THE WORLD NEEDS PiL

PUBLIC IMAGE LTD return later this year with a new album – their tenth – and a new single. What The World Needs Now… is out on 4 September, preceded on 21 August by the single ‘Double Trouble’ on 10″ vinyl. Both releases will be on their own Pil Official label distributed by Cargo. They’ll be followed by an extensive tour of the UK, Europe and the US.

ALBUM 31 FROM THE FALL

THE FALL return with a new album this week via Cherry Red Records. Sub-Lingual Tablet is the 31st album from Mark E Smith’s Manchester iconoclasts and features their current line-up of Peter Greenway, Keiron Melling, Elena Poulou, Daren Garratt and David Spurr.

The band have lined up a short series of UK dates in support of the release…

May 23 The Boiler Shop Stephenson Works, Newcastle

May 27 Sub 89, Reading

May 29 Manchester Cathedral, Manchester

May 31 The Globe, Cardiff

Jun 05   Umberslade Estate, West Midlands

Jun 24   Glastonbury 2015, Somerset

Read Steve Hill’s review of the album below…

THE FALL

SUB-LINGUAL TABLET

(Cherry Red Records)

The latest cryptic missive from the mind of Mark E Smith.

8/10

Studio album number 31 finds The Fall in unrelenting form, delivering arguably the most entertaining release yet from this current longstanding line-up. Opener ‘Venice With The Girls’ is a bona fide foot-tapper, with Smith reverting to his traditional singing voice as opposed to the feral growl that some feel has blighted their recent output. He drifts into various vocal styles throughout, however, including a virtual spoken-word affair in ‘Junger Cloth,’ providing the album’s first laugh-out-loud moment as Smith seemingly attempts to negotiate an archaic eye-test chart in his distinctive Salford burr.

Lyrically, as ever, Sub-Lingual Tablet is a riddle wrapped inside an enigma, but there are honourable mentions for Pierce Brosnan’s bed-wet pills, a campaign to kidnap Bono, and a long overdue return for the Curly-Wurly.

Very much this year’s ‘Blindness’ or ‘Reformation,’ central track ‘Auto Chip 2014-2016’ is a ten-minute cyclical rant in which Smith repeatedly poses the question “How bad are English musicians?” as his band of (mainly) English musicians play as if their lives depend upon it – which they possibly do.

Bang up to date, the album ends with a furious dual blast of anti-technology as MES berates his lack of a Facebook troll in the judiciously renamed ‘Fibre Book Troll,’ culminating in an unexpected outro of some delightful whistling (Peel would have approved). By now incandescent with rage, the self-explanatory ‘Quit iPhone’ brings proceedings to a close in style. Joyfully indecipherable, Sub-Lingual Tablet is another remarkable album from Britain’s most extraordinary band. Contains foul language.

THEE CEE CEES OFFER A SOLUTION

The election result may not have been what they wanted but agitating supergroup THEE CEE CEES’ belt and braces approach to rock’n’politics saw them release their debut single and album during the same week.

Their debut album Solution Songs, recorded under the radar at the BBC’s Maida Vale Studios, is available through Blang Records.

DADDY LONG LEGS STEP OUT

Psychotic NYC blues trio DADDY LONG LEGS are in the UK this week and next, touting their speaker-shredding second album Blood From A Stone, produced by Heavy Trash’s Matt Verta-Ray and out now on Norton Records.

The band, featuring drummer Josh Styles and guitarist Murat Akturk backing the wailing harp of Daddy Long Legs himself, have been blowing up a storm since the release of their 2012 debut Evil Eye On You, tearing up stages alongside the Jim Jones Revue, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and The Sonics.

This, their second UK visit, should see their Dr Feelgood-through-a-blender sound taking very few prisoners!

MARGATE’S MOD BANK HOLIDAY

The Mods will be returning to Margate over the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend of 22-25 May for a celebration of Mod culture.

Fifty years on from the notorious Mods vs Rockers seafront battles with headlines like Wild Ones Beat Up Margate, the Kent town will host live bands, DJs, a scooter show, record fair, dance competition and more over three nights and two days.

Promoters Great British Media & Culture – a partnership of Eli Thompson of Margate Soul Weekend and Rob Bailey of New Untouchables – have put together an excellent programme, including live headline sets from Medway acts The James Taylor Quartet and Graham Day & The Forefathers, plus tribute band The Small Fakers.

Nighttime events take place at the Westcoast Club on the town’s King Street, with the daytime events, including a Battle Of The Bands stage, in the piazza opposite.

Tickets – either for the whole weekend or for individual events – can be purchased here.

GENERAL ELECTION SPARKS NEUROTICS ACTION!

A Facebook campaign to make ‘Kick Out The Tories’ by The Newtown Neurotics the UK’s Number 1 single in election week has sadly failed.

But that hasn’t stopped the band regrouping for a series of dates, while frontman Steve Drewett has been invited by Billy Bragg to play the Left Field Stage at this year’s Glastonbury Festival.

‘Kick Out The Tories’, originally released as a single by the Harlow, Essex trio in 1982, marked a major politically-charged shift in the lyrics of frontman Steve Drewett, directly influenced by the 1979 election of the Conservative Government under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

As part of the thriving early 80s UK punk scene, the band released a series of classic singles including ‘Living With Unemployment’ and ‘When The Oil Runs Out’, along with albums such as Beggars Can Be Choosers and Kickstarting A Backfiring Nation (featuring Porky The Poet alias Phil Jupitus).

Disbanding in 1988, Drewett formed The Indestructible Beat before fielding a reconfigured Neurotics for sporadic gigs over the past decade, most recently playing an election special at London’s Pipeline club in April. Latest dates

23 May                 Fibber Magee’s, Dublin

11 June                 Fox & Newt, Leeds

12 June                 Westgarth Social Club, Middlesbrough

The Who previously headlined Glastonbury in 2007.

The band, who are currently on The Who Hits 50 world tour, also headline the British Summertime festival in Hyde Park on 6 June, supported by Weller, Kaiser Chiefs, Johnny Marr and Gaz Coombes.
