Skanking outta West London’s Ladbroke Grove, dub-punks SMILEY & THE UNDERCLASS pave the way for their debut album with a new video, and they’re launching it exclusively with Vive Le Rock!

‘It’s All England’ is the opening cut from Rebels Out There, which the Ladbroke Grove band recorded at the studio of Mick Jones of THE CLASH. It was produced by legendary DJ, remixer and sound system guru Nick Manasseh.

Says Smiley, “I remember listening to ‘Taxman’ by The Beatles and wondering who Mr Wilson and Mr Heath were. It’s the same with talking about David Cameron, Theresa May or even Trump. The themes are there and are pretty obvious for anyone who’s willing to listen: environmental apocalypse, inequality, the death of reason and the rise of bullshit. The weird thing was that we wrote the album before the Brexit vote and the US elections. We were singing about building walls and making truth long before these arseholes came and turned reality on it’s head.”

Alongside Smiley on rhythm guitar and vocals, the Underclass are Jay Hirano (drums), Ryan Windross (bass) and James Shephard (lead guitar).

Set for release on 14 July through their own Bredda Records, Rebels Out There is available to pre-order on CD and download here.

Smiley & The Underclass have a summer of dates ahead, including performances at Bearded Theory and Glastonbury. Catch them on the road at….

12 May – New Cross Inn, London
26 May – Bearded Theory Festival, Walton On Trent
2 Jun – Mau Mau Bar, London
24 Jun – Hootananny, Brixton, London

First released through Volcom in 2012, the EP has been revamped with ‘Sell The Truth’ and ‘2X2’ for UK release through Dirty Water Records.

Formed in high-school in Boston, nurturing and obsession with KISS and MOTLEY CRUE, the band relocated the New York where, taking the lead of new heroes THE DICTATORS and RAMONES, they fused their buzzsaw punk with classic girl group pop finesse.

Releasing their second album Full Tramp two years ago through Slovenly, they return to the UK in September to play Liverpool Psych Fest. Look out for more shows around that time.

The appropriately-titled First EP Plus Two Xtra Songs is set for release on 12 May. You can pre-order it here.

Legendary DEAD BOYS and LORDS OF THE NEW CHURCH frontman STIV BATORS is set to be immortalised on celluloid in a new documentary film.

STIV: The Life And Times Of A Dead Boy is being made by director Danny Garcia, the man responsible for such films as The Rise and Fall Of The Clash, Looking For Johnny, and Sad Vacation: The Last Days Of Sid and Nancy.

Emerging from the Cleveland, Ohio scene and relocating to New York City with The Dead Boys, Stiv fronted the band through two classic albums and the anthemic ‘Sonic Reducer’ single before heading to the UK to team up with the remains of SHAM 69 in THE WANDERERS. He subsequently found success alongside DAMNED guitarist Brian James in The Lords Of The New Church throughout the 80s. Stiv died in Paris in 1990 after being hit by a taxi.

Watch a trailer for the film here.

An IndieGoGo page has been set up to help fund the film.

Long lost Birmingham garage punks T.V. EYE finally see their debut album released this month.

The teenage quintet formed in 1976 around Moseley Art School, featuring a line-up of Andy Wickett, Dave Kusworth, Eamon Duffy, Paul Adams and Dave Twist.  Inspired, naturally, by the Stooges, they burned brightly but all too briefly, leaving behind a smattering of recorded evidence.

Wickett would go on to briefly front a fledgling Duran Duran, taking with him various songs, including the classic ‘Stevie’s Radio Station’, which would eventually morph into ‘Rio’, becoming a massive hit in the process.

Kusworth would of course hook up with Nikki Sudden in The Jacobites and Duffy would join legendary Second City punks, The Prefects and the first line-up of The Nightingales, while Twist now occupies the drumstool in grease-rock power trio Black Bombers.

The Lost Studio Recordings 1977-1978 includes five studio tracks, plus six from a rehearsal session, preserved for generations by fellow scenester and Duran alumni, Stephen Duffy.

Available as a 300 copy limited edition red vinyl LP on Seventeen Records through Easy Action, it’s available to pre-order here. A CD version is also planned.

Eco-friendly psych-rockers THE MOTHERS EARTH EXPERIMENT unleash their debut single on Record Store Day.

