The classic 1977 debut album by THE DAMNED is to get the deluxe reissue treatment next month.

The UK’s first ever punk album, Damned Damned Damned is being rereleased through BMG on Friday 17 February, almost 40 years to the day since it was first released by Stiff Records.

To celebrate, Vive Le Rock presents this video exclusive of Dave Vanian and Captain Sensible’s 40th Anniversary Q&A  last year at The British Library – and we’re giving you the chance to win a copy of the album on CD!

Recorded at the fabled Pathway Studios in Newington Green, North London, Damned Damned Damned has been fully remastered and is being released as part of BMG’s The Art Of The Album series, refocusing attention on the album as a format. It comes with new, comprehensive and extensively researched sleevenotes by noted punk writer John Ingham.

Talking of the album’s recording, Captain Sensible reflects, “Damned Damned Damned was almost ‘un-produced’ by our Stiff stablemate Nick Lowe, who managed to capture the energy of our live set spectacularly.  Nick was known as ‘Basher’ as there was no messing about. It’s fairly manic, but also tuneful and, listened to now, still sounds pretty fresh to my ears…. The guitars don’t sound nice – they’re a raw, fuzzed-out thrash – that’s punk rock.  Pathway was a rough and ready studio round the back of an Islington garage.  It was so dark and dingy in there – you had to be careful or you’d knock your beer over.  The sessions took two days, after which the tape was recycled for an Elvis Costello album so there’s no chance of a remix…  Not that you’d want one – it’s perfect!”

Available on vinyl, CD and download, you can pre-order it here.

The band are about to embark on an extensive World Tour, taking in Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, USA and Canada, but will return in time to headline Camden Rocks on 3 June.

Thanks to The Damned and BMG, Vive Le Rock has three CD copies of the album to give away. Just drop us an email to info@vivelerock.net with Damned Damned Damned in the subject box and the answer to the following question….

What other band were ‘mistakenly’ pictured on the original back cover of Damned Damned Damned?

Good luck!

BLOCKHEADS and WILKO JOHNSON bassist NORMAN WATT-ROY is being celebrated in a new exhibition in London next month.

The multi-media exhibition at the newly opened Cadiz Gallery in Deptford features sound, fine art, illustration and animation, studying movement, music and the sonic experience of being in close proximity of live, raw, rock and roll being produced.

Serving time in early-70s bands THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH and GLENCOE before joining Radio Caroline-endorsed jazz-funksters LOVING AWARENESS, soon to be recruited by IAN DURY as The Blockheads. The rest is history.

The exhibition features the work of Essex-based artist, Tad Blower and will serve as the launch for his retro-style Norman Watt-Roy Flicker Book. On display will be Tad’s supporting drawings, giant expressive paintings, and animations.

“This exhibition could be seen as an absurd piece of ‘fan art’ gone out of control,” says Tad. “It is really an honest and exciting response to a unique and interesting subject matter… going to live gigs, especially in small venues is quite bizarre, it’s as much about watching as it is listening… watching and absorbing as legends do their thing.”

Formatively a fine artist/painter, Tad has more recently moved into animation – creating artwork for Julien Temple’s Oil City Confidential and Richard England’s East End Babylon.  “I am really pleased with the flicker book,” he says. “It is pocket-sized work of art that records some of the umpteen facial expressions, body contortions and finger movements of Norman in concert.  When I was child I would spend hours flicking through flicker books, there is something really magical about them”.

The exhibition opens on Wednesday 1 February at the Cadiz Gallery, 13 Harmon Place, London SE8 3FE. Admission is FREE.

The Norman Watt-Roy Flicker Book is available to order now from our very own Vive Le Shop!

New York City blues contortionists BOSS HOG have finally announced the UK release of their new album.

Brood X, the band’s first new album in 17 years, will be released through Bronze Rat on 24 March. It’s available to pre-order here.

First formed in 1989 by Jon Spencer and his wife Cristina Martinez, Boss Hog went on hiatus in 2000, reconvening for occasional shows and festivals from 2008 onwards.  Explaining the lay-off, Martinez says, “There are different broods of cicadas emerging in cyclical periods, there are 13-year cicadas and 17-year cicadas. That’s what Boss Hog is like – we’re operating on our own cycle. We go underground for a number of years, re-emerge, make beautiful sounds, and then go away. That’s our cyclical life.”

New York has changed beyond recognition and there’s a buffoonish villain entering the White House, but Martinez’s towering vocals and vicious, hilarious, emboldening lyrics have never sounded so sharp, nor Boss Hog so timely.

“A lot of Cristina’s lyrics on this album resonate with me more deeply since the election,” nods Spencer. “They’re blues songs, protest songs.”

