SEX PISTOLS - THERE'LL ALWAYS BE AN ENGLAND BLU-RAY OUT JUNE 13TH. "Hello London, how the fuck are you?" (Johnny Rotten) It was one of the most important reunions in rock and roll history: The Sex Pistols took on the Brixton Academy in monumental style in November 2007 to mark their 30th Anniversary and announce the return of - to quote Sir Cliff Richard - "the worst thing ever to happen to rock n roll." The release of this amazing performance will not disappoint fans, as the Pistol's bone crunching performance is made sharper and clearer and louder than ever before, thanks to the amazing high audio and visual definition that Blu-ray delivers. The venue is packed with Anarchists in the UK, both on-stage and in the audience, all determined to go wild and stick two fingers up at everyone, not least themselves. The legendary line-up may be older, (possibly) wiser and certainly fatter than before but their delivery is charged with energy and humour: "I started out this evening fat but I've just lost 15 fucking pounds" Johnny Rotten at his worst! The Blu-ray features the gig in 77 minutes of madness together with over 90 minutes of bonus features, including the tour of 'The Sex Pistol's London', in which the band visit places and venues that shaped punk, with amazing archive footage and interviews. Film maker Julien Temple, whose credits include, 'The Filth And The Fury' and 'Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten', said: "This is about the unique electricity between the Sex Pistols and their audience. The amazing cross section of the crowd at a Pistols gig is like no other, and the Brixton shows brought the band to a whole new generation as well as to those that have been there from the very beginning. There'll Always Be An England documents a unique band in every sense." There'll Always Be An England (Track listing) 1. Pretty Vacant 2. Seventeen 3. No Feelings 4. New York 5. Did You No Wrong 6. With the release of her eagerly anticipated solo album ‘Generation Indigo’ fast approaching (due March 28th), Poly Styrene – the unforgettable frontwoman and iconic face of the seminal band X-ray Spex – has announced her new single ‘Virtual Boyfriend’.
‘Virtual Boyfriend’ will be released through Future Noise Music on March 21st and highlights Poly’s talent for mighty, power-pop melodies. The upbeat tempo and bouncing synths are offset by tongue in cheek lyrics: “You’re like a MySpace friend, that’s all / Just a text or a missed call / I never knew but I lost control / That you loved your Blackberry phone”.
The forthcoming single is a remarkable example of how Poly’s never-failing ability to connect with her audience keeps her as relevant as ever, and her contemporary sound cements her as a pioneer of cutting-edge alternative pop.
Produced by Youth (The Verve, Killing Joke, The Fireman, Edwyn Collins), ‘Generation Indigo’ showcases Poly’s humorous musings on pop culture, the internet and fashion whilst also tackling heavier subject matter (war and racism) with her politically aware and intelligent lyrics. The album isn’t just power-pop though, it takes in everything from neo-X-ray Spex punk rock on ‘Thrash City’ and ‘L.U.V’ to the Trojan-reggae infused grooves of ‘No Rockefeller’, ‘Code Pink Dub’ and ‘Colour Blind’ whilst one of the stand out songs, ‘White Gold’ attests to the power of Poly’s soaring vocals.
X-ray Spex may have only been around for a couple of years but their star shone brightly. Poly Styrene’s return is highly anticipated, she remains a genuine icon and one of the premier influences on the Riot Grrrl and Britpop scenes. Currently, a new set of young American bands like the Yeah Yeahs Yeahs and The Gossip and countless others recognise her fiery, irrepressible presence. With her great self-styled image, brilliantly sharp lyrics and powerful presence, Poly’s indomitable spirit still inspires.
After reforming the band for a one off show at The Roundhouse, Camden in 2008, Poly was persuaded to start writing a solo album. Armed with a record’s worth of songs, Poly met Youth who added his own epic style to the tracks. The resulting LP ‘Generation Indigo’ is a fantastic return to form for Poly and a welcome comeback for her fans.

