I can tell you that there is no such person as Marcus Hook. Nor does the ‘band’ originate from the borough of Marcus Hook in Pennsylvania. This ‘band’ only ever existed in the studio, releasing three singles and one album in the early ’70s. If any of these turn up on internet auction sites today, collectors bankrupt their PayPal accounts to win them. But the scariest fact is that if the Marcus Hook Roll Band had come out of the studio, played live, travelled the world, promoted their records, and found the success they certainly deserved, then the whole AC/DC phenomenon probably would never have got off the ground. Do we have your attention now? George Young and Harry Vanda – Credit Philip Morris [VandaYoung_credit_PhilipMorris (2)_LOW.jpg]The Marcus Hook Roll Band is one obscure, but significant, persona of the legendary partnership of Harry Vanda & George Young. Their better known personas are the ‘60s beat phenomenon The Easybeats, and later the mysterious entity Flash and The Pan. Dutchman Harry Vanda and Scottish George Young first met as displaced teenagers in an immigration hostel in Sydney, Australia. Capitol Records in the USA expressed an interest in having an album from The Marcus Hook Roll Band having heard the single ‘Natural Man’. The Album - Tales of Old Grand-Daddy The main recording was during July/August 1973 in Sydney. A key ingredient was the duty free supplied by producer Alan “Wally” Waller—Jim Beam Old Grand-dad bourbon whiskey — hence the album name. [YoungYoungYoung_credit_PhilipMorris (1)_LOW.jpg]George Young explained “We had Harry, myself and my kid brothers, Malcolm and Angus. We all got rotten, except for Angus, who was too young, and we spent a month in there boozing it up every night. That was the first thing Malcolm and Angus did before AC/DC. We didn’t take it very seriously so we thought we’d include them to give them an idea of what recording was all about.” Angus, Malcolm and George Young – credit Philip Morris Richard Lush the engineer explains … “The sessions were great fun, fuelled with plenty of Old Grand-Dad bourbon. Angus Young drank milk. Angus and his brother Malcolm played guitars as well as Harry.” The production notes, recently unearthed at Abbey Road reveal that on many of the tracks Malcolm Young shared rhythm guitar and guitar solos. The Kentucky bourbon seems to have affected everybody’s memory. For instance, there is some great slide guitar on the album but no-one can remember who supplied it. Harry thinks it might have been Kiwi born Kevin Borich, but Kevin does not remember being there. Wally vaguely remembers Malcolm doing some slide-guitar, but really can’t be sure. So the challenge for the astute listener is to figure out which licks and solos belong to a seventeen year old Angus Young. We’ve got our money on the second guitar in the ‘Cry For Me’ lead break. Adam Ant has recruited original drummer, Dave Barbarossa and bass player Leigh Gorman to join his brand new band, entitled: ‘The Ministers Of New Super Heavy Funk Punk.’ The band also features two members of his current band, Jola – drums and Tom Edwards – guitar, implemented by Will Crewdson – guitar. Dave Barbarossa and Leigh Gorman (and Adam) were the very last line-up to perform the Dirk Wears White Sox album live at the Electric Ballroom, London on 31st December 1979, prior to Malcolm McLaren poaching Barbarossa and Gorman for Bow Wow Wow and prior to Adam, forming Adam And The Ants 2 and going onto enjoy global success.

Last year Adam released his highly acclaimed, Adam Ant Is The BlueBlack Hussar In Marrying The Gunners’s Daughter, on his own BlueBlack Hussar Record label. Supporting the release with a forty-four city US tour, last summer, which was the culmination of over 300 live shows, Adam has performed across the world, since the summer of 2010. Last year Adam also appeared on the Oprah Winfrey & Jimmy Kimmel shows.
Legendary film director, Jack Bond, (director of the extraordinary film ‘Dali In New York’) captured Adam’s return to the music business with his documentary The Blueblack Hussar. The film captures Adam playing at some of the old venues he played in his punk days, 100 Club, Electric Ballroom and a get together with producer Mark Ronson and Jamie Reynolds (The Klaxons) at the original Sex Pistol rehearsal premises in Denmark Street. Before moving onto Paris, where he was filmed recording some of his favourite French pop tunes by Johnny Hallyday, Serge Gainsbourg and Plastic Bertrand…and meets with his favourite actress, Charlotte Rampling. It also captures Adam performing at London’s O2 and ends with him taking the stage at London’s Hyde Park, as a special guest to Rod Stewart, with Jon Bon Jovi looking on approvingly from the side of the stage. The film is co-produced by Adam and Jack Bond for Dal-Segno Pictures and will be released later this year.
The Hammersmith Apollo show, on 19th April, coincides with Record Store Day, which sees the release of the Dirk Wears White Sox album, as a 5,000 limited edition (3,000 white vinyl) mastered by Adam and including a special bonus insert package containing publicity items from Adam’s personal archive. This constitutes the second release on Adam’s Blublack Hussar label, licensed by Sony Music, who have allowed Adam complete artistic freedom to produce, what Adam calls, “a labour of Love,” a collectable for record buyers, vinyl lovers and music lovers in general. Adam will also be making an appearance at Rough Trade Shop on Portobello Road and at Sister Ray’s in Berwick St during the day on April 19th.
The Hammersmith Apollo show will be the only performance of Dirk Wears White Sox in it’s entirety. It will be a two part show, the second part being a selection from his twenty-two Top 40 singles, including three number One Hits, Stand And Deliver, Prince Charming and Goody Two Shoes. The show is conceived and designed by Adam personally and will feature an exclusive limited edition of T Shirts and other merchandise, chosen from his archive and produced by his fashion line, Blueblack Hussar.
Song selections from Dirk Wears White Sox will feature heavily in the other five shows on the current tour. The full dates are