“The songs do feel oddly relevant now,” Cristina adds.

Brood X was recorded in the band’s Lower East Side basement and cut at Michigan’s Key Club Recording Company on the same Flickinger N32 Matrix console Sly Stone used for There’s A Riot Goin’ On.

Check out ‘Formula X’.

As previously announced, Boss Hog play Oslo in Hackney, London on 3 February. Tickets are available here.

New London ‘dirty sax punk’ band GUTTFULL launched their debut single and video on Friday, in celebration of the inauguration of the 45th President of the USA.

The band say, “The video is a message to Trump on his inauguration day, and represents GUTTFULL’s views, all our friends’ views, and probably most of London’s views (at least judging by the spontaneous authentic reactions of those who appear in the video), the London mayor, if not the country!”

Midlands soul-boys STONE FOUNDATION have announced the release of their fourth studio album, made with a little help from PAUL WELLER.

Street Rituals was produced by The Modfather, who also co-wrote two of the songs and provided guitar, piano and vocals, including a lead vocal on the new single, ‘Your Balloon Is Rising’. You can watch the video here.

Says Weller, “These are dark, dark times so I was glad to hear a positive voice and vibrations in the words and a joy in the music…what a pleasure and a privilege it was to work with these fellas… It’s their best songwriting to date, and I just hope people get to hear it because there are some great tunes and I like the message on the record. I like the social comment, because you have so little of that these days.”

Set for release through 100% Records on 31 March, Street Rituals is available to pre-order from the band’s website.

Vive Le Rock is saddened by news of the death yesterday of Lance D’Boyle aka Gary Lance Robins, original drummer of UK anarcho legends POISON GIRLS.

Pete Fender, son of Poison Girls’ frontwoman Vi Subversa and a member of RUBELLA BALLET, FATAL MICROBES and others, posted this statement on Facebook earlier today….

“For the last 26 years, Gary has been scratching a meagre living as an artist in a remote part of the Sierra Nevada, high up the mountains of rural Granada in Spain.

“In February last year, Gary’s life-long friend and soulmate Frances, Vi Subversa, passed away, leaving him devastated. Before she passed, Gary came over to England to see her for the last time, and during this visit he was the victim of a credit card snatch that left him in debt for thousands of pounds, and without any means of support apart from his basic pension and the proceeds of a few pieces of art. The credit bank have refused his case for compensation and in fact have charged substantial interest on the original amount.

“In light of this fact, we are launching this urgent appeal to raise funds for Gary’s funeral costs and to clear his debts. If you can, please head over to the Poison Girls downloads page where you are free to download whatever you like, and donate what you can. Thank you xx”

Following  its successful run at the New Art Gallery in Walsall last month, the Punk In Walsall: Life and Legacy photographic exhibition is now coming to Birmingham, where it will be on view from 16 January to 6 February at the Parkside Gallery in Birmingham City University.

The exhibition is a unique collection of specially commissioned portrait photographs and interviews with punks from Walsall, reflecting on what punk meant to them at the time, and still means to them decades later. The exhibition is open to all, entry is free, and visitors will be able to take a copy of the free newspaper produced as part of this project.

Project curator Steve Pottinger says, “I was very keen to record how punk changed people’s lives in places like Walsall, and I’m really proud of what we’ve created. The stories this project brings to life are wonderfully interesting and varied.”

The exhibition was made possible through a Sharing Heritage grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to Walsall Creative Factory, an organisation founded to develop and deliver exciting and dynamic arts and heritage projects and events with local communities, and to celebrate diversity and culture.

The Parkside Gallery is open 9am-7pm Mon-Fri, and 9-6pm on Saturdays.

London’s bourbon soaked Gypsy blues bop’n’stroll orchestra THE URBAN VOODOO MACHINE have unveiled a new video.

‘Fallen Brothers’ is a tribute to their band members Robb ‘The Kid’ Skipper & Nick Marsh who died in October 2014 and June 2015, aged 28 and 53 respectively.

About the song, singer/writer Paul-Ronney Angel said, “It’s about moving on as much as it’s about remembering them. It’s time to sing, dance and remember the good times!

We will sing and we will dance
We will drink and we will laugh
We will not forget the past
And our Fallen Brothers

We all miss them terribly of course, but as a band it was never a question of stopping as I’m certain they would have wanted us to carry on. Really hope they would have approved of this video as they’re both in it – it’s been emotional but also fun to go through hours of old footage with them in it!”

‘Fallen Brothers’ is taken from the band’s latest album Hellbound Hymns, which made number 21 in Vive Le Rock‘s Top 50 Albums of 2016. Vinyl and CDs are available to buy directly from the band’s website.
