Legendary Bucks garage-psych warriors THEE HYPNOTICS are set to return for a series of dates this spring.

Playing their first shows for 20 years, the band will have a major anthology out to coincide.

Formed in High Wycombe in the late 80s under the influence of the MC5, The Stooges and The Doors, Thee Hypnotics immediately drew attention to themselves with a series of incendiary gigs and the classic ‘Justice In Freedom’ and ‘Soul Trader’ singles.

Capturing their onstage energy with their live debut album Live’r Than God, they quickly found fortune in the US, where they were the first UK signing to Sub Pop, eventually hooking up with Rick Rubin’s American Recordings for their third and final studio album The Very Crystal Speed Machine, produced by Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson.

Singer Jim Jones would later go on to front Black Moses, The Jim Jones Revue and The Righteous Mind. Reuniting with guitarist Ray Hanson, drummer Phil Smith and bassist Jeremy Cottingham, the band play the following dates….

29 March – Blue Devils, Orleans, France
30 March – Petit Bain, Paris, France
31 March – Soundhouse, Leicester
1 April – The Cluny, Newcastle
4 April – Le Pub, Newport
5 April – King Tuts, Glasgow
6 April – Hare & Hounds (Large Room), Birmingham

Roman stompers GIUDA return with a brand new single at the end of March.

The band, who tore the roof off the O2 at Vive Le Rock‘s Punk Rock Pins festival back in 2016, are newly signed to UK rock label Rise Above for the aptly-named ‘Rock’n’Roll Music’, which was recorded live to harness the power of the onstage Giuda experience for which they are rightly renowned.

Back by ‘Born Under A Bad Sign’, the single will be released exclusively on 7″ vinyl on 30 March and will be celebrated with a special 2-night launch party at The Lexington in London on 6 and 7 April.

The release will also be heralded by a video shot on 35mm tape by top Italian director Nicola Piovesan.

Our February cover stars THE DAMNED have finally announced details of their new album!

Their first new album in 10 years, Evil Spirits was recorded in 9 days at Atomic Sound Studios, Brooklyn with legendary Bowie and T Rex producer Tony Visconti. It also marks the return to the band of Black Album and Strawberries period bassist Paul Gray.

“We deliberately recorded the album retro style,” explains Captain Sensible. “The same way our debut album was made, basically. There’s something wonderful about the seventies sounds; glam, rock and punk records, they all sound so great and Tony specialises in beautifully crafted old school production. He had us all playing live, bashing it out in the same room with a focus on getting the initial band version of each song as close as possible to the finished thing.”

Evil Spirits is set for release on 13 April via Search and Destroy/Spinefarm. It’s available to pre-order here.

The album is preceded by a single, ‘Standing On The Edge Of Tomorrow’.

“It’s supposed to be very optimistic, even though it’s about a dark subject,” says Dave Vanian. “As an artist, you can’t help but reflect the times, because that’s what art does. I think we always do it, but in a slightly different way. So a song like ‘Standing…’ may seem quite joyous and uplifting musically, but some of the lyrics might be about quite dark things. That’s what I’d like to think this album is – an uplifting album, not a moaning old album – not ‘this is terrible, and that’s terrible’, and then not offering any answers. It’s more a case of, ‘If we get it together, maybe we could change things a bit’.”

As previously announced, The Damned kick off their UK tour this Friday 26 January in Newcastle, culminating in a pair of London shows on 16 and 17 February. Full dates are….

26th January – Newcastle, O2 Academy
27th January – Dundee, Caird Hall

Legendary Essex punks THE NEWTOWN NEUROTICS are the be the subject of a new documentary.

Formed in Harlow in 1979 in direct response to the draconian right-wing policies of Thatcher’s government, and casting a spotlight on the urban ennui facing the youth in newtown England,  they lit a radical fire under the second wave of UK punk, fuelled by a series of rabble-rousing singles like the self-explanatory punk disco floorfiller ‘Kick Out The Tories’ and ‘Living With Unemployment’, and the classic albums Beggars Can Be Choosers and Kickstarting A Backfiring Nation.

