GALLON DRUNK LIVE SHOW UNEARTHED!

GALLON DRUNK have their youth revisited with the release of a live show from 1992 as a DVD/CD set.

The release, which forms part of Edsel Records’ Access All Areas series, captures the band’s set at a charity concert at London’s Town & Country venue (now the Forum) in September of that year.

Recorded following the release of the band’s debut You, The Night… And The Music, the five-song set includes intense versions of that album’s ‘Some Fool’s Mess’, ‘Two Wings Mambo’ and ‘Just One More’, plus Clawfist singles ‘Draggin’ Along’ and ‘The Last Gasp’. Clocking in at half an hour, the performance features a guest appearance from sax-player Terry Edwards, prior to him becoming a permanent fulltime member.

Band frontman James Johnston told Vive Le Rock: “None of the band even realised the performance was being filmed, so it was a total surprise to finally see the gig some twenty-three years later. We’re playing a lot of the very early material – and it’s a pleasingly feral and very energised noise. Really glad this finally came to light, I’d forgotten how carefree, wild and improvised the band was in ’92.”

Other titles in the Access All Areas series include BUZZCOCKS, JAH WOBBLE, VIC GODARD, MONOCHROME SET and BLUE AEROPLANES.

THIRD WORLD WAR DECLARED (AGAIN)!

A certified proto-punk classic rises to the surface once again next month when Esoteric Recordings reissue the debut album by infamous UK outfit THIRD WORLD WAR.

Originally released in 1971 on the Fly label (home of T REX), the self-titled album has been newly remastered from the original tapes and has been expanded with two bonus tracks and a new essay.

Essentially a duo of Terry Stamp and Jim Avery together with manager and producer John Fenton, Third World War were very much at odds with the prevailing peace’n’love climate of the times, and their primitive politico-rock songs – with titles like ‘Get Out Of Bed You Dirty Red’, ‘Working Class Man’ and ‘Preaching Violence’ – were often more direct than the likes of the PINK FAIRIES.

Part of the fertile early 60s garage scene in the US North West, along with contemporaries The Kingsmen and The Wailers, The Sonics were massively influential on subsequent generations of bands and tracks like ‘The Witch’, ‘Psycho’ and ‘Strychnine’ are all reliable garage evergreens.

NEWTOWN NEUROTICS KICKSTART THEIR TRIUMPH!

Essex punk legends THE NEWTOWN NEUROTICS are to release a live album capturing an explosive London show from 1987.

Recorded at Brunel University, Uxbridge on 4 April 1987, Triumph Over Adversity catches the classic line-up of Steve Drewett, Simon Lomond and Colin Dredd in full flight.

A live set that the band has long wanted to make publicly available, the album includes sleevenotes by Drewett explaining the circumstances of the gig and the recording, which followed the release of their groundbreaking album Kickstarting A Backfiring Nation.

Front cover for vive la rock

Triumph Over Adversity serves as a tribute to bassist Dredd (aka Colin Masters) who sadly passed away in March this year following major surgery and a long period of illness. The band have also set up a Facebook page in his honour.

Drewett, who has just played Glastonbury at the invitation of Billy Bragg, released a solo album KuJenga Society earlier this year. The Neurotics, who’ve been rejoined by drummer Lomond along with bassist Adam Smith, play the Rebellion Festival on 8 August and the launch for ATTILA THE STOCKBROKER’s autobiography at London’s Borderline on 25 September.

WIZARDS OF OZ: THE BOYS NEXT DOOR!

Well, it’s the final day of our week of videos celebrating Aussie rock. It was always going to be a tough choice but we couldn’t let the week go by without hearing from NICK CAVE.

THE BOYS NEXT DOOR met at school in Melbourne in the mid-70s and their cover of Nancy Sinatra’s ‘These Boots Are Made For Walking’ was featured on Lethal Weapons, Australia’s first punk compilation, released on Mushroom Records’ punk imprint Suicide Records in 1978. The only act on the label to achieve any real success, they soon recruited guitarist ROWLAND S HOWARD before morphing into THE BIRTHDAY PARTY. And the rest, as they say, is history.

You can read more about The Birthday Party and other greats of Aussie rock in the new edition of Vive Le Rock!

PHIL RUDD SENTENCED

Errant AC/DC drummer PHIL RUDD has been sentenced having previously pleaded guilty for drug possession and threatening to kill.

