KICK OUT THE CONFITURES!

Cult French rockers SOGGY have just had their sole album reissued.

The Detroit-channelling band only released one single during their lifetime – 1981’s ‘Waiting For The War’ – but the eponymous album was put together from available recordings by French label Memoire Neuve in 2008 in a limited edition of 500 copies.

The album has now been reissued by US label Outer Battery on white/black splatter vinyl and a limited edition of 300 on silver vinyl.

Soggy were originally formed in the northern city of Rheims in 1978, playing covers by the likes of ALICE COOPER, BLACK SABBATH, THE STOOGES and the MC5, before developing their own original material and a massive following. A major deal eluded the band, however, apparently stemming from their refusal to write French language songs, and the band split in ’82 before a mooted support tour with JUDAS PRIEST.

Commenting on the album’s re-release, the band say, “We’re stoked that the album will finally be released after all these years, and pleasantly surprised that despite the intervening years there’s still a demand to hear these songs.”

More recently, frontman Beb has returned to the stage for the first time in 35 years to perform ‘Waiting…’ with US band THE SHRINE at France’s Hellfest. Further activity with the band is likely, as well as a full Soggy rockumentary.

You can read a review of Soggy in the latest edition of Vive Le Rock!

RADIO STARS ANNOUNCE FINAL GIG!

radio_stars

Class of ’77 new wavers RADIO STARS are set to reform for one final gig next year.

The ‘Nervous Wreck’ hitmakers will reunite for a 40th Anniversary show at London’s legendary 100 Club on Friday 17 March. Featuring founder members Andy Ellison and Martin Gordon, former guitarist Ian McLeod will also make an appearance with other guests expected to join in during the night.

Featuring Andy from 60s freakbeaters JOHN’S CHILDREN and Martin from SPARKS, Radio Stars evolved out of powerpoppers JET in 1977, signing to Chiswick Records for the iconic debut single ‘Dirty Pictures’ and making their TV debut on fellow John’s Children alumnus MARC BOLAN’s show Marc with the classic ‘No Russians In Russia’. They tasted chart success with ‘Nervous Wreck’ but split up in ’79 following the release of their second album.

Although Radio Stars have reformed periodically over the years, it is stressed that this is their last ever gig, with the band set to retire the very next day.

Tickets are available here.

DAMNED AND RUTS FOR CAMDEN ROCKS!

the-damned-colour-portrait-c-morat-photography-2015

Current Vive Le Rock cover stars THE DAMNED are one of the first acts to be announced for next year’s Camden Rocks.

Other acts set to descend on the North London rock’n’roll enclave on Saturday 3 June are Ginger Wildheart’s HEY! HELLO!, ORANGE GOBLIN, URBAN VOODOO MACHINE and purveyors of Vive Le Rock‘s album of 2016, RUTS DC.

Festival organiser Chris McCormack says, “We’re ecstatic to have such a legendary punk band like The Damned playing Camden Rocks Festival this year, they were one of the first bands I saw play live up in Newcastle, and a band I’ve seen more than any other – a huge inspiration.

“As always, this year will be made up of all the best high-energy guitar bands we can get our hands on, along with all the best new bands we find through our Camden Rocks Presents shows we put on throughout the year in the lead up. Even I’d buy a ticket for this!”

The Damned’s Captain Sensible reveals, “Camden Market is partially responsible for the sartorial disaster that is Captain Sensible, as I’ve purchased more stage clobber there than anywhere else. And Camden was punk central in the 70s too, so in some respects The Damned playing Camden Rocks is a return to the scene of the crime. We’ll probably time-warp the set list to reflect the 40th Anniversary of punk, so expect a lively one!”

ruts

“It must be the most vibrant of local festivals in London,” adds Segs of The Ruts DC. “Loads of great bands and loads of lovely people bringing even more life to the heart of Camden Town. Having attended, enjoyed and played as guests in various bands over the years, The Ruts DC are very excited to be playing Camden Rocks in 2017 in their own right!”

With more than 250 appearing at 25 of Camden Town’s best clubs and bars – including the Electric Ballroom, Underworld, Dingwalls, The Black Heart, The Monarch and more – next year’s event expands to include iconic venue KOKO, whose 40 year history as both Camden Palace and The Music Machine, make it one of the capital’s most important venues.

Other bands already confirmed include Young Kato, Stone Broken, Big Boy Bloater and the Limits, MOSES, Screaming Eagles, Imperial Leisure, Habitats, The Main Grains, Courage My Love, Black Orchid Empire, MassMatiks, Hands Off Gretel, Fizzy Blood, Broken Witt Rebels, Forte, Stereo Juggernaut, Black Sixteen, Lucie Barat & The Au Revoirs, HVMM, Halflives, Weirds, Frauds, Alana Bondi, Itamar, Oxygen Thief, The Franklys, CUTE CUTE DEΔTH, Heel, The Kut and Secret Cameras, with more than 200 still to be announced.

A limited number of early bird tickets priced £35 (plus booking fee) are available here.

SHARKS EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE!

In the spirit of demented Xmas, SHARKS have created a Trump Doom video, and have chosen to premiere it exclusively with Vive Le Rock!

The clip for the song ‘Can’t Get The Devil Outside Of Me’ is a taster for the band’s new album Killers Of The Deep, which is available from 3Ms Records from 27 January 2017.