The six-piece Birmingham band have been together for two years, and in that time have supported the likes of GONG, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE, ARTHUR BROWN, NIK TURNER’S SPACE RITUAL and PURSON as well as appearing on the main stage at last year’s Lunar Festival.

Signed to Birmingham institution Swordfish Records – also responsible releases by GODFLESH, DAVE KUSWORTH and ROKY ERICKSON – the band’s debut single, the enviroskeptic-frustrating ‘Cool Down Mama’, is released on Saturday 22 April as a limited edition 7″.

The band’s self-titled debut album is set for release on Friday 19 May on CD and limited edition multicoloured gatefold vinyl. It’s available to pre-order now through Amazon.

The Mothers Earth Experiment play The Borderline, London on Wednesday 10 May as support to GOLDRAY. Get your tickets here.

Watford mod-rockers THE SPITFIRES have a new single out next month, and a pair of headline dates to coincide.

‘Move On’ is the band’s first new material since their acclaimed second album A Thousand Times last August, and was written and recorded during an intense four day period at the end of the year.

Band frontman Billy Sullivan, speaking about the song, says, “It shows a change in direction musically and lyrically. It’s a pop song, taking influences from reggae and dub but bringing it into 2017.  I don’t think we could or would have set out to recreate that music. We just interpret the space and rhythm into our own sound. Do our own version if you like. I also think it’s a positive statement: move on from tired old views and show that we as people are better than that”.

Released on Friday 19th May on Catch 22 Records, ‘Move On’ is available on 7” blue coloured vinyl and digital download with exclusive B-Side ‘Stick To Your Guns’. The first 150 copies of the 7” will include a free newspaper – featuring unseen photos, lyrics and articles. It’s available to pre-order here.

The band support the release with two headline shows at the start of June. Catch them at….

2nd June – The Georgian Theatre, Stockton-on-Tees
10th June – 229, London

Ace Birmingham grease-rockers BLACK BOMBERS have covered T REX for Record Store Day. And they’re premiering the video exclusively with Vive Le Rock!

The original version of ‘Raw Ramp’ appeared on the B-side of T Rex’s ‘Get It On’ single in July ’71. The Bombers’ version, released by Easy Action on a 500-copy limited edition double A-side 7″, comes coupled with an exclusive new band original ‘Rush’.

Both sides feature vocal contributions from Rachel Mayfield, and were produced by the band and Paul Gray.

Releasing their debut album last spring to great acclaim, Black Bombers boast a CV that includes stints with such legendary Birmingham bands as THE PREFECTS and GUNFIRE DANCE, a well as JOHNNNY THUNDERS & THE HEARTBREAKERS guitarist Walter Lure and the current line-up of THE GODFATHERS.

Pre-punk children of the glam revolution, Bombers guitarist/vocalist Alan Byron was initiated into the electric boogie by his two older brothers, while drummer Dave Twist fondly recalls catching the Bolan / Damned package at Birmingham Odeon on the final T Rex tour in 1977.

Their cover and its accompanying video – featuring the band as a glitter-streaked undead in a collage by fine artist and videographer Poppy Twist – provide a dark, very Black Bombers, take on this year’s 40th Anniversary of Bolan’s death.

Fabled West London post-punks FOLK DEVILS have announced a series of UK dates in tandem with Manchester’s INCA BABIES.

Both bands impacted on the UK underground scene with their strident blues-fuelled post-punk, forming a homegrown assistant alongside the likes of THE BIRTHDAY PARTY, THE GUN CLUB and THE SCIENTISTS, recording numerous Peel Sessions and burning bright and fast.

Fronted by the charismatic Ian Lowery, formerly of Northeast punks THE WALL, Folk Devils were celebrated with a career overview – Beautiful Monsters (Singles & Demo Recordings 1984-86) – through Optic Nerve Recordings last year, accompanied by gigs in London and Preston, with singer Dave Hodgson of PARTING SHOTS in place of Lowery, who sadly died in 2001. The success of the release and gigs has galvanised the band into more action.

Says guitarist Kris Jozajtis: “Getting back together for live shows happened because of the release of Beautiful Monsters last September, and the collective need of the surviving Devils to mark that event by doing what we used to do best – playing the songs live. It certainly wasn’t about nostalgia, although there was always a sense of unfinished business after we called it a day in the 80s. Of course, we wanted to honour the memory and singular talent of Ian. Much of what he wrote is even more resonant now, as many critics realize. Finding Dave Hodgson, who knew Lowery and has a real connection with the material, was crucial to making the reunion work. However, we also wanted to see if we could rekindle the fire which had characterized the sound of the band. I guess audiences can judge whether we’ve succeeded in that for themselves. But the fact that we’re all investing time, energy and money in this project will tell you what we think.”

