RANCID¹S MATT FREEMAN GOES UPRIGHT FOR NEW DEVILS BRIGADE ALBUM Celebrated Bay Area punk legend Matt Freeman of Rancid and Operation Ivy fame will release the long awaited, self-titled debut album for his side project Devils Brigade on August 30 via Hellcat Records. Devils Brigade was conceived in 2000, when bassist Matt Freeman began writing songs with Tim Armstrong between Rancid tours. This led to a few EPs and some songs on Hellcat¹s Give Em The Boot compilation, but the project was put on the back burner when Rancid began touring and recording again. Years went by and after Rancid took a break from touring on the Let The Dominoes Fall record, Matt got the itch to reactivate the project with a new studio album. ³The original concept for this record was going to be a musical,² says Freeman. ³Tim had been kicking around an idea of doing a musical about the building of the Golden Gate Bridge. He had the title ³Half Way To Hell Club.² This was based on the name for the bridge workers who fell off the bridge while it was being built and fell into the safety net that was between them and the ocean. We grew up in the East Bay looking at that bridge and it has always been a part of our lives. Six of those songs ended up on the Devils Brigade record. The other songs were all original Devils Brigade songs from the first demo. We thought they were still good and we should record them again.² In early 2010, Matt and Tim entered the studio with DJ Bonebrake from the influential punk group X and recorded twelve quick tempered songs featuring Matt¹s signature, snarling vocals along with his snap, thumping upright bass, which shine through on roots driven punk tracks like ³I¹m Moving Through,² ³Who¹s Gonna Save Your Now² and ³My Own Man Now.² ³It was a great vibe in the studio,² Matt adds. ³The record has a real live and loose vibe. Loose in a good way. Tim¹s guitar style blended really well with DJ and everything clicked very quickly. We had a lot of fun making this record. I am going to take it out on the road whenever I can when Rancid is not doing anything.² Stay tuned to www.hellcat.com <http://www.hellcat.com> and www.myspace.com/devilsbrigadeofficial <http://www.myspace.com/devilsbrigadeofficial> for updates and news regarding Devils Brigade. Legendary space rockers HAWKWIND will embark on a major UK tour in December 2010 in support of their new studio album ³Blood of the Earth². The nationwide tour consists of 13 dates. Tickets are priced at £20, are available from the National Credit Card Hotline 0871 2301101 or can be ordered from www.seetickets.com. The tour kicks off at the Holmfirth Picturedome on Friday Decemeber 3rd. Support for all dates comes from UK rockers ³The Jokers². For a full list of dates, high-res images, and further info - http://www.noblepr.co.uk/Press_Releases/hawkwind/tour.htm In addition to the UK tour, Hawkwind will appear at ³HAWKFEST 2010² next month, which returns to Afton Farm on the Isle Of White. Curated by the members of Hawkwind, Hawkfest takes place between August 27th and 29th. Hawkfest originally came about after the breakdown of the free festival movement in the mid to late 1980's. The band felt that major festivals had lost what made them great. Gone was the intimate, carnival atmosphere and the colourful characters, only to be replaced with huge-scale commercialism. Wanting to get back to the roots of what made festivals so enjoyable, Hawkwind constructed a family friendly event where children could play and explore, whilst parents watched great music, safe in the knowledge that the kids would be safe. Tickets are priced at £70, for further info visit www.hawkfest.com.