Announces details of Record Store Day single:

Rollin’ and Tumblin’ 10” Single

On Saturday 19th April, as part of Record Store Day, Parlophone Records will release a limited, one-off Richard Hawley single.

Rollin’ and Tumblin’ is a hypnotic bastardisation of an old delta blues standard, originally recorded by such artists as Elmore James, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. Richard and his band have taken the song and given it a swampy blues, psychedelic make-over, so much so, you can almost smell the molasses. It’s that goddam heavy.

Richard says of releasing Rollin’ and Tumblin’ for Record Store Day: “vinyl has been a constant throughout my whole life and knowing there’s a special day celebrating it and the joy of the ‘artifact’ really floats my boat.” Adding, “to be a small part in trying to keep record shops going is mint. Record shops have kept me going for so long it’s time to pay a little of that back. Not to mention it gave me and the guys a chance to try something a bit different. Long live vinyl!”

The song was recorded at Sheffield’s Yellow Arch Studios, by: Richard (Silvertone Fuzz guitar, co-producer), Colin Elliot (bass, co-producer), Dean Beresford (drums), Shez Sheridan (Baritone guitar), Jon Trier (keyboards) and Clive Morgan (harmonica).

Rollin’ and Tumblin’ will be available on 10-inch only:

A.      Rollin’ and Tumblin’

B.      (etched Parlophone logo)

This will be Richard’s first new material since his Mercury Awards nominated, number 3 album ‘Standing At The Sky’s Edge’.

Debbie Harry Interested in Blondie Biopic

There’s been a lot of talk about biopics featuring rock musicians lately. There’s the Hendrix movie featuring André 3000 as the late guitarist, and also the Freddie Mercury film which has been surrounded by much drama as of late.

When Blondie singer Debbie Harry was interviewed by Stylist magazine  recently, she expressed interest in a possible biopic featuring her legendary band: “It’s difficult. You can only really skim the surface. If it’s good entertainment, honest, well-acted and directed? Maybe,” said the singer before continuing “I think many people could be informed and have a finer appreciation of the person or era.”

However, Debbie said she would probably not be the best source of information about specific events in her career: “My impressions will simply be that, impressions. It’s funny, someone will say something and then a memory will come flashing back of some big event. But I’m noteless. I guess I’m lazy. Well, I’m not so much a person who deals with facts as much as feelings.

NEW COLLECTORS SERIES ON CD We've been thinking about it for a LOOOONG TIME - a series of CDs for the die-hard fans and collectors. It's the reason Captain Oi started in the first place. To bring out the albums by bands that are ignored by the mainstream labels and media... If we had our way there's loads of releases we'd like to do but unfortunately you can't press 1000 copies if only 20 people buy them! For the second time in just over a month, it seems Duane Peters, skateboard legend and longtime member of the punk scene through bands like U.S. Bombs, Die Hunns, and Gunfight, is currently missing. A post from Duane’s family to the US BombsFacebook page tonight reads as follows:

Via Audrey Peters Gomez: If anybody has seen my brother Duane Peters in the last two weeks, would you please let me know? He hasn’t been in touch with anyone, including his kids and his attorney, His van is gone and his neighbors haven’t seen him. We believe that he is in need of medical treatment and we’re very concerned. If you spot him, and can make an immediate phone call, please contact the bailbondsman at (888)857-2752. We’re hoping that he can be apprehended and get the care and treatment he needs.

As you’ll recall, Peters was reportedly arrested early last month (February 9th) on suspicion of domestic violence and went missing for a day or so after his release. We’ll keep you posted on this one.

