As a teen Kim Salmon blew his mind on the fusion of Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew, the stellar freakout of Sun Ra’s ‘Space is the Place’ and the generally unhinged groove of Can’s Ege Bamyasi. They showed him an alternative to just ‘playin the blooze’. Then Punk Rock came along! The earlier inspirations, however, where not idealistically opposed to the free expression espoused by the punk movement. Some of the freeform freakout fusion can be heard in Kim’s seminal band the Scientists on tracks like Nitro, Revhead and Human Jukebox, in fact most of what the band played throughout the nineteen eighties. As that band and decade came to a close Kim resolved to give free reign to that avant garde, jazz, in fact, downright weird streak, on his ‘solo’ venture The Surrealists. Their debut ‘Hit Me with the Surreal Feel’ is soaked in it all! Alas, as the nineties progressed, so did this band into a highly respected but conventional indie rock band. It did much successful touring around Europe, the USA and Australia on its own and with the likes of, U2, The Bad Seeds, Jon Spencer and the Cramps. It’s best known and best selling album was 1993’s Sin Factory.
With the 2006 reunion of the Surrealists, for the Spanish Azkena Festival, Kim was re-acquainted with the free jazz/noise/ fusion bug and resolved to get the band back together for at least long enough to work through what it started back in the late 1980s.

Recorded throughout 2008 and 2009 over a series of live sessions, ‘Grand Unifying Theory’ has the band given some framework compositions by Kim. The band – Kim, Stu Thomas and Phil Collings – then takes these ideas to the outer limits of punk/jazz/ thrash freakout!. The results are taken by Kim and producer Mike Stranges and assembled into the most far out music Kim Salmon has been responsible for to date! ‘Grand Unifying Theory’ with its polyrhythmic beats, its atonal keys, its heavy funk/punk grooves, its spaced out use of equipment buzz and Dictaphone is now being released on Low Transit Industries.

Kim Salmon is the driving force behind The Surrealists, Salmon, The Scientists, Darling Downs and was a main contributor to the Beasts Of Bourbon. This is the first Surrealists record in a decade and features vocal & recording assistance from Dave Graney & Clare Moore.

The Scientists will be performing at All Tomorrow’s Parties New York series with The Stooges & Mudhoney later in 2010 with a special schedule Surrealists show in the pipeline.

From the Independent-

McLaren to be buried at Highgate

By Tom Peck

Saturday, 10 April 2010

Mr McLaren’s former partner Dame Vivienne Westwood, with whom he fathered a son, Joseph Corre, who founded the lingerie chain Agent Provocateur, has confirmed she will attend the funeral. She had not been in touch with Mr McLaren for several years.

He died from mesothelioma, a rare cancer affecting the protective lining around the body’s internal organs, most commonly the lungs and the chest wall. It is most commonly associated with exposure to asbestos, but not all cases occur as a result of this.

"He was diagnosed with cancer in October, but you wouldn’t know it to look at him," Ms Kim said. "He was very healthy his entire life, and originally he was doing exceptionally well.

"Surgery and chemotherapy don’t do very much for this particular cancer. But we’d heard of other people who’d extended their lives by natural treatments. The more research we did we found it was a very good way to recover, and as he wasn’t suffering very much, he decided to go down this natural route. He didn’t like the sterile hospital environment. He thought this would be better psychologically. The clinic he visited in Switzerland gave him vitamin supplements, special foods, and other natural treatments, and he only visited as an outpatient.

"Nobody expected him to die so quickly. Even two weeks ago the doctors said they had begun to feel pessimistic, and that he would only have a few more months. But then things just deteriorated so rapidly. The clinic was unable to treat him as an inpatient, and he moved to a hospital."

Mr McLaren died there on Thursday. Ms Kim, his son Joseph Corre and Ben Westwood, Vivienne Westwood’s son from a previous marriage, were at his bedside. Mr Corre said yesterday: "He was the original punk rocker and revolutionised the world. He’s somebody I’m incredibly proud of. He’s a beacon of a man to look up to."

