Gypsy Hotel @ Hackney Empire Friday 3 July 2009
We are very happy to announce that we will be checking in to the Hackney Empire this summer for a one-off show featuring the biggest and the best performers we have had at Gypsy Hotel so far.
The Hackney Empire is a beautiful 1300 capacity theatre built in 1901, with 3 floors of seated and standing viewing (all close to the bar!) and most importantly, a huge stage which will allow us to have motorcycles, firewhips, hanging chandeliers and 12 piece bands with no problems!
(This does not mean we are moving out of Bardens Boudoir, we will still be in our favourite sleazy speakeasy basement every 3rd Saturday of the month)
Here’s the confirmed line-up of what is guaranteed to be THE party of the summer:
The Urban Voodoo Machine
–These red’n’black hellraisers wll be celebrating the release of their very fucking long awaited debut album “Bourbon Soaked Gypsy Blues Bop’n’Stroll”
The Fire Tusk Pain Proof Circus
-Fire, motorbikes, straitjackets, chainsaws, whips, knives and flying usherettes: The Fire Tusk Pain Proof Circus drags circus, kicking and screaming into the 21st century on an unstoppable, rock ‘n’ roll rollercoaster ride to Hell!
-Elepant Man Elvis, Norma Guntz and more freakshow cartoon fun!
-Not since The Birthday Party crashed and burned in Berlin, have the twisted sounds of old style decadence been pumped so intensely through distorted amplifiers. London scenesters looking for a scene free of recycled rock, have found expression in The Cesarians cabaret world.
-Trapeze Artist, Neo Burlesque Starlet, Fetish Freak & Twisted Cabaret Performer will be doing her signature performance "Hanging From The Chandelier"!
Lady Ane Angel
-The Fire-Breathing Snake-Charmin’ Beauty from the land of ice!
-Our resident wax-spinner who has toured with the Clash, The Pogues and Gogol Bordello amongst others!
– The Ubermeister of Lounge brings a NEW ORDER and discipline to the usually more relaxed swing style. He has embraced the modern idiom by singing about and reflecting on the world around him. As his music and style originate from his homeland he has preferred to call the whole movement ‘Fatherlounge’ Frank has been accused of racism, an accusation he strongly rebuffs by pointing out that he is on tour with two gentleman from the middle east and another who is both black and Jewish.
Texas Chainsaw Orchestra
-From the people who brought you "The Texas Chainsaw Travelling Horror Picture Show" and original gothabilly band "Texas Chainsaw" comes the all new hard-hitting 13-piece "Texas Chainsaw Orchestra": a hell-raising horror swing ensemble that explodes with big band versions of their spooky rock-n-roll songs, obscure and twisted covers and bizarre tales of the unknown. With a line-up that includes beautiful “corpse-bride” backup singers, an undead brass section, and a cast of Edwardian ghouls, they’re guaranteed to put on one hell of a show!
-The Parisian baguette bashing burlesque brunette!
-Burlesque gone bad in a bathtub full of broken glass!
“If you only have 12 hours to live, spend it at Gypsy Hotel”

The Swiftcover advert sees Pop state: "I got it Swiftcovered. I got insurance on my insurance!"
Following complaints by 12 people about the clip, the Advertising Standards Authority has now ruled that the advert was misleading.
A report published on ASA.org.uk ruled that the advert was deceptive.
"Because the policy was promoted by a well-known musician, which might lead some viewers to believe the policy covered those who worked in entertainment, when it did not, and because Iggy Pop did not have a policy with Swiftcover, we concluded the ad was misleading."
The report said that the advert "must not be broadcast again in its current form".

