CAPTAIN SENSIBLE ANSWERS QUESTIONS ON THE SUBJECT OF THE 35TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR AND SURROUNDING TOPICS –
Q: Why have you chosen to perform “Damned, Damned, Damned” and “The Black Album” in their entirety?
A: For 35 years in this band of oddballs and eccentrics you deserve a medal…. and there were times when we lived life close to the edge. We are celebrating survival here (as a band AND as live human beings) as much as the music, but when it came to a setlist these two groundbreaking albums were the obvious choice.
Q: Has there been any problem rehearsing the songs or getting the tour together?
A: Ha ha, funny you should say that because as soon as we started rehearsing the Black Album material we realised what a job we had on our hands. In 3 years since New Rose kick started the UK punk scene we’d come a long way as songwriters and the likes of Curtain Call and Twisted Nerve still present quite a challenge….. especially if you want to stay faithful to the original.
As for the tour schedule, and being a bit more mature these days we are never going to hit the road for months on end like the glory years so apologies if we’re not playing everywhere people want us to.
Q: How does gigging them now differ from when you were originally promoting the albums?
A: On the 80s Black Album tour I seem to remember we dressed these three raunchy punkettes as dancing nuns for the original tour. Gyrating suggestively and occasionally flashing the audience – it gave the performances a theatrical edge that none of our contemporaries could compete with….. they were VERY naughty ladies – it was a VERY fun time for the band.
In Curtain Call’s autobiographical lyric Dave sings about a "reckless gambling pace" which is fair enough because we’d bet on absolutely anything….. from whether we could record a song in one take to the exact time the wheels of the plane would hit the ground. Some of the band made a few bob on this wheeze when we flew.
And we used to drink all day too back then, especially when travelling so gigs at that time could be quite variable depending on the state of the band when they turned up at the venue. These days it’s quality rather than quantity on the beverage front so performances are consistently much improved overall. And I enjoy the shows more knowing I’m playing the right chords. A couple of posh ales usually suffices
Plus I awake in the morning without a stinking hangover these days…… why didn’t somebody tell me?
HAZEL O’CONNOR JAZZ CAFÉ, LONDON SUNDAY 4TH DECEMBER 2011 “The expressive power of her singing, songwriting craft and warm strong personality” (The Times) Hazel O’Connor closes her current UK tour with a date at London’s Jazz Café on Sunday 4th December. The tour is in support of her brand new album, I Give You My Sunshine, an emotional tour de force. Here, Hazel’s unique voice delivers with a renewed passion and fire as she explores a stunning repertoire of old and new, alongside some superb cover versions. She is accompanied by virtuoso saxophonist Clare Hirst (The Belle Stars, Communards, David Bowie) on sax and vocals and the fabulous Sarah Fisher (Eurythmics, Sax in the City) on keyboards and vocals; this powerful blend of voices and musicianship lends a classy touch to Hazel’s vibrant performance. Together, the trio are touring throughout the UK album. “They were absolutely fantastic, bringing the entire audience roaring to its feet” (Daily Telegraph) The album’s moving title track describes the sunshine in her own heart, which was all and everything that Hazel could give to her mother as she drew to the end of her life in a hospice. Other highlights include other personal and new compositions; I Would Rather (Wonderwoman), The Very First Hello and Cinderella Moment about enjoying the company of friends and wondering whether or not to go home as the clock strikes midnight. There are also two songs from the Nina Simone songbook, Feeling Good and Do What You Gotta Do plus stunning new jazz-blues inspired versions of songs from Hazel’s own back catalogue, Decadent Days and That’s Life. Rebecca (on a close friend who died of cancer in her thirties) from the Beyond The Breaking Glass album is also given a new twist. In These Shoes is Hazel’s take on a song originally written by the late lamented Kirsty MacColl. Hazel, of course, is no stranger to the live scene ever since striding into the spotlight with the cult movie Breaking Glass in 1980. From her early tours in the 1980s to her critically acclaimed partnership with harpist Cormac De Barra; her autobiographical theatre shows Beyond Breaking Glass and the Breaking Glass Live tour, she has been continually performing and writing and delighting audiences the world over. HARDCORE PUNK LEGENDS!!!!!! CORROSION OF CONFORMITY SIGNS TO CANDLELIGHT RECORDS CORROSION OF CONFORMITY For Immediate Release October 31, 2011 CORROSION