Sylvain Sylvain, a founding member of the New York Dolls, the band McLaren first managed, said: "Malcolm opened the doors for punk music. He was a visionary and took what was going on in New York City and made it global. He was a massive influence on everyone who ever had a punk shop or band. His passing represents the final chapter in an era when music was exciting."

Jah Wobble, the first bass player in John Lydon’s band Public Image Limited, knew McLaren in the punk era. He said: "You can’t deny he was very important. He was a very interestin

Mod Mania

A Truly British Phenomenon

Release Date: April 26th                      Label: UMTV

The mod revival starts now with the launch of this definitive double CD, showcasing the greatest tracks that defined a generation.

Rediscover the sub-culture of mods: the flamboyant fashion, screeching scooters and constant clubbing which is epitomised through hit tracks from the likes of The Who, The Kinks, Georgie Fame, The Spencer Davis Group and The Small Faces.  The distinctive blending of British Rhythm and Blues and classic American Soul is revitalised on this superb double disc album, providing the soundtrack to the days when a fishtail parka covered a sharply dressed teenager in a post-war Britain.

This is not to overshadow the mod revival of the late 70s, where classic artists such as Secret Affair, The Lambrettas, Purple Hearts and the biggest of them all The Jam produced timeless anthems which united the scooter wielding modernists.

The third wave of mod culture is already upon us.  The Who played this year’s Super Bowl and revisited their classic Quadrophenia soundtrack, reproducing the album in its entirety during a live performance at the Albert Hall and this Autumn also sees the eagerly awaited remake of the iconic British movie Brighton Rock.  Starring Sam Riley, Pete Postlethwaite and Helen Mirren, this rewritten interpretation brings the story forward into the 60s and features legions of mods, an assembly of scooters and of course, their music.  Fred Perry and Ben Sherman are releasing their new mod fashion ranges and Paul Weller (The Modfather) of featured band The Jam was recently crowned a God Like Genius at this year’s NME Awards.  Last year’s Ska Mania has sold over 150,000 copies and Mod Mania is also set for mass appeal to the in crowd.

You may not have to worry about the threat of rockers and police anymore, but the music lives on.  It’s time to rev up that Lambretta and get ready for Mod Mania.

Malcolm McLaren, the former manager of The Sex Pistols and the man who claimed to have invented punk, has died aged 64.

McLaren died in New York this morning after a long battle with cancer.

His spokesman, Les Molloy, said the impresario had been suffering from cancer for some time and he expected his body would be returned to the UK shortly.

An unashamed self-publicist, McLaren gained notoriety as manager of the Sex Pistols who were propelled to No 1 in the charts with God Save The Queen in 1977. Having brought together the roguish band members he went on to become a household name in his own right, entering into the public spotlight again in recent years when he stood for the newly created London mayoralty in 2000. His policies included the serving of alcohol in libraries.

Having dropped out of art school – McLaren said the experience taught him "that it is better to be a flamboyant failure than any kind of benign success" – he made a first foray into music management in the early 70s after convincing the New York Dolls to employ him as manager.

The band flopped at the time, but the experiment, complete with red leather and Soviet-style clothes, heralded the start of a career-breaking ground in fashion and music.

McLaren, who was born in North London, frequently professed to leading the capital’s avant garde art scene during the 70s.

He opened a shop in fashionable King’s Road 1971 with his then girlfriend Vivienne Westwood. The shop was renamed SEX in 1974 and quickly gained iconic status drawing in the "young, sexy, assassins" who would become the Sex Pistols.

The couple had a son, Joseph Corre, the co-founder of lingerie shop Agent Provocateur.

His reputation was carved by the success of the Sex Pistols and an eye for publicity stunts which would grip the British and American culture scene through the 70s.

McLaren also managed a number of other bands, including Bow Wow Wow before producing his own records including the much-sampled track Double Dutch from the 1983 album Duck Rock.

He continued to be involved in the culture and arts scene up until his death, earning him in equal measure acclaim as a doyen of music and design and criticism for his marketing of pop culture.
