Department S – 2

2007 saw the first Department S activity in 25 years. The threesome of Eddie Roxy, Stuart Mizon and Mike Herbage have been toiling away in dark corners and deep cellars since February of this year and October 8th sees the release of the 4th Department S single and the first for 2 and a half decades. It’s been a long old time in the wilderness and it all came together after several bottles (too much) of red wine in the legendary ‘Ship’ public house in Wardour Street, London W1. Roxy had contacted Herbage via this very website with a view to meeting up to reignite old acquaintances and in the ensuing drunken revelling it was mooted that a new Department S song should be recorded, purely for fun and it was to be a cover that would reflect the spirit of our youth. It was decided that My Coo Cachoo by the wonderful Mr Alvin Stardust was to be given the glam rock / punk treatment, which was also fitting as Alvin was a big hero of the now sadly departed Vaughan Toulouse, original lead singer with Department S. This one’s for you Toulouse. Stuart Mizon had rekindled relations with Herbage some time earlier and was alerted to the possibility of this jolly jape and immediately jumped on board the good ship ‘S’. After several shaky rehearsals an arrangement for the song was worked out and the help was sought of a maestro to help the lads in the studio. Remember, it’d been 25 years since they had recorded together and although Herbage had recorded an album with friends, The Purple Hearts, in the mid 1980’s, things were a whole lot different in 2007. A suitable genius was found in the shape of one Mr Terry Edwards, former Sax man with The Higsons and Gallon Drunk and veteran of many a session with the likes of Robyn Hitchcock and Madness. Terry put the lads through their paces and knocked them into shape and with the help of Mr Mark Bedford of Madness on Bass and Mr Edwards blowing rock’n’roll sax like a bitch and Michelle Brigandage helping out on backing vocals, the end product was, to say the least, surprising. Infact it came out so well that it was decided that the song should be released as a single. Fortunately Mr Edwards ran his own record label – Sartorial, so a home was found. The song itself, although keeping faithful (in the main) to the arrangement of the original, is sonically a million miles away from the original. Think of Led Zeppelin meets the Clash and Adam and the Ants in a brothel and you’ll get the rough idea. The track will be available in 7” ‘Romany Blood’ Red vinyl and download from I -tunes. The B-side sees a rendition of David Bowie’s ‘Cat People’ by Terry Edwards and the Scapegoats. It don’t get no classier than this. More activity has followed, culminating in a recording session in September which included guest appearances by Glen Matlock of Sex Pistols and Marco Pirroni, Adams chief Ant. Mr Edwards once again added brass with strings supplied courtesy of Susie from The Mekons. Though we say so ourselves, the outcome of the 3 days session is nothing short of stunning and more details will follow in due course. The band has now been joined by Sam Burnett of ’79 Mod legends, Back to Zero. Stuart Mizon has now left the band, however, we shall be back in the studio last weekend of September, with possible gigs to follow by the end of the year. Watch this space!

07.09.2009 (UK) Bristol – Academy

08.09.2009 (UK) London – Islington Academy

09.09.2009 (UK) Sheffield – Academy

In the twenty or so years since his brainchild Dead Kennedys officially disbanded, Jello Biafra has made a career of spoken word gigs interspersed with musical collaborations with some of the most compelling figures in underground music. Recording projects and touring with the likes of Melvins, No Means No, DOA, Mojo Nixon and Lard (with Ministry’s Al Jorgensen) among others have kept his "hardcore as political weapon" message sharp, but the lack of his own band made these collaborations usually short-lived and left Biafra with a ton of songs that had never seen the light of day.