The work of film-maker Luke Baker, Kick Out will tell the band’s story through the input of band members and other key figures, including Steve Lamacq, Phil Jupitus, Attila The Stockbroker and Billy Bragg.

Says Baker, “The aim of Kick Out is to capture the essence of the time, explore the events which molded the band’s worldview and examine their place in British music history.”

A crowdfunding page has been set up to enable Baker to complete the film and fans and wellwishers can contribute here.

A first list of acts has been announced for this year’s CAMDEN ROCKS, once again proudly sponsored by Vive Le Rock!

Now in its seventh year, the one day festival will take over the North London rock’n’roll enclave on Saturday 2 June with the likes of MAXIMO PARK, PiL, THE PROFESSIONALS, POP WILL EAT ITSELF, RAGING SPEEDHORN, URBAN VOODOO MACHINE, SONIC BOOM SIX and German legends BEATSTEAKS.

“I’ve been trying to book Public Image Limited for years so it’s great to finally have them playing Camden Rocks this year,” enthuses event organiser Chris McCormack. “John Lydon and the Sex Pistols are the reason I got into music, easily the biggest influence personally and I’m sure for a lot of bands playing the festival. PiL at the Electric Ballroom on their 40th anniversary is going to be incredible.”

“As always, the festival is as much about the emerging talent out there as it is the more established bands so get down early to catch some of these great new artists before they go supernova.”

“I’m also super excited about having Beatsteaks over from Germany,” continues McCormack. “They’re a fantastic live band. Not many people know them in the UK which is crazy but hopefully we can help change that.”

Venues participating this year include Koko, Electric Ballroom, The Underworld, Dingwalls, Proud, The Cuban, Monarch, The, Lyttelton Arms, Camden Assembly, Devonshire Arms, Roundhouse Studio, Dublin Castle, Blackheart, Fiddlers Elbow, Dingwalls Canalside, Camden Cavern @ Belushis, The Hawley Arms, Brewdog, Camden Market and The Crescent.

More names and tickets priced at a very reasonable £39.50 can be found on the Camden Rocks website.

Essex legends EDDIE & THE HOT RODS have announced that 2018 will be their final year of touring.

First formed in 1975, the Canvey Island band joined the dots between pub rock and punk, enjoying a string of chart singles including ‘Teenage Depression’, ‘Quit This Town’ and the evergreen ‘Do Anything You Wanna Do’.  Despite a few line-up changes over the years, the band, still fronted by Barrie Masters, have shown in recent years that they’re still a dynamite live act and are bowing out on a high.

It’s not all bad news though, as next month the band get to christen a brand new local venue.

Club Foot at Burnt Mill Academy in Harlow replaces the Essex town’s legendary venue The Square, which, after a long battle, closed a year ago with the Hot Rods playing the final night.

Hot Rods guitarist Richard Holgarth, a former co-owner of The Square and Burnt Mill student, says, “We are trying to keep live music going in the town. Club Foot is the nearest thing we have to a venue which can afford artistically to put music on in the town which does not follow the usual format of cover bands. It’s quite a gamble for pubs to put on original music and that’s what The Square was all about and we hope Club Foot will be about.”

The Hot Rods play Club Foot, Harlow on 2 February with support from CYANIDE PILLS and LOS PEPES. Tickets priced £10 are available here.

The band also play Putney Half Moon this Saturday 19 January, and have festival appearances at Undercover in April and the Vive Le Rock-sponsored Strummercamp in May. Full dates are….

19 Jan – The Half Moon, Putney, London
2 Feb – Club Foot, Burnt Mill Academy, Harlow
17 Feb – The Roadmender, Northampton

Trading in their own brand of ‘American Music’, combining rockabilly, rock’n’roll, rhythm’n’blues and punk, the band first formed by guitar-playing brothers Phil and Dave Alvin in 1978, emerging out of the same cross-cultural L.A. punk scene that nurtured the likes of THE GUN CLUB, LOS LOBOS, X, BLACK FLAG and THE GO-GOS. Signing to noted punk label Slash Records, they later impacted on rootsier end of the mid-80s Paisley Underground movement.

