Following the sudden cancellation of the Westworld Calling gig at Islington Academy this Saturday 2 Sept, two of the bands due to play – CHRON GEN and 1919 – have managed to arrange a last minute gig just round the corner at Elektrowerkz club.
Westworld Calling was initially scheduled to also feature THE RUTS DC and CHELSEA. No reason has yet been given for the cancellation but a rematch has been promised for 2018.
Elektrowerkz is literally 5 minutes’ walk from the original venue, behind Angel Tube Station in Torrens St. The two bands will be joined by South Coast electro-punks MR STRANGE. On-the-door admission price is to be confirmed.
Chron Gen are also scheduled to play Ilfracombe Punk Festival on 18 November.
1919 are about to play a batch of German dates before returning to play Wharf Chambers, Leeds on 20 October.
Cult UK new wave power poppers THE FAVOURITES have a career-spanning vinyl compilation out next month.
New Feeling brings together both the Nottingham band’s highly sought-after singles plus b-sides and ten other never-officially-released tracks.
The release is being trailed by a slideshow video for the track ‘One Of Those Dreams’ premiered here.
Fronted by future POGUES bassist Darryl Hunt, The Favourites were formed out of the remnants of legendary Stiff Records-signed pub-rockers PLUMMET AIRLINES in 1977. Touring the UK as support to the likes of THE ONLY ONES, THE RICH KIDS, THE VIBRATORS and SQUEEZE, they released two singles in 1979 – covers of ABBA’s ‘SOS’ and London punks THE WASPS ‘Angelica’ – before splitting.
While Hunt would find fame by replacing Cait O’Riordan in The Pogues, guitarist Duncan Kerr and drummer Keith Gotheridge would later fetch up in doo-wop hitmakers DARTS. Bassist Kevin Green and guitarist Tony Berrington, meanwhile, teamed up in rockabillies THE DEADBEATS, releasing the classic Vic Maile-produced On Tar Beach album for New Rose – recently reissued through Ace Records.
Fully digitally remastered by Sean Read of DEXYS, New Feeling is set for release on vinyl (with a free CD of the album) through Reckless Records on 29 September. Willy Wonka-style, a very limited number will include original copies of the super-rare Nick Tauber-produced ‘Angelica’ single!
The album is available to buy in person ahead of the release date at the Reckless shop in London’s Berwick Street.
A download version of the album is available to pre-order now through Bandcamp.
As they gear up for their 40th Anniversary tour, PENETRATION are set to release not one but TWO limited edition 7″ singles!
As previously announced, the County Durham legends play a dozen dates in October and November, including a show at London’s Islington Academy. The tour follows on from the release of their highly acclaimed comeback album Resolution in 2015.
The first of the singles features newly recorded versions of three songs – ‘In The Future’, ‘Race Against Time’ and ‘Duty Free Technology’ – that were originally demoed by the ban back in 1976. It will be available on purple vinyl.
The second single will feature two cover versions that the band recorded during the sessions for Resolution – the FLAMIN’ GROOVIES classic ‘Shake Some Action’ and, in a nod to current drummer John Maher, BUZZCOCKS’ ‘I Don’t Mind’. This one will be pressed on gold vinyl. Both singles will be available in a full colour picture bag and limited to 500 copies.
The singles are both available to pre-order via the band’s Pledge page, along with various other unique items including signed test pressings of each single, handwritten and signed 40th Anniversary tour setlists and lyric sheets, an exclusive T-Shirt design and signed and personalised prints of this iconic photo of Pauline Murray by legendary photographer Rik Walton…

The infamous SEX PISTOLS interview album Some Product is to be reissued in expanded form.
The album, a collage of various interviews with band members interspersed with radio ads, was originally released in August 1979. It featured an edited version of the legendary Bill Grundy interview, plus reflections on her son by John Lydon’s mother.
The new version, cunningly retitled More Product, sees it expanded to 3 discs, with the inclusion of a rare BBC Radio 1 Rock On interview from 1977, plus previously unreleased interviews from Edinburgh’s Radio Forth and Newcastle’s Radio Metro from the same year.
It’s available now through UMC.