Inspired by Iggy Pop’s 60th birthday gig at the Warfield in San Francisco, Biafra laid plans for his own 50th birthday party and finally decided it was time to start a band of his own. Ten years before he had been attempting the same thing with the likes of guitarist Ralph Spight (Victims Family, Freak Accident, Hellworms) and drummer Jon Weiss (Sharkbait, Horsey). They had also previously worked with basist Billy Gould (Faith No More) who was tapped for the new group. After cramming rehearsal for a month the four piece band known as Jello Biafra and the Axis Of Merry Evildoers took the stage in a sold-out two night stand at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall and subsequently spent the next 9 months in rehearsal for an album project. Before entering the studio guitarist Kimo Ball (Freak Accident, Carneyball Johnson, Mol Triffid, Griddle) was recuited and the resulting twin guitar attack took the groups sound to new, noisier heights. The quintet now known as Jello Biafra and The Guantanamo School of Medicine began recording tracks for the upcoming LP/CD "The Audacity Of Hype" slated for release in October 2009, produced by Biafra and engineered by Hip Hop legend and long time Jello co-conspirator Matt Kelley (Hieroglyphics, Tupac, Digital Underground, Victims Family) at Prairie Sun Recording in Cotati, CA and San Francisco’s Hyde Street Studios.

The band’s sound retains some of the the spy-music-on-meth chaos of the DK’s while adding a healthy dose of Detroit style proto-punk mixed with layers of sonic guitar noise, and Weiss’ industrial excursions into metal percussion. Topically, the album explores how our forced Iraqnophobia and Homeland Insecurity continues to feed lawlessness at the top ("The Terror Of Tiny Town") vs. a runaway police state and class war towards the bottom ("Three Stirkes", "Electronic Plantation"). "Clean As A Thistle" becomes more timely every day as "Family Values" blowhards get caught in sinful trysts, while album closer "I Won’t Give Up" offers an age of Obama anthem on how change comes from agitation from below, not glamor and soundbites from the top

Thirty years on, Jello Biafra has made an album that solidifies and expands his uncompromising vision and updates it for the new century, with a powerhouse band that promises to be a terrifying live machine, featuring Jon’s brother Andrew Weiss (Rollins Band,Ween,Butthole Surfers) filling the live bass position recently left vacant by Billy Gould’s return to Faith No More.

Hello all,

My new single "Sunny Misty Morning" is officially released today. It’s the perfect soundtrack to a summer’s day; a feel-good song with psychedelic jazz-punk tendencies. Imagine Burt Bacharach mixed with Kraut Rock and you’re there.

Please buy it and support me, the Monk Club and help keep independent music alive in Richmond!

It’s already been given some airtime by the lovely John Kennedy of XFM who said…
“Liked the song. Played it last week on the show, alongside some other sunshine music.”

The single is available on Spotify, Amazon and iTunes. Just follow the links below. <;field-keywords=Simon+Klein&x=0&y=0>

One of the greatest genre-defining hardcore bands of all time,

Agnostic Front

, has changed the face of music throughout their 25 year long career. The two records that started it all, United Blood and Victim in Pain, are legendary NYHC releases and some of the most sought after pieces of vinyl for record collectors. Finally, these two releases are coming back to life via

Bridge Nine Records

. On November 17th, 2009, Bridge Nine will release a CD version with both albums combined and additionally, will re-release United Blood on 7" and Victim in Pain on 12" LP. Bridge Nine owner Chris Wrenn commented, "Agnostic Front’s debut EP and LP – United Blood and Victim In Pain, are seminal New York Hardcore recordings. To have the opportunity to bring them back to life and make them available again to a new generation of hardcore fans is an incredible honor for Bridge Nine Records. We’re excited to do these re-issues justice and look forward to helping Agnostic Front celebrate the 25 years since the original release of Victim In Pain."

Originally released in 1983, United Blood was Agnostic Front’s first release and was followed shortly thereafter by Victim In Pain in 1984. These albums were a blast of pure New York hardcore that confirmed AF’s status as leaders of the NYHC movement alongside precursors the Cro-Mags and Murphy’s Law. 25 years later, both releases will be made available once again on all formats. Special packaging, vinyl pressings, and more information to come soon.

It may not seem the most obvious job choice for a man who fought the law, even if the law won. But Mick Jones, of

the Clash

, has decided on a more respectable career – by becoming a librarian.

The lead guitarist, who was at the centre of the punk movement, opened his personal rock’n’roll library to the public today, saying he hoped it would inspire and educate music lovers from around the world.

Sprawled across a 3,000 sq ft office space under the roaring Westway, off Portobello Road, west London, close to where Jones formed the Clash with Joe Strummer in 1976, the "guerrilla rock’n’roll public library" will include 10,000 items from Jones’s personal collection, amassed over three decades in the music business.