OF CONFORMITY SIGNS TO CANDLELIGHT RECORDS ALBUM PLANNED FOR EARLY 2012 RELEASE London: Candlelight Records today proudly announces the worldwide signing of Corrosion of Conformity. Since early this year, the band – featuring the esteemed Animosity line-up of vocalist/bassist Mike Dean, guitarist Woody Weatherman, and drummer/vocalist Reed Mullin - has been working with long-time producer John Custer. Now nearly complete, their still untitled eighth studio album is planned for release early in the new year. Gathering last summer to jam as a trio for the first time in over a decade, the treasured threesome quickly rekindled the magic that originally united and ultimately bound the musicians on a journey that today continues to impress both fans and critics. It is the efforts of this line-up that Decibel Magazine recently called “a crucial stylistic lynchpin in the bridge between metal and punk. Corrosion of Conformity irrevocably reshaped crossover’s sonic possibilities.” AllMusic.com notes, ”C.O.C. weren’t following any trends. They just incorporated all the things they liked about thrash, punk and ’70s metal originators Black Sabbath into their constantly evolving sound. It secured them artistic and commercial credibility.” Candlelight’s Steve Beatty says of the signing, “Animosity is one of my favourite records ever. To have C.O.C. on Candlelight with that line-up is simply mouth watering. I saw the band in London recently and they did not disappoint. This hungry child can’t wait for the record.” Candlelight’s Edward Christie adds, “we are extremely excited to welcome the band to the label and are looking forward to an amazing album. We are all huge fans and this is truly a memorable day for all of us.” The band shares the excitement the immediate future holds. Woody Weatherman comments, "writing and recording this new record as a three-piece has been a blast. Having Reed back in the fold with Mike and I brings it around full circle. I'm really looking forward to all that lies ahead this upcoming year." Reed Mullen adds, “Mike, Woody and I essentially learned how to play music together and cultivated our own style, sound, and unspoken language. Re-bonding with them musically has been the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me.” In addition to intense work on the album, Corrosion of Conformity has kept busy in 2011 touring throughout the US and abroad. One of the main attractions at this year’s Maryland Death Festival, the band mesmerized a salivating capacity audience. Sean Palmerston, editor for Canada’s online magazine Hellbound, said, “I lapped this set up. It was like the tastiest comfort food after a hard day’s work. I haven’t listened to those classic C.O.C. albums in a long, long time. It put a smile on my face.” Mike Dean says of the new songs, “we have been overdubbing vocals and guitars in between our live dates for the better part of a year. Now it's time to mix. The process we started back in April is finally coming to fruition. The results should reflect all eras of the band's existence filtered through our current reality. This is a beast we can't wait to set free." Formed in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1982, Corrosion of Conformity quickly transformed heavy music. Politically charged and socially aware, the band has influenced countless others and today remains humble about their accomplishments. With over 1.1 million albums sold in the United States alone, the new album will be their first since 2005’s In the Arms of God. On release, Billboard Magazine called the album a “riff-fueled set that ranks with (the band’s) best work.” Corrosion of Conformity will perform with Danzig tonight at the Gibson Ampitheater in Los Angeles. The band’s final performances for 2011 will be alongside Clutch December 27 through 31. Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster and venue box offices. 12/27 – House of Blues, Boston MA 12/28 – State Theater, Portland ME 12/29 – Westcott Theater, Syracuse NY 12/30 – Starland Ballroom, Sayreville NJ 12/31 – Trocadero Theater, Philadelphia PA

Drummer of Christchurch punk band The Androidss, Eric Marsden sadly passed away earlier this week.
The Andoidss were active during the period 1979-83 – they were comprised of twins Eric and Steve Marsden; brothers Neil and Mark Spence; Frankie Steentjes and Mark Wilson.
They were most famous for their anthemic Auckland Tonight single. Sadly, they only ever released one double A side single Auckland Tonight / Getting Jumpy on Ripper Records – which went to number 18 in the NZ Charts – back in the days when charts were based on record sales not the number of times a radio programmer on a mainstream radio station played the latest single by the latest TV game show sensation.
Eric’s twin brother Steve passed away in April 2009.
They even had a music video. Not many bands had music videos back then…