Walter Lure of The Heartbreakers is coming to the UK! Best known as the guitar and vocal sparring partner to ex-New York Doll Johnny Thunders in The Heartbreakers, Walter Lure will be coming to the U.K for three gigs in October. On The Heartbreakers' much heralded 1977 'L.A.M.F.' album, Walter sang and co-wrote such classics as 'One Track Mind', 'Get Off The Phone', and 'All By Myself', as well as the otherwise released gems 'London Boys' and 'Too Much Junkie Business'. It will be the first time Walter, who was the bands co-vocalist and songwriter, has set foot on these shores since The Heartbreakers briefly reformed in 1984. On the Heartbreakers video of that tour's live Lyceum gig, Johnny Thunders memorably introduced Walter saying 'It's hard to get a guy off Wall Street, I can tell you'. Since then Lure has fronted his own band in New York, The Waldo's, as well as playing uncredited lead guitar for The Ramones on some of their later albums. These first gigs in 26 years could be the last chance for U.K audiences to catch a glimpse of a true New York punk legend! STREET DOGS READY FIFTH STUDIO ALBUM FOR AUGUST 30 The Boston bred punk band Street Dogs <http://www.myspace.com/streetdogs> return to champion the working class and to re-ignite punk rock with their finest and most urgent record to date, their self-titled fifth studio album, due out on August 30 via Hellcat Records. Co-produced by bass player Johnny Rioux and Rick Barton and engineered and mixed by Jason Livermore (Rise Against, NOFX) at the infamous punk rock recording studio The Blasting Room in Fort Collins, CO., the self-titled Street Dogs album is a vigorous testament to the band¹s longevity and ability to write inspiring punk rock that touches the soul and raises the fists. Having spent time as a soldier in Gulf War and serving his community as a firefighter, the original Dropkick Murphys¹ singer Mike McColgan sings from experience and from the heart on punk anthems like ³Rattle And Roll,² ³Up The Union,² ³Yesterday² and ³The Shape of Other Men.² ³We have songs about personal empowerment, personal freedom and the search for personal redemption on our record,² explains McColgan. ³We have a song called ³Hang Em¹ High² that talks about the corruption of Bernie Madoff and a song called ³Wild In Portland² that speaks of economic downturn and it's fallout.² ³There are also songs that eulogize our fallen friends who didn't fair too well in the game of life and songs that praise our family and our roots. And a song entitled ³Up The Union² for EFCA (Employee Free Choice Act) legislation which would make it less difficult for employees to organize labor unions and lessen the chance of employer reprisal for organizing. We¹ve got a Saturday night, punk rock throwdown anthem in our song ³Punk Rock And Roll² and with ³Rattle And Roll.² I pay homage once again to Dorchester and Dot Rats!² ³The album is self-titled because it¹s collectively as a group coming forward and saying this is our best and most definitive work so far.² Punk rock runs deep in the veins of Street Dogs, with McColgan¹s uncompromising lyrics alongside bassist Johnny Rioux, guitarists Marcus Hollar and Tobe Bean III and drummer Paul Rucker¹s fist pumping street punk anthems. The band burst onto the scene in 2002 and has released a string of classic albums including 2008¹s State of Grace. After incessant tours around the world alongside bands like The Offspring, Alkaline Trio, Anti-Flag and headlining tours in US and Europe in support of State of Grace, Street Dogs will once again lead the fight against social and political injustices with their signature style of rabble rousing punk rock and the release of their fifth studio album on August 30. Street Dogs Track Listing: 1. Formation - 0:43 2. Rattle And Roll - 1:50 3. Up The Union - 2:28 4. Punk Rock And Roll - 2:34 5. The Shape Of Other Men - 2:24 6. Yesterday - 2:25 7. Signal Gallery is delighted to present ‘Beyond Punk’ featuring the artwork of punk musicians, artists associated with punk bands and artistic friends of punk. The legendary bassist from The Adverts, Gaye Advert, curates the exhibition, which will gather together a fantastic collection of ‘hell raising’ talent.
From the outset, the punk movement was about more than just music. The punk ‘look’ was as vibrant and ‘shocking’. Many punk musicians started their creative lives as visual artists who, one day, found themselves playing a guitar, bashing a drum or shouting into a microphone and before they knew it, they had recording contracts and gigs booked well into the future. The result of this musical success was that their artwork took a back seat. Over time, many of these musicians have returned to their creative roots and started producing artworks again. This rich wellspring of visual talent will be the centerpiece of the ‘Beyond Punk’ exhibition.