It is the first time that Jones’s full collection – which includes everything from Beatles knick-knacks and Clash artwork to items the band members wore on stage – will be shown in its entirety.

Jones, 54, said he hoped the five-week "civic endeavour" would challenge what he called the blandness of other music exhibitions.

He described it as a "direct artistic challenge" to the likes of the British Music Experience, the museum of popular music at the O2 in London, that he described as "corporate".

The library – liberated from a lock-up in Acton – is likely to attract Clash fans but Jones said he hoped it would have a wider appeal. "These are relics of the last century. A part of British music history," he said. "It’s a very personal collection but I don’t want the library to be only for Clash fans. I hope it can be a resource and spark people’s imaginations, create an idea of continual creativity."

Visitors to the library need not fear the dreaded library command "hush!" as they wander around the collection of records, pizza boxes from Clash tours, books, camouflage graffiti boots worn by the band on stage, and retro recording equipment. Instead they will listen to a personal soundtrack created by Jones, including songs from Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones.

And instead of peering into rows of cases, visitors will also be invited to interact with the exhibition through videos and computer technology that will help them to recreate old black-and-white punk fanzines.

They may even get a peek at the man himself as throughout the duration of the exhibition, Jones, who shared songwriting credits with Strummer on classic Clash albums including London Calling, Give ‘Em Enough Rope and Combat Rock, before moving on to acts including Big Audio Dynamite, will be recording with up-and-coming bands in his studio next door for the Strummerville Foundation.

For Clash fans, it will be the only exhibition that matters this summer.

Rock’n’Roll Public Library, 18 July – 25 August, 2 Acklam Road, Portobello Green, W10 5XL. 11-7 Wednesday-Sunday. Admission is free

The Feelies finally get reissued as Domino release ‘Crazy Rhythms’ and ‘The Good Earth’ - both out 26 October on Domino with deluxe packaging and bonus tracks - Domino is proud to release two classic albums by the Feelies, the much-loved group of hyperactive new wave/indie rockers from Haledon, New Jersey who did much to influence the sound of college radio in the 1980s, when they reissue ‘Crazy Rhythms’ and ‘The Good Earth’ on 26 October. Timed to follow their September All Tomorrows Parties festival appearance in New York, where they will play ‘Crazy Rhythms’ in it’s entirety, this will be the first time both albums have been available in over a decade. Bonus material including demos, b-sides, EP tracks and new live recordings will be included via download cards inserted into both LPs and CDs, which will also feature deluxe packaging with liner notes by Jim Derogatis and Jim Sullivan. Their debut album ‘Crazy Rhythms’ is a masterwork of perfectly honed minimalist rock n roll that leaps and darts into the corners of the listener’s consciousness, a true sonic achievement that Rolling Stone called one of the 100 Best albums of the 1980s. Fans of the Velvet Underground, Wire and Brian Eno’s early solo albums will surely appreciate their forces at work. It took the Feelies six years to create their follow-up album. 'The Good Earth’ was co-produced by Feelies co-captains Glenn Mercer and Bill Million along with REM’s Peter Buck, a Feelies admirer since his days as a record store clerk. The album was an early release on Coyote Records the label started by Steve Fallon of Maxwell’s in Hoboken and featured the line-up that continues to this day. “CRAZY RHYTHMS’ TRACKS The Boy With the Perpetual Nervousness Fa Ce-La Loveless Love Forces At Work Original Love Everybody’s Got Something to Hide (Except Me and My Monkey) Moscow Nights Raised Eyebrows Crazy Rhythms BONUS DIGITAL DOWNLOAD CARD Fa Ce-La (Single Version) The Boy With the Perpetual Nervousness (Demo Version) Moscow Nights (Demo Version) Crazy Rhythms (Live) I Wanna Sleep In Your Arms (Live) ‘THE GOOD EARTH” TRACKS On The Roof The High Road The Last Roundup Slipping (Into Something) When Company Comes Let’s Go Two Rooms The Good Earth Tomorrow Today Slow Down BONUS DIGITAL DOWNLOAD CARD She Said She Said (Previously only available on EP) Sedan Delivery (Previously only available on EP) Slipping (Into Something) (Live)
