THE REBELLES VIDEO EXCLUSIVE!

Rock ‘n’ roll harmony trio THE REBELLES have made a new video for their upcoming debut single and are launching it exclusively with Vive Le Rock!

Comprising Tracie Hunter, Elizabeth Westwood and Phoebe White, The Rebelles deliver unique, heartfelt takes on classic tracks from the punk and glam eras, often with a little help from the folks who made the songs famous.

Their timely take on the BOWIE-penned / MOTT-recorded glam hymn ‘All The Young Dudes’ hears them joined on backing vocals and acoustic guitar by Ian Hunter, who revisits the track he and Mott took to number 3 in 1972.  Bass is provided by the SEX PISTOLS’ Glen Matlock, while James Stevenson (THE CULT, GENERATION X), and Neil Gabbitas lend their guitar skills.

The accompanying video was filmed by Billy Boyd Cape during the star-studded recording sessions for the single, and captures the intuitive vocal interplay, intense chemistry, and infectious sense of fun, which lend the Rebelles’ special guest-filled live shows the feel of an intimate jam session crossed with an all-star stage invasion.

rebelles

‘All The Young Dudes’ is released on 18 March via Turtle Recordings, and is the first single to be taken from a forthcoming album that’s set to feature cameos by Mick Jones, Clem Burke, Chris Spedding, Slim Jim Phantom and Kenney Jones (readers may like to hazard a guess at the tracklisting based on those names). Tracie says, “expect to hear ten songs on this album that you already love, that will make you smile when you realise what it is, expect to hear a punk attitude draped in silk with a few sharp edges. Expect to escape for a while with us”.

WIRE’S NEW KOREA MOVE!

wire

Watford’s art-punk overlords WIRE have announced the release of a new mini-album in April.

Nocturnal Koreans follows relatively quickly on the heels of last year’s widely acclaimed self-titled album, whose sessions apparently formed the basis of this new release. It’s out on 22 April through their own Pink Flag label.

Listen to the title-track and new single here.

Wire’s Colin Newman says of the release, “The WIRE album was quite respectful of the band, and Nocturnal Koreans is less respectful of the band—or, more accurately, it’s the band being less respectful to itself—in that it’s more created in the studio, rather than recorded basically as the band played it, which was mostly the case with WIRE. A general rule for this record was: any trickery is fair game, if it makes it sound better.”

Guitarist Matthew Simms adds, “It’s a great snapshot of touring America and when I hear or play that song, it reminds me of the many weird and wonderful times, places and people that cross your path.”

The band has a series of dates lined up throughout the Spring, including an appearance at the DRIVE LIKE JEHU-curated ATP festival in Prestatyn. Full dates are….

10 March    Lewes, England – Con Club
11 March    Bath, England – Komedia
12 March    Manchester, England – Cosmosis Festival
22-24 April    Prestatyn, Wales – ATP
27-29 May   Madrid, Spain – GetMAD! Festival

VIBRATORS 40th ANNIVERSARY THIS WEEKEND!

The Vibrators

As THE VIBRATORS gear up for a tour-de-force show celebrating 40 years of the band, including appearances from the classic line ups, original guitarist John Ellis takes Vive Le Rock back to his formative days as an aspiring musician.

“I was a lover of music, the thing is probably my mum actually, she was a big Lonnie Donegan fan; every time we were on holiday, in places like Great Yarmouth, at that time bands used to play those kind of gigs, summer residences, on the pier. Cliff and the Shadows had been around a long time as well, so I saw Cliff and The Shadows do pantomime, so I was well into the twangy guitars! And also the Beatles were coming through when I was eleven or twelve, and that was pretty amazing. But prior to that I’d seen Lonnie Donegan live a few times.

“Now I teach blues guitar workshops and I’m a massive fan of the blues, it’s one of the main musics for me; but what I didn’t realise when I was a young man, eight or nine years old – and why would I have done – but I was actually witnessing the birth of the British blues boom. Lonnie Donegan was almost single handedly responsible for creating what you could call that blues revival, him and Alexis Corner, and those few people were responsible for bringing over those blues greats. And out of those little bands, you’ve got your Eric Claptons and your Jeff Becks and your Jimmy Pages. You’ve got your burgeoning birth of the British blues. And of course British blues went on to become rock music and then went on to become, eventually, punk and everything else.

“That was my background as a musician and I’d fiddled around with a guitar – my gran had bought me a guitar and everything. But I never really got into guitar (until) I started Bazooka Joe with my friend Daniel. You’re probably talking about ‘68, we were probably doing those Hampstead Town Hall gigs. After I left (Daniel) carried it on, so he’d have much more understanding of the history of the band, and of course Adam Ant became a member of Bazooka Joe – and the first ever Sex Pistols gig was supporting Bazooka Joe!”

The Vibrators play the O2 Academy Islington on February 27th.

THE SPECIALS ANNOUNCE AUTUMN TOUR!

The tour climaxes with two nights at London’s Troxy venue, and also sees the band returning to Cambridge, scene of their infamous gig on the city’s Midsummer Common in 1981, following which Hall and Jerry Dammers were convicted for public order offences, for allegedly inciting a riot.

