JIMMY CLIFF ALBUM w/RANCID

JIMMY CLIFF TO RELEASE REBIRTH ON JULY 16, 2012,

VIA TROJAN RECORDS / UNIVERSAL

NEW STUDIO ALBUM PRODUCED BY GRAMMY® AWARD-WINNING PRODUCER AND RANCID FRONTMAN TIM ARMSTRONG

June 20th 2012 London UK –  Trojan Records/Universal Music Enterprises today announced it will release REBIRTH, the new studio album from Grammy® Award-winning musician, actor, singer, songwriter and producer Jimmy Cliff, on Monday July 16th 2012.

“I was inspired to re-visit my musical past and decided to go back to my roots on this record,” said Cliff. “REBIRTH is a new chapter in my life and signifies a rebirth in my career and all I have left to accomplish.”

REBIRTH once again pairs the reggae superstar with the award-winning producer and punk legend Tim Armstrong, who produced the thirteen-track album. Armstrong also produced Cliff’s Sacred Fire EP which was released late in 2011, and Rolling Stone magazine hailed the music as Cliff’s “best music in decades.”

Jimmy is one of my musical heroes and I’ve been responding to his music my entire life,” said Armstrong.  “I enjoy the creative spontaneity of collaborating with other people. I always want to try new things. It’s the type of creative energy I have.”

Together they bring fire to both compelling Cliff originals and a couple of pointedly chosen covers. “World Upside Down” and “One More” show an artist as engaged with – and troubled by – the state of the world as much as he was when he made such landmark songs as “You Can Get It If You Really Want” and the title song of the movie The Harder They Come, both game-changers that will mark their 40th anniversary this year. A version of the Clash’s “The Guns of Brixton” taps into the popular uprisings for freedom in the Middle East, not to mention the recent London riots, which took place as sessions for the album were underway. Rancid’s affectionate portrait “Ruby Soho” brings the generations together, a full-circle journey of icon and acolytes.

The first single from REBIRTH will be the track “One More,” which serves as a personal statement of purpose and a promise to both himself and the world affirming that he has much left to do. “‘One More’ kind of speaks to that,” says Cliff. “One more shot at the prize. One more shot at the goal. Straight from the soul and in control.”  One More” will be released digitally on June 30th and is available as a free download for one week from 19th June here: https://pages.umusic-mail.com/ume/jimmycliff/

Cliff is currently touring the world and kicked off the U.S. leg on June 5, 2012, in Brooklyn, NY, at Celebrate Brooklyn! Opening Night Gala and Concert at Prospect Park Bandshell. Listen to the performance in its entirety via NPR Music HERE. The following night Cliff performed on The Late Show with David Letterman. His performance of “One More” can be viewed HERE.  Whilst in the UK recently Cliff appeared on ‘Later With Jools Holland’, you can see the performance here:  http://bbc.in/M0WMF3

DEVO/BLONDIE TOUR

 courtesy of Reuters.

Blondie and Devo, two pioneering bands of new wave music played different styles during their heyday, but more than three decades later, they’ve found common ground for an upcoming U.S. tour that vibrates with 1980s nostalgia.

Blondie, formed by Deborah Harry, guitarist Chris Stein and drummer Clem Burke in 1975, came up through the ranks of New York City’s punk rock scene in the late 1970s, breaking into mainstream pop with their album "Parallel Lines."

Devo, formed in 1972 by brothers Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh and named for their concept that people of Earth were in a stage of "de-evolution," gained a loyal following with their wild costumes and high-energy music epitomized by the 1980 hit "Whip It."

The pair plan to "Whip It to Shreds" – the name of their brief U.S. tour of 13 cities starting September 7.

"It seemed like a nice, complimentary fit because it takes us back all the way to the very beginning," Devo singer Mark Mothersbaugh told Reuters as tickets went on sale last Friday.

Harry, the lead singer of Blondie, echoed Mothersbaugh’s sentiments, adding that their music may resonate even deeper with today’s audience – both young and old.

"I’ve always really loved their songs and their music and their crazy style," Harry said about Devo. "Back in the day, it was very fresh and advanced. I think it’s more contemporary today than it was back then."

Harry, 66, who has toured annually for the past 15 years and launched her own solo career, said she still loves hitting the road to play live.

"I love performing even more now. I’ve been doing it for long enough that it’s completely heartwarming to walk out on stage and have people going crazy for you and wanting to hear your music, especially if you’ve written it yourself," she said.

While audiences at Blondie shows often expect to hear the big hits – the band has sold over 40 million records worldwide – Harry said her favorite songs to perform are from the band’s lesser-known albums, like "Cautious Lip" and "Bermuda Triangle Blues" from 1978’s "Plastic Letters."

She maintains Blondie’s live shows will be "straight ahead rock ‘n’ roll," but the band will incorporate some new elements such as visual projections and a "technical look on stage" for their tour with Devo.

"Even when we were at the peak of our exposure and popularity, we never had a show with multiple costume changes and back-up singers and dancers," Harry said.

Devo’s portion of the show? That’s a different story.

‘DEVO HAS MARINATED THROUGH THE DECADES’

Known for their electro-pop sounds, creative outfits and frenzied stage shows, the dads of de-evolution bring back the synthesizers and guitars of decades ago, alongside newer technologies, to create their sound live.