Goober Patrol, well you’ve all heard the name by now. It’s been about 23 years and yet you still don’t go to their shows or buy their albums – not even the ones released by the awesome (say it like a yank teen!) US punk label Fat Wreck Chords. You probably went to the pub next door when they toured with Green Day, Nofx and The Offspring , and did your American friends write to you about their numerous US tours? No. Their bass player even forgot he was in the band and joined the Toy Dolls. Have you seen his coconuts?

7 Day Conspiracy are persistent. Let’s face it, 11 years playing punk rock, touring up and down the UK and Europe in a bloody Ford Fiesta, releasing three albums and two EPs for which the BPI pointedly refused to issue official Gold discs and they’re still not millionaires, they’re not even big in Japan – something had to give. So they discovered Calypso and added luscious 3 part harmonies to the insightful lyric “You’re A Fucking Cunt”. But they made it catchy as hell. It was that or cheese craft apparently.

Bomber Music has captured the essence of this overwhelming underachievement and a split album, one side for each band, will be released on April 1st 2014. That’s a Tuesday, not a Monday because really – do you seriously think we’re concerned about a chart position? The album is imaginatively called “Split” and the artwork is a garish shade of pumpkin orange, which will clash alarmingly with the green heavyweight Vinyl inside. There will be no CD.

We do not send out hard copies for review, only links to stream or download. Sorry.

“Goober Patrol will doubtless never achieve more than a fleeting mention when the early 90s punk guitar scene is assessed” All Music

Sat 22nd March – REDHILL, Hellfire Club
Sat 29th March – LONDON Streatham White Lion (w/Bernie Torme & Jimmy Owen)
With a wealth of hard-won experience in their hard-rockin’, hard-livin’ ranks, the band put on a highly entertaining, and highly volatile, live show, which punters will struggle to peel their eyes away from.  Speaking to Vive le Rock magazine this month, Dale warned gig-goers; “the dynamic within the ‘Cowboys, especially live, has always been an edgy one – will the band still exist by the end of the set? – or indeed the next song… past members have quit mid-set!”.  He adds that “the current line-up is great and the sound is the most cogent it has ever been”.
On ‘10 Tales From The Gin Palace’, The Peckham Cowboys craft their distinctive ‘deep sarf Lahndon blues’ sound from a heady blend of bloozy barroom pianos, sleazy slide guitar, and even down ‘n’ dirty dub touches, painting a Hogarth-esque image of Dickensian rogues and Del Boy types ducking ‘n’ diving through London‘s gutters.
Reviewing the album in Classic Rock magazine, Kris Needs declared the band sound “as filthy as the streets they sing about, with ’Poor Boy Blues’ a monolithic dirt bag anthem… While conducting no-holds barred rock ‘n’ raunch assaults with deft aplomb, touches like McKay’s sublime horns and rebel toaster Congo Natty’s spot on the dubbed out ‘Don’t Damn The Hypnotist’ add depth, and ‘She Was Sweet On Me’ cheekily heists the Stones ‘Start Me Up’ – 7/10”.

Dry Heave promotions proudly present their first London show in 3 years!

Fri 11th April 2014 @
The Black Heart, Camden

The Stupids, from Ipswich, formed in 1984 and played some blazingly fast US-influenced hardcore punk/thrash in a time and place that was mostly filled with crusty metal punk, UK82, and anarcho punk. Along with fellow UK bands like A.O.A., Heresy, and Ripcord, The Stupids took US hardcore to a new level, making it faster and more intense. But where other such bands had mainly poignant and political lyrics, the Stupids wrote less serious lyrics about such things as an elephant man, love (jokingly of course), hating everyone, hating new wave, skateboarding, and more. The band split in ’89 & returned in ’09 with their first album in 20 years, ‘The Kids Don’t Like It’, treating the 21st century as unfinished business, and not some insipid cash in or nostalgia trip living on former glories – this is a band at the top of their game.. they sound better than ever, they are better live than they ever were. This is their first London show in 3 years!

Leeds’ JADED EYES, who although a relatively new band , feature members who have been active in the punk scene for many years, in bands such as Voorhees, The Horror, John Holmes, Dead Pets, Geoffrey Oi!Cott and many many more. Sharing a collective love of the Dischord sounds of the likes of Dag Nasty and Government Issue and mixing them with the home grown UK guitar driven punk sounds of the likes of The Ruts, The Damned and HDQ,

Doors 7.30pm – Advance tickets £6, £7 OTD

Weds 19th March – London, Old Blue Last

w/ Yards (feat members of Ghost Of A Thousand & Astrohenge) & Blasted (feat members of Winnebago Deal) *free show*