THE URBAN VOODOO MACHINE IN BLACK 'N' RED - OUT 2ND MAY 2011 + LIVE DATES - MAY 2011 With the release of their brand new album, In Black ?N? Red on 2nd May, coinciding their UK tour, The Urban Voodoo Machine looks set to conquer the country with their unique brand of sleaze-tinged, dark-edged, rockabilly-flavoured, gypsy blues and folk-punk ? or Bourbon Soaked Gypsy Blues Bop'n'Stroll as the group like to call it! So far the UK tour takes in dates in London, Brighton, Belfast, Glasgow, Birmingham, York and Leamington Spa (confirmed dates listed below). ?Using horns, violin, accordion, banjo and multiple percussionists, the band veers into mariachi-influenced blues, whiskey-soaked country rags and punkabilly-style rave-ups.? (The Washington Post) From the gypsy skiffle bop of opener Go East to the boogie woogie attack of Cheers For The Tears (inspired by the true story of P-R Angel?s supposed death!) to the psycho-lover anthem, Rather You Shot Me Down to the stomping Balkan vibe of the album?s first single, Goodbye To Another Year, In Black ?N? Red is another riotous masterpiece from The Urban Voodoo Machine. 2011 looks to be the best year yet for the black-suited, red-shirted, London-based collective who recently received a nomination for the ?Best New Band? award by Classic Rock magazine. For In Black ?N? Red, The UVM once again hooked up with producer Alex McGowan in his Space Eko Studios in London ? as McGowan produced the band?s stunning debut, Bourbon Soaked Gypsy Blues Bop ?n? Stroll it was an easy decision to make. Led by the darkly charismatic, Norwegian-born Paul-Ronney Angel, The Urban Voodoo Machine is a supremely talented collective of London-based musicians who have been bringing the spirit of the carnie to an ever-growing audience of dedicated fans these past few years. Of the new album Paul-Ronney Angel says: ?There are some new sounds and instrumentation since the last album. I?ve dabbled in both bouzouki and mandolin and we?ve had people swinging by to play everything from tuba to cello. We always have a party onstage and our albums reflect that too: joining the party in the studio this time were, amongst others Sami Yaffa (Mad Juana/New York Dolls), Adrian Stout (The Tigerlilies), harmonica god, Son of Dave and, of course, founding member/former UVM drummer Jim Jones (The Jim Jones Revue).? ?The U.V.M. rise above the mere cabaret, by simply being very, very good? (Q) Although officially a 9-piece, The Urban Voodoo Machine?s live shows can sometimes feature up to 12 people on stage. The group play a colourful array of instruments including guitars, drums, fiddle, trumpet, banjo, washboard, upright bass, gong, mandolin, accordion, harmonica, saxophone, tuba, sousaphone and even empty bottles and tie racks to build their own unique and infectious sound. It is this sound that has seen the group invited to play at festivals throughout the UK and abroad including Glastonbury, Download, Hard Rock Calling and Latitude and led to support slots with The Pogues, The New York Dolls, Goran Bregović and Paul McCartney. Revered by London?s underground cabaret scene, The Urban Voodoo Machine started up the legendary, alternative, monthly club night, Gypsy Hotel in October 2006: the massively popular night is still going strong and a couple of times a year the group headlines and sells out this exciting and eclectic rock ?n? roll cabaret. ??a hellacious swing that causes dames to sway and dudes to drink!? (Big Cheese) Anyone who has not yet discovered the arresting charms of The Urban Voodoo Machine is simply urged to do so now?? with the release of their second album, In Black ?N? After 43 years of honing his craft, Brian is releasing his first all-instrumental album showcasing what has made him one of the most legendary and credible artist in music today. He is universally respected by his peers and some are even calling him the greatest living guitar player today. We stand behind their claims with Setzer Goes Instru- Mental! Setzer Goes Instru-MENTAL! is another elegant affirmation of Setzer¹s legacy and a beautiful betrayal of what we tend to expect from guitar records. Betrayal? Ok, look let¹s admit something. Even people who buy guitar records made by guys who make guitar records for people who buy guitar records know that guitar records are often not all that much fun when you boil them down. Usually there¹s a certain quota of ³see, I can do this² fretboard pyrotechnics, a few ³exercise in getting a certain guitar tone² kinds of exotic moves and then the inevitably boring retread of some song snatched from a different genre. As a guitarist, Setzer has basically nothing whatsoever to prove, so Instru-MENTAL! skips all of those games. Instead, it¹s a richly lyrical spin through songs where Setzer (as usual) makes complex guitar figures sound organic with a delivery that¹s alarmingly effortless. If anything, its instrumental-ness was something that revealed itself along the way. ³I didn¹t start writing an instrumental record per se,² Setzer says. ³As a matter of fact I wrote 7 songs with lyrics and then all of a sudden I just took a turn and started fooling around with ŒBlue Moon of Kentucky,¹ except without any vocals. I just started playing melody chords and thought, Œwow, this is pretty cool! So the direction turned about halfway through my writing. I had never done an instrumental record, but I thought, well, now¹s the time!