PETER HOOK & THE LIGHT TOUR

Peter Hook and The Light Announce “Unknown Pleasures” tour for November 2012

Following their first full UK tour in late May/ early June of this year and a recent headline performance at The Hop Farm, Peter Hook And The Light take “Unknown Pleasures” on the road to a host of new venues across England in late November 2012. The Light are set to play the widely acclaimed album sequentially and in its entirety along with other classic and lesser known material from Warsaw and Joy Division’s repertoires.
Receiving great reviews and reactions on the early Summer dates including some five star reviews and hugely admiring comments, The Light recent completed performing the trilogy of Joy Division’s official album releases with two “Still” concerts in Manchester in May 2012 and have now come to play every single Joy Division track ever released.
Drawing on this in their lengthy, extensive sets, The Light have toured constantly since first performing “Unknown Pleasures back in May 2010 and have taken the show across the world to the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, Australia, New Zealand and practically every European country, drawing crowds that encompass both original Joy Division fans and the younger generation influenced by the band’s material.
With the full performance of “Unknown Pleasures” at the centre of the show, The Light play the first album in track order replicating the album experience and atmosphere created by legendary producer, Martin Hannett. Hannett’s studio mastery along with the rawness of the bands first album material means that the reputation of the LP remains as powerful as ever, with fans and also the bands who are acknowledged to have taken on the template of Joy Division’s sound in the modern era.
“Unknown Pleasures”, considered one of the most stunning debut albums ever released, came to yield many landmark tracks, including “Disorder” “Insight”, “New Dawn Fades”, and “She’s Lost Control” but alongside the album,The Light also turn to Hooky’s early repertoire to perform many other Warsaw and Joy Division tracks, some of which have never been played live previously apart from within The Light’s live performances.
Supports on the tour come from The Shinies (http://soundcloud.com/shinies) at the Coventry, Preston, Leicester, Stoke, Leeds and Newcastle concerts and Tiny Philips (http://www.tinyphillips.com) at the Southend, Exeter, Norwich, Portsmouth, Gloucester, and Brighton gigs.

HENDRIX EXHIBITION

Hear My Train a Comin’: Hendrix Hits London at The Hospital Club Gallery: 27 July – 31 August 2012

Summer 2012 sees the arrival of a magical new exhibition in London, to celebrate what would have been Jimi Hendrix’s 70th birthday. Hear My Train a Comin’: Hendrix Hits London, presented by Seattle’s EMP Museum, will run at in The Hospital Club’s iconic gallery space from 27 July – 31 August 2012.
Hear My Train a Comin’: Hendrix Hits London focuses on Hendrix’s quick rise to prominence in the London music scene, from his arrival in the UK on September 24, 1966 to his brief return to America to play at the Monterey International Pop Festival on June 18, 1967. In less than nine months, Hendrix had transitioned from unknown guitar-slinger to darling of the British music press, and was poised on the edge of superstardom.
The exhibition will include over 100 artifacts, some of which have never been exhibited before. They include such gems as Jimi’s original blues records, photographs, fan letters, as well as iconic items of his clothing such as his “Westerner” hat (which he wore frequently in 1967 – 1968 and is wearing on the cover of his 1968 Smash Hits album). Further exhibition videos will incorporate many oral history interviews with myriad musicians and people related to Hendrix’s story, such as Jeff Beck, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Iggy Pop, Al Hendrix, Charles Shaar Murray, Ravi Shankar and Joey Ramone.
The exhibit comes through collaboration of two projects from philanthropist and investor Paul G. Allen. EMP was founded by Allen, the Microsoft co-founder, in his hometown of Seattle in 2000. It is an acclaimed, interactive museum of music, pop culture and science fiction. Allen opened The Hospital Club in 2002 as a new professional and social hub for people working in the creative arts.

“This was the last song I wrote for the album,” says Cornwell about the title track Totem And Taboo. “It’s become one of my favourites. A hint of Rebel Rebel with some Marc Bolan glam thrown in. I’ve always liked songs with marching 4’s on the snare, and that’s what it is supposed to be, a rallying call for like-minded souls.”
Cornwell was the original guitarist, singer, and main songwriter of the British punk rock band The Stranglers. He’s enjoyed massive UK and European success with 10 hit albums and 21 Top Forty hit singles including Peaches, No More Heroes, Golden Brown, Always the Sun, (Get A) Grip (On Yourself), Nice N Sleazy, Duchess and No Mercy.
A nationwide October UK tour will see Cornwell perform the Totem And Taboo album in its entirety, followed by The Stranglers’ seminal 1977 album No More Heroes performed in its entirety. Tickets: 0844 478 0898. Book Online: www.thegigcartel.com. VIP packages: www.hughcornwell.com.

ART PUNK SAMPLE – EXHIBITION

Exhibition runs 13th July – Aug 4th 2012 Private View 13th July 6pm – 9:30pm

The Sex Pistols first gig, art clothes shop “Pollocks”, designer Max Clendinning, Cult 80s band Fad Gadget, peripatetic art exhibition “Turtle Salon”, incidental music for Sex And The City and C.I.S.

– one person links these disparate things, drummer and art maker Nick Cash who is showing his collage, cut and paste montage works created from the mid-1980s to the present day.
Cash came up with his own process of removing ink and surfaces of images using sellotape to transfer them to his cut-up compositions.

Sometimes these “sampled” collages are formally constructed and other times more random juxtapositions. Cash says that his musical experiences, as drummer with Fad Gadget for 6 years (and five albums) and later with prag VEC, The Lines, unmen and The Members connect to the artwork, the notion of repeated riffs, themes and improvisations being common to both mediums.

In 1976, following a year at St Martins School of Art where he fell in with Glen Matlock and was one of the few to witness the birth of The Sex Pistols, Nick created his own line of art clothes which he sold in his shop “Pollocks” in Brixton. Writer Jon Savage and Polystyrene of band X-ray Spex were customers and now The Museum Of London has some items in their collection.

The subsequent collage of his life sees Nick as post- war furniture and curio dealer, musician, father and, recently, art curator – his exhibition “Avant Craft” about architect/designer Max Clendinning (highlighting his own collecting obsession with 1960s furniture) was at the Chelsea Space within the Chelsea Art College site at Pimlico earlier this summer.
All the while Nick has been making these artworks, mostly for his own amusement – now they are on display for yours.