Judge Thomas Ingram of Tauranga District Court on New Zealand’s North Island sentenced Rudd to eight months of home detention. He’ll be electronically monitored and undergo rehabilitation for drug and alcohol addiction, and the judge assure him that he’d go to prison if he broke the terms of his sentence.

Rudd’s lawyer argued that a conviction would leave him unable to tour with the band, amounting to a loss of millions of dollars in earnings. The judge, however, said there was no evidence that he was actually still in AC/DC, adding, bizarrely, that “Queen replaced Freddie Mercury”.

Rudd released his first solo album Head Job last year.

WIZARDS OF OZ: THE LAST WORDS!

Day four of our Aussie video week brings us an early punk nugget, described by the label as “Australia’s first new wave hit single”! UK migrants Malcolm Baxter and Andy Groome, under the name THE LAST WORDS, recorded and released ‘Animal World’ themselves in 1977 and it was reissued twice, by Wizard in Oz and then Rough Trade in the UK. Later delving into dub in the company of Adrian Sherwood, the band had a last hurrah on an unlikely 1981 bill at London’s Lyceum alongside Slade, Discharge and U2 (!!!) before calling it a day. The band will be best remembered, though, for this glorious two-minutes-forty-seconds of Buzzcocky pop-punk. Enjoy!

WIZARDS OF OZ: THE SAINTS!

It’s day three of our Aussie video week and this is easily one of our favourites. THE SAINTS formed in Brisbane in 1974 but in the UK their debut single ‘(I’m) Stranded’ arrived seemingly out of nowhere in ’76 when Sounds magazine (rightly) pronounced it Single Of The Week.

Third single ‘This Perfect Day’ earned them a surprise appearance on Top Of The Pops the following year, but it’s the brassy ‘Know Your Product’ from second album Eternally Yours that we’re gonna plump for.

After three classic albums for EMI, guitarist Ed Kuepper split to form LAUGHING CLOWNS while bassist Algy Ward joined THE DAMNED before forming heavy rockers TANK, but charismatic frontman Chris Bailey has helmed a mellower yet still great Saints to this day. Read an interview with him in the new edition of the mag.

CHUMBAWAMBA: THE MOVIE!

Leeds anarchists CHUMBAWAMBA could be about to have their story told in a new documentary film. That’s if film-maker and former singer DUNSTAN BRUCE’s crowdfunding campaign reaches its target.

I Get Knocked Down: The Untold Story Of Chumbawamba charts the band’s unlikely rise from squat gigs to international stardom, and Bruce has set up a Kickstarter campaign to fund the project. Find out more here.

Formed in 1982, Chumbawamba made their debut recorded appearance on Crass Records’ Bullshit Detector 2 compilation before founding the Agit-Prop label to release their sharply political records and promote activism. Controversially signing to EMI in the late 90s, they had a major worldwide hit with the dance-flavoured ‘Tubthumbing’ before infamously dousing then Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott in water at the Brit Awards.

Leaving the band in 2004, Bruce recently made a documentary on The Levellers, A Curious Life and is in the band INTERROBANG.

WIZARDS OF OZ: AC/DC

Well, you’ll have seen the cover of the new issue by now. Today, AC/DC are of course one of the biggest mainstream rock bands in the world. But back in the mid-70s their primitive high-energy take on rock’n’roll and rhythm’n’blues – driven by a yobbish bootboy stomp – helped pave the way for punk.

Here’s the fresh-faced fivesome back where it all began. AC/DC, we salute you!

EATER PARADE!

Original London punks EATER are to get the deluxe treatment next month when their sole album – The Album – is reissued through Cherry Red.

First released in 1977, the latest model comprises the whole original album, plus a second disc of rare singles and compilation tracks – essentially their complete recorded output.

Formed in North London in ’76 by four schoolfriends, Eater’s profile was boosted on the teen scene thanks to fresh-faced 14-year-old drummer Dee Generate. Playing their first gig in Manchester supported by Buzzcocks, they were one of the first bands to play legendary punk venue The Roxy, supported by The Damned and Johnny Moped. They featured on the Live At The Roxy WC2 album and in Don Letts’ seminal screen document Punk Rock Movie.

Reuniting for occasional gigs in recent years, frontman Andy Blade published a memoir The Secret Life Of A Teenage Punk Rocker in 2005.
