oct – The Victoria, Dalston, London  tickets
23 Oct – The Railway Hotel, Southend on Sea

The Saving Of Cadan is available on triple-vinyl and double-CD here.

THE AINTS! ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM!

Former SAINTS guitarist ED KUEPPER returns next month with the debut album by his new band THE AINTS!

Kuepper previously used the name The Aints during the early 90s for gigs featuring Kent Steedman from The Celibate Rifles on bass and drummer Tim Reeves.

The new project, which came together last year, sees Kuepper teaming up with Rifles and New Christs drummer Paul Larsen Loughhead, Sunnyboys bassist Peter Oxley, jazz pianist Alister Spence and trumpeter and brass arranger Eamon Dilworth.

The Church Of Simultaneous Existence draws on material written during Kuepper’s original period with The Saints from 1973 to ’78 and a video trailer reflects the brass-infused-punk sound of his final album with the band, Prehistoric Sounds.

“Things had started to move fairly quickly once The Saints recorded ‘(I’m) Stranded’ in mid ’76,” remembers Kuepper. “We recorded three albums over the next two years as well as doing a fair it of touring, and for a while things were looking very promising. However, business problems, compounded by personal and artistic differences meant the band didn’t get around to recording all the material I had lying around….so forty (very) odd years later it occurred to me that these songs might well have made up a hypothetical 4th album….The Church Of Simultaneous Existence…..the songs that refused to die….performed in much the way they would have had the band not split up in 1978.’’

The Church Of Simultaneous Existence is due for release through ABC Records on 21 September and is available to pre-order in various bundles here.

Fans of The Saints, the Rifles, the Sunnyboys and other Aussie bands from the late 70s and 80s would do well to check out the Australian Underground playlist on Spotify.

GIMME GIMME SLOKS TREATMENT!

Ace Italian garage-punks SLOKS have just revealed a new video.

The brilliantly-titled ‘Dad Can Dance’ is taken from the band’s debut album Holy Motor, which is set for release through Voodoo Rhythm Records on 21 September.

The trio of Ivy Claudy, Peter Chopsticks, Buddy Fuzz came together in Turin in 2015 and initially came to the attention of Vive Le Rock earlier this year via the video for their single ‘Use Me’.

Voodoo Rhythm head honcho Reverend Beatman caught them opening a local alternative festival in Italy and packed them off to Swampland Studio in Toulouse to lay down their debut album with producer Lo Spider.

“It was so Destructive and Suicidal Dangerous and amazing eye catching the same time,” says Beatman. “The Female Singer Ivy Claudy almost killed herself in her act strangling herself with the microphone cable and screamed as loud that she spit blood on the same time Buddy Fuzz wanked constantly his guitar overdosing totally distorting and endless feedback they were so Negative and creative the same time .. it was defiantly way too much for the audience and most of them left immediately except Us … and they had to open the festival anyways hahaha!!”

Pre-orders are not yet available but when they are, you’ll find them on the band’s Voodoo Rhythm page.

MISSION MAN UNVEILS SOLO E.P!

THE MISSION guitarist SIMON HINKLER releases a new solo EP next month.

Simon’s musical career began with Sheffield post-punks ARTERY before he split to join the nascent PULP, playing on and co-writing the band’s 1983 debut album It. Having rejoined Artery he was recruited in 1985 to the newly formed Mission by SISTERS OF MERCY escapees Wayne Hussey and Craig Adams.

Leaving after five years, he began developing his solo career as well as the band MINDFEEL, before moving to the desert of New Mexico for 13 years. It’s tracks from this period that form the basis of the EP Moving On.

“Every time I come back to making music I’m reminded why I started doing it in the first place,” he says. “This EP has been a long time coming but I’m very pleased with the way it’s turned out.”

The 5-track Moving On EP is set for release on 7 September through Correctitude Records. It’s available to pre-order here.

PIECE OF THE ACTION!

North London mod legends THE ACTION are the subject of a new career-spanning box set.

Although they only released six singles in their lifetime, none of which were hits, the Kentish Town band have become revered as one of the finest outfits of the original mod heyday, eventually evolving into free-flowing psych rock faves MIGHTY BABY during the late 60s and early 70s.

The Action were the first band signed by Beatles producer George Martin after he left EMI to set up his own company AIR Productions. In due course, he produced the band’s five singles issued on Parlophone between 1965 and 1967 as well as tracks intended for a never-released album.

All those tracks are included in the 4-disc Shadows & Reflections: The Complete Recordings 1964-1968. The set also brings together TV and radio recordings, rehearsal, demo and audition tapes and alternative mixes, many of which are available on CD for the first time, making it the band’s most comprehensive anthology ever.

The set is rounded out with a 36-page booklet, including numerous rare and unseen photos and 16,000-word sleevenotes by Action authority David Wells.

Set for release on Grapefruit through Cherry Red on 26 October, Shadows & Reflections: The Complete Recordings 1964-1968 is available to pre-order here.

‘The Upside Of Being Down’ is taken from the band’s new 5-track EP Good Friends, Bad Luck which is set for release through Real Ghost Records on 28 September.

We are super lucky to have each other to rely on to make the best of the bad situations.”

