HAWKWIND RELEASE ROUNDHOUSE SHOW!

HAWKWIND are set to release a new live album in December, recorded at their first Roundhouse show in 40 years.

The band returned to the iconic London venue in May of this year, 45 years on from the legendary Greasy Truckers Party with MAN and BRINSLEY SCHWARZ, when the band recorded the original version of ‘Silver Machine’ with Bob Calvert on vocals.

The new 2 CD/DVD set At The Roundhouse features a set rich in highlights from their 70s career, including ‘Born To Go’, ‘You’d Better Believe It’, ‘The Golden Void’ and ‘Steppenwolf’ plus tracks from their two most recent Top 40 albums The Machine Stops and Into The Woods.

For the encore, the band were joined by  guitarist Phil Campbell on ‘Brainbox Pollution’ and ‘Silver Machine’.

“Yes, it was really good fun playing back at The Roundhouse,” explains Dave Brock. “After not playing there since 1977 (when we had Motörhead support us), it brought back many fine memories for me. Great venue!!”

The set is completed by a DVD of the gig, bringing John Moules’ incredible lightshow into your frontroom.

Set for release on 8 December through Cherry Red, At The Roundhouse is available to pre-order here.

SAINT AGNES ROCK AGAINST VIOLENCE!

Garage-punks SAINT AGNES are to headline this year’s Rock Against Violence event in London next month.

Now in its sixth year, RAV is the annual music event benefiting Solace Women’s Aid, a London-based charity that supports women and children affected by domestic and sexual violence, helping more than 11,000 survivors each year.

This year Solace are partnering with Roadkill Records for a night featuring some of London’s hottest new bands at the O2 Islington in London on Thursday 16 November. The full line-up is as follows….

SAINT AGNES formed in 2014 and have released four sell-out singles and a live EP. With their gritty, DIY work ethic they have risen from the underground to claim their place as one of London’s most compelling and authentic live bands with a devoted following. They draw their audience in with songs of love and betrayal and electrify with their fuzzed out, hook-laden, desert stomp. Watch the video for ‘Merry Mother of God Go Round’ and other singles on their website.

DeadCoast

DEAD COAST are a 4- piece psych / blues / surf / garage band based in London. They released their debut album Shambolic in 2016, followed by their first ever US tour in 2017 in support of their standalone single titled ‘The Silt’, including appearances at SXSW and gigs in New York, Chicago and LA. Check out ‘The Silt’ and Shambolic here.

the wild things

THE WILD THINGS are a 4-piece alternative rock band from West London. Drawing on early influences as wide as the Beach Boys and Foo Fighters by way of a Weezer pop-tinged lean, the band’s recent output has seen them pull in a rockier, dirtier vibe recalling The Smashing Pumpkins and Band of Skulls via Wolf Alice. Read more and listen to free tracks on their website.

sly persuaders

THE SLY PERSUADERS make raucous garage rock soaked in searing guitars, surf-pop beats and layers of gypsy-psych percussion. With a reputation for hard work, coupled with gang-style backing vocals and anthemic choruses, they’ve cultivated a respectable following on the live London music scene. Visit the Sly Persuaders’ Bandcamp to hear their eponymous debut album, which was released in February this year via Roadkill Records.

plum

PLUM aka Shona Maguire is an electro-pop producer and multi-instrumentalist creating intricate, unique and quirky music. With a live set combining home-made floor pad samplers, filters, various buttons and triggers, she has been described as a bit of a mad scientist. Shona became the first female artist ever to win ‘Best Electronic’ category in the Scottish Alternative Music Awards in 2013. Listen to her album The Seed here.

“We’re really thrilled and grateful that these talented bands are all helping us campaign against domestic and sexual abuse,” says Mary Mason, Solace’s CEO. “There is such a widespread problem across the capital with thousands of women and children needing support after experiencing horrific abuse. Gigs like these reach new audiences and help raise awareness of the issues as well as the services that can support women and girls to be safe, recover and live independently free from abuse.”

Tickets priced £15 are on sale here or £18 on the night. The event will also include a silent auction and raffle prizes to raise additional funds for Solace, including holiday accommodation, private bartending services, collector’s items, beauty products and many more.

If you’re unable to attend, please consider making a donation to Solace Women’s Aid here.

MARK ‘PORKCHOP’ HOLDER EXCLUSIVE!

Tennessee punk-blues guitar ace MARK ‘PORKCHOP’ HOLDER returns with a new album next month and he’s sharing a track exclusively with Vive Le Rock!

‘Be Righteous’ is drawn from the BLACK DIAMOND HEAVIES founder’s second album Death And The Blues, which comes just nine months after his debut solo album Let It Slide.

Once again the album was laid down at Tiny Buzz studios in his hometown of Chattanooga, where he was joined by bassist Travis Kilgore and drummer Doug Bales on eight new originals, plus covers of Don Nix’s ‘Nobody Wants To Cry’,  Junior Kimbrough’s ‘Sad and Lonely Nights’ and the traditional song ‘Billy The Kid’,  made famous by Marty Robbins.

“The philosophy of recording this album,” he says, “was to document the increased live dynamic of a band that has
now played a couple of hundred shows together. It’s a power trio record…

“‘Be Righteous’ starts with an old biker saying. To me, the message of the song is simple; if you lead a dog-eat-dog life, you’re bound to meet a bigger, hungrier dog.”

Death And The Blues is set for release on 3 November on limited vinyl, CD, digital and streaming formats via Alive Naturalsound Records. You can pre-order the vinyl here.

J.D. HANGOVER VIDEO EXCLUSIVE!