The current line-up features Phil Alvin and fellow founder-members John Bazz and Bill Bateman, plus lead guitarist Keith Wyatt.

Pub-based radio station BOOGALOO RADIO is holding a special launch-party this month!

Based at The Boogaloo on Archway Road in North London, it’s the world’s first and only 24/7 online radio station broadcasting inside a pub.

The storied boozer has been making a name for itself in rock’n’roll circles for the best part of two decades. Various Libertines worked behind the bar, Shane MacGowan lived upstairs and the likes of Nick Cave, Joe Strummer, The Streets, Sinead O’Connor, Primal Scream, Ken Kesey, Howard Marks and many more have been regulars over the years.

Boogaloo Radio was founded by DJ Jenn Crothers and Gerry O’Boyle, the landlord of The Boogaloo, and former owner of the infamous Filthy Mac Nasty’s pub.

Gerry says “Boogaloo Radio is the most exciting thing we have ever done. We are able to share the pub, its musical heritage, its amazing presenting talent and the chaos of operating an online radio station broadcasting to 227 countries from an old bin shed in the pub beer garden in true punk rock guerrilla style. If we were a book, we’d be Please Kill Me…

Jenn adds, “Using the original 1960s American FM radio format where the presenter is also the curator, alongside modern technology we’ve built a direct bridge between host and listener, creating that feeling of listening to one of your good friends. It’s an old formula, brought to you by modern technology, and we’re doing it from the back of a pub. The aim is for listeners to feel like they are in on the excitement. The pub has become the station and vice versa. Our plan is to live stream everything that happens – gigs, debates, comedy, pub quizzes and DJ sets.”

Boogaloo Radio DJs include the likes of pub rock supremo and Stiff Records founder Dave Robinson (pictured),  The Libertines, Bernard Butler, Jack White’s Third Man Books, Ace Records, The Magic Numbers, Shane MacGowan and David Morrissey, while so far guests have included Holly Johnson, Clem Burke, Blood Red Shoes, Bez from Happy Mondays,  Irvine Welsh, Madness and Johnny Marr.

The launch night takes place at The Boogaloo – where else?! – on Thursday 25 January. You can listen live at booglaooradio.com.

Texan rocker ASH GRAY is set to release a new album at the end of the month.

Originally from Austin and now based in Sheffield, the guitarist recorded parts of Chicken Wire in both cities, using various friends and acquaintances from the local music scenes.

Following on from 2014’s Once I Got Burned, the album was mixed by Grammy-nominated Austin producer Chris ‘Frenchie’ Smith (Young Heart Attack, Meat Puppets, Datsuns, …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead), and is packaged in a sleeve designed by renowned Sheffield poster artist Martin Bedford.

Speaking about the recording, Gray says, “The album represents a nice bridge that’s been developing between Sheffield and Austin in the three years that I’ve called Sheffield home. I met so many amazing musicians in Sheffield and have tightened connections with old and new acquaintances in Austin since I began working on these recordings and I was interested in trying to include everyone that I’d been playing with.”

First coming to prominence in the UK at the end of the 90s with punkgrass outfit THE HIGH-CLASS FAMILY BUTCHERS, Gray returned to Austin where he fronted glamsters STUNGUN, before relocating to New York City to play guitar with legendary biker band CYCLE SLUTS FROM HELL and form his own psych outfit ASH GRAY & THE GIRLS.

Gray plays a series of dates across Germany and The Netherlands in early February, before returning to play an official album launch in Sheffield. Full dates are….

2 Feb – Geyger Gallery, Berlin (D)
4 Feb – Barnaby’s Blues Bar, Brunswick (D)
