Having exploded onto the UK rock scene way back in 1984 with their angry debut Vengeance, Bradford’s New Model Army have scaled the heights of chart success, ‘Top Of The Pops’, major labels and sold out tours. Defiantly independent and political, they have just released their 11th studio album ‘Today is a Good Day’ on their own Attack Attack label. It features twelve passionate anthems that cover everything from punk, rock and folk in their uniquely English way. After nearly three decades NMA are showing no signs of letting the bastards grind them down yet! Big Cheese spoke to their main man Justin Sullivan.

I always seem to see a lot of people wearing  New Model Army shirts in New York.
“We’re not a big band in the States. We’re not a big band anywhere. We’re kind of a cult band everywhere. Wherever you go in the world, there’s clutches of people wearing our T-shirts. So we belong to clutches of people everywhere, you know?”

You’ve been going for nearly thirty years but the new album sounds really positive and fresh.
“People keep asking me this question: ‘How do you do it?’ I don’t know. It’s just kind of what we do. I think the reason why we got in a band in the first place, is to do with the fact that we love music. We just started to write songs. I went to see The Ruts and it was the best gig I’ve ever seen. It was like 200 people in a little pub in Bradford, and in that gig was everything that was wonderful, and terrible and brilliant and scary and everything about being alive…and I walked out of that gig feeling like all of my insides were coming out, like someone had taken a Brillo pad to my spirit and it was all fresh and gleaming. I remember that feeling. And that’s the template. When people walk out of our gigs, the intention is for them to feel like how I felt that night. Of course sometimes we’re great, and sometimes we’re less than great but the reasons remain the same. The songs are always about something. And there’s always stuff to write about.”

You’ve always had a really English sound from the lyrics to the emotion that you create.
“I think it probably is quite English but strangely enough, we’re not particularly popular in England – or I should say we’re not popular within the English media? The English are famously embarrassed by passion. They like their art to come with a great degree of irony and knowingness. If they get passionate, it’s like: ‘We all know this is a bit ridiculous, don’t we?’ The English sort of love people like Morrissey and Jarvis Cocker, people that are slightly ‘knowing’. We’re the kind of antithesis of that. We mean it.

Well you’ve always been pretty political, but what do you think of England now?
“Things go on and the same things come round. Politics is a dirty business. I’m interested in the world, and I’m interested in what’s going on, and power – how people handle power and how they try to achieve it and all the rest of it. The purpose of the band was not to push a political philosophy. I believe in vengeance and forgiveness. Music’s about emotions, and emotions can be contradictory. So we’re not afraid to contradict ourselves. Some days you feel something different from other days.”

Your fans are really important to you, and really get into the gigs in a special way.
“It’s weird. The New Model Army following is a strange phenomenon. And there’s some kind of belief that were some relic from the 1980s that are jolting out some ‘80s songs to another aging band of loyal followers and it’s really not true. Again, these sort of preconceptions that people have. The weird thing is, we had sort of a travelling following back in 1982/83 and it just sort of used to regenerate every five years. But the average age of a member of our audience is early/mid-thirties. And I’m fifty three! So the whole thing for following New Model Army has regenerated several times over. We did London, Cologne and Amsterdam and I looked at the set list. We did seventeen songs, and before we got to the encores, there was only two that were from 1980s. I can’t think of any other band from the 1980s that could get away with that. The people that come to our gigs accept that they’re not there to watch us play old stuff. They’re interested in what we’re doing now, and it’s an amazing privilege.”

A lot of my favourite bands are from the 1980s and a lot of them are shadows of their former selves.
“Well, over thirty years we’ve only had fourteen different members in the band, which is not a massive turnover. Just every now and again. I still believe in it, the same way I believed in it when I first started.”

Last month Vive Le Punk asked you who you wanted to see reform in 2010.  The clear winner with 38% was Adam and The Ants.  Here we have a look into what Adam and his Ants did after they split.