The line up speaks for itself: Adam Ant (Adam & the Ants), Charlie Harper (UK Subs), Chris Brief (The Briefs), Dale Grimshaw, Dee Generate (Eater), Gaye Black (Adverts), Gee Vaucher (Crass), Jamie Reid (Sex Pistols), Knox (Vibrators), Nick Taggart (Zkrr Zkretna), Philip Barker (Buzzcocks), Poly Styrene (X Ray Spex), Shanne Bradley (Nipple Erectors), Shepard Fairey, Steve Ignorant (Crass) and Youth (Killing Joke). And more…
‘Beyond Punk’ will reflect the richly varied inventive world that has grown up around the punk movement over the past thirty-five years. In an age when the young find it increasingly hard to achieve new ways to shock their elders, nostalgia for the simple but effective ‘fuck off’ of punk is very strong. Those musicians and artists involved in the movement are being recognized as the last ’lost’ generation.
ORIGINAL PUNK PIONEER CONFIRMED FOR THE1234 FESTIVAL VIC GODARD AND THE SUBWAY SECT TO PLAY SHOREDITCH PARK 5 STAGES OF FUTURE ROCK N ROLL AND ELECTRONIC ACTION PLUS 10 AFTERSHOW PARTIES FOR ONLY £20 *FOR PRESS PASSES GET IN CONTACT ASAP* www.the1234shoreditch.com <http://www.the1234shoreditch.com/> Over the past few weeks THE 1234 Festival have confirmed some heavyweight talent to play Shoreditch¹s NUMBER ONE celebration of all that is great and good in music today, including The Silver Machine (consisting of members from Primal Scream, Sex Pistols and The Who) and Joy Division/New Order bassist Peter Hook. bringing more of the original punk spirit to the event - Vic Godard and the Subway Sect are also confirmed to play THE 1234 in Shoreditch Park on Saturday July 24th Festival director Sean Mclusky commented ³ Vic is a true original, a one off, apart from his original punk rock credentials he is credited as pretty much single handedly inventing indie in the late 70¹s his work had a massive impact on bands like Edwyn Collins ŒOrange Juice, The Fire Engines etc. I am very happy to have Vic on the bill this year, his current set is a great introduction to work from all his great albums.² Vic Godard and the Subway Sect are one of the true punk rock originals. In 1976, Vic Godard formed Subway Sect with three other fans of the Sex Pistols <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_Pistols> at the suggestion of Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malcolm_McLaren> , who wanted another band for the line-up of the 100 Club Punk Festival <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/100_Club_Punk_Festival> . Despite their inexperience, Subway Sect made a successful debut at the festival. They appeared with The Clash <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Clash> on the White Riot Tour in 1977 and released their debut single <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_(music)> , Nobody's Scared' / 'Don't Split It, in March 1978. While recording their debut album, the band's manager Bernie Rhodes <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_Rhodes> suddenly fired the entire band except for Godard. Only one track from the album's recording sessions, Ambition, was released by Rough Trade records; the single was a major hit on the alternative charts. Godard re-formed Subway Sect in 1980 with new musicians and released the album What¹s The Matter Boy? Following a summer tour with Buzzcocks, Subway Sect disbanded again. Guitarist Johnny Britten formed a rockabilly band but was soon forced to leave the group, at which point Godard stepped in to take his place. They recorded the album Songs For Sale in 1981, but were disappointed with the results and disbanded soon after. Godard also recorded an LP at Olympic Studios, called T.R.O.U.B.L.E., with a group of London jazz musicians known as Working Week, which was eventually released two years later by Rough Trade Records. In the mid-1980s, Godard took a brief hiatus from music and became a postman.1990-2010 (as well as constant live-gigging): More recent recordings include: Sans End, the Singles Anthology, 20 Odd Years (compilation), In Trouble Again (remixed and vocals redone).1978 Now the ²lost² first Subway Sect Album rerecorded with original Sect drummer Mark Laff, and with Paul Myers guesting on a couple of tracks. In 2009 Vic Goddard set up GNU records. First release was Live in Stereo, a limited edition live album and the 2nd release is (14/05/2010) Blackpool EP consisting of 4 tracks from the musical Blackpool, by Vic Goddard and Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting). His new album ²We Come as Aliens² is set for release in October 2010 on Overground records (limited edition vinyl on Aktion und Spass) With Paul