² The result is a record that feels like a Sunday afternoon with one of the world¹s best players of any given instrument fumbling around the living room, picking up a dazzling vintage ¹63 D¹Angelico acoustic guitar, a Scruggs banjo or a signature Gretsch and with a quick knot of knuckle-work chiming out one gorgeous piece after another. There are charming covers in ³Blue Moon of Kentucky² and ³Cherokee² alongside ripping originals like ³Go-Go Godzilla.² As always, it¹s the kind of stuff that he can hurtle outward as far as the room allows music that¹s equally at home in the low fog of a smoky jazz club, the chandelier pomp of a big city ball-room or the crisp zing of a festival night sky air. It¹s music made with real love by a guy who just can¹t help but grab a guitar. Taken as a whole, Instru-MENTAL! is a kind of a hot quickie Cliff Notes on the thing that is the Brian Setzer canon. There¹s jazz without pretension, country without cowshit, swing without poses, an infusion of blues that is deeply honest and the most classic form of rock n¹ roll that in Brian¹s hands feels as fresh and vital as the day those other genres slopped it into being. Some of Setzer¹s secret is his inherent understanding of the deep soul-level link between Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Joe Strummer, Jimmy Page, Cliff Gallup, Son House, Chet Atkins, Elvis Perkins, Elvis Costello, Charlie Christian, Les Paul, Johnny Marr and Johnny Rotten. Some of Setzer¹s magic is the fact that he¹s the guitar-toting lightning rod who soaked all that in and shoots it back at us in dazzling bolts that carry his own unique signature in every note. He¹s Brian Setzer, he plays a mean hot crazy pretty guitar, and that, thank God, will never change. UK Tour Dates: July 24 @ London, UK - London Brixton Academy July 25 @ Manchester, UK - Manchester Academy July 27 @ Dublin, Ireland - Vicar Street

SMILEY CULTURE DEAD
Few people are surprised any more by a reggae artist’s untimely death, not even when it is as bizarre as Smiley Culture‘s seems to be. My biggest fear is that this icon of British reggae rap will end up as a mere footnote in the annals of rock’n’roll.
Say Smiley Culture and pop pickers of a certain age will go, "Wasn’t he the one-hit wonder who did that record Police Officer? My kids love it and so does my mother …"
They don’t know the half of it.
At the time – 1984 – being pulled over and being issued with the ignominious "producer" (a notice to produce driving documents at a police station within seven days) was a recreational hazard for young black drivers like me in flash cars. It was one of the many issues that made us feel immigrant.
Smiley’s Police Officer made us all see the funny side of it. Cause he was the cheeky chappie from south London who told it like it would have been if Cheech & Chong had written the script. And the punchline when it comes is what we all wish would be the outcome whenever the cops pull us over.
But that’s not all. I’d go as far as to say that through his musical slapstick, Smiley made it OK for guys like me to chat cockney without being regarded as "coconuts", and for white guys to speak "yardie" without being regarded as wiggers – or, worse, Jim Davidson.
Smiley’s first and best hit Cockney Translation with its classic line, "Cockney have names like Terry, Arthur and Del Boy / We have names like Winston, Lloyd and Leroy" stopped you dead in your tracks at the very moment when black Britons were wrestling with the Tebbit acid test.
I didn’t realise that I could support England and the West Indies until I heard it. Because 25 years ago black guys were still struggling to get into a lot of the white clubs – which were of course playing black music. Our parents stood up to this discrimination by building mobile discos called sounds or sound systems, playing tunes from "back-a-yard".
My pioneering generation of black Britons wanted our own MCs, just as lovers rock a few years before had given us our own reggae singers. Out of that grew a much more vibrant and entertaining expression of second-generation black Britons based around the Saxon Sound System in Smiley’s end of southeast London.
It was at a Saxon dance in Deptford in 1984 or 1985 that I first saw Smiley perform his cockney anthem. And you know, for the first time in my life I relished in being black and British … and was proud of it. And it wasn’t just me. I could see the same feeling in the 500 or so other youngsters in the place.