Fast-rising punk-blues duo J.D. HANGOVER have a new video which they’re premiering exclusively with Vive Le Rock!

Fusing Delta bottleneck blues with Farfisa-rockin’ garage groove and Suicide-style propulsive beats, ‘Mr Williamson’ is the second track to be released from their debut self-titled mini-album, which is set for release through Annibale Records (Shivas, Dead Coast etc) on 17 November.

J.D. Hangover comprises Stiv Cantarelli and Roberto Villa of Italian blues-punk legends STIV CANTARELLI & THE SILENT STRANGERS, whose last album Banks Of The Lea – recorded at East End garage-lab Gizzard Studios with sometime Membranes and Monkey Island guitarist Pete Bennett producing – was released to great acclaim in 2014, including a 9/10 review in Vive Le Rock!

This time around, the pair have ensconced themselves in Villa’s L’Amor Mio Non Muore analogue studio in the town of Forli, laying down the six tracks to the beat of a 1972 Roland TR-77 drum machine.

Having only recently played their first dates, opening for ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO, the duo are next scheduled to support BOSS HOG in Cesena, Italy on 8 November. They’re currently planning UK gigs and festivals for 2018.

FIRST NEW SCIENTISTS TRACKS IN 30 YEARS!

Legendary Aussie punks THE SCIENTISTS have returned with their first new recordings in 30 years!

The band, fronted by guitarist and singer Kim Salmon, have reformed sporadically and in various permutations since splitting in 1987. They last hooked up in 2016 to celebrate the release of their box set anthology A Place Called Bad, dropping into London to play a scorching set at the Lexington.

This latest incarnation finds Salmon, guitarist Tony Thewlis and bassist Boris Sujdovic reconnecting with drummer Leanne Chock from their classic Weird Love and later Sedition periods. The fruits of the reunion are a Scientists-style overhaul of French 60s legend Jacques Dutronc’s ‘Mini Mini Mini’ coupled with the first ever officially released studio version of Scientists rarity ‘Perpetual Motion’.

The band celebrate the release with a series of Australian dates starting next week.

Both tracks are available to stream and download here.

RAMONES 40TH ANNIVERSARY ROCKET!

THE RAMONES’ classic third album is to get a deluxe expanded 40th Anniversary reissue next month.

Rocket To Russia was originally released at the height of punk in the autumn of 1977, preceded and followed by the classic singles ‘Sheena Is A Punk Rocker’ and ‘Rockaway Beach’.

Produced by Tony Bongiovi and engineered by Ed Stasium, it was the last Ramones album to feature original drummer Tommy Ramon behind the kit (he would return to produce their next album).  Its front cover art reprised their debut’s brick wall motif with a photo by manager Danny Fields, while the rear featured a cartoon by Punk magazine founder John Holmstrom.

Housed in a 12″ x 12″ hardback book, the lavish 40th Anniversary 3CD/1LP  reissue will feature both the original mix of the 14-track album, plus a new back-to-basics ‘Tracking Mix’ by Stasium.  He explains, “When putting together this new Tracking Mix, I decided to include the versions of ‘I Don’t Care’ and ‘It’s A Long Way Back to Germany,’ since they were recorded during the Rocket To Russia sessions at Mediasound, and are completely different takes that have never been heard before. ‘Sheena’ has been omitted, as it was recorded in a totally different session a few months prior, in-between the Leave Home and Rocket To Russia albums.”

The second disc contains two dozen rare and unreleased recordings, including rough mixes from sessions at Mediasound and The Power Station. There’s also an early version of ‘Needles And Pins’ with Tommy on drums, the B-side single mix of ‘Babysitter’, an alternative version of ‘It’s A Long Way Back To Germany’, with Dee Dee on vocals, an original radio promo with Joey Ramone, and more.

RockettoRussia

Disc 3 features a complete, previously unreleased, live recording from a show at Glasgow Apollo on 19 December 1977, recorded just days before the show at London’s Rainbow which yielded the classic live album It’s Alive.

Set for release through Rhino on 24 November, it’s available to pre-order here.

THE PENNY DROPS!

Multinational gypsy-ska-punks THE PENNY BLACK REMEDY return next month with their first new album in four years.

Maintaining Dignity In Awkward Situations follows on from 2013’s acclaimed Inhale… Exhale… OK, Now You Can Panic! and was co-produced by MORRISSEY and POLECATS guitarist Boz Boorer at his Portugal studio and in Dubrovnik, Croatia, where the band nucleus of Keith M Thomson and Marijana Hajdarhodzic are now based.

The pair were joined on the sessions by former UK SUBS bassist Paul Slack, guitarist Jeremy Mendonca, violinist Basia Bartz and drummer Jamie Shaw, along with various special guests including Dave Ruffy and Segs Jennings from THE RUTS and ex-CANNIBALS guitarist Jeff Mead.

Originally formed in London in 2004, where they hosted the monthly Bam-A-Lam club nights at the legendary 12 Bar Club. They released their debut album No One’s Fault But Your Own in 2009. Says Thomson of the band’s music, “The fact that most of the songs are about death, lost love, living in a constant state of crippling paranoid fear and/or coping with the daily grind of everyday life is irrelevant. Encouraging people to sing loudly and out of tune about the absurdity of general existence seems to instil a sense of comfort and emotional unity…I think.”

Maintaining Dignity In Awkward Situations is set for release on mono del mundo through Cadiz on 24 November. It’s available to pre-order here.

The band play a special launch party on the day of the album’s release at The Islington, 1 Tolpuddle Street, London. Tickets are available here.