Tribute to STEPHEN MARSDEN …with the Androidss
Stephen Marsden, anarchic singer for late 70s Christchurch punk rock new wave rock and roll band The Androidss sadly departed this mortal coil in early March. Stephen wrote the anthemic Auckland Tonight and is fondly remembered by family, friends and fans with smiles and quite often an extraordinary tale or two! .
We remember Stephen in an appropriate manner with a rock and roll send off this Saturday night at the Bacco Room (under the Monte Cristo Room 51-53 Nelson Street City) with …
The Spelling Mistakes
Chris Matthews (and his Robot Monkey Orchestra)
Admission is free, though donations gladly received , and doors at 8pm ˆ with first band on at 9pm
Mark Wilson formed the Androidss with Stephen and remembers him accordingly –
Raging at the Gresham Tavern with The Basket Cases when Zephyrs and Cortinas were polluting the atmosphere was cool but nothing compared to The Androidss! In 1978 the party hit the road! Stephen and Eric Marsden(identical twins), Mark and Neil Spence, Aurthur Manawatu, Frank Stenjes, and myself threw together some tunes. Armed with pot, alcohol, guitars and attitude we created a repertiore of Iggy, Bowie, Mick Jagger , Lou Reed ,Blondie,Magazine covers mixed with my eclectic soul searching originals. Aurthur left so Steve and I fronted the band. Playing around Christchurch to small audiences soon lead to us play support for NZ touring bands such as the Dudes , Toy Love and The Swingers. Iggy Pop(James Osterburg) himself saw us perform his songs at the British Hotel in Lyttelton. Stephen and I sat with him and drank whisky .The press quoted him to say" They’re tough as bitches but they’re beautiful"!
Next we headed for Auckland . Androidss suck! was the cry from local punks, skinheads and bootboys, fagends flicked in our faces as we forged our way into the Auckland scene . Shaving off to create a new image, we fitted into the punk scene and the arty new wave culture. This inspired Stephen to write Auckland Tonight! Packing out the "Rhumba Bar", photos in magazines and posters catapulted our popularity and after touring back to Christchurch headlining gigs we recorded our one and only record. Stephens "Auckland Tonight" and my song "Getting Jumpy" went to NO 18 on NZ charts! Steves song was put to video for the popular show "Droppa Kulcha"! We had sort of made it! Lliving the Rock’nRoll lifestyle took its toll and we disbanded! The party was over! Mark split to London, I got married and the others stayed in Auckland eventually coming back to Christchurch, except Steve whom lived the rest of his days devoted to his wife Andrea. I am grateful to have had these experiences with Steve. His incredible enthusiasm and energy coupled with his humour gave me something to hang off; flanking him on his right with my guitar while he sang and I played my solos. I will never forget those times. Last year Stephen got up and sang with the new millenium Androidss. LiberateThe Androidss!
For Stephen May God Bless him.
The Androidss were one of New Zealands greatest punk/new wave bands. If you can -check them out on you tube or hunt out their record.Eugene Vive Le Punk

Comsat Angels / UK Mini Tour October 2009
GLASGOW – ABC – Thursday-22-Oct
MANCHESTER – ACADEMY – Friday-23-Oct
LONDON – ACADEMY – Saturday-24-Oct
The Comsat Angels return…
Following the massive success of the band’s reunion at Sheffield’s Sensoria festival in April, The Comsat Angels have announced a further 3 UK dates in October.
Three major recording contracts, no hit singles, legal complications – and yet the Comsat Angels survived to make thoughtful, expressive guitar music for more than 15 years. Formed in Sheffield, England, at the end of the 70s as Radio Earth, they initially merged the zest of punk with a mature songwriting approach, using strong keyboard elements. The line-up of Stephen Fellows (guitar, vocals), Mik Glaisher (drums), Kevin Bacon (bass) and Andy Peake (keyboards) was to remain constant throughout their early career. ‘Sleep No More’ was their highest UK chart placing at number 51 but after ‘Fiction’ only skimmed the lower reaches of the Top 100, Polydor Records lost patience and the band moved to the CBS Records subsidiary Jive.
The Comsat Angels invested heavily in their recording studio in Sheffield, which subsequently became a focus for the city’s musical creativity. Early in 1990, they announced they were changing their name to Dream Command in the hope that it would bring about a change of fortune, and released the album ‘Fire On The Moon’. Bacon quit the band only to join up again when they reverted to their original name, signing to RPM Records for the release of a new album, ‘My Minds Eye’, in addition to two compilations of radio sessions. ‘The Glamour’, with new members Terry Todd (bass) and Simon Anderson (guitar), saw the Comsat Angels story end in familiar fashion – their superbly crafted, wry rock pop heard only by their existing clutch of die-hard European and American fans.
Active from 1978 to 1995, Comsat Angels have been credited as an inspiration to current bands such as Editors, Interpol and White Lies and have been lovingly championed by film critic Mark Kermode as “the band Joy Division should have been.”
The band will be performing songs from their first three albums only.
Charlie ‘Chalo’ Quintana has announced he is leaving SOCIAL DISTORTION. Filling his space on the drum stool will be Atom Willard, who has played with the likes of Rocket From The Crypt, The Offspring and Angels & Airwaves over the years.
Social D stated,
"After ten amazing years behind the drum kit for Social Distortion, Charlie “Chalo” Quintana has announced he’s moving on to explore other musical opportunities. Charlie had this to say about his departure, “Playing with Social D for ten years was a good time in my life. I was lucky to play on two Social D records and the second solo album, and I am proud to have been part of the band. We hit some spectacular heights which I will never forget – adios amigos!"
THE CIRCLE JERKS are set to record a new album in June, despite Greg Hetson dismissing the idea of a new record just last year. Recently he announced,
"We have been working hard with Producer Dimitri Coats from the Burning Brides and are close to our goal of recording in June. We are all excited and think we have a classic sounding record that you will all enjoy. .Check out his band too…they rock!"
This will be the first new album from the Circle Jerks since 1995’s ‘Oddities, Abnormalities, and Curiosities’.
The first Vive Le Punk festival is on this Sunday at Leamington Spa, The Assembley. Anti Nowhere League, the Members, UK Subs, The Lurkers , 999 , Varukers, Vice Squad and Section 13 all paly from 3pm till 11pm. Ticket info call the box office 01926 523001

