ROBYN HITCHCOCK & The VENUS 3
New Album Out March 22nd
“Anglo-psychedelic master”-- The Independent
Over the past three decades, UK singer/songwriter/guitarist/painter/actor Robyn Hitchcock has amassed an extensive and distinguished body of work that has established him as one of rock music’s most respected and beloved iconoclasts. A musician’s musician, and still criminally underexposed despite a long history of critical appreciation, Hitchcock’s vivid surrealist song craft has over the years earned him a devout international fan base – including filmmaker Jonathan Demme who in 1998 directed Hitchcock’s live performance film Storefront Hitchcock, shot in a derelict shop window on 14th Street in NYC.
A prolific renegade and visionary cult artist, Hitchcock has released numerous albums with his longstanding outfits The Soft Boys and Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians, as well as his own ample solo work of which Propellor Time (Sartorial Records) is the very latest.
Recorded in 6 days at home in London’s Tropic of Hounslow over the Summer of 2006 and beyond, Propellor Time is no single-handed effort: The Venus 3, Hitchcock’s backing band for this recording boasts the rhythm section of Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows) on bass and Bill Rieflin on drums (formerly of Ministry and Revolting Cocks). Making a rare appearance as a sideman outside his usual group, R.E.M.’s Peter Buck (on 12 string and acoustic guitars) completes this esteemed line-up and is co-writer of the album’s title track with Hitchcock. This same Venus 3 configuration of Buck, McCaughey & Rieflin appears on Hitchcock’s 2006 release Olé Tarantula!,
The home sessions for what became Propellor Time were featured in John Edginton’s BBC Four documentary Robyn Hitchcock: Sex, Food, Death… and Insects. ‘We wanted to create a sprawling record like The Basement Tapes: so we sprawled for a week and then spent 3 years editing it’, said Robyn.
Additionally, a star-studded array of illustrious guest musicians collaborate with Hitchcock on Propellor Time; selected tracks feature contributions from John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin/Them Crooked Vultures); Johnny Marr (The Smiths/Modest Mouse) who co-wrote the track he plays on, “Ordinary Millionaire” with Hitchcock; old pal Nick Lowe; and former Soft Boy/Egyptian band mate Morris Windsor among many other notables.
Out March 22nd 2010, Propellor Time is Hitchcock’s second release on Sartorial Records, its predecessor being 2008’s Shadowcat (a collection of ‘90s outtakes). But 2009 was hardly a fallow year for Hitchcock having seen the advent of both a studio album Goodnight Oslo (on Yep Roc Records with the Venus 3), as well as the recently released live concert DVD, I Often Dream Of Trains In New York, shot by acclaimed director John Edginton and featuring Sartorial head honcho and multi-instrumentalist Terry Edwards.
Having recently participated in Graham Coxon’s Power Acoustic Ensemble concert at The Barbican, Hitchcock will be making several other special appearances in the run-up to the release of Propellor Time. His dates for January are:
Way To Blue – a series of Nick Drake tribute concerts featuring Green Gartside, Vashti Bunyan, Teddy Thompson & others.
Jan 20 - Glasgow Royal Concert Hall
Jan 21 - Brighton Dome
Jan 22 - London Barbican
Jan 23 - Warwick Arts Centre

Marky Ramone and Michale Graves (The Misfits) have recorded a song together, to be released as an iTunes download this Sunday (Jan. 10th). The song is titled ‘When We Were Angels’. Ramone got in his friend Graves to record the song to mark the 5th anniversary of his Marky Ramone’s Punk Rock Blitzkrieg radio show on Sirius/Xm Radio.
SOCIAL DISTORTION are set to hit the studio in February to record the follow-up to 2004’s ‘Sex, Love and Rock ‘n’ Roll’. The album is due for a spring release. They also tour South America in April.