The video is directed by singer Steve ‘Snips’ Parsons and edited by Jack Judd of Floodwater Films. Steve says, “Personally I couldn’t care less about Trump in the White House – he follows a lame duck, an idiot, a southern boy who couldn’t keep his pecker in his pants and so on. What does concern me is the out of date notion that the USA is the guardian of the ‘free world’. There is no Free World. In this life you pay for everything, including a stairway to heaven, remote control weapons and the new Sharks album – caveat emptor.”

Sharks will play The 100 Club in London on 8 February – tickets – and Bleach upstairs at the Hair and Hounds in Brighton on 9 February – tickets. HIGH TREASON will support at the 100 Club and rising star SAM WALKER at Bleach.

NORTH-EAST PUNKS HELP THE HOMELESS!

dsc_0018-tk-copy

Punks from the North-East of England have come together to record a fundraising single for the homeless.

The cover of the RALPH McTELL and ANTI-NOWHERE LEAGUE standard ‘Streets Of London’ – relocated on this occasion to Newcastle – was the brainchild of punk couple Tony and Karen Houghton of the band PRETTY ANARCHISTS. They called on members of other punk bands from the region, as well as studios and local service providers, who were only too happy to get involved.

Funds raised by sales of the single will go to Newcastle homeless charity The People’s Kitchen.

Recorded at Shagnut Studios in Billingham and BoomChang Records in Newcastle, punks who took part in the sessions included members of LOGOZ from Ashington, Tyneside band THE Vs, Billingham-based ZEITGEIST 77, Sunderland’s SPITFIRE BULLETS, Gateshead-based THE BAND FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION and Cramlington’s ALL OUT ATTACK.

Says Tony, “When you see people sleeping rough in the snow and rain, it makes you realise how lucky we all are with our warm homes and well stocked food cupboards. I wanted to make people stop and think about the needs of others and for them to buy the CD so that more funds can go to this deserving charity.”

Zeitgeist 77’s Stephen Chopper Harrison adds, “There was such a nice feel in the studio and it was very humbling when we were joined by people who had once been homeless themselves. I really hope the CD makes a lot of money to help them.”

The 3-track CD is available from the bands, local record shops and from their JustGiving page.

PENNY BLACK REMEDY FRONTMAN UNVEILS SOLO DEBUT!

keith-sv-vlaho-bw

Frontman of London folk/punk/ska band THE PENNY BLACK REMEDY, KEITH M THOMSON releases his debut solo album this week.

It’s Not A Matter Of Space was written, performed, recorded and mixed by Keith and features additional vocals by long-time musical collaborator and co-singer of The Penny Black Remedy, Marijana Hajdarhodzic.

Released on Mono Del Mundo Records through Cadiz, it’s available now from Keith’s website.

On the writing, recording and release of his debut solo album, and on why he is presenting new material as a solo artist, Keith explains….

“Over the last two years or so, I’ve written a lot of new songs, many of which I felt didn’t quite fit within the ‘musical and lyrically stylistic remit’ (which granted, is fairly broad) of The Penny Black Remedy. But I really liked a lot of the songs and felt it would be a shame for them to kind of metaphorically sit idly and gather dust exclusively in my own (non-metaphorical) head. So basically, I just decided to perform, record and release the material myself, on a new label, and under my own name. I think the solo material differs (in my mind, fairly radically) in a few different ways to TPBR; the songs themselves are structurally quite different (being less cross-genre and ostensibly less ‘upbeat’, tempo-wise) and I guess thematically, the overall mood is a shade ‘darker’. This in turn has made this album sound quite spacious and has conceivably given it a more ‘cinematic/soundtrack’ feel; lyrically, the songs are less obviously, (and perhaps less flippantly), autobiographical and are a lot more narrative based, making them a bit more ambiguous and allegorical, subject-wise. A friend who had an early listen to the album said he thought it sounded like the ‘musical equivalent of a movie jointly directed by John Waters, John Ford and David Lynch’. I liked that. It kind of summed the whole thing up. For me, anyway.”

Keith plans to perform material from his debut album live at choice events throughout the course of 2017, both with a full band (with some very special guests to be announced soon) and as a stripped down acoustic version accompanied by Marijana Hajdarhodzic. Keith is also planning to release a follow up solo album in the Spring of 2017..

Check out the video for ‘No Strangers Here’.

Essex post-punks MODERN ENGLISH have unveiled a first single from their forthcoming new album, as well as announcing a London show.

‘You’re Corrupt’ is the first track to be revealed from Take Me To The Trees, their first album to feature (most of) their original line-up of Robbie Grey, Gary McDowell, Mick Conroy and Stephen Walker years.

The album was recorded at Asylum Studios on the former Bentwaters airbase in Suffolk with producer Martyn Young of COLOURBOX. Since then, the band has been on tour in the U.S. celebrating their classic 1981 debut album Mesh & Lace.

Funded through PledgeMusic Take Me To The Trees is set for release on 24 February and is available to pre-order here.

They’ve also announced a show at the 100 Club, London on Wednesday 8 March. Tickets are available here.

Formed in Colchester in 1979, Modern English signed to 4AD before finding significant success in the States, alongside the likes of SIMPLE MINDS, GANG OF FOUR and PSYCHEDELIC FURS, thanks in part the the advent of MTV. Their song ‘I Melt With You’ has since become a staple of film soundtracks, TV ads and cover versions and, like ‘Pretty In Pink’ even had a film named after it. Having originally split in 1987 and reformed with various line-up in the intervening years, this formation has been active since 2010.
