ART PUNK SAMPLE - EXHIBITION

Exhibition runs 13th July – Aug 4th 2012 Private View 13th July 6pm – 9:30pm

The Sex Pistols first gig, art clothes shop “Pollocks”, designer Max Clendinning, Cult 80s band Fad Gadget, peripatetic art exhibition “Turtle Salon”, incidental music for Sex And The City and C.I.S.

– one person links these disparate things, drummer and art maker Nick Cash who is showing his collage, cut and paste montage works created from the mid-1980s to the present day.
Cash came up with his own process of removing ink and surfaces of images using sellotape to transfer them to his cut-up compositions.

Sometimes these “sampled” collages are formally constructed and other times more random juxtapositions. Cash says that his musical experiences, as drummer with Fad Gadget for 6 years (and five albums) and later with prag VEC, The Lines, unmen and The Members connect to the artwork, the notion of repeated riffs, themes and improvisations being common to both mediums.

In 1976, following a year at St Martins School of Art where he fell in with Glen Matlock and was one of the few to witness the birth of The Sex Pistols, Nick created his own line of art clothes which he sold in his shop “Pollocks” in Brixton. Writer Jon Savage and Polystyrene of band X-ray Spex were customers and now The Museum Of London has some items in their collection.

The subsequent collage of his life sees Nick as post- war furniture and curio dealer, musician, father and, recently, art curator – his exhibition “Avant Craft” about architect/designer Max Clendinning (highlighting his own collecting obsession with 1960s furniture) was at the Chelsea Space within the Chelsea Art College site at Pimlico earlier this summer.
All the while Nick has been making these artworks, mostly for his own amusement – now they are on display for yours.