Watch a clip of Folk Devils in their mid-80s prime.

Inca Babies lo res

Fronted by singer, guitarist and songwriter Harry Stafford, in their initial run from ’82 to ’88, Inca Babies released four albums and six singles. Stafford convened a new line-up of the band in 2007 featuring GOLDBLADE drummer Rob Haynes and bassist Vince Hunt, formerly of A WITNESS. Since then they’ve toured Europe, Russia, America and India and releasing three albums, their most recent being The Stereo Plan in 2014.

L.A. powerpop lords PAUL COLLINS’ BEAT have two of their classic 80s EPs reissued this month, and they’re sharing a track with Vive Le Rock!

‘Always Got You On My Mind’ is taken from Long Time Gone / To Beat Or Not To Beat which is issued through Lolipop Records on 28 April.

Formed in 1979 by Paul Collins, former drummer of THE NERVES – of ‘Hanging On The Telephone’ fame – The Beat became Paul Collins’ Beat in the mid-80s, following a dispute that caused Dave Wakeling’s mob to be renamed The English Beat in the US. To show there were no hard feelings, both bands toured together in 2012.

To Beat Or Not To Beat, featuring current TELEVISION guitarist Jimmy Ripp and PATTI SMITH drummer Jay Dee Daugherty was originally released in 1983, followed two years later by Long Time Gone, produced in the UK by former MOTORHEAD and WARSAW PAKT drummer Lucas Fox.

Speaking of ‘Always Got You On My Mind’, Collins says, “Steve Huff and I were living full time in New York – up all night, sleep all day, that was our M.O. Hanging out all the cool clubs like Danceteria and Mud Club. We had been touring all over the area with Jay Dee Daugherty and Jimmy Ripp. We decided it might be a good idea to take it out of state and go back west. Jimmy couldn’t make it so we met up with guitar slinger Werner Fritzsching. He had done time with Hall & Oates and that was good enough for us! After one long tour out west we got back to NY and we really wanted to have one more cut to round out the EP To Beat or Not To Beat as it was being released in Europe, so we went back into the studio. This time we went to the Power Station to get that big time rock sound we wanted so badly. Back then everything had to have that big radio friendly sound. We came pretty close and you can hear the slick production sound on this recording, thankfully the song holds up and it still sounds good today. My favourite part is where Werner starts rocking out at the end, I always loved his guitar part on this song!”

Paul hits Europe on tour from May, including a UK show at a special Dirty Water Club night at The Finsbury, London on Saturday 13 May. Support comes from LUCY & THE RATS and SEE NO EVILS. Tickets priced £8.50 are available here. Full dates are….

ONLY ONES founder PETER PERRETT is finally set to release his debut solo album this summer. And he’s revealed a video for the title track as a taster.

How The West Was Won features 10 new songs recorded by Peter with his two sons Jamie and Peter Jr and was produced by legendary ROLLING STONES producer Chris Kimsey.

The songs on How The West Was Won examine complex emotional terrain and extreme human behaviour, shot through as always with wry self-analysis. In a sense the album is a Perrett family affair: there are love songs (‘An Epic Story’, ‘C Voyeurger’) from Peter to his wife of 47 years Zena. On ‘Something In My Brain’, Perrett discusses good choices, bad choices and ultimately the only choices that will guarantee survival. There are also songs where Perrett opens his curtains and stares out into a much-changed world (‘Man Of Extremes’, ‘Sweet Endeavour’).

Peter Perrett - How The West Was Won - Packshot-72 dpi

How The West Was Won is set for release on 30 June through Domino. It’s available to pre-order on limited edition gatefold coloured vinyl with a signed print here, and as a download here.

Having initially split the Only Ones in 1982, Peter barely touched a guitar until his 1996 album Woke Up Sticky with his band The One. More inaction followed has he battled with continuing addiction problems, until The Only Ones reformed in 2007. Although they played a series of Japanese dates without drummer Mike Kellie in 2014, Peter’s reluctance to continue with the band, and Kellie’s tragic death earlier this year would seem to have put paid to future Only Ones activity.