The front man, Mr Adam Ant-alias Stuart Goddard is the most recognisable and many people know that he went on to have solo success once the band split in 1982. He charted with the album Friend or Foe but this is the only real success he had with his solo career. During his time as a solo artist he worked with many big names in the music industry including Phil Collins. Ant was also invited to play Live Aid, only for Ant to be told he could only perform one song-‘Vive Le Rock’ and this is often credited as harming his career. After this he decided to focus on acting in America. Ant appeared in several U.S TV shows like Sledge Hammer! Tales From The Crypt and Northern Exposure. Since his time in the band Ant has also had some run-ins with the law, including the infamous incident in Kentish Town that saw him throw a car alternator through a pub window and pull a gun on the punters inside. Most recently Ant has written his autobiography and is back writing music once more after a recent acoustic performance.
Guitarist Marco Pirroni has had some great success with his new band The Wolfmen. After a brief stint of working with Sinead O’ Connor, Pirroni wanted to get back to writing his own music. So along with fellow Ant Chris Constantinou he formed The Wolfmen who have just released excellent new album Married To The Eiffel Tower.  Other former Ants Kevin Mooney and Chris Hughes have been under the radar with their work. Mooney has done several side projects but nothing of real great note. While Hughes also, known as Merrick, has become a successful record producer.
The big question now is, with the two main influences in the band back in music, will the band reform in 2010?

Adam and the Ants hits and misses-

The Knack lead singer Doug Fieger dies aged 57

Doug Fieger

Fieger said he had been clean and sober for 25 years

The lead singer of The Knack, Doug Fieger, who co-wrote the hit My Sharona, has died at the age of 57.

Fieger, who died on Sunday at his home in Los Angeles, had been battling cancer, and had undergone surgery to remove brain tumours in 2006.

"Our hearts are broken, we will miss you Doug," his band members posted on The Knack’s official website.

My Sharona topped the US singles chart in 1979, and led to the group being hailed as the "next Beatles".

The song, co-written with Berton Averre, was inspired by an ex-girlfriend of the same name.

It was re-released in 1994 after featuring in the Ben Stiller film Reality Bites, and was later revealed to be on former US president George W Bush’s iPod.

It reached number six in the UK and enjoyed a revival after appearing in a cereal advert last year.

Fieger had spoken frankly about his drug and alcohol abuse during the band’s heyday, but recently revealed he had been living a healthy lifestyle for more than 25 years.

Former member Bruce Gary died of cancer in 2006, while Berton Averre and Prescott Niles still perform as The Knack.