The quartet from Phoenix and L.A. tore the roof off The Finsbury in London at the start of their first Euro-trek back in May.
The band now score a double top with a first single – ‘The Cat’s Meow’ – from their debut album for Dirty Water Records, Me. Ow.
The album was recorded with Arizona producer Bob Hoag at Flying Blanket Recording, and noted L.A. punk figure Paul Roessler at Kitten Robot Studio. The single was co-written by legendary Underground Garage DJ, John Carlucci.
The band hit the road across the US throughout the Autumn, touring with THE LIVING END, THE JACKETS and ESCOBAR, culminating in a very special Dirty Water Club night at the Valley Bar in Phoenix.

North London rockers TEN BENSON are to play a rare hometown gig this weekend when they headline the Clerkenwell Festival.

Formed in 1997 with six albums to their credit, Ten Benson have been quiet of late, their most recent release being 2015’s ‘Mud Man’ single.

Sussex folk-punks MATILDA’S SCOUNDRELS have a new video which they’re premiering exclusively with Vive Le Rock!
‘Bow To The Powers’ is the first single to be released from the band’s debut album As The Tide Turns, out next month through TNS Records. The video is by legendary filmmaker Mark Richards.
Formed in 2014, the six-piece have been building a solid reputation, touring up and down the country with the likes of THE LEVELLERS, FEROCIOUS DOG and THE MAHONES, as well as appearing at this year’s Rebellion and Boomtown Fair.
The band say, “As The Tide Turns has been a labour of love for all of us as a band for over 8 months from initially recording it to getting it all finished and we couldn’t be happier with what we managed to achieve. This album offers a few party tunes to get you in the mood for drinking with your mates but it also offers so much more with us having written about our experiences in the Calais Jungle through to protest songs inspired by people marching against all manner of issues to the massive injustices being experienced the world over by privatised penal systems and so much more. It’s an album we feel is about the times we live in right now and about the opportunity to change the direction that all this crazy shit is going into a positive future which is what inspired the album name which itself we felt was the feel of the album from the songs we have written for it over the last 2 years. We hope you all enjoy it as much as we did writing it all and we can’t wait for you all to hear it!”
Set for release on Friday 8 September it’s available to pre-order on vinyl and CD here and digitally here.

Much-missed indie rockers SUMMERHILL return for a 30th Anniversary Tour next month.
The dates, which will culminate in a show at London’s Borderline, will also coincide with an expanded reissue of the band’s hard-to-find debut album Lowdown.
Rising from the ashes of Stiff Records-signed Glasgow roots-rockers THE SNAKES OF SHAKE, and fronted by that band’s songwriter Seori Burnett, Summerhill brought together guitarist Neil Scott, who’d served time with FELT and INDIANS IN MOSCOW, and drummer Iain Shedden from THE SAINTS and legendary Wishaw new wavers THE JOLT. The classic line-up was completed by bassist Keith Gilles, who currently also plays with the reformed UK82 punks OMEGA TRIBE.
Falling in with the mid-80s Cowpunk and Paisley Underground scenes, combining country twang with psychedelic exploration, Summerhill were the go-to support band for numerous visiting US acts, including GREEN ON RED and THE BEAT FARMERS. They released their debut 8-track mini-LP through Demon in 1988 before signing to Polydor for the full-length West Of Here in 1990.
Speaking of the band reunion, Burnett says, “I was always inclined to say ‘never’. Why revisit the past? We should always face forward, look to the future. But here we are…Summerhill about to tour on the back of a re-release of our debut album. I’ve come to realise that our past is as important and just as much a part of us as our future. For one particular year – 1988 – we experienced such emotional intensity chasing our dreams. Now we’re all ready to drink from that well of energy again, recapture a moment, take care of unfinished business and maybe something new and just as exciting will emerge.”
The new reissue of Lowdown, out through Neon Tetra on 15 September, also features the band’s 4-track debut EP I Want You, plus a second disc of previously unreleased material.
Full tour dates are….
16 Sept – The Hug and Pint, Glasgow (w/ Nutmeg City Group) tickets