Above all Smiley Culture made us laugh. Together. Because white guys could see the funny side of it, too. And in just the same way that 2-Tone made a lot of white guys realise that black guys were OK, Smiley Culture and Saxon Sound made a lot of black guys feel that white guys weren’t too bad either.
If Smiley hadn’t made it cool for black Brits to chat "British" on record UK rappers would probably still be chatting "yankee" and there would have been no UK vocal flava to drum and bass, two step, dub step or grime. There would be no Dizzie or Tinie Tempah.
And if Smiley had been born a generation later he would have probably been picking up all those gongs at the Brits as well. But I fear that Smiley’s story, like the story of the many pioneers of the first generation of black Britons (the second generation of "black immigrant" to Britain) will never be properly told because our revolution in this country was never televised.

Rmours reaching us say Adam Ant will play 2 London shows in May-he will then head to America. He is in discussion with various major labels about his album release. Read all about Adam in current issue of Vive Le Rock.
Kevin Spacey, Academy-Award winning actor, and artistic director of London¹s Old Vic Theatre, has made an official statement today about the New York Dolls playing the Old Vic Theatre¹s sister venue the Old Vic Tunnels Club on March 30-31st. “I’m excited that the Old Vic Tunnels are becoming a cool new scene for live performance,² says Spacey. ³The New York Dolls inspired the punk movement, so they are the perfect fit of glam and anarchy to launch our live music series under Waterloo Station. In addition, a new rock band called The Shoestrung will open both shows, who are also worth checking out.² The Dolls recently confirmed two exclusive London concerts at the historic Old Vic Tunnels; a unique venue situated underneath Waterloo train station in a network of Victorian red brick tunnels. The shows take place on Wednesday 30th March and Thursday March 31st. Tickets are available from 0844 871 7628 and can be booked online from www.mofman.com. The London concerts dovetail the Dolls¹ new studio album ŒDancing Backward in High Heels¹, which is released in the UK today. The Dolls also play the O2 Academy Newcastle (March 27th) and Manchester Club Academy (March 29th). Guitarist Earl Slick, best known for his guitar playing on David Bowie’s albums ³David Live² (1974), ³Young Americans² (1975) and ³Station To Station² (1976), joins as the Dolls¹ as their new guitarist on the UK tour.
After a year full of European shows and about to embark on a U.S. tour, the Barcelona duo has recorded 46 minutes of music where all styles are mixed and corrupt, to end up creating a new compact sound, experimental yet euphoric. Futuristic primitivism, Post-World Music… MEGAFLOW.
A traveling circus from Barcelona. Two guys and a dozen instruments. Za! are: PAPA DUPAU (guitar, trumpet, kalimba, percussions, vocals) and SPAZZFRICA EHD (drums, percussions, keys, effects, clarinet, vocals). This multilayer supersonic-orchestra combines African beats, noise, math rock, vocal-loops, free jazz, analogue electronics, sounds from the Shepherds of Tuva, Balinese polyrhythms, Mauritanian trip hop, Dadaism, distortion, dance and drones. POST-WORLD MUSIC may be the label for this danceable hybrid.
Megaflow is Za!’s new album, the product an intense and exhilarating year in their lives. The result, recorded by Santi García and mastered by Jeff Lipton (Battles, Arcade Fire, Lightning Bolt), and co-edited internationally by Acuarela, Gandula and German label Discorporate (on vinyl), is even more risky than their acclaimed Macumba o Muerte (rated as one of the best albums of the XXI century by ROCKDELUX, the best Spanish indie magazine, and awarded best urban music album of 2009 by the Spanish Independent Labels Union) but also strangely uplifting and bright.
An amazing album with an amazing artwork (each song has a miniature landscape as a map). A whirlwind of colours. Virtuosic euphoria. Living intuition. Musical explosion. Coltrane, Africa, Asia, Fugazi, Tortoise, Ruins, Stravinsky, Battles… sequenced improvisation, the recreation of an Arab market, guitar solos from Purgatory or the superposition of a hundred voices screaming at unison. 46 minutes that make you dizzy at its first hearing, where experimental music is sung in hooligan mode, the noise has chorus, and world music is played with distortions and through amplifiers.
Za! have played international festivals (Primavera Sound, Sonar), art performances, tours in the U.K., U.S., Spain, Portugal and Germany.
