STEVE JONES IN STOOGES?

Will the Ex Pistol, Steve Jones join Iggy and the Stooges. Seems it could be getting closer!

Punk icon Iggy Pop is taking Sex Pistols star Steve Jones’ offer to join The Stooges seriously.

Jones offered to step in and fill the void left by the death of Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton.

He told the Los Angeles Times that he and Pop had been talking about Jones becoming an honorary member of The Stooges for upcoming tour dates, and now the ‘Lust For Life’ hitmaker admits he has been talking to the ex Pistol.

He says, “I talked to Steve, and if I wanted an extra guitar, he’d be the guy to call.”

MARKY RAMONE MOBBED!

Ramones legend Marky Ramone and his solo band got a lot more than they bargained for when traveling south of the border to play for Mexican fans last weekend. Here is the tale as posted on Marky’s Myspace blog:

Everyone’s ok, but things got way over the top concerning the safety of the band and out of hand for Marky and The Blitzkrieg at [Saturday] night’s show in Mexico. The van taking the band back to the hotel was besieged by fans resulting in an injury to one of the touring party protecting the exiting band. The security at the venue did their best, but were overwhelmed by the numbers and intensity of the situation. They had never had to deal with anything like that before.

In trying to leave the venue, there was a pile up at the exit door as fans rushed to Marky on his attempted exit. Surrounded by over zealous fans pounding on the windows of the band van, cracking the windshield, one fan clinging to the side of the vehicle was thrown into on coming traffic. He was ok as later he and a friend eventually caught up with the van in a taxi shouting and waving at their hero.

80s Pylon rocker Dies

80s New Wave Rocker Dies While Driving

02/26/2009
.
(Billboard) Randall  Bewley, guitarist and founding member of new wave band Pylon, died Wednesday (Feb. 25) afternoon after a heart attack on Monday in his hometown of Athens, Georgia, according to a report by The Athens Banner-Herald.

Bewley was driving on Monday (Feb. 23) when his van drifted off the road and tipped over, according to an email circulated by bandmate Vanessa Hay.

Pylon was formed in 1979 by University of Georgia art students Bewley, bassist Michael Lachowski, drummer Curtis Crowe and Hay – then Vanessa Briscoe – on vocals. The group was part of Athens’ art oriented dance party scene that also included groups like the B-52’s and R.E.M., each of which have often cited Pylon as a favorite and influence.

IGGY GOES JAZZ

After his disappointing sell out with ‘THAT’ car insurance ad we now hear that Iggy Pop hopes to record a jazz album. Apparently he is ‘bored with guys playing loud guitars’ and wants to get intouch with his jazz side. Of course Stooges guitarist Ron Ashton  died in January. The Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones was rumoured as a replacement. Jones played with Iggy on numerous albums  including Cold Metal.

SIOUXSIE BOX SET

SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES

AT THE BBC

3-CD & DVD SET

1ST JUNE 2009

So impressed were they by Siouxsie and the Banshees, that legend has it that John Peel and his producer John Walters attempted to get the BBC to sign the Banshees before the group signed to Polydor. Fitting then that this stunning 84-track, all digitally-remastered, 4-disc hardback book set comprises exclusive BBC sessions, live concert tracks and TV performances recorded by Siouxsie and the Banshees between 1977 and 2001. It comprises 3 audio discs plus a real gem in the form of a 29-track DVD of the band’s best TV performances. All of the featured tracks have been hand picked by the band and the package includes a fantastic 30-page booklet with extensive sleeve notes by journalist Paul Morley, interviews with all of the band members and a unique and insightful introduction written by Siouxsie.

The set features alternative versions of 18 classic hit singles including Hong Kong Garden, Playground Twist, Happy House, Cities In Dust, Christine, Wheels On Fire, Dear Prudence, Peek-a-Boo and Kiss Them For Me.

Discs 1 and 2

These feature key session tracks from 1977 to 1987 and a concert recording from the Apollo Theatre in Oxford in 1985. They include the complete John Peel sessions alongside sessions recorded for Kid Jensen, Richard Skinner and Janice Long.

Disc 3

This contains highlights from the band’s BBC concert recordings at the Apollo Theatre in Oxford and the Royal Albert Hall, London in 1988, where the band performed a storming set, three nights in a row to a sell-out crowd. Highlights include a breathtaking Last Beat Of My Heart, Christine and a rip-roaring, crowd-pleasing, end of show version of Hong Kong Garden.

Disc 4

This 29-track DVD of the band’s BBC TV performances features their complete Old Grey Whistle test broadcasts from 1978, 1982 and 1985, the Something Else performances from 1979 and 1980, the Rock Goes To College broadcast from 1981 and the band’s complete Top of the Pops performances, complete, in places, with cheesy intros! All in all it serves as a fantastic visual documentary of the band, beginning with the OGWT performances of tracks from their 1978 debut album; Metal Postcard and Jigsaw Feeling through the dark years of Juju, performed for the Rock Goes to College show and culminating with the beautifully pure pop bliss of Kiss Them For Me from Superstition.

MADSTOCK RETURNS!

MADSTOCK 2009

On Friday 17th July, London’s Victoria Park will see the return of England’s pop royalty as Madness bring Madstock to the East End. With a full supporting cast, this is the first Madstock of the new century and follows their sold out Christmas 2008 tour (including an amazing night at the O2) which saw The Guardian celebrate ‘the longest run of classic singles of any band since the 60s’. Lead singer Suggs is looking forward to what is sure to be one of the biggest shows of the summer:

“Madstock for us is musically, socially and geographically our homecoming. There is no other day like it, for us, our families and for the people that come to see us.”

Madness are one of the most important bands in UK music history. Their incredible run of hit singles beginning in the late 70’s are part of the nation’s consciousness. No band’s back catalogue deserves its place in the treasured musical archive of Britain more than this. Few bands can lay claim to the kind of immediacy that Madness’ classic singles possess and, 30 years since their debut single, ‘The Prince’, the seven remain a vital part of the cultural lifeblood of the country.

As with the Christmas tour, Madstock will be a chance for fans to hear the classics but also an opportunity to hear tracks from the forthcoming new Madness album, ‘The Liberty Of Norton Folgate’, due for release in May of this year. The new album, the first from Madness since 1999’s ‘Wonderful’, saw The Guardian in that same review bestow critical acclaim on the new material noting that ‘their touch hasn’t deserted them’.

Tickets are priced at £35 (subject to booking fee) and are available from the band site at www.madness.co.uk. Details of the full supporting cast will be announced shortly
