Cause of Death
Scratch passed away after a long battle with an unspecified illness.
Fear (Bass, Saxophone & Vocals)
Derf "Fred" Scratch was best known as the original, founding member and bass guitarist of the legendary punk rock band FEAR. Scratch played bass for FEAR from 1977-1982.
The sign that honors rock legend Joey Ramone in Manhattan could be New York City’s most frequently stolen street sign. Officials say that the city has had to replace the sign numerous times since it was first put up.
According to Billboard.com, The Department of Transportation has just replaced the “Joey Ramone Place” sign for the fourth time since 2003. This time, it was raised eight feet to place it out of thieves’ reach. The sign, located at the corner of Bowery and East Second Street, is now about 20 feet above the ground.
Ramones drummer Marky Ramone thinks that Joey would enjoy the distinction of having the most-stolen street sign. However, because of the sign’s new height, Marky said, “Now you have to be an NBA player to see it.”
DOT officials said the Ramone sign isn’t the only one that’s popular to pilfer. Broadway, Wall Street and Love Lane markers each attract their share of thieves.

After moving to London, a combination of serendipity and sordid late-night drinking sessions soon brought him into contact with exactly the sort of likeminded and talented musicians who could make his idea’s become a reality: ‘Drink has often given me the courage to pursue my many day dreams, some with positive results, others less so. OK rockers, lots happening now. I'm awake after sleeping off August, and here's what we got. First off, The Cheetah Chrome bio, "A Dead Boy's Tale" is in stock, our copies are autographed. I have just 100 copies, so this won't last. Here is the no-holds-barred autobiography of Cheetah Chrome, lead guitarist of Rocket From The Tombs, Batusis, and the Dead Boys, one of the greatest punk bands ever. It's a tale of success and excess--amazing music, legendary antics, epic drug use, and eventual resurrection--that only a true rock and roller could deliver. Get you autographed copy here (click on the image!): <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=5aukhgdab&et=1103692595321&s=4404&e=001LjtDe NFqsctJis1LKToH3ywEkGZEfn7WpkJv4ZgrCn1dukpgsFrW_cE6FpgZHpoj15XCZMPodMfC0ciG_ DJHEMX0PIupx4RPmX0VWT5rmd6NRIwNcrTaR4du77Mg0C0RQh6A5r9fXjfZvhpa4ycMezXoriXjn nuATzkxQaopfcbTJixi4j1P1i15-P> Along with that, we have out now the new Butcher Boys 7" with guest guitar from Cheetah himself. Catch his show these days, and you'll get a mix of old favourites from The Specials/Fun Boy three back catalogue plus choice solo releases. Neville's first involvement with The Specials was when they were still called The Coventry Automatics. Neville used to toast of Bernie, "Bernie Rhodes knows. Don't argue" at the beginning of the Specials hit single "Gangsters". When The Specials split up, Neville departed with Terry Hall and Lynval Golding, to form Fun Boy Three. They had a string of chart hits, some in collaboration with the all-female trio Bananarama. It was officially confirmed on the 7 April 2008 that the Specials were to reform, and on the 6 September 2008, six members of the band performed on the Main Stage at the Bestival billed as the 'Surprise Act'. Streetstyle by Ted Polhemus A big hello from across the pond in Montreal, yep, I've finally completed my emigration to Canada. It's extremely exciting, but not as exciting as the forthcoming Streetstyle book launch, exhibition and private view bought to you by those incomparable folk at PYMCA!! The launch has already garnered huge compliments from two very different areas: Hollywood star Chloe Sevigny describes the book as her 'sartorial bible', while the good folk over at City Hall, London, will be hosting a Streetstyle exhibition on their hallowed walls. From Hollywood to City Hall, not a bad start! PYMCA are also hosting a public exhibition at The Book Club, Shoreditch, from 30th September to 31st October. The private view is from 6pm on 30th September and will feature images from the book as well as showcasing a series of talks and discussions with Ted and guests about the past, present and future of Street Style and subcultural fashion. If you'd like to interview Ted, and / or film the talks and discussions to use as online content, just let me know and we'll get it arranged. And apologies if you've received this already as my lovely colleague Jolene has been busy sending out the news, but we will ensure our cross-Atlantic communication will improve over time. Here's the rest of the information. PYMCA are delighted to announce the launch of the new edition of the legendary book, Streetstyle by Ted Polhemus. “Streetstyle is my sartorial bible” – Chloe Sevigny in The New York Times. Pre-order the book from the PYMCA shop Price: £19.95 *Signed copies of Streetstyle will be available exclusively from the PYMCA website from the 23rd September, one week before general release* Without the Hipsters, Teddy Boys, Beats, Rockabillies, Rude Boys, Mods, Surfers, Hippies, Punks, B-Boys, Ravers, Harajuku Girls - and all the other streetstyle originals – most of us would be left without anything to wear. But the sharp suits, leather jackets, jeans, kaftans, flares, DMs, slick locks and so forth are only the visible, tangible part of this legacy. Oozing through the clothes, hairstyles, make-up and accessories is an attitude. An attitude which perhaps more than any other set the tone of life in the second half of the twentieth century and which shows no sign of dissipating in the twenty-first. This fully updated edition will feature nearly 100 extra pages with a four page bound insert, 5 new chapters, including over 250 compelling images, all packed into 224 devilishly stylish pages. The Book Club, 100 Leonard Street, London, EC2A 4RH
SEX PISTOLS have officially licensed their music to a TV ad for the first time. ‘Pretty Vacant’ will be used on a William Hill ad for betting on football. John Lydon, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock have received an undisclosed figure for the track and have also been given a £500 bet to make for a charity of their choice.

