The Big Stiff Box Set (4CD Box Set)

Format: CD
Cat. No.: SALVOBX402
Barcode: 698458840325
Playing Time: Over 4 Hours

This is the ultimate anthology of Stiff Records, charting 30 years of one
of the most daring and influential labels in UK pop history. A celebration
of Stiff `The World’s Most Flexible label’ across 98 tracks , from number
one hits to rare curiosities, and a 68 page full colour booklet.

REVIEWS:

Stiff Records will go down in history as the most important UK independent
label ever. During its thirty years the Stiff staff have released some of
the most legendary punk and new wave records of all time, covering every
cool musical revolution first and with style. This is a hundred track
slice of punk and new wave history, complete with 68 page book. "If it
ain’t Stiff it ain’t worth a f*ck!"

4 Stars [ El Prez – Big Cheese]

It is a boxed set to live with. This immense collection spans three
decades, concluding with 2007 curiosities such as the Trevor Horn, Lol
Creme and Chris Braide collective The Producers, Stiff Records will
forever remain evocative of pre and post-punk innocence. Songs from this
era sparkle and it’s inspiring to be reacquainted with Lowe’s ’Heart Of
The City’ and Larry Wallis’ ’Police Car’. Punk wades in thrillingly with
the classic opening shots from the Damned’s ’New Rose’ and ’Neat Neat
Neat’, both of which still catch the heart and hurtle you towards a whole
new attitude. It is the crazed underbelly acts Pointed Sticks, Jane Aire &
the Belvederes, Passion Puppets and even dear old Max Wall who add exotic
elements to the legacy of this most beloved of record labels. 4 Stars
[Mick Middles – Rock N Reel]

"Essential punk and new wave box set" Recently reactivated with their
latest signings The Tranzmitors and The Producers (included here), this is
a hundred track slice of punk and new wave history, complete with 68 page
book. [4 Stars, El Pres – Vive Le Punk Website]

This is a comprehensive, overview of the ground breaking stiff label,
covering its entire 30-year history, from early pioneers like Elvis
Costello and Nick Lowe to contemporary hit makers The Enemy. [Music Week]

You can’t really argue with four discs that provide some of the catchiest
indie tunes of the late 70s/early 80s and are following up that legacy
with newbies very much in the mould of the golden oldies. [4 stars, Jenni
Cole – OMH]

Not a greatest hits, this comp revels in Stiff’s eclecticism; the cult
delights of Department S and The Untouchables providing frantic high
points. [Jon Harrington, MOJO]

How’s this for a roster: The Damned, The Pogues, Elvis Costello and
music-hall legend Max wall? Between 1976 and 1987 Stiff Records were, if
nothing else, eclectic, as this chunky box (four discs and a book)
demonstrates. Like its 1981 Tenpole Tudor hit, simply Wunderbar. [4 stars,
Simon Goddard, Q]

We’re sold on this just for Max Walls Englands glory. Oh, you’re looking
for guitar highlights? How about Motorheads hard-rocking White Line Fever
or the bittersweet 50s throwback lead lines on Alvin Stardusts Pretend?
This box set proves that the UKs anarchic Stiff label brought us the great
(Nick Lowe), the even-more-great (Elvis Costello) and some right old
cheese (Dave Stuart and Barbara Gaskin). Gawd bless em. [Guitar Mag]

WOLFMEN XMAS SINGLE

:Lets make the Wolfmens new single the Christmas number one!!!

“For thirty years Fairytale of New York has dominated the Christmas playlists and festive radio for anyone looking for hardcore
Christmas whimsey. But Jackie, is it my Birthday? is a worthy contender to The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl’s throne. It’s like the sequel that never was, with all the Dickensian swagger and spine-tingling Irish atmosphere you’d expect.”

Cadiz Music ( Tini Tempeh/Madness/Wilko etc label and makers of Oil City Confidential ) are releasing The Wolfmen’s "Jackie, is it My Birthday? featuring Sinéad O’Connor " on 5th dec as a christmas single ….

THE WOLFMEN feat. SINÉAD O’CONNOR:

JACKIE, IS IT MY BIRTHDAY?

Artist: The Wolfmen feat. Sinead O’Connor
Title: Jackie, is it my Birthday?
Release date : 5th dec
Label: CADIZ

Track: Jackie, is it my Birthday?

The Wolfmen are back, and this time they’re armed and dangerous…
Jackie, is it my birthday? is a brand new, spine-tingling duet between Sinéad O’Connor and Chris Constantinou of The Wolfmen.
It’s also the biggest, grittiest ballad you’ll hear this year and has already received radio support from Chris Hawkins , Lauren Laverne, Gary Crowley and David Quantick.

A-listed on NME Radio six weeks running in January for Cecilie from their debut album, this is the christmas release from The Wolfmen’s prolific 2010 sessions with The Dandy WarholsCourtney Taylor-Taylor in the producer’s chair.

The Wolfmen is the brainchild of Marco Pirroni (Siouxsie & The Banshees/Adam & The Ants) and Chris Constantinou (Adam Ant/Annebella Lwin/JackieOnAssid) and also features percussion Zelig Preston Heyman (Massive Attack, Kate Bush). As FHM says, “There’d be no Sugar Ray, Nine Inch Nails or Robbie Williams without these boys.”
Or as Courtney Taylor-Taylor says of his new charges, “These guys are f*cking brilliant… I guess The Wolfmen just sound like heavy weights because they are.“ and

ROLLING STONE

devotes half a page to the single, declaring it “A spunky mix… Jackie breezes through with it’s uplifting swirl. Great production and a sweeping string set sustained through the track, the song’s rock rage is wrapped in an ethereal halo.”

A brand new album will follow in the new year.

See Below for early support… As one blogger writes, “For thirty years Fairytale of New York has dominated the Christmas playlists and festive radio for anyone looking for hardcore
Christmas whimsey. But Jackie, is it my Birthday? is a worthy contender to The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl’s throne. It’s like the sequel that never was, with all the Dickensian swagger and spine-tingling Irish atmosphere you’d expect.”

Sat 19 Nov UK London – O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire (with The Cravats)

  • UK tickets: http://bit.ly/fZfX49

In 1977, Steve Ignorant and Penny Rimbaud founded Crass.

    In 1984 Crass disbanded.

In 2007, as a personal tribute to Crass, Steve Ignorant performed a show at Shepherds Bush Empire called ‘The Feeding Of The Five Thousand’, a celebration of the Crass album of the same name, which was performed in its entirety.  Answering the calls that have come from around the globe in response to the Shepherd’s Bush gigs Steve Ignorant has been touring ‘The Last Supper’ across the UK, Europe, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand to rapturous audiences, celebrating the period of Crass’ work with which he feels most closely aligned – the period when he feels the band were at the strongest, most productive and most hopeful.

In November 2011 Steve Ignorant and his merry band of musicians comprising Gizz Butt (guitar), Pete Wilson (bass), Spike T Smith (drums) and Carol Hodge (vocals) will be performing the Last Supper for the last time, deliberately and significantly to be held once again at the 02 Shepherds Bush Empire.

This will doubtless be the last time any member of Crass will play these songs live again. Ever.

Wire Bio Top

Since their formation in London in 1976, the members of Wire have maintained and advanced a musical project which treats the creative potential of a rock band as a fluid, amorphous medium. As removed from selfconscious intellectualism as they are from the inherent conservatism of much rock music, Wire employ their unique, endlessly restless and risktaking creativity to question every aspect of songwriting, recording and performance.