PENNYWISE OFFICIALLY NAME ZOLI TEGLAS AS NEW LEAD SINGER BAND CURRENTLY IN THE STUDIO WORKING ON NEW MATERIAL PENNYWISE EUROPEAN TOUR KICKS OFF THIS APRIL South Bay (US) punk pioneers Pennywise have announced that Zoli Teglas of Orange County¹s Ignite, is the band¹s new and permanent lead singer.                                                                   After months of searching, the members of Pennywise announced that Ignite vocalist Zoli Teglas is now officially the new front man. Teglas, a longtime friend and tour mate, recently played a handful of So Cal shows with Pennywise, including the 2009 Smokeout Festival and a sold out Holiday Benefit concert for Amnesty International at Long Beach Arena. Teglas will join Pennywise on its upcoming European tour which kicks off this April. Pennywise is currently at work on a new record, its first featuring the new lineup. After the sudden departure of former singer Jim Lindberg, a member of Pennywise for 19 years, guitarist Fletcher Dragge called Teglas a ³natural choice² to take over vocal duties for the band. Bassist Randy Bradbury explains, ³What started out as a temporary position was just too good to put an end to. Zoli brings to the table a tremendous vocal ability, creativity, and a die hard work ethic. There is a bond that makes this change feel like it was simply meant to be, and considering the recent unfortunate events, having Zoli join the band is a well needed shot of positive energy.² Teglas was excited to take the stage with his friends, noting, "I'm stoked to be singing with Pennywise. I'm a huge fan of the band and am super grateful to share the stage with my long time friends Fletcher, Byron and Randy." Calling it quits was never in the cards for the remaining members of Pennywise. ³We love this, we love going on the road,² Dragge explained to AP back in August ¹09. ³There's nothing more important to me than being on stage in front of our fans and having them sing our lyrics back at us and feel the energy. This has become so much bigger than just us as a band. It's become a family and a brotherhood of people that I feel depend on us. I'm still here to continue to deliver the message as are Byron and Randy. Our motto is to follow your dreams and pursue them. Don't waste time because if you're wasting time on something you're not into, then you're not living. We're going to go out there and have fun doing what we love until it stops being fun. Pennywise is one of the most significant bands to emerge from Southern California¹s second wave of punk rock. Formed in 1988 in Hermosa Beach, California, Pennywise has released nine full-length studio albums; one live album; two extended plays; and one DVD. Their most recent studio effort, Reason to Believe, was released to over 500,000 fans for free through a limited offering from MySpace Records. The critically acclaimed album was also sold physically and digitally the world over. ³The Western World,² the first single from this watershed album, quickly became the most successful single of the band¹s storied career. Founded when punk rock couldn¹t be less popular and hair bands were in fashion, Pennywise quickly developed a style entirely its own--a tsunami of California hardcore, melodic surf punk and optimistic anthems that went against the seek-and-destroy ethos of its era. ³We¹ve done things our own way,² Dragge points out, ³and we¹ve never taken no for answer. We¹ve been a punk band for 20 years, and we¹ve traveled the world and we¹ve had a lot of people tell us what we could and couldn¹t do. ŒTell me what we can¹t do, and I¹ll try twice as hard to do it.¹ That¹s the one thing this band has taught me: ŒIf you want it bad enough, you can have it.²    Pennywise European Tour Dates (w/ Strike Anywhere & Wilhelm Scream) 24-Apr                  B             Meerhout - Groezrock Festival 25-Apr                  D             Saarbrücken - Garage / RECONSTRUCTION Show! 26-Apr                  D             Hamburg - Markthalle with The Bouncing Souls 27-Apr                  D             Berlin - SO36 with The Bouncing Souls 28-Apr                  A             Vienna - Planet.TT/Gasometer info & tickets 30-Apr                  H             Budapest - Dürer Kert tickets / more tickets 01-May                 SLO        Maribor - Stuk tickets 02-May                 D             Munich - Werk tickets 03-May                 CH          Zurich - Dynamo 04-May                 F              Istres (Marseille) - L´Usine 06-May                 ESP         Barcelona - Sala Apolo 07-May                 ESP         Barakaldo - Sala Rockstar tickets 08-May                  F             Toulouse -Bikini 09-May                 F              Paris - Trabendo 11-May                 UK          Bristol - Academy tickets 12-May                 UK          Leeds - Academy tickets 13-May                 UK          Newcastle - Academy tickets 14-May                 UK          Glasgow - ABC tickets 15-May                 UK          Birmingham - Academy tickets 16-May                 UK          London - Shepherds Bush Empire tickets For more information please visit:

We Love 77 at WW Gallery

This is the first major UK solo exhibition for Sardine & Tobleroni, who describe their practice as ‘Conceptual Art Brut’. Sardine & Tobleroni were inspired to embark on their series in 2005 when Mojo ran a special Punk Issue called 77 Punk Smashers. The paintings include The Clash, X-ray Spex, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Buzzocks, MC5, The Stooges, Patti Smith, New York Dolls, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sham 69, The Damned, Joy Division and Black Flag, to name a few.
For many 1977 was the definitive year of Punk, but this exhibition also features influential bands from the early American precursors like The Stooges, to contemporary bands like the Libertines. The result is the first art exhibition of its kind and a monumental tribute by the artists to one of the most exciting eras in the history of popular culture.
To launch the exhibition, British film director and musician Don Letts – original house DJ at the Roxy, where the first Punks congregated – will play a set, and Poly Styrene, often described as the voice of 77, will be introducing her film X-ray Spex Live at the Roundhouse 2008. To give further context to the paintings, there will be a series of documentary screenings, including The History of the Clash, Don Letts’ PUNK: attitude, Zillah Minx’s She’s a Punk Rocker UK and much more.