GANG OF FOUR ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM, CONTENT FIRST NEW MATERIAL IN 16 YEARS CONTENT OUT JANUARY 25th ON YEP ROC RECORDS Every bit as powerful and insightful as their classic work, CONTENT, the new album from Gang Of Four, sees founding members Jon King and Andy Gill continuing to deliver intelligent, powerful and liberating rock & roll that is both provocative and simply thrilling. "What we're trying to do is keep it totally stripped down, where everyone in the band makes an equally intense contribution," says King. With the simple but tough and loud sound of drums, guitar, bass and vocals on new tracks like "Who Am I?," "You Don't Have To Be Mad," "I Can't Forget Your Lonely Face" and "I Party All The Time," the songwriting on CONTENT is just as challenging and unconventional in 2010 as it was in 1978. "What I've been thrilled by over the years is that our music still seems to make sense to our audiences, however old they are, and these days they're mostly under 30," says King. "They tell us that our music means something, that it makes them want to go start a band. That amazes me. I would never have imagined when we started off that we would have this impact after such a long time." From creating one of music's pre-eminent debut albums (1979's ENTERTAINMENT) to influencing a wide range of punk, post-punk and indie rock bands (R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sonic Youth, Bloc Party, The Rapture, Franz Ferdinand and hundreds more), Gang Of Four have triumphantly defined their place in rock 'n roll. Set for a January 25th release on Yep Roc, CONTENT is the band's first album of new material in years and was written by King and Gill, and recorded and produced by Andy Gill. The album will be available in a standard CD release and on vinyl. It will also be available in the Ultimate Content Can - this contains the new album on CD, a book version of an art piece Jon and Andy have done on ceramic tiles depicting the last 40 years of world history, a book of lyrics, a book of Rotoscoped photographs of the band's emotions, phials of band members' blood and a scratch and sniff booklet which reflects the key areas of human activity. SQUEEZE 'SPOT THE DIFFERENCE' New album Released 11th October 2010 New single 'Loving You Tonight' Released 11th October 2010 "Squeeze are pretty much one of my favourite bands of all time" - Lily Allen On October 11th, the highly-rated, quintessential London band Squeeze return with 'Spot The Difference' a collection of 14 of their best-loved hits, re-recorded by the band as faithfully to the original versions as possible (whilst challenging their fans to spot the difference!) The result is no mere set of re-masters, more an affirmation that Squeeze are the masters of accessible guitar-pop. Formed in South London in 1973, and armed with Glenn Tilbrook's winning melodies and Chris Difford's pithy lyrics, songs such as 'Cool For Cats', 'Pulling Mussels (From The Shell)' and the classic 'Up The Junction' established Squeeze as one of the UK's finest pop acts. Yet they have also been one of its greatest exports, their bittersweet tales of London life and love proving universal enough to strike a chord in the USA. It was while on tour across the pond in 2007 that 'Spot The Difference' began to take shape - the band found that learning to play together was indeed like learning to ride a bicycle and their easy chemistry led to a desire to record again. The final catalyst was retreating to their hotel room and seeing yet another of their songs used in a TV commercial without their approval or knowledge, and the band decided to take action in the form of regaining ownership of their catalogue. Back in Glenn's studio, the band - fleshed out by long-time bassist John Bentley, plus newer members Simon Hanson on drums and Stephen Large on keys - set about re-recording the songs. Being something of an equipment hoarder, Glenn found he already had a lot of the old instruments, amps and mixers that the band had used first time round and former keyboard player and vocalist Paul Carrack was able to come back to lend his unmistakeable vocals to the new version of 'Tempted'. A massive influence on the likes of Lily Allen, Mark Ronson, The Feeling, Broken Bells and Andy Burrows (Razorlight, I Am Arrows), 'Spot The Difference' only reaffirms that Squeeze are refreshed and renewed and very much a contemporary band who are constantly looking to the future - a recent US TV performance of 'Pulling Mussels (From The Shell)' on 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon' saw the keyboard solo played on an Apple iPad! On top of this, Glenn and Chris have put their Ivor Novello winning partnership back into gear and started writing the first new Squeeze material in over 10 years, although there is no set date to record anything just yet. In the meantime, to herald the new album Squeeze have chosen 'Loving You Tonight' as its first single. Originally sung by Carrack and never released as a single in the UK, the re-record has vocals by Glenn and is immediately recognisable as a brand new recording, yet is produced with the energy and vigour of a band in their twenties. Additionally, a 'Deluxe Edition' of the album will be made available, which comes with a live recording of the band's recent set at the illustrious Fillmore. Squeeze are all set to end a triumphant year - which has seen them undertake a 5 week sold out tour the US and have the site of their first ever gig awarded with a PRS for Music Heritage Plaque - with a 22-date tour of the UK, reuniting with another familiar face in former keyboard man Steve Nieve and finishing up with 4 dates at 3 different London venues. Steve Ignorant is putting together a tour called The Last Supper, for which he will be performing CRASS songs from the period 1977-1982. The tour is a one-off which Steve is hoping to take around the UK, Europe, the USA/Canada, Japan and possibly Australia before packing away his CRASS songbook and moving on to other projects. A new batch of European dates have been added to the existing UK shows. A finale show will take place in London once all of the other parts of the world have been visited.
Steve also has a Facebook page set up and has been blogging there recently about the forthcoming tour, and what real fear is like.
Look out for a huge interview with Steve in the debut issue of Vive Le Rock magazine-out Oct 14th!