22 Sept – The Borderline, London (w/ Michele Stodart & Band Of Hope) tickets
Rejuvenated psych-punks THE BRAINIAC 5 return next month with a new album, just months after the last one.
We’re Ready! follows on from the acclaimed Journey To X, which was released in January. It’s the last album to feature original bassist John ‘Woody’ Wood, who’s since been replaced by Wayne Worrell.
First coming together in the mid-70s on the Cornish free festival circuit, The Brainiac 5 relocated to London where they joined the post-punk psych scene alongside bands like THE SOFT BOYS, THE BARRACUDAS and INNER CITY UNIT, recording their debut album with HAWKWIND’s Martin Griffin and counting the likes of Alex Chilton and John Peel among their fans. They reformed in 2012.
The band’s fourth album, We’re Ready! is set for release through Reckless Records on 29 September, preceded by a special launch show at The Gunners, Blackstock Road, London on Saturday 2 September, where fans will have the opportunity to buy the album ahead of release.
They’ll be joined at the gig by THE GREEN RAY, who also issue a new album, Half Sentences, through Reckless on the 29th. Originally formed by Ken Whaley and Richard Treece from legendary freak-rockers HELP YOURSELF, this is their first new album since their deaths in 2013 and 2015 respectively.
Alt-goth guitarist and songwriter CHELSEA WOLFE has unveiled a new video as a taster for her forthcoming album.
’16 Psyche’ is taken from Wolfe’s sixth album Hiss Spun, which follows on from 2015’s Abyss and will be released through Sargent House on 22 September. The album and video feature a guest appearance from guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen of QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE.
Hiss Spun was recorded in Salem, Massachusetts at the studio of CONVERGE guitarist Kurt Ballou, who produced the album. “I wanted to write some sort of escapist music; songs that were just about being in your body, and getting free,” Wolfe says. “You’re just bombarded with constant bad news, people getting fucked over and killed for shitty reasons or for no reason at all, and it seems like the world has been in tears for months, and then you remember it’s been fucked for a long time, it’s been fucked since the beginning. It’s overwhelming and I have to write about it.”
Hiss Spun is available to pre-order in various bundles here.
GINGER WILDHEART has confirmed that he’s up for touring with his band MUTATION this autumn, despite his ongoing hospitalisation for mental health issues.
The dates, which are set to take place at the end of October and beginning of November, are in support of the trio’s recently released album Mutation III: Dark Black, which is out now on undergroove.
Says Ginger, “I am fully committed to the Mutation tour in October, and all other Mutation activity to come. I consider this music a catharsis, a way of channeling the aggression and desperation that I’m currently experiencing.
These shows will act as essential therapy in keeping me focused and providing a goal to strive for in my mental health well-being. I’m maintaining my fitness and keeping my eye on the prize. When I say that we will rid ourselves of our demons on every date of this tour in mean it 100 per cent. This will not be a drill.”
An outlet for some of Ginger’s heaviest material, Mutation first came about in 2012 and see the guitarist/vocalist joined by co-writer Scott Lee Andrews (Exit_International) and drummer Denzel (Vennart/ Young Legionnaire). Fiull dates are below….
October 27 Leeds Brudenell Social Club
October 29 Manchester Deaf Institute
October 30 Glasgow Stereo
October 31 Newcastle Riverside
November 1 London Underworld
November 2 Cardiff The Globe
November 3 Brighton Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar
November 4 Damnation Festival
BRUCE FOXTON & RUSSELL HASTINGS alias FROM THE JAM have announced the release a new live album.
The fittingly-titled From The Jam Live! mark 10 years since they began life as an essentially live entity, celebrating the classic back catalogue of the Woking legends. Since then they’ve toured relentlessly, both internationally and on their home turf, where they’ve clocked up nearly 200 headline shows.
Hastings “felt it [was] time to release a live album as it’s been 10 years since the live DVD A First Class Return was filmed at The Forum, Kentish Town. We’ve toured most countries now over the years but you can’t beat a sold out British crowd to play to!”
Foxton adds, “We often reflect on our most memorable shows and the new live album will encapsulate these, illustrating the very best of the band’s live performance, where the band and crowd were at one with each other, creating an exhilarating power packed set that still echoes around these venues to this day.”
Full tracklisting is….
1. In The City
2. This Is The Modern World
3. Down In Tube The Station At Midnight
4. The Butterfly Collector
5. Smithers Jones
6. That’s Entertainment
8. Saturday’s Kids