Formed in 2014, the band released their self-titled debut album last year, and since then have played successful tours of the UK, Europe and the USA. FULLER MOON!

New York punk iconoclasts TELEVISION are to have their landmark debut album given the deluxe vinyl reissue treatment for the first time ever.

Released on Elektra Records in February 1977, Marquee Moon really moved the goalposts on the still juvenile punk rock pitch, with its complex song structures – including the 10-minute title track – and prog-like guitar interplay. For the linchpins of the nascent NYC punk scene coalescing around CBGB’s, this was a real left-turn, underscoring the rulebook-shredding anything-is-possible ethos of the era; much talked about, yet still, in reality seldom seen.

This new deluxe double blue vinyl set, features the eight original tracks, plus five additional tracks originally released on the 2003 CD reissue, (some making their vinyl debut here), including alternate takes of ‘See No Evil’, ‘Friction’ and ‘Marquee Moon’, the full-length version of their classic non-album debut single ‘Little Johnny Jewel’, and an instrumental track.

The full tracklisting is…

Side one:

‘See No Evil’

‘Venus’

‘Friction’

‘Marquee Moon’

Side two:

‘Elevation’

‘Guiding Light’

‘Prove It’

‘Torn Curtain’

Side three:

‘Little Johnny Jewel’ (Parts 1 & 2)

‘See No Evil’ (Alternate Version)

‘Friction’ (Alternate Version)

Side four:

‘Marquee Moon’ (Alternate Version)

‘Untitled’ (Instrumental)

The deluxe vinyl Marquee Moon will be available through Rhino on 2 October.

EXHIBITION FOR KILLING JOKE ARTIST!

Artist and designer Mike Coles is to have an exhibition of his work in East London later this month.

The artist, who’s known for his work with Killing Joke, The Orb and the Malicious Damage label, which he co-founded, has plundered his back catalogue, remixing it to produce a deck of 56 playing cards, alongside a collection of 56 hilariously deranged mercenary rhymes in the style of the traditional nursery rhyme, but with a twisted modern slant.

The exhibition Over the Hills and Back for Tea will feature all 56 artworks plus a chilling and disturbing audio installation of found sound and spoken word. All the artworks will be for sale.

The exhibition takes place from 25 to 29 August at 5th Base Gallery, Heneage Street (off Brick Lane), London E1 5LJ.

Cincinatti post-punks AMPLINE have just unveiled a brand new video for the track ‘Shrunken Heads’.

This abrasive punk barn-burner’s taken from the trio’s fifth full-length album Passion Relapse, which is out now through Sofaburn Records.

Kevin Schmidt, Rick McCarty and Mike Montgomery came together as Ampline in 2001, since when, they’ve toured widely across the US, Europe and the UK. T.V. SMITH BACK WITH NEW ALBUM!

Former ADVERTS frontman T.V. SMITH is back with a new album and tour.

Land Of The Overdose is set for release on 14 September through JKP Records, the label of German band DIE TOTEN HOSEN, the German punk legends with whom Smith recorded and released an entire studio album – Useless: The Very Best Of TV Smith – something they have never done with any other artist.

More than forty years after finding chart success with Devon punk legends The Adverts, Smith has morphed into and insightful and incisive political troubadour, playing in excess of 100 gigs a year.

“It‘s been a long journey from 1977,” reflects Smith. “I used to think that punk rock was a one-off protest movement, but sadly now in 2018 there is even more to protest about. The punk spirit lives on. In Land Of The Overdose I‘ve tried to sum up everything I feel about what‘s wrong with the world and what we can do about it. The only compensation for me about the awful state we find ourselves in is that it’s inspired me to come up with some of the best songs I’ve ever written. I hope this album sends out a positive message that if we recognise the problems in the world things can start to change for the better, and that music can be a force for the good.”

Smith will be taking his message to the masses with shows at….

23.08.2018  Shoreham – Duke Of Wellington
24.08.2018  Brenchley – Beer Festival
31.08.2018  Stourbridge – Katy Fitzgeralds

SUICIDAL TENDENICIES UNVEIL NEW ALBUM!

Cali crossover legends SUICIDAL TENDENCIES are back next month with a brand new album.

STill Cyco Punk After All These Years is a reworking of an album originally recorded by ST frontman Mike Muir back in 1995, released under the name Cyco Miko and featuring Sex Pistol Steve Jones.

“Although the 13 years I was in Suicidal at the time, I did things I never dreamed I’d have the chance to, or could happen, there were still way too many times that were extremely difficult to handle”, explains Mike. “Basically, ‘Love Music, don’t Like the other stuff’. Anyhow, remembering that original love for music made me want to do a Punk STyle record and at the time I didn’t feel it was, could or should be an ST album.”

Now STill Cyco Punk After All These Years re-imagines those songs, newly recorded with legendary former SLAYER drummer Dave Lombardo behind the kit.

“I felt it not only could be, but it should be an ST album,” continues Muir. “Not retro, but taking it 25 years forward and make it a modern Cyco Punk record. Extremely dangerous after so many years, but damn, I love these songs and I feel them so much. Perhaps surprisingly more now than when I was 30.”

STill Cyco Punk After All These Years is set for release on 7 September through the band’s own Suicidal imprint, but it’s available to pre-order here.