Cook (Sex Pistols) as guest drummer. THE LIVING END emerged from hibernation but briefly last month, and what a great emergence it was. Coming out in fine form to keep the plentiful crowds warm at the 2010 Community Cup match, The Living End tore through a short set packed with favourites both old and new. The band also jumped headfirst into "The Clash" theme of the match, pulling out a couple of perfectly measured Clash covers, amongst them a truly inspiring cover of London Calling. With a narrow victory for the RRR/PBS Megahertz, a good day was had by all. Photos from the riotous proceedings to be found here. <http://www.fasterlouder.com.au/gallery/17166/19/The-Community-Cup-2010.htm> The Living End were included amongst some of the worlds greatest live acts a couple of weeks back, as Triple J curated their annual Impossible Music Festival. TLE's huge set from the 2006 Port Pirie Triple J One Night Stand was blasting out of radios the country over, and you can blast the highlights for yourself by hitting the Triple J website. <http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/live/latw/sessions/s2935708.htm> For now The Living End are still busy writing for their next album, but trust us when we say there are some things in the works. THE JIM JONES REVUE New Album - BURNING YOUR HOUSE DOWN - September 6th New Single - High Horse - August 23rd UK Summer Festivals - Latitude, Hop Farm, Bestival, Tapestry ³The greatest rock Œn¹ roll band in the world right now² - Phil Alexander, MOJO The Jim Jones Revue's new album Burning Your House Down will be released by Punk Rock Blues Records / [PIAS] Recordings on September 6th. Produced by Jim Sclavunos (of Nick Cave &The Bad Seeds/Grinderman), Burning Your House Down captures the roar of an untamed band at the top of their game. With the microphone shredding wail of the incomparable Jim Jones at the helm, fearlessly spurred by Rupert Orton¹s six-string maelstrom, Elliot Mortimer¹s savaged ivories and the jackhammer rhythm section of drummer Nick Jones and bassist Gavin Jay, The Jim Jones Revue swing like a giant ball and chain. In the last few years The Jim Jones Revue have swiftly progressed from their earliest shows in the dive bars of East London to staking their claim as an unstoppable force on today¹s British rock 'n' roll scene. Since the day Steve Lamacq announced on his 6 Music show "I think I may have something here" and proceeded to play tracks from the band's eponymous debut album, The Jim Jones Revue juggernaut has not looked back. The first single off Burning Your House Down will be High Horse due August 23rd. Complementing this release, The Jim Jones Revue play an array of UK Summer festival dates including Latitude, Hop Farm, Bestival, and Tapestry. Later this year a world tour commences, encompassing the UK, Europe, the USA, Australia and New Zealand. Extending from late 2010 into 2011, the band is destined to leave a trail of scorched earth in its wake. A rabid fan-base and radio DJ champions like Marc Riley, Gideon Coe, Mark Lamarr and John Kennedy have made The Jim Jones Revue a true international underground sensation. Steve Lamacq¹s on-air heads up to Jack White led directly to The Jim Jones Revue scoring a support slot with Dead Weather. MOJO has hailed them as one of the bands to look out for in 2010, with a nomination in this year's MOJO Honours List for a "Best Newcomer Award". With heaps of accolades, it¹s no wonder the band¹s star continues to rise; with Burning Your House Down there's a fair chance they'll soar straight into orbit. Reflecting five generations of punk the festival sees the stage being shared by legends and founding fathers of the form like the New York Dolls to brand new heros like Gallows. It also sees a key performance from the highly influential Bad Religion, the ever popular Stiff Little Fingers, recent punk rock world cup winners as voted for by the listeners of BBC 6music- the UK Subs, ex Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy, upcoming heroes like King Blues, highly rated high adrenaline punk rock of Goldblade, psychedelic hardcore of Fucked UP, American legends like the Dwarves and hardcore heros Agnostic Front and Cro Mags as well as 150 other bands.... Tickets are selling fast...should be a 6000 sell out this year. The festival is unique- with three non stop live stages, a brilliant atmosphere, an audience flying in from all over the world. It also has acoustic stages, an art gallery and John Robb's TALK! stage which will feature spoken word, book readings and live in conversation interviews with punk rock legends conducted by Robb himself...
