CUBANATE GET BRUTAL!

UK techno-rockers CUBANATE herald a new compilation album with a pair of live dates this month.

The 14-track Brutalism covers the band’s first four years, drawing on their first three albums Antimatter, Cyberia and Barbarossa, and features remastered versions of singles such as ‘Oxyacetylene’, ‘Body Burn’ and ‘Joy’.

Check out ‘Body Burn’.

Due for release on 5 May, Brutalism is available to pre-order here.

Formed in London in 1992 around a nucleus of vocalist Marc Heal and guitarist Phil Barry, later joined by NITZER EBB drummer Julian Beeston. Fusing techno beats with rock guitar, they supported the likes of SISTERS OF MERCY, GARY NUMAN and FRONT 242. Splitting in 200, they reformed last year for Chicago’s Cold Waves festival.

Speaking about Brutalism, Heal says, “Listening back to these old tracks and hearing them remastered I’m pleased and surprised how fresh they sound. We had so little time to record them, it was all done on the fly. These days, with EDM now big corporate business, it’s easy to forget how wild and anarchic that early techno scene was. Anything went. One thing to remember was that it was only ten or twelve years after punk. If you had been a 16-year-old punk in 1978, you were still barely in your late 20’s when all these mad raves were happening so a lot of people who were a bit older in the scene were people who had been punks and still carried that spirit.”

The gigs in Glasgow and London represent their first UK shows since 1999. Catch them at….

28 April – Saint Luke’s, GLASGOW
30 April – O2 Academy Islington, LONDON

Support comes from EMPIRION, KANGA, JE$US LOVES AMERIKA and (in London only) CEASE2XIST.

Tickets are available here.

CURSE OF LONO PLAY SPECIAL LONDON SHOW!

London band CURSE OF LONO have released a trailer for their brand new album out today, which they’re sharing exclusively with Vive Le Rock!

The trailer also serves as a taster for a short film Saturday Night: A Film Of Four Songs, directed by Alex Walker. The film recently won Best Music Video at the LA Independent Film Festival, the London Independent Film Awards and Feel The Reel International Film Festival in Glasgow and has made the official selection at the International Music Video Underground in LA.

The band are launching their debut album Severed with a special show at London’s Water Rats venue on Thursday 20 April. All proceeds from the gig will go to help much-loved London music figure Barry Marshall-Everitt in his fight against cancer. A key player on the London music scene since the late 60s, Barry has worked in pirate radio on the infamous Radio Geronimo, tour managed the likes of T REX and PINK FAIRIES and for many years ran Soho’s celebrated Borderline club during its heyday. Most recently, he’s been running the roots radio station House Of Mercy.

“Barry wrote one of the first articles about my old band for Music Week back in 2005,” says Curse Of Lono frontman Felix Bechtolsheimer. “He has played us on the radio, promoted our gigs at The Borderline and Dingwalls and, more importantly, he’s become a great friend. He has helped so many bands over the years, including many of our mates, so it seems only right to try to give a little back.”

Tickets for the gig are available here.

Severed is available now through the band’s website.

AT THE DRIVE IN REVEAL NEW VIDEO!

Reconvened West Texans AT THE DRIVE IN have just released a brand new video.

The band’s first video in years, ‘Hostage Stamps’ is the third single to be taken from their comeback album in • ter a • li • a.

Using a mix of stop-motion as well as digital animation, the video was directed by Rob Shaw and Damon Locks, who also designed the characters and set.

Cedric Bixler-Zavala describes the song as, “like walking through the hallway in some war-torn ghetto and reading the writing on the wall. When you hear things like, ‘Raise your nithing pole,’ I don’t think anyone will know what that is right away, but when you look it up, it’s this curse. We are going to be victorious. Here’s the fucking head on the stake in front of our army. We’re coming back. It’s reading the writing on the wall. It’s going and keeping your ear to the ground and listening to the heartbeat of young people.”

The album is due for release on 5 May through Rise Records. It’s available to pre-order now through the band’s website.

At The Drive In play the Reading and Leeds Festivals at the end of August.

Now in its 19th year, Punk Rock Bowling returns to Las Vegas with an all-star punk-rock bill.

Taking place from 27 to 29 May the downtown outdoor festival features sets from IGGY POP, BAD RELIGION, COCK SPARRER, ME FIRST & THE GIMME GIMMES, PENNYWISE, FIDLAR, DISCHARGE, THE ADICTS, BOUNCING SOULS, OFF!, THE INTERRUPTERS, THE DICKIES, BOOZE & GLORY and more….

Kicking off on 26 May, there are also individual late night club shows from TELEVISION, THE SONICS, GIUDA, RIVERBOAT GAMBLERS, SCREAM, THE VANDALS, MUNICIPAL WASTE and loads more….

Full details and tickets are available here.

Me First this week release a career-spanning retrospective Rake It In: The Greatest Hits, compiling all their favourite songs on one record. Set for release on Friday 7 April, if you pre-order the digital album from iTunes or Bandcamp, you’ll immediately get an instant download of ‘City Of New Orleans’. It will also be available from the Fat Wreck webstore. Read our Q&A with Spike below….

So how was your recent U.K tour? What do you like most about coming to the U.K?

I enjoy watching the final stages of the UK’s transformation from far-reaching, iron-fisted empire to a cultural and economic backwater. I’d like to think that American reality TV culture had something to do with it. You’re welcome.

Playing Punk Rock Bowling must be a lot different to the usual theatre and club shows. What have you got planned for PRB?

Steady as she goes. When you’ve got a winning formula (hit songs, great outfits, scintillating onstage banter, matching guitars…), you stay the course. Our plans for after the set is to watch the master (Iggy) at work. I am also planning to don a quinceañera dress and a cowboy hat, and recite my poetry through a bullhorn on Fremont St. You might want to miss that.

You have covered quite a few big stars who have played Vegas. Any special songs coming up in the set?

Every song that we lovingly render is special in its own unique way. Everytime we play one it’s like we’re hearing it for the first time, whether we’re in Vegas, or Reno.

Are Me First gambling kind of guys?

Everytime we mount a stage, we gamble with the prospect that we’ll be laughed out of town. So far, the only place that’s happened was in Pittsburgh.

This will be our first time in Las Vegas. What would you recommend we check out?

The Liberace Museum. East Fremont St is still kinda seedy. Thrift stores (people lose all their money, and sell everything they own).

What 3 essential things will you be taking to Punk Rock Bowling and Las Vegas?

Energy, passion, and intensity (maybe a humidifier).

Here’s Me First performing at PRB in 2015.