NEW RAMONES BOOK ON THE WAY-LLOK OUT FOR——
Ramones: Soundtrack Of Our Lives, honors the Ramones legacy,
and features many unreleased stories and photos.
New Ramones book entitled Ramones: Soundtrack Of Our Lives is the result of nearly 5 years worth of work. It is full of poignant stories that reflect what Joey Ramone (RIP 2001), Dee Dee Ramone (RIP 2002), Johnny Ramone (RIP 2004), as well as the rest of the Ramones family have impacted their fans worldwide.
Ramones: Soundtrack Of Our Lives has interviews and text written by 90 contributors and has 224 pages, and 295 photos/drawings. This book brings together the Ramones family as never before, there are interviews by every surviving Ramones member: Ramones drummers (Tommy Ramone, Marky Ramone, and Richie Ramone), bassist CJ Ramone, and Johnny Ramone’s wife Linda Cummings. The introduction is written by Tommy Ramone.
Reluctant to offer fans stories which have been relayed thousands of times before, author and Ramones webmaster Jari-Pekka Laitio-Ramone provides new information about the band. His focus is on the Ramones impact on the history of Rock N’Roll.
This work is best described as a tribute book. Other Ramones publications have dwelt too much on the fights, problems and other negative aspects of the Ramones musical legacy. Lacking are the positive stories that are integral to the Ramones history. Jari-Pekka offers candid and positive opinions and stories from people who were influenced musically and inspired by the Ramones.
Contributors to Ramones: Soundtrack Of Our Lives include Seymour Stein (founder of Sire Records), Hilly Kristal (founder of the CBGB’s club), Rodney Bingenheimer (radioDJ/ KROQ-FM) and Maria Montoya-Kaye, Walter Lure (Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers, Waldos), Wayne Kramer (MC5/DKT), Andy Shernoff (The Dictators), Glen Kolotkin (producer), Noah "Noki" Citrin (an important friend to Joey Ramone in the 60’s), and Bam Margera (Jackass).
Ramones: Soundtrack Of Our Lives also features stories and recollections from all kinds of musicians, including Punk Legends and pioneers such as Dez Cadena (Misfits, Black Flag, DC3), Henry Rollins (Black Flag, Rollins Band), Charlie Harper (UK Subs), Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols, The Philistines), and Vinny Stigma, and Roger Miret (Agnostic Front).
Other Punk and Rock’n’Roll bands contributing are: Rob Wright (NoMeansNo and The Hanson Brothers), Andy Cairns (Therapy?), Kenny Håkansson, Nick Royale, and Robban Eriksson (The Hellacopters), Bela B. (solo artist, Die Ärzte), Bumblefoot (Guns N’Roses), Happy-Tom and Euroboy (Turbonegro), Johan Blomqvist (Backyard Babies), and Tom Wisniewski (MxPx).
Also included are several Heavy Metalists recalling their reverence & love for the Ramones. Among them are Frank Watkins (Obituary/ Gorgoroth), Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth), Phil Campbell (Motörhead), Jon Larsen (Volbeat), Miland "Mille" Petrozza (Kreator), Peter Tägtgren (composer, producer, Hypocrisy, Pain), Fernando and Mike (Moonspell), and Ricky Warwick (Almighty).
Jari-Pekka has been dedicated to running the biggest and most updated Ramones homepage since 1995 (http://ramones.kauhajoki.fi), and has authored the books, Heaven Needed A Lead Singer: Fans Remember Joey Ramone (2002), and Rock In Peace: Dee Dee And Joey Ramone (2004).
”I am happy to get the chance to show Ramones fans lots of unreleased photos and drawings prepared exclusively for this book” Jari-Pekka Laitio Ramone states. This book has never-before-released photos and drawings by people like Jenny Lens, George DuBose, and Bobby London.

PERE UBU Announce February UK tour New album ³Long Live Père Ubu!² (COOKCD497) out now Pere Ubu have announced they will be touring in February to promote the release of their latest album, ³Long Live Père Ubu!². All of the gigs, except the London Relentless Garage show, will be the ³Long Live Père Ubu!² The Spectacle show. For The Spectacle, Pere Ubu has devised an extraordinary event that involves connective dialog, electronic ambience, choreography, and animations by legendary film-makers The Brothers Quay. Not so much a case of Rock Music and Theatre coming together, it is more that the two find themselves engaged in a bloody fight to the death. Singer David Thomas stalks centre-stage, inhabiting the grotesque persona of the doomed Père Ubu, beset by the incompetence and treachery of his minions, who are all played by members of the band. The concert takes the shape of a radio play, steeped in the avant- garage sensibilities that the band pioneered. The Relentless Garage show on Thursday 25th February is entitled ³Pere Ubu: The First & The Last² and will see the band bringing both ends of their career together, performing in its entirety their first album, The Modern Dance, alongside their latest release over the course of two sets. The Modern Dance was released in February 1978 and stunned the pop and punk worlds with its vision and audacity. It quickly became a fixture in Great Albums Of All Time lists. "Long Live Père Ubu!" (released September 2009), has proved to be just as audacious and equally revolutionary in its scope and vision. Magazine‘s Dave Formula is poised to release his solo album "Satellite Sweetheart". It will be released on CD and download on Feb 15th 2010 through Wire Sound.
This debut collection of solo recordings features brand new collaborations on brand new material from fellow band members Howard Devoto, Barry Adamson, John Doyle and the late John McGeoch.
Additional performances are supplied by guest vocalists and musicians David McAlmont, Robert Wyatt, Corinne Drewery, Joel Purnell, Dennis Rollins and Clint Boon, even.
‘Satellite Sweetheart’, draws on Formula’s childhood in Whalley Range, Manchester. The striking childhood memory that inspired the collection is of Dave being taken to see Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who, after becoming the first man in space in 1961, made an appearance at the Amalgamated Union of Foundry Workers in Brook’s Bar, Manchester, in a show of proletarian solidarity.
“I got to shake his hand as he walked past”, says Dave.
The collaboration with Barry Adamson, ‘Bison Heard’, recalls Paul’s Record Shop, which sold calypso music, on Alexandra Road, Moss Side…
“It seemed like the coolest place on earth when I was being dragged up and down on a Saturday afternoon, doing the shopping with my folks”, says Dave.
Dave was introduced to Howard Devoto in Manchester during the 1977 white heat days of punk rock by legendary producer Martin Hannett. The two have worked together subsequently in Magazine and Luxuria, and together they have composed one of the album’s centre pieces in ‘Via Sacra’, which in turn lit the spark to the recent Magazine reformation. "I persuaded Howard that it was time to be creative once more. A last chance to be venerable. An offer he couldn’t refuse", says Dave.