SLOBBERBONE COMPILE PRIME CUTS!

slobberbone standing

Texan roots-rockers SLOBBERBONE have their career revisited on a new compilation album out on 1 April.

The Best Of Slobberbone – Bees & Seas compiles tracks from the band’s four albums – Crow Pot Pie, Barrel Chested, Everything You Thought Was Right Was Wrong Today and Slippage – and comes complete with sleevenotes by Patterson Hood of DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS, packaged in a sleeve designed by Will Johnson of fellow Dentonites CENTRO-MATIC.

Released through New West Records, the album is available in double-CD, double-vinyl and digital formats and can be pre-ordered now through the band’s website.

Formed in the early 90s out of the same fertile Denton scene that also spawned LIFT TO EXPERIENCE, THE RIVERBOAT GAMBLERS and BAPTIST GENERALS, Slobberbone fused muscular rock, hillbilly-punk and navel-gazing slacker balladry, topped off by Brent Best’s brilliant storytelling lyrics of mundane, dysfunctional and often quite grim blue-collar lives. Frequent visitors to the UK and Europe, the band split in 2005 only to reform in 2009 for a tour.  A new album was promised but with guitarist Jess Barr quitting in 2014 and Best releasing a solo album Your Dog, Champ last year, Slobberbone remain dormant.

Check out this fan-shot live video of Slobberbone playing their REPLACEMENTS tribute, ‘Placemat Blues’.

STILL HOPE FOR MIDWAY STILL!

MIDWAY-STILL-300x211

South London indie-rockers MIDWAY STILL are back with a brand new album next month.

Go Team No Hope, which features a guest appearance from MOTORHEAD’s Fast Eddie Clarke, is the trio’s fourth album and it’s out through Bitter & Twisted Records on 18 March. You can pre-order it on CD and digital through Bandcamp, with three tracks available for immediate download.

Check out the video for ‘Do One Day’ from the album.

Formed in 1990, Midway Still sported a much harder-rocking sound than the prevailing pre-Britpop UK indie scene, and released two albums, produced by Don Fleming and LEATHERFACE’S Frankie Stubbs, before splitting. They returned in 2010 with a third album Note To Self on Boss Tuneage.

They’re currently planning dates for later in the year, but they’ve already been booked for WONKFEST at Tufnell Park Dome on 2 July.

THE POP GROUP OUT OF THE ATTIC!

Notorious post-punk funk deconstructionists THE POP GROUP have unearthed a long lost video for their classic single ‘We Are All Prostitutes’.

The video was recorded at the Bristol band’s show at London’s Electric Ballroom at the time of the single’s original release in November ’79. Previously unseen, it was recently rediscovered in the attic of video-maker Chris Reynolds and has now gained a new life as the official video for the single’s reissue.

“During my final year at the Film School I had a desire to make film about a Bristol band rather than a London one,” Reynolds explains. “A guy I worked with at the Bristol Hippodrome as a stagehand, said I should meet The Pop Group and sorted out a visit to them rehearsing in a studio near St Pauls in Bristol.

“A few months later, following the recording of the single ‘We Are All Prostitutes’, myself and Simon Fanthorpe, long time buddy and video associate, ended up at the Electric Ballroom in Camden to shoot the band live.

“The band were playing a gig with the GANG OF FOUR and THE SLITS. It was quite simply a wondrous night. We had purloined a couple of black and white Sony Rover half inch video recorders from the London College of Printing and set ourselves up in the auditorium. Simon grabbed a slot near the stage and we turned over. The gig was a belter and all three bands blew us away.

“Editing in the mid to late seventies was as basic as basic can be. Cuts were made with only a terrible accuracy of 4 frames either side of the frame. We found, that a way round this was to sync the decks up by hand any blindly cut in and out manually. Madness. For this reason the tapes were transferred and I processed them through a Colour Video Synthesiser housed at the college. Basically it was a multilevel keyer that colourised and boosted the rushes.

“We hid in the edit suite all night and after several hours of very risky on the fly cutting created the anarchic collage that you see. Its not neat or clever in fact we pulled the plugs and waggled the video connectors to make the images break up more. Nuts.

“It did the job at the time and was seen as pretty unorthodox then, but it has languished in its box in my attic, lost for over 37 years. A belated reunion last year with Mark found me repeatedly trawling through the waist high junk of my attic without success. But, as is so often the way, a search for a serviceable suitcase had me literally tripping over it. I hope it brings you some pleasure.”

pop group

‘We Are All Prostitutes’ is reissued on digital and 7″ formats on Friday 19 February. Their long out of print second studio album, For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? is being reissued the same day.

Reissued and available on CD for the first time, the LP version comes packaged with eight giant original artwork prints on four double-sided posters, and the CD format will include smaller versions of all the posters. Although ‘….Prostitutes’ was omitted from the original pressing of the album, it is now being included on the reissue.

Cleveland, Ohio  duo ARCHIE & THE BUNKERS have unveiled a video for their new single ‘Sally Lou’.

Recording the album with Detroit garage legend Jim Diamond at his Ghetto Recorders studio, Emmett says matter-of-factly, “We drove, set up and recorded pretty much everything. Then, we went back to the hotel and recorded the next day. The next day Jim played us our songs and we liked them.”