Mothersbaugh, 62, promised some costume changes in their hour-long set and music that has never mellowed with age. If anything, it’s only dug deeper into the Devo philosophy.

"Devo has marinated through the decades and become more scarier and intense, and if anyone wrote it off as quirky or a joke, now they can see that we were obsessed with a particular viewpoint of life on planet Earth," he said.

The singer said Devo, whose first album "Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!" was produced by experimental music master Brian Eno, has seen a resurgence in recent years led by the popularity of electronic music and people discovering them on the Internet.

"Kids nowadays are more sophisticated about music," Mothersbaugh said. "They can find a band they’re a fan of, and if the band says they listen to old Devo music, kids have enough information to get them interested and listening to things. The Internet had a lot to do with Devo’s staying power here."

Blondie reunited in 1997 due to the popularity of new bands like No Doubt and Garbage, which had a sound similar to Harry’s group. Blondie released the album "Panic of Girls" in 2011. Harry credited their longevity to their passion for music.

"I never thought we’d be working and making music this long, but the people I always really admired, the musicians like BB King or the Stones or Paul McCartney or Bob Dylan, music is their life," Harry said. "It’s not just something you did in your youth. It’s something that you live for."

BAD BRAINS DOCUMENTARY

A feature-length documentary about the seminal punk band, Bad Brains is getting its first public screening this week.

‘Bad Brains: A Band In DC’ will make its premiere later this week at the SilverDocs festival, which takes place in Silver Spring, Maryland USA. There is no confirmed UK release date for the film as yet.

Bad Brains are one of the most important and influential American bands still working today. They melded punk and reggae into an innovative style that has yet to be copied. Their impact and influence can be heard in groups like Beastie Boys, No Doubt, Nirvana, Jane’s Addiction and countless more.

Despite the troubles of an eccentric front man they have stayed together for 30 years without ever reaching the level of success so many think they deserve.

Using rare archival footage and original comic illustrations the film re-constructs Bad Brains’ rich and complicated history

NEW JAMIE REID EXHIBITION

About the exhibition

In Jubilee June, Jamie Reid – the pioneering and world-renowned artist of punk art who put the safety pin into the Queen’s nose – is coming to Leeds, bringing his 40 year retrospective and current show “Ragged Kingdom” to Temple.Works.Leeds for the month of June 14-July 14. There will be sound and fury, art, punk, poets, food and drink inside a Grade One Listed building site.

While most notorious for his iconic work with the Sex Pistols, graphic artist Reid is as well known for his long career as the punchline in the side of capitalism, who still paints “damn them all” over the images of the Monarchy. Monday May 28th saw the re-release of God Save the Queen by the remaining Sex Pistols to coincide with the Diamond Jubilee. Jamie makes a much greater point about authority and its abuse especially in today’s political, economic and social climate.

Jamie comes to Temple. Works. Leeds

Since his first visit in the summer of 2009 Jamie has wanted to exhibit his work at Temple.Works.Leeds, the Grade One Listed Holbeck warehouse with its extreme vistas, both raw and figured, and its history at the heart of the second Industrial revolution.

Not for the faint of heart, it is the rough and raw areas where Jamie will install his work, with the collections spanning forty years and including Suburban Press, Sex Pistols, How To Become Invisible / Leaving The C20th, Strongroom and Afro Celt Soundsystem-related material, as well as work that is associated with Jamie’s current Eightfold Year project, the magnificent towering teepees.

And there’s more – Art, parties and events

We’ve a full line-up of events and parties to support the Ragged Kingdom exhibition – including Ragged Nights 3 weekend parties featuring punk & punk influenced bands on Friday June 15th and Saturday June 23rd

The first day of the festival, Friday 13th July, has a distinctly 80’s and classics theme this year.   Headed up by the legendary Jools Holland with his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, featuring vocal talent from Fine Young Cannibals frontman, Roland Gift; the day also has performances from ABC, Heaven 17, The Straits, newly confirmed The Doors Alive (easily the finest Doors tribute band around!), The South, (performing classic hits such as “A Little Time”) and cult punk band Buzzcocks

Saturday 14th July really is party day this year.  A superb mix of fantastic acts all over the festival, topped by the amazing Olly Murs headlining the Main Stage! The Good Time Guide stage on the other hand has more of a 90’s theme, with headliners Ash supported by Dodgy and The Wonderstuff (acoustic).

Elsewhere on the site throughout the weekend you can also catch a truly eclectic line up of StooShe, The Undertones, The Wurzels, The Beat, Kids In Glass Houses, Young Guns, Sub Focus (DJ set), Black Spiders, Rubberbandits, Benga, Friction, Levi Roots, Sigma, The Skints, Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer and even the fattest Take That tribute act around, Take Fat! Remember GuilFest is about so much more than just music!  With an amazing comedy line up in the eFestivals Cosmic Comedy Lounge, featuring Jarred Christmas, Mitch Benn and Simon Evans amongst scores of others; the brilliant Man in the Moon Theatre tent, with its biggest line up to date of everything from Cabaret to Shakespeare – as well as brilliant attractions such as The GuilFest Vintage Fayre, The Acoustic Lounge, La Discotheque, Farmer Giles Barndance, The Eden People’s GuilFest Gallery, and The Plantation Zone, and arts and craft exhibitions, food and drink from around the world, cocktail bars, real ale bars, boutique camping and a wonderfully relaxed family friendly vibe.
