Probably best known for stints with GILLAN and OZZY OSBOURNE, Torme previously released a single and EP on Jet Records fronting his own punk band, touring with GENERATION X, BOOMTOWN RATS and much missed new-wavers BETHNAL and appearing on the Live At The Vortex compilation. After leaving Gillan, plans to form a band with Derwood and Mark Laff from Generation X and Everton Williams from Bethnal were abandoned when he was hurriedly recruited by Osbourne following the death of Randy Rhoads. Teaming up with Williams once more in ELECTRIC GYPSIES, he subsequently played with members of SHAM 69, LA GUNS and TWISTED SISTER before resuming his solo career.

Vive Le Rock is much saddened to learn of the passing of former DAMNED bassist Bryn Merrick, following a long battle with cancer.

Bryn replaced Paul Gray in the band in 1983, joining from Cardiff punks VICTIMIZE and first appearing on the ‘Thanks For The Night’ single. He played with the band throughout their commercially successful MCA years, including the albums Phantasmagoria and Anything . He also participated in their psychedelic side project NAZ NOMAD & THE NIGHTMARES and their Give Daddy The Knife, Cindy album. In recent years, he played with RAMONES tribute band, THE SHAMONES.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and fans.

THE MEMBRANES will perform a very special concert in Estonia later this month, featuring a 20-piece choir and a conversation with a leading CERN scientist.

The Universe: Explained will see the band perform the whole of their acclaimed Dark Matter / Dark Energy album, joined by the all-women Sireen choir, at the arthouse cinema Kino Sõprus in Tallinn on Friday 25 September. Forming part of a pan-European series of events called Researchers Night, the evening will also feature an interview with CERN scientist Umut Kose by Membranes founder John Robb.

“I saw the Sireen choir play in Estonia in the spring at Tallinn Music Week festival and it was an astonishing concert,” explains Robb. “I was excited by brilliant use of their voices and heard in my head how it would work perfectly with the drones and drama in the Membranes music. The idea of a choir working with a post punk band is exciting in its possibilities.”

The Tallinn performance is one of a series of occasional events by the band, combining scientific conversations with experiments, films and live music. The series will culminate with a 10,000 capacity festival next summer.

Tickets for the event can be purchased here.

Class of ’77 punks PENETRATION return next month, with their first new album in thirty-six years!

With a new line-up featuring original members Pauline Murray and Robert Blamire, the band will be playing a series of dates surrounding the release of Resolution on their own Polestar label on 2 October.

Check out ‘Two Places (Dos Lugares)’ from the album here.

Initially reforming in 2002, Penetration have gigged steadily and released two singles for Damaged Goods, but have been reluctant to make an album until now. Completed with the help of a successful crowdfunding campaign, Resolution features former BUZZCOCKS drummer John Maher (a colleague of Murray and Blamire from their days in INVISIBLE GIRLS) plus guitarists Steve Wallace and Paul Harvey.

PENETRATION - Resolution a-w webres

The album was mixed by original guitarist Fred Purser, who also makes a guest appearance on lead single ‘Beat Goes On’, while the sleeve was designed by noted 4AD designer Vaughan Oliver, who was in Murray and Blamire’s class at school!

Penetration play….

Fri 18 Sept           Georgian Theatre, Stockton-on-Tees

Sat 19 Sept          Warehouse 23, Wakefield

Sun 20 Sept        Undercover Festival, Woking

Fri 16 Oct             Playhouse, Whitley Bay

Fri 23 Oct             Hairy Dog, Derby (TBC)

Sat 24 Oct            The Garage, London

Get your tickets here.

Formed in County Durham in 1976, Penetration released their acclaimed debut Moving Targets through Virgin in 1978, but split unexpectedly while promoting second album Coming Up For Air the following year. Murray and Blamire went on to collaborate with Maher, John Cooper Clarke and producer Martin Hannett in The Invisible Girls, while Murray also guested on THE ONLY ONES’ Baby’s Got A Gun and Blamire produced the sole album by underrated Scots post-punks SCARS.

Virgin are planning a box set of the band’s back catalogue for the Autumn.