The New York Doll and Heartbreaker Johnny Thunders died 18 years ago on Thursday in a New Orleans hotel room. Altho passed off by the authorities at the time as drug-related, the cause of death has never been satisfactorily established. A pioneer of punk rock guitar, Thunders oozed both style and attitude, and was a life-changing performer if you could catch him on a good night. Rest easy, Johnny.

Rat Scabies joins in on Damned cover
The drummer made a guest appearance at the HMV London Forum on the last night of the band’s UK tour – playing on a cover of his band’s 1976 debut single ‘New Rose’, widely considered to be the UK’s first punk release.
Introducing Scabies, frontman Jesse ‘The Devil’ Hughes said: "One thing I love about playing in London is you can play with your friends too. Everybody, Rat Scabies."
The track was one of a series of covers featured in the set, along with Stealers Wheel‘s ‘Stuck In The Middle With You’, which famously featured in Quentin Tarantino‘s 1972 film ‘Reservoir Dogs’, as well as THE ROLLING STONES1971 classic ‘Brown Sugar’,
EL DUCE died April 19th 1997 , hit by a train while drunk.
El Duce was best known as the drummer and lead singer of the rock group The Mentors. He rose to national prominence in 1985 as a result of the U.S. Senate ( P.M.R.C. ) hearings regarding "obscene lyrics" in rock music, which named publicly the Mentors as the worst exponent of such lyrics in music. In addition to his musical career El Duce also was employed frequently as a bit player or extra in many motion picture, music video, and television productions. His comic visage and friendly manner made him a show business natural. In January 1997 El Duce had appeared on the Jerry Springer Show in a show devoted to Shock Rock, and in the National Enquirer and other tabloids domestically and internationally regarding his claim that he was approached by Courtney Love to kill Kurt Cobain. The last musical performance by El Duce was given on Friday, April 18th, at Al’s Bar in Downtown Los Angeles.

LTD EDITION 7” SINGLE IN SUPPORT OF “RECORD STORE DAY” 18th APRIL
Tom Waits releases an exclusive ltd edition 7” single through Anti- Records on 18th April in support of ‘Record Store Day’. Waits, a firm believer in the importance of the independent record shop, had this to say; “The record store is the livery stable where I can tie up, feed and groom my ears.” Recorded during last summer’s critically acclaimed “Glitter & Doom” tour, the single features “Lucinda/Ain’t Goin’ Down to the Well” (recorded at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA) and “Bottom of the World” (recorded at the Edinburgh Playhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland) on the flipside.
‘Record Store Day’ is a celebration of the independent record shop. The event, which was launched in 2008, has now become an annual fixture involving 1000’s of independent record shops and musicians across the world. Supported by artists such as Jack White, Paul McCartney, Metallica and many others, the occasion features exclusive CD and vinyl releases, instore appearances and promotional products created especially for the event.
Waits, who is currently working on material for a new album, drew rave reviews during his European tour last year. The Guardian had this to say of his Edinburgh show; “Waits is an utterly magnetic performer…it seems less like you’ve bought a ticket to a concert than to a different world.” The Times concurred; “Waits wove a spell as intricate and engaging as that of any performer I can remember seeing on a musical stage,” whilst the Daily Telegraph declared; “For a couple of hours every night on the Glitter and Doom tour, with Waits as lightning conductor, whipping up the band, stirring up his demons and roaring up a storm, he puts on what is, quite simply, the greatest show on earth.”
