Signing to noted punk label Slash Records, they later impacted on rootsier end of the mid-80s Paisley Underground movement.

The current line-up features Phil Alvin and fellow founder-members John Bazz and Bill Bateman, plus lead guitarist Keith Wyatt.

BOOGALOO RADIO ON THE AIR!

Pub-based radio station BOOGALOO RADIO is holding a special launch-party this month!

Based at The Boogaloo on Archway Road in North London, it’s the world’s first and only 24/7 online radio station broadcasting inside a pub.

The storied boozer has been making a name for itself in rock’n’roll circles for the best part of two decades. Various Libertines worked behind the bar, Shane MacGowan lived upstairs and the likes of Nick Cave, Joe Strummer, The Streets, Sinead O’Connor, Primal Scream, Ken Kesey, Howard Marks and many more have been regulars over the years.

Boogaloo Radio was founded by DJ Jenn Crothers and Gerry O’Boyle, the landlord of The Boogaloo, and former owner of the infamous Filthy Mac Nasty’s pub.

Gerry says “Boogaloo Radio is the most exciting thing we have ever done. We are able to share the pub, its musical heritage, its amazing presenting talent and the chaos of operating an online radio station broadcasting to 227 countries from an old bin shed in the pub beer garden in true punk rock guerrilla style. If we were a book, we’d be Please Kill Me…

Jenn adds, “Using the original 1960s American FM radio format where the presenter is also the curator, alongside modern technology we’ve built a direct bridge between host and listener, creating that feeling of listening to one of your good friends. It’s an old formula, brought to you by modern technology, and we’re doing it from the back of a pub. The aim is for listeners to feel like they are in on the excitement. The pub has become the station and vice versa. Our plan is to live stream everything that happens – gigs, debates, comedy, pub quizzes and DJ sets.”

Boogaloo Radio DJs include the likes of pub rock supremo and Stiff Records founder Dave Robinson (pictured),  The Libertines, Bernard Butler, Jack White’s Third Man Books, Ace Records, The Magic Numbers, Shane MacGowan and David Morrissey, while so far guests have included Holly Johnson, Clem Burke, Blood Red Shoes, Bez from Happy Mondays,  Irvine Welsh, Madness and Johnny Marr.

The launch night takes place at The Boogaloo – where else?! – on Thursday 25 January. You can listen live at booglaooradio.com.

ASH GRAY ON THE WIRE!

Texan rocker ASH GRAY is set to release a new album at the end of the month.

Originally from Austin and now based in Sheffield, the guitarist recorded parts of Chicken Wire in both cities, using various friends and acquaintances from the local music scenes.

Following on from 2014’s Once I Got Burned, the album was mixed by Grammy-nominated Austin producer Chris ‘Frenchie’ Smith (Young Heart Attack, Meat Puppets, Datsuns, …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead), and is packaged in a sleeve designed by renowned Sheffield poster artist Martin Bedford.

Speaking about the recording, Gray says, “The album represents a nice bridge that’s been developing between Sheffield and Austin in the three years that I’ve called Sheffield home. I met so many amazing musicians in Sheffield and have tightened connections with old and new acquaintances in Austin since I began working on these recordings and I was interested in trying to include everyone that I’d been playing with.”

First coming to prominence in the UK at the end of the 90s with punkgrass outfit THE HIGH-CLASS FAMILY BUTCHERS, Gray returned to Austin where he fronted glamsters STUNGUN, before relocating to New York City to play guitar with legendary biker band CYCLE SLUTS FROM HELL and form his own psych outfit ASH GRAY & THE GIRLS.

Gray plays a series of dates across Germany and The Netherlands in early February, before returning to play an official album launch in Sheffield. Full dates are….