This Is Big Audio Dynamite¹ 25th Anniversary Legacy Edition : 26th April Remastered Original Album & 12 Track Bonus CD ³Our sound was a blend of New York beats, Jamaican bass lines, English rock¹n¹roll guitar and me taking care of the sampled dialogue and movie stuff. The B.A.D. philosophy was to utilise all the elements of the media to create a fuller sound and write songs that were about something. With a foot in the future and a foot in the past we were dealing with the right now.² Don Letts Sony Music will release ŒThis Is Big Audio Dynamite Legacy Edition¹ on 25th April. The classic debut album from B.A.D will be available on CD and as a download and will feature a bonus CD containing 12 rare remixes, dub versions, edits, outtakes and B Sides, 5 of which are previously unreleased. The release also boasts new personal essays from band members Mick Jones, Don Letts, Dan Donovan, Leo ³E-Z Kill² Williams and Greg Roberts, unpublished photos and images of memorabilia from the original album release. BAD (12 inch US remix) 12. This Is Big Audio Dynamite (7 inch Non LP B Side) * Previously unreleased Released in October 1985 and ³born from the ashes of The Clash² as Don Letts puts it, ŒThis Is Big Audio Dynamite¹ marked a monumental moment in musical history. Post-punk revisionism clashed head on with hip-hop beatboxes (pre-Beastie Boys and Run-DMC¹s fusion projects), dancefloor grooves, the Vocoder (precursor to T-Pain¹s ŒAuto-tune¹), and eye-opening, ear-bending cinematic samples gathered up from spaghetti westerns, Nic Roeg films and more. Their debut single ŒThe Bottom Line¹ was swiftly remixed by Rick Rubin and released on his ŒDef Jam¹ label. ³From the outset B.A.D. was a breeding ground for ideas,² drummer and beatbox maestro Greg Roberts sums up, ³a crossroads where all good forms of music could and should diverge; New York, London, Kingston ...funky beats, reggae bass, rock guitar and classic songs shot through with cinematic vision. The diverse personalities in our West London clan made for a challenging and energetic fun filled ride in the short lived but bright burning star that was B.A.D. The first album has all the playful inventiveness of a group set free from musical constraints.² ³What do I remember?² ponders Mick Jones. ³Reagan was president, Thatcher was the prime minister and we were Big Audio DynamiteŠ.it was a buzz to record in Basing Street studiosŠ.Bob Marley recorded thereŠ.Lucky Gordon (of Christine Keeler fame) for foods and nourishmentŠ..Paul 'Groucho' Smykle at the controls with his heavy space-age dub mixesŠ..bringing the New York vibe to West LondonŠ. John Foxx (Analogue Show) with Gary Numan (DJ Set) and special guests... Saturday the 5th of June, 2010... John Foxx & The Maths - 'Destination'/'September Town' is released by Metamatic Records on 15th of March 2010. The Roundhouse <> launched its festival of electronica, Short Circuit, last year with a line-up including Jeff Mills, Erol Alkan, Holger Czukay (Can), Gavin Bryars and The BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The first acts of Short Circuit 2010 are now announced: an evening celebrating the best of British electronic music, headlined and curated by John Foxx. Following a DJ set by one of the UK's most influential electronic artists, Gary Numan with co-producer Ade Fenton, John Foxx will perform a unique analogue synthesizer show to mark his thirtieth anniversary as a solo artist. The founder of Britain's first synthesizer rock band Ultravox, released his debut solo album Metamatic in early 1980. This dark electro classic is one of the few albums to be acknowledged by Aphex Twin as an inspiration and is described by the Klaxons as a visionary record. Foxx and a one-off group of special guests will assemble on stage for the first time with the machines he used on that album - the Moogs, ARPs and drum machines that created the sound of the future - to perform material from Metamatic and a selection of early Ultravox music. The set will also include brand new material created in collaboration with Paul Daley from Leftfield, along with new songs by John Foxx & The Maths - an all-analogue synthesizer project with London-based artist Benge, whose work has been described by Brian Eno as a brilliant contribution to the archeology of electronic music. Benge's London studio houses one of the biggest collections of analogue synthesizers in the UK and was heavily featured in last Autumn's BBC documentary, Synth Britannia. Gary Numan was filmed at the studio for a recent interview <> where he discusses the impact that John Foxx had on his own music. Earlier in the day there will be a series of events programmed by Foxx. These will include movies, DJs, VJs, his own new collaborations with various film-makers and a Super 8 project he's currently working on with London Orbital author, Iain Sinclair. Further information about this event, including details of some more special guests, will be announced soon . . . Meanwhile, on 15 March the debut single by John Foxx & The Maths - 'Destination'/'September Town' is released by Metamatic Records. It will be followed by a new John Foxx Best Of, Metatronic (30th Anniversary Collection) which features a selection of his darker electro tracks from the last three decades and also includes, for the first time on DVD, the videos for 'Underpass', 'No One Driving' and 'He's a Liquid'. Date : Saturday the 5th of June, 2010. Web : Tickets : Address : Roundhouse, Chalk Farm Road, London NW1 8EH Telephone : 0844 482 8008