Since their inception in early 2009 the five friends from Utrecht, Netherlands that make up John Coffey have been creating a storm as a force to be reckoned with, on both their 2009 debut album ‘Vanity’ and its subsequent 2012 follow up ‘Bright Companions’. Their incendiary mixture of punk rock, screamo, metal and modern hardcore all served up with a big shot of rock ‘n’roll bravery has earned them a fearsome live reputation as performances at Groezrock and Speedfest festivals are testament to. Further tours with the likes of Cancer BatsA Day To Remember & Parkway Drive only helping to cement this reputation further. ‘Bright Companions’ was produced by Grammy award winning Pelle Gunnerfeldt (Refused, The Hives) and Jag Jago (ex – Ghost Of A Thousand) at the legendary Grondahl Studio in Sweden and has lead to the band being described as :- ‘A Storm Is Coming, and it comes directly from the Netherlands. John Coffey sounded the attack with a charming post-whatever-bastard of rock and punk, hardcore and plenty of chaos”. The quintet are currently preparing for the release of their third, as yet untitled album.

So if you’re a fan of The Bronx, Ghost Of A Thousand, Refused or Every Time I Die you’d be wise to check out John Coffey bring the live chaos!

 AP2014.001 APRIL 2014

GeZ Addictive – vocals / Ollie Hoon – guitar / Ben Hanson – bass / Kevin Nixon – drums

UK PUNK LEGENDS Anti-Pasti have come roaring back with a powerful new album on the way – the first to feature new singer GeZ Addictive.

And while 2014 marks the opening of a new chapter, Anti-Pasti’s street fighting punk’n’roll anthems for the underdog strike a chord as relevant now as it’s ever been.

The industrial rumble of their Midlands home may have given way to the sleek hiss of hi-tech engineering, but Anti-Pasti’s thunderous locomotive rolls on untamed.

“I like to think of us as a socially aware band,” explains drummer Kevin Nixon. “The new stuff has that certain power, as did the old, but perhaps with a little more maturity and a wider world view. GeZ is a genuinely angry guy, so you can expect the delivery to be pretty up front and the music reflects the current mood of the band … this is Anti-Pasti for the 21st century.”

GeZ Addictive adds: “Within the band, a big deal for me was politics. I’m known for staying true to my beliefs and wearing my heart on my sleeve. The first conversation about me joining was politics, to make sure we’re all on the same sheet.

“With the new material the whole band have input and their own ways of embellishing parts, so it does create subtle layers that take songs that could be good anthemic chants into something a little bit more crafted. This band is raring to go.”

Although Anti-Pasti sit proud among the list of bands who rode the wave of early Eighties punk, there have been qualities that always set them apart.

“Musically, we never thought of ourselves as being like many of our contemporaries,” says Nixon. “We had great arrangements and key changes although at the time that was partly to hide musical limitations.

“The nuclear countdown clock was ticking loud in the early Eighties so of course that was a hot topic and a lot of our lyrics were anti-war – you look around the globe now and not a lot has changed.

“We wrote songs about the rising dangers of extremism and the corruption of belief, but we dropped some of those back in the day as we were worried that it may attract the wrong type of punk or skinhead, because at the time violence and hooliganism were rife and we didn’t want that label.

“Our new material is very much the in the same vein, using topics that provoke a bit of fury. This is a new chapter … Ben and Ollie are fantastic musicians and GeZ has brought his vocal talents to the party but it’s gonna be a whole new thing with a different trio in front of me. We can’t wait to get out there.”

Founded in 1978 in Derby, Martin Roper on vocals, Dugi Bell on guitar, Stu Winfield on bass and Stan Smith on drums released their debut EP, "Four Sore Points", featuring the all-time punk rock classic "No Government", on their own Dose record label.

Winfield and Smith were soon replaced by Nixon on drums and Will Hoon on bass before the group signed to Rondelet Records and re-released "Four Sore Points" and the "Let Them Free" single in January 1981. The same year their debut album, "The Last Call" reached number 1 in the Indie Charts and spent seven weeks in the UK Album Chart, peaking at No. 31.

Third single, "Six Guns", reached number 1 in the UK Indie Chart, as did the joint 12” single with The Exploited "Don’t Let ‘Em Grind You Down". The two bands and Discharge were part of the legendary Apocalypse Now UK Tour in 1981.

Single "East To The West" was released in 1982, followed by the last Anti-Pasti album and single, both titled "Caution In The Wind", which featured Ollie Hoon, Will’s brother, on guitar. A self-titled singles retrospective surfaced a year later, but the group split in 1983 following the departure of Roper. There was a reunion in 1995, mini-tours of the UK and Germany, and further shows in 2013 before Roper’s departure.

“Far from being the last hurrah of old punks about to settle into middle age; make no mistake, Anti-Pasti is a visceral beast of a band, lean and lithe, supple and sinuous” – Louder Than War, 2013

“Vital and vibrant … a no-nonsense statement of intent” – Vive Le Rock, 2013
