THE SEX PISTOLS have a box set of live recordings from 1976 issued by Universal this summer.
The appropriately-titled Sex Pistols – Live ’76 compiles warts’n’all recordings from the band’s legendary shows over the course of the first summer of UK punk, across four CDs or vinyl LPs, as well as digital download.
The first disc features their 4 June gig from Manchester’s Lesser Free Trade Hall; the one that famously inspired Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto to form BUZZCOCKS, which was also witnessed by such local future luminaries as jOY DIVISION, MORRISSEY, MARK E SMITH and TONY WILSON.
Disc Two captures their ‘Midnight Special’ show at Islington’s Screen On The Green cinema on 29 August, where they were supported by Buzzcocks and THE CLASH.
Disc Three contains the Pistols’ gig on 17 September at Chelmsford Prison, the only one to be officially record, captured to quarter-inch tape by soundman Dave Goodman.
The final disc is given over to a recording of a show at the 76 Club, Burton-on-Trent that has previously circulated as a bootleg. The sets feature contemporary photographs plus an original facsimile Sex Pistols Glitterbest press kit from the era.
Set for release on 29 August, Sex Pistols – Live ’76 is available to pre-order on CD and LP now.
Long-serving U.S. punks DESCENDENTS have announced the release of their sixth album.
Hypercaffium Spazzinate sees them returning to Epitaph for the first time since 1996, having released previous album, 2004’s Cool To Be You, through Fat Wreck.
Begun in 2010 following an extend hiatus, with the band members now scattered across various states, the album took shape over three years of sending tracks back and forth, the protracted gestation period allowing for what the band believe is some of their sharpest songwriting yet.
“I think one of the things that’s kept us inspired over the years is having the music as an outlet for our frustrations,” says singer Milo Aukerman. “Having the freedom to completely blow my voice out every time I recorded was a very positive experience for me.” Personal catharsis was a prime motivator for drummer Bill Stevenson, who names “my relationship priorities and my own faulty psychology” as his top inspirations. “In a way, putting pen to paper and getting whatever you need to get out of you is the big accomplishment.”
Set for release on 29 July, Hypercaffium Spazzinate is available to pre-order here.

NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS are to release a new album on 9 September.
Skeleton Tree is the first new Cave album since 2013’s Push The Sky Away. It was begun at Brighton’s Retreat studios in 2014 and completed at La Frette studios outside Paris last autumn.
The album will be preceded by on 8 September by the global cinema screening of a feature film, One More Time With Feeling, directed by Andrew Dominik. The press release says of the film….
“Originally a performance based concept, One More Time With Feeling evolved into something much more significant as Dominik delved into the tragic backdrop of the writing and recording of the album. Interwoven throughout the Bad Seeds’ filmed performance of the new album are interviews and footage shot by Dominik, accompanied by Cave’s intermittent narration and improvised rumination.”
For details of participating cinemas and ticket sales, and to pre-order Skeleton Tree, go to Nick Cave’s website.
Much missed West London blues-punks FOLK DEVILS have their complete recorded works collected on a new compilation due in September.
The release, Beautiful Monsters: Singles and Demo Recordings 1984-86, does what it says on the tin, over the course of 18 newly remastered tracks, available on CD for the very first time. The compilation will also be available on limited edition double 180g vinyl. Set for release on 16 September, it’s available to pre-order now through Optic Nerve Records.
Taking their name from sociologist Stanley Cohen’s iconic book on youth cultures Folk Devils & Moral Panics, the band were formed in 1983 by former THE WALL and SKI PATROL frontman Ian Lowery, together with guitarist Kris Jozajtis, bassist Mark Whiteley and drummer Alan Cole. They burned brightly but briefly, releasing a handful of well-received singles and recording three Peel sessions, and gigging with the likes of THE GUN CLUB, THE FALL and NICK CAVE, before tensions exacerbated by drugs and alcohol caused them to splinter. Lowery went on to form KING BLANK and THE IAN LOWERY GROUP but sadly died in 2001, aged just 45.
Following on from a successful run of dates as support to STIFF LITTLE FINGERS earlier in the year, RICKY WARWICK and his band THE FIGHTING HEARTS have announced their first ever headlining tour.
Touring in support of the two albums released in February through Nuclear Blast – When Patsy Cline Was Crazy (And Guy Mitchell Sang The Blues) and Hearts on Trees – the ALMIGHTY and BLACK STAR RIDERS frontman is joined in the band by bassist Robbie Crane (Black Star Riders), guitarist Mark Gemini Thwaite (THE MISSION, PETER MURPHY) and drummer Gary Sullivan.
Supporting on the tour are rejuvenated Bristol punks VICE SQUAD. Ricky comments: “We can’t wait to get back out there and play a full length set and I am delighted that my old friends Vice Squad will be special guests. I’ve been a fan of Beki and the boys since their debut album No Cause For Concern. It’s gonna be a hell of an evening.”

RUMMAGE, a new supergroup featuring the combined abilities of Scottish musician Mark Mulholland and members of Sacramento alt-rockers JACKPOT, issue their debut album Somewhere Else this week.
Mulholland has an impressive CV, working his way round the globe with the bands TWO DOLLAR BASH and IMPURE THOUGHTS, as well as stints with such luminaries as CAPTAIN SENSIBLE and NIKKI SUDDEN, Craig Ward from dEUS and legendary Nigerian drummer TONY ALLEN.
Meanwhile, Jackpot’s Rusty Miller is an in-demand sideman, working with the likes of CHUCK PROPHET, CAKE and JASON LYTLE, also bringing guitarist James Finch Jr to the project.
The trio first met at various stages along the road, including SXSW in Austin, Texas and a long threatened album was recorded during 2014 when their paths crossed once more in Marin County, California.
Somewhere Else is available now through Cannery Row Records on CD and on download from iTunes and their own Bandcamp page.
Long lost pub-rock progenitors EGGS OVER EASY have their complete works reissued later this month. And to get you in the mood, they’re premiering a fascinating mini-documentary exclusively with Vive Le Rock!
This little-known New York band arrived in the London in late 1970 to record with former ANIMALS bassist and JIMI HENDRIX manager Chas Chandler at Olympic Studios. The following year, with the album in the can but a promised record deal evaporating, the struggling band went down to their local boozer, The Tally Ho in Kentish Town (don’t look for it – it’s not there anymore), and blagged a gig.
At a time when live music in pubs was generally limited to jazz, this was a novel approach which appealed to future Stiff Records supremo Dave Robinson and his managerial charges BRINSLEY SCHWARZ, featuring a young Nick Lowe, and before long, many more pub venues had come on-stream.
Thus pub-rock was born: a no frills cheap’n’cheerful approach to gigging, a reaction to the overblown prog and glam of the day, taking live music out of the Earls Courts and Olympias and giving it back to the people. Opening doors for the likes of DR FEELGOOD, IAN DURY, JOE STRUMMER, EDDIE & THE HOT RODS, GRAHAM PARKER, ELVIS COSTELLO, THE STRANGLERS, THE VIBRATORS and more, the scene arguably paved the way for punk.
Good’n’Cheap: The Eggs Over Easy Story features their eventual Link Wray-produced 1972 debut album for A&M, the hard-to-find 1980 follow-up Fear Of Frying and, for the first time ever, those original previously unreleased Olympic sessions. Scheduled for release on 24 June through Yep Roc, it’s available to pre-order on double CD, triple vinyl and download.
