With sadness, we can now confirm rumors of the passing of Poly Styrene, punk rock icon & lead singer of U.K. band X-Ray Spex. According to a posting on her official Facebook page by her long-time friend Symond Lawes, “i just spoke to her mother and its very true, she passed away quietly last night, her mother and daughter were with her, bless you marianne. symond xxx”. She was 54.

Often considered the original “riot grrrl” (stemming from her band’s first 1977 single, “Oh Bondage, Up Yours!”), her musical evolution found her wavering between the proto-punk that she pioneered, jazzy experimentation and, more recently, daring power pop and electro-punk. The artists she has influenced reference a who’s who of popular music over the past 30 years — most recently, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Santigold and The Gossip count among them.

Aside from her status as a punk rock icon, Poly Styrene (born Marian Joan Elliott-Said) had long been an outspoken counterculture figure, willing to engage in protest to make her point & was a tireless advocate for the rights of women. Never one to consider herself a protest singer, Styrene simply wanted to make a difference in the world. “You don’t think you’re doing anything groundbreaking,” she recently told Sinead Gleeson in an interview. “I just made music because I wanted to put good energy out there. I was young and optimistic and you feel you can do anything. Once I got beer thrown over me, but mostly we had really lovely audiences. No one knew us when we started out but then we built up this following of loyal fans. I loved it.”

In recent times, Poly partnered with producer Youth of Killing Joke to create a new album, Generation Indigo (which was officially released stateside today, 26 April).

A stop-over is also arranged in the recently re-opened Albany Pub on Albany Road. For Jones, this reunion represents unfinished business; carrying on the creative spirit of the Clash, whose frontman Joe Strummer co-wrote and
produced B.A.D¹s second album ŒNo. 10 Upping Street¹. The album is scheduled for a deluxe re-issue this year and will include several previously unreleased Strummer/Jones songs.

Iggy Pop has joined pop muppet Ke$ha for ‘Canada’s Club Scene Sucks’ PETA ad targeting the seal slaughter in eastern Canada.

The campaign aims to combat the Canadian government’s attempts to market baby seal fur internationally in order to prop up the dying seal fur trade. "Clubbing baby seals is sick and gives Canada a black eye", says Iggy . "Don’t let the greed of a few tarnish the image of the whole country."

There’s also a video interview with Iggy about the campaign HERE (warning – it’s pretty unpleasant viewing).

THE CUTE LEPERS ADVENTURE TIME (Damaged Goods Records) Since their arrival on the scene in 2007, they’ve toured the US and Europe extensively, released two critically acclaimed LP’s (“Can’t Stand Modern Music” & “Smart Accessories”), as well as numerous limited 7” singles, most of which have been on trademark coloured vinyl! With their Motown-esque girl pop harmonies and dance moves,  flipped fingers to what’s supposedly hip and happening, and love of the Rolling Stones, they have distilled their influences to create something exceptionally fresh, rude and absolutely worthy of damaging your ears. The new album Adventure Time is due for an April 18th release , and is a continuation of where they left off: striving for a killer pop song while keeping both feet ankle deep in the dirt of first wave punk. Three LP’s in, the Cute Lepers continue to enjoy playing shows around the world,  meeting new cool people and hanging out with old friends.  As well as bonafide heroes of ours that we get to talk about guitars and various stupid to absurd topics with… and then watch them tear it up on stage.  Actually, I think we’re in it for the gigs with the Adicts and The Boys and the Swinging Utters and the UK Subs and the Buzzcocks when you get down to it.  Really really love punk rock, want to contribute, and want to be where the action is! –Steve E. Nix See The band live at the following dates: May 3rd Hope & Anchor – London May 4th Bristol May 5th Old Bell – Derby May 6th Night & Day Café – Manchester May 7th Bannermans – Edinburgh May 8th  The Lamo – Hull

Poly Styrene New album ‘Generation Indigo’ out now Announces limited coloured vinyl release for Record Store Day “A record both defiant and full of grace” NME 7/10 “Terrific solo recordPoly Styrene shines brighter than ever” Telegraph 4**** “A fizzy, funny triumph” Uncut “Return to form” The Sun “a Technicolour blend of electrified electropop, disco, rock & reggaeflavoursome treat” Q “brilliant satirist of consumer culture.a provocative comeback” Mojo “A damned good record” Record Collector “Continues to be an inspiration” i-D “‘Generation Indigo’ reveals Poly Styrene to be as politically and culturally engaged as ever” Artrocker 5***** “Hugely enjoyable album” Independent on Sunday “an atom-sharp array of digital dance rock, reggae” Spin 8/10 After releasing her first proper solo album Generation Indigo in 30 years to rave reviews, Poly Styrene – the unforgettable frontwoman and iconic face of the seminal band X-ray Spex – has announced she will be releasing a limited edition coloured vinyl in honour of Record Store Day. The single ‘Virtual Boyfriend’ will be released as an individually numbered red 10” vinyl, limited to 300 copies and exclusively available for Record Store Day ‘Virtual Boyfriend’ highlights Poly’s talent for mighty, power-pop melodies. The upbeat tempo and bouncing synths make the track perfect for the indie/electro dancefloor and are offset by tongue in cheek lyrics: “You’re like a MySpace friend, that’s all / Just a text or a missed call / I never knew but I lost control / That you loved your Blackberry phone”. The B-side features a remix from red-hot Brooklyn female production duo CREEP, who twist the track into a deep, brooding spaced out version that builds hypnotically with cinematic strings and sparse echoing beats. ‘Generation Indigo’ – out now on Future Noise Music – is a remarkable showcase of how Poly’s never-failing ability to connect with her audience keeps her as relevant as ever, and her contemporary sound cements her as a pioneer of cutting-edge alternative pop.

Devo offer Charlie Sheen a position in the band

Gerald Casale from Devo wants Charlie Sheen to join his band.

In an interview with Gordon Downs from Casale explained that Devo rarely tour because of founding member Mark Mothersbaugh’s reluctance to go out on the road but he would love to get Charlie Sheen in the band.

‘Would you take this moment and officially extend an invitation to Charlie Sheen to become a member of Devo and go on this upcoming tour?’ Downs asked Casale.

”We’d be honored. Any of our songs that he wanted to sing,’ Casale answered. ‘Well actually now I realize what I have to do today, which is since Mark doesn’t want to tour, I need to ask Charlie Sheen if he’d be our lead singer.’

Casale sounds like a huge Charlie Sheen fan. ‘This guy’s brilliant, he’s a philosopher of our devolved culture,’ he said. ‘He impresses me with the shit he says, it’s unbelievable>’
