Aussie rock legends RADIO BIRDMAN are to have their amazing story told in a new documentary film. You can watch the trailer here….
Inspired by the Detroit sounds of THE STOOGES and THE MC5, took Sydney by storm when they formed in 1974, going on to make two albums before splitting during a UK tour in ’78. Becoming a huge influence on Aussie punk and rock during the 80s and 90s, they reformed in the late 90s and have remained active since, even releasing a new album Zeno Beach in 2006, and visiting the UK several times.
Filmed and directed by Jonathan J Sequeira, Descent Into The Maelstrom tells the story of the band and the scene they created around their Funhouse club, with help from all the original members plus various Oz rock luminaries.
Says Sequeira, “Descent Into The Maelstrom isn’t just the story of Radio Birdman, it’s the story of a scene, a movement, in Australia, started by the band. It’s about doing your music, and your art without compromise, when everyone tries to shut you down. Radio Birdman inspired the outsiders in Australian society to do their own thing. Like the band, the film is a completely independent production – the band’s take no-prisoners attitude fed into the making of it. The intensity of the music and the individuals is still there, coming off the screen, and it insists that you too settle for nothing less than the best.”
The film’s cinematic release has yet to be confirmed, but it will be preceded by the release of a soundtrack album featuring Birdman classics as well as their precursors THE RATS and TV JONES, contemporaries THE SAINTS, homegrown influences THE MASTERS APPRENTICES and THE EASYBEATS plus THE RAMONES, FLAMIN’ GROOVIES and RICHARD HELL.
Descent Into The Maelstrom – Funhouse Jukebox Soundtrack is set for release on 9 June on vinyl with free download. It’s available to pre-order here.
Legendary HANOI ROCKS frontman MICHAEL MONROE has his first career-spanning compilation out next month.
Simply titled The Best, the 29-track double disc set brings together key tracks from Michael’s 30-year post-Hanoi career, plus a selection of rarities and previously unreleased songs.
As well as tracks from his solo albums, the comp includes four songs from the Little Steven-produced Demolition 23 album, unavailable for more than 20 years. There are also two outtakes from 2015’s Blackout States album plus the brand new single ‘One Foot Outta The Grave’.
“There’s a couple of extra special tracks,” says Michael. “Like ‘It’s A Lie’, sung as a duet with Stiv Bators (Dead Boys, Lords Of The New Church) back in 1985, and a never-before-released second version of the Steppenwolf cover ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ featuring Slash, left over from the Coneheads soundtrack project that Slash did with me in 1993. And since Slash has the biggest heart of gold in Rock‘n’Roll, he was kind enough to allow me to use it on this album. God bless him!”
The Best is released through Spinefarm on 9 June. It’s available to pre-order here.
In the run-up to the release of their new album, RANCID have unveiled another new video.
The autobiographical, political anthem ‘Telegraph Avenue’ is taken from Trouble Maker, the band’s ninth album which is released through Hellcat/Epitaph on Friday 9 June. It’s available to pre-order here.
As previously announced, Rancid will be joining GREEN DAY on their dates around the UK and Ireland….
6/28/17 Belfast, Ormeau Park
6/29/17 Dublin, Royal Hospital Kilmainham
7/1/17 London, Hyde Park
7/3/17 Sheffield Arena
7/4/17 Glasgow, Bellahouston Park

Hot new Brighton psych-rockers CLEVER THING have a new single out and they’re premiering the video exclusively with Vive Le Rock!
The lurching, primal ‘Fixer Upper’ follows on from last year’s ‘In A Tissy’. Released through Be Pacific Records, it’s available now through iTunes.
Bringing together Rich Fownes of BAD FOR LAZARUS and THE EIGHTIES MATCHBOX B-LINE DISASTER and Daisy Coburn of PINK LIZARDS, Clever Thing are completed by bassist Charlie Buttons and drummer James Drohan.
Fort Wayne’s finest, LEFT LANE CRUISER return with a brand new album next week and they’re premiering a track exclusively with Vive Le Rock!
In fact, ‘Liquor Store’ is so exclusive, you’ll only find it on the CD version of Claw Machine Wizard and not on the vinyl or digital versions.
After sporting a three-piece line-up on 2015’s Dirty Spliff Blues, band founder Freddy J Evans IV has returned Left Lane Cruiser to a duo format for Claw Machine Wizard, retaining the services of drummer Pete Dio. Having said that, sonically seaking, they’re still pushing forward….
“There’s still a lot of signature LLC gut-bucket blues on the new record,” Freddy explains, “but we’re constantly trying to expand the sound. I’ve always kept our foundation in blues and classic rock, but after a decade of making albums, eventually new flavors creep in. On the road we listen to a lot of James Brown, Funkadelic, Parliament, Charles Bradley and other soulful artists. Also been jammin’ MF Doom’s Special Herbs, which are his instrumental tracks. Those kinds of sounds had a big influence on this record. I think in general this record is a huge departure from the previous LLC albums. We kinda refer to it as our soul record. There’s a lot of different flavors on this one.”
Speaking of influences, the artwork for Claw Machine Wizard takes its lead from the iconic sleeve designs of the MC5’s Back In The USA and DR FEELGOOD’s Down By The Jetty.
Talking about ‘Liquor Store’, Freddy says, “This a tune about partying on the road and how much trouble it brings us with our ladies back home. My wife is my goddess, my queen, my moon and stars, but she keeps a tight leash on me when it comes to partying. And when you play rock’n’roll, partying is your business, and business is good.”
Set for release on 19 May through Alive Naturalsound, Claw Machine Wizard is available to pre-order here.
THE MEKONS celebrate their 40th Anniversary with their own festival this summer.
Set in rural Suffolk, Mekonville will bring together, for the first time ever, the current and original line-ups of the band.
Taking place from 28 to 29 July in the village of Pettaugh between Ipswich and Stowmarket, the festival will also feature BONNIE PRINCE BILLY, TILLY MOSES, CHRIS MILLS, ESPER SCOUT, CALVA LOUISE, LES TRIABOLIQUES, JON LANGFORD & HIS MEN OF GWENT, THE HILL BANDITS THE 4DGS, INTERROBANG, ETON CROP, LITTLE SPARTA, SALLY TIMMS and more.
The weekend also promises DJs, spoken word and poetry, comedy, arts and crafts and local food and drink.
Mekons founder Andy Corrigan says, “Mekonville will be more than a celebration of a band. We will be creating a family-friendly celebration of the enthusiastic immersion in all art forms which took a bunch of teenage art students from painting, to film-making, to performance art, to recording John Peel sessions.”
Jon Langford adds, “As teenage art students we formed a band. Who’d have thought we would have still been going all these years later? Mekonville will feature every element of the performing arts we can cram into a weekend.”
Staged in collaboration with PettaFiesta, tickets for Mekonville can be bought here.