2 Feb – Geyger Gallery, Berlin (D)
4 Feb – Barnaby’s Blues Bar, Brunswick (D)
5 Feb – Hoppla, Cologne (D)
8 Feb – Elo Bar, Bremen (D)
9 Feb – O’Ceallaigh Irish Pub, Groningen (NL)
10 Feb – Janja’s Musik Bar, Cuxhaven (D)
11 Feb – Künstlerhaus Faktor, Hamburg (D)

Chicken Wire is set for release on 26 January on gatefold vinyl, CD and download through Labelship.

HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD SINNERS!

Spanish garage-punks HOLLYWOOD SINNERS return their long-awaited fourth album.

Khöme Kakkä follows on from the highly-rated Disastro Garantito released through Dirty Water Records back in 2011.

Speaking about the long delay to their return, guitarist/singer Edu Sinner says, “I started a business in Madrid six years ago called Pandora’s Vox which is a bar and 21 rehearsal room studio for bands, and put all my energy into it. So Hollywood Sinners almost stopped entirely. We were only doing a few gigs each year, and not a lot each month as we all used to do. But now we have a new LP and we are again ready to rock!”

Formed in Toledo back in 2001, the trio have become a regular attraction at garage festivals across Europe. The new album was recorded with legendary producers Mike Mariconda and Jorge Explosion at the all-analogue Circo Perotti in Gijon, birthplace of garage opuses from the likes of Billy Childish, The Masonics, Holly Golightly and The Cynics.

FAST EDDIE CLARKE R.I.P.

News has reached us this morning that legendary guitarist Fast Eddie Clarke, one third of the classic line-up of MOTÖRHEAD, has passed away.

According to former manager Doug Smith, he died in hospital last night where he was being treated for pneumonia. He was 67.

Clarke, who had previously played with Harlem R&B legend Curtis Knight – a role once held by Jimi Hendrix – joined Motörhead in 1976, initially as second guitarist to Larry Wallis, before the latter quit, leaving the classic trio of Clarke, Lemmy and Philthy Animal Taylor.

Over six years and as many albums, they’d become one of the biggest, best loved and most influential heavy rock bands to emerge from the UK.

After Motörhead, Clarke formed the band FASTWAY, who’d enjoyed a resurgence in recent years.

Clarke was the last surviving member of the classic Motörhead line-up, Lemmy and Taylor having died in 2015.

Vive Le Rock sends love and condolences to Fast Eddie’s family, friends and many fans the world over.

FUNDING LAUNCHED FOR CARDIACS’ TIM!

A crowdfunding page has been set up to help pay for CARDIACS’ main man Tim Smith’s healthcare costs.

Tim suffered a cardiac arrest in 2008, leaving him with severe brain damage and a neurological condition called dystonia.

Tim has limited ability to move and speak, but treatment has shown some improvement in his condition. However, a shortfall in funding has meant that his treatment has been inconsistent.

It is believed that, through crowdfunding, Tim will improve enough to use a computer to make music.

Formed in 1977, Cardiacs developed a highly original sound, fusing punk, psych and progressive influences, earning them little in the way of commercial success, but a loyal international following with such bands as Radiohead, Blur Faith No More and Napalm Death citing them as an influence.

Since Tim’s illness musicians and fans alike have been involved in numerous fundraising activities including benefit gigs and a tribute album. For more information and/or to donate, go to Tim’s JustGiving page.

The URBAN VOODOO MACHINE kick off the New Year with a brand new single.

‘January Blues’ is a state-of-the-nation address from the pen of band founder Paul-Ronney Angel, “part melancholic folk ballad and part punk protest song sparing no emotions and hitting the truth hard!”

The song is coupled with a cover of the GLEN CAMPBELL classic ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’ in honour of the genre-straddling music legend who sadly passed away in 2017, as well as Angel’s much-missed UVM sparring partner NICK MARSH, who’d feature the song in his solo sets.

Recorded at East London’s Space Eko Studio by Alex MacGowan, the single features stirring new artwork by Johnny Stingray.

Released today, the single is available on download on from Friday 5 January via iTunes and Amazon.