If you caught legendary UK SUBS bassist ALVIN GIBBS at Rebellion talking about his extraordinary time on the road with IGGY POP but didn’t manage to pick up a copy of his book, fear not! You can buy it exclusively from our own Vive Le Shop!
Published by our new book company Extradition Book, Some Weird Sin – On Tour With Iggy Pop chronicles 230 nights touring across six continents on tour with the Godfather of Punk. The book vividly unveils a touring realm of drugs, alcohol reliance, Iggy’s tense encounter with Bowie backstage in NYC and single-handedly taking on Pepsi Cola Corp in the Antipodes. Discover also the decadent happenings at a Guns N’ Roses hotel room party in Texas and the cocaine-fuelled craziness that ensued after a triumphal show in Miami.
After splitting from the UK Subs, Gibbs was living in Los Angeles in 1988 when he received a ‘phone call from his friend, ex-Hanoi Rocks’ guitarist Andy McCoy. McCoy had just joined Iggy Pop’s touring band and needed to know if Gibbs was interested in the available bassist’s job. By eagerly answering, ‘Yes’, Alvin initiated a musical association with Iggy that entailed sharing the stage with him for a nonstop eight-month long tour taking in every major city across six continents!
Follow Iggy around the globe as Some Weird Sin – On Tour With Iggy Pop candidly reveals the relentless travel schedules, illicit pleasures and satisfying stage triumphs of being in a band with the man who by general acclaim is considered to be the indisputable godfather of punk. It was an extraordinary ride.
THE BAND OF HOLY JOY headline a night of post-punk in London next month.
The show, at The Lexington on 17 September, also features sets from ex-FALL guitarist Martin Bramah’s BLUE ORCHIDS and Teddington’s VIC GODARD alumni and Peel Favourites, THE BITTER SPRINGS. Tickets for the show are available here.
The gig follows on from BOHJ’s stunning performance with THE DOCTORS OF MADNESS at the same venue in the spring, and ahead of the release of their new album in October.
Funambulist We Love You, the band’s 18th studio album, is described as a “… literary examination of the malaise set forth by Brexit, Trump, the rise of the far-right and a general disenfranchisement from most post-war liberal values. It rarely names any names, and it’s far from strident, but it’s undeniably a record forged by 2017. (And you don’t need to look it up – a funambulist is a tightrope walker – even we’re not sure if that’s a metaphor or simply an obtusely snappy title.)”
Funambulist We Love You is set for release by Tiny Global Productions on 27 October and is available to pre-order here.
Rising from the ashes of seminal Newcastle punks SPEED and fronted by charismatic vocalist and songwriter Johny Brown, BOHJ were formed out of the South London squat scene of the early 80s, releasing three albums on Flim Flam Records before signing to Rough Trade. Reaching their (first) commercial peak in the late 80s, the band split in ’93, only to return with a new line-up at the start of the new millennium.
Along the way, Brown has been involved in various media projects including theatre, film and radio, with the band continuing to host their weekly Bad Punk show on Resonance FM.
The Clouds The Break The Sky, a 3 x CD compilation of the band’s Flim Flam recordings, is set for release on 25 August through Rough Trade and is available to pre-order here.
Fast-rising young electro-rockers MONNA VANNA follow their just-released debut EP with a series of dates.
The five-track Art Is Dead – featuring the single ‘Throw Me Away’ – is available to download now through Bandcamp and iTunes, and on CD at gigs.
With a sound rooted in primitive electronica, fronted by Cam Bradbury’s soaring, cinematic vocal, the Leeds-based duo call to mind the earliest outings by SOFT CELL and others from the Yorkshire soldering-iron scene. The coruscating FX-laden post-punk guitar of Dan Knights adds a whole other sonic dimension. Aural images of early-80s electronica are underlined by Bradbury’s occasional melodica, reminiscent of both NEW ORDER and a pre-THE THE Matt Johnson.
Definitely a band on the up, catch them on the road at….
26 Aug – Queen St Brewhouse, Colchester
27 Aug – Hertford Festival, Hertford
