After five years as a band, encompassing five EPs and two albums, Kent-based six-piece Tom Williams & the Boat might appear fully-formed but, with the release of their second album, ‘Teenage Blood’, they’re only just beginning to reveal their true colours.

Having made a name for themselves with early releases on independent UNLABEL and more recently, on their own label Wire Boat Records, the band’s profile has built steadily through this home-grown hard graft approach.

The vocal support of BBC Introducing’s Huw Stephens at this early stage lead to appearances at Latitude Festival, Radio 1’s Big Weekend, multiple slots at Glastonbury Festival as a result of its Emerging Talent Competition and a BBC Maida Vale Studio session, where they met their current producer Simon Askew.

Tom Williams & The Boat have created an album that cements their roots and embraces a new chapter in the band’s history. The independent release – ‘Teenage Blood’ is a co-release between Moshi Moshi and Wire Boat Records, funded entirely by their fans through Pledge Music – and its interaction with fans as well as Tom’s intuitive storytelling reflect what’s come to be expected of the band. But in a new-found love of classic pop structures and dark, heartbreaking narrative styles, there’s something entirely different about the album’s approach.

‘Teenage Blood’ is made up of ten tracks that Tom says reflect a new sense of focus for the band. After becoming obsessed with the idols of pop-rock’s history, such as Tom Petty, Teenage Fanclub, The Band and Loaded-era Velvet Underground, Tom decided to write songs that take the traditional song structures of that genre – repeated choruses, catchy hooks – and fill them with a subversive lyricism, touched upon in the debut release.

The result is a tight, narrative set of tracks that don’t so much form a concept as a series showing the progression of doomed love affairs – moving from youthful naïveté in ‘Too Young’ into ‘There’s A Stranger’s gut-punch realisation of the death of a romance (‘the best song I’ve ever written’, says Tom) and finally the ‘rolling credits’ of ‘Emily’, a depiction of the (re)birth of a new relationship. Teenage Blood’s consistent focus and narrative drive make for a more cohesive album than Too Slow; a mixture of the black and white polarity of their debut that explores new, captivating shades of grey – the spaces in between pop and alternative music, love and hate.

Tom Williams & The Boat’s spirit of independence, individuality and hard work drew celebrated indie label Moshi Moshi to the band. After seeing both their style of releasing and their constant interaction with their fans through social media sites, the label expressed an interest in not only releasing their second album, but in letting the band keep their sense of identity. Having worked with Summer Camp to release their debut through fan funding website PledgeMusic.com, Moshi Moshi saw an ideal opportunity to release The Boat’s second album whilst retaining the band’s personal touch. This has taken the form of a number of incentives offered for pledges towards the album’s creation, ranging from white label vinyl test pressings and unreleased demos to music lessons or even a painting by Tom (who has just completed a degree in Fine Art at Oxford). A portion of the money raised will be donated to the Kent Air Ambulance charity, an organisation particularly close to Tom’s heart and further validation of their independent standpoint.

The Living End rolled on in their usual raucous fashion with a couple of big ticket shows last month. First up was Launceston’s very popular inaugural Breath of Life Festival. The Living End lined up for day two of the festival in front of a huge crowd and pulled out their biggest festival guns. The month of March also yielded a live performance at Adelaide’s Clipsal 500 after race concert. Always a very packed, sweaty and exciting affair.

For now TLE are taking a rest from the road, with frontman Chris Cheney returned to Los Angeles where is he living at present. But fans shouldn’t be disheartened, TLE are cooking up something VERY exciting for 2012, we’ll be very pleased to announce what this is over the coming months.

Bow Wow Wow

Bow Wow Wow reunite for first UK tour in three decades

Former 1980s controversialists Annabella Lwin and Lee Gorman return for 12 UK shows this spring

Once upon a time, Bow Wow Wow were the very model of young controversialists. The cover of their improbably titled 1982 album See Jungle! See Jungle! Go Join Your Gang, Yeah. City All Over! Go Ape Crazy featured their 15-year-old singer Annabella Lwin in the nude, and they celebrated the home taping culture in C30, C60, C90, Go! Now, more than 30 years older – and possibly wiser – they are reforming for 12 UK shows this spring.

Lwin and bassist Lee Gorman are returning from their homes in LA to play their first proper shows since the early 1980s. They will be performing without the help of original drummer Dave Barbe or guitarist Matthew Ashman, who died in 1995. The group’s last British appearance was a one-off set in November 2010, when Lwin, Gorman and Barbe appeared at a tribute to Ashman in London.

While Bow Wow Wow have been largely absent from the UK, Lwin and Gorman have played several US concerts in recent years, usually on very small stages. Less than a fortnight ago, Lwin was singing for patrons of Fitzgeralds Irish pub in Huntington Beach, California.

Bow Wow Wow got their start in the early 80s. The instrumentalists were originally the Ants, of "Adam and" fame. But Malcolm McLaren pinched them, tacking on a new singer – Lwin, then 14, who he discovered at a launderette. Over a trio of albums, the band consistently courted controversy – trading on their borrowed Burundi beat, Lwin’s teenage sex appeal, and an endorsement of home taping. By the time Lwin was sacked in 1983, Bow Wow Wow had enjoyed five Top 50 singles in the UK, including the US crossover I Want Candy, a cover of a song by the Strangeloves.

Bow Wow Wow’s tour begins at the Brook in Southampton on 19 April.

So VIVE LE ROCK is stoked to having 999 play our VIVE LE PUNK N ROLL show on May 6th with the GRIT and RODDY RADIATION AND HIS SKABILLY REBELS.
“999 are very much looking forward to the Vive Le Punk n Roll show in May we always enjoy to play in front of an audience after 35 years together for sure yeah and we started off in London to boot.”

Any thoughts on a new album as its been a while since ‘Death In Soho’ in 2007?
“999 are currently writing songs and Overground Records who released ‘Death In Soho’ have said they want to do another 999 album. You are correct it was 2007 when we recorded that album, however we are still touring to promote it to this day.”

You guys came from Kilburn and the High Roads. What influences did you bring to 999?

“Kilburn And The Highroads had many influences as they had six members. The influences ranged from jazz – Ornette Coleman, Roland Kirk to rock ‘n’ roll – Freddie Cannon, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and even The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane – Alma Cogan.”

And it seemed 999 were set to break America in the 1980s? What happened?
“999 sold out 10,000 seater shows in LA and did 56 date tours of the USA – yeah we thought we might crack it but then we lost momentum due to contractual difficulties with managers and record labels.”

And finally, what have been some of the more crazy shows you have played over the years?

“The craziest show we ever played was in the former Yugoslavia when we had to perform in front of a circle of police including a chief inspector who wanted to make sure we were suitable to perform in front of the public there. We did some crazy dates in Portugal once when people actually came to see us travelling on donkeys and carts, but they were so into the music it was amazing.

“Cheers from 999 Nick, Guy Arturo and Pablo lookin’ forward to the show.”
