Organisers are delighted to announce that British super-producer Naughty Boy will be supporting Kool and The Gang on The Main Stage on Saturday 19th July.  Naughty Boy has, over the last 12 months, become one of the UK’s most sought-after sound creators.  Reintroducing the charts to the sound of garage beats, house and trip-hop, his work also boasts an epic, dramatic, ethereal quality. With a distinctive feel to his compositions, he has won the acclaim of his peers, while the likes of Tinie Tempah, Professor Green, and Emeli Sandé all appear on Naughty’s critically acclaimed debut UK No. 2 album, ‘Hotel Cabana’.

Indie favourites The Enemy are to hit The Main Stage on Sunday 20th July.  With three top ten albums, including the platinum number one "We’ll Live And Die In These Towns" – a release which has become the soundtrack for a new disaffected generation – The Enemy have enjoyed a fruitful musical career and have shared a stage with some of the biggest and greatest acts in the world including The Rolling Stones, The Sex Pistols, Oasis, The Manic Street Preachers, Ash, Paul Weller and the mighty Bon Jovi.

Legendary Liverpool band The Farm will be performing on The Main Stage on Saturday 19th July.  Over two decades since their million selling album Spartacus reached No 1 in the UK album charts, The group return to GuilFest for the second time with their original line up to play such classic anthems as ‘All Together Now’ and ‘Groovy Train’.  This band went down a storm in 2012 – you don’t want to miss this chance to see them at GuilFest again!

Hip hop and R&B recording artist, rapper-songwriter, and record producer Ms. Dynamite is confirmed for The Main Stage on Saturday 19th July.  Famous for huge hits such as ‘Dy-Na-Mi-Tee’ and ‘Boo’ and recipient of the Mercury Music Prize, two BRIT Awards and three MOBO Awards, Ms Dynamite is an undisputed heavyweight icon of the UK urban music scene.

Indie rockers Space are to perform on The Good Time Guide Stage on Saturday 19th July.  Drawning influence from ’60s groups such as The Kinks, and combining this with imaginative use of electronic instruments, the band came to prominence in the mid-1990s with hit singles such as "Female of the Species", "Neighbourhood" "Avenging Angels" and "The Ballad of Tom Jones" (on which they worked with Cerys Matthews).  They last performed at GuilFest all the way back in 1998, so organisers cannot wait to see them back at the festival this year.

Also confirmed for GuilFest 2014 this week are Irish folk brothers The Fureys (http://www.thefureys.com) and Mr B. The Gentleman Rhymer (http://www.gentlemanrhymer.com) – both performing Saturday 19th July; indie dance act The Other Tribe (http://www.theothertribe.com/), indie rockers The Jokers, (http://jokerband.co.uk/) both on Friday 18th July; and electronic duo The Correspondents (http://www.thecorrespondents.co.uk/) on Sunday 20th July – All on The Good Time Guide Stage.

The Big Cheese Rock Cave now has singer/songwriter Jamie Lenman (http://www.jamielenman.com/music/) and pop punks Gnarwolves (http://gnarwolves.com/) on Friday 18th July and Sunday 20th July respectively; and The Vive Le Rock Stage has just confirmed london ska outfit Imperial Leisure (https://www.facebook.com/imperialleisure) and ska punks Dirty Revolution (http://www.dirtyrevolution.co.uk/) on Saturday 19th July; and 2 toners Newtown Kings on Sunday 20th July.

As well as all this there are two new huge confirmations on The Kane FM presents Funky End Dance Tent:

Bristol bassheads My Nu Leng (http://www.black-butter.co.uk/my-nu-leng/) on Saturday 19th July and Deep house DJs Mak and Pasteman(https://www.facebook.com/MakandPasteman)  on Friday 18th July.

This year you can catch possibly the most eclectic line up ever at GuilFest, with a fine mix of some of the best live music, comedy and theatre you could possibly hope to see at a festival!  All around the site this year you will find pockets of brilliance, with new and exciting areas such as The Spaced Inn, combined with GuilFest favourites such as La Discotheque, Farmer Giles Barndance, The Acoustic Lounge and much more!

All this, combined with impromptu street performances, food and drink from around the world, great stalls, cocktail bars, our MASSIVE 150’ bar, goes to create one of the most laid back and friendly vibes of any festival ever.  There is even Guildford Lido for outdoor swimming and showers, and Guildford Spectrum leisure centre for indoor swimming and various other activities right next door!

British dance music DJ pioneer Norman Jay MBE will be performing on The Main Stage at GuilFest on Sunday 20th July.  Arguably one of the finest and most respected deejays in the world today, Jay is best known for playing house, funk and soul among many other genres of dance music to huge audiences across the globe since the early 1980’s.  A founding member of the original KISS radio station and owner of The Good Times Soundsystem -yearly attracting thousands of people to their stage at Notting Hill Carnival – he is also the celebrity DJ of choice, having been asked to play at private events for such names as Sir Mick Jagger, Robert De Niro, Michael Caine, George Michael, Will Smith and Prince to name but a few!  A former regular in the dance tent, Jay has not played the festival now for many years and organisers are delighted to welcome him back to GuilFest to play on The Main Stage for the very first time.

Electro-dub pioneers Dreadzone return to The Good Time Guide Stage at GuilFest on Sunday 20th July.  Dreadzone formed in 1993 when ex-Big Audio Dynamite drummer Greg Roberts teamed up with Tim Bran. The duo were soon joined by bassist Leo Williams with keyboard player Dan Donovan, also formerly of Big Audio Dynamite, completing the group’s first line-up. A festival favourite, Dreadzone opened the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury in 1994 and began to bring their unique blend of electro, dub and reggae to a wider audience, going on to chart seven top 60 singles (including their top 20 hit ‘Little Britain’).  The band have always been known for their explosive live performances, so it’s no surprise they’re still going strong after 20 years.

Eastenders star Shane Richie and his band The Prelude are confirmed for The Main Stage at GuilFest on Sunday 20th July.  Forming the band in 2010, Shane Richie says he had one goal in mind, “to simply be the most foot stomping, arm waving, crowd pleasing, never to be forgotten band on the circuit.” Taking time between his adventures on Albert Square and having a No. 1 hit "I’m Your Man" for Children in Need, Shane and the band have become firm favourites on the club & festival circuit both here in the UK and internationally.  The band are currently in the studio recording their debut single for release later in the year.

Hardcore English punks Feed The Rhino are confirmed to support Gallows in The Big Cheese Rock Cave at GuilFest, also on Sunday 20th July.  Since forming from what the band call “the grim depths of the river Medway”, Feed The Rhino have been tearing the UK apart with a live show that’s warranted countless rave reviews from every top dog in the business.  With Big Cheese, Metal Hammer, Kerrang and Rocksound all singing the band’s praises this should be a show to watch out for!

Punk poet Itch – formerly of The King Blues – will also be performing on The Big Cheese Cave on Sunday 20th July. Itch’s unique brand of beats and poetry will no doubt go down a storm at GuilFest.  Described by critics as one of the UK’s finest and most authentic songwriters, his latest album The Deep End seems to hit hard in all the right places.

Local Farnham based rockers Canterbury will hit The Big Cheese Cave on Friday 18th July.  Canterbury can easily lay claim to being one of the UK’s best emerging rock bands, with fantastic album reviews from top music mags, strong radio support, and sold out UK tours with artists such as You Me At Six, The Blackout and Deaf Havana.

Also confirmed for the Big Cheese Cave are metal act Servers and pop punks of the moment ReVerbed, both performing on Saturday 19th July.

The Vive Le Rock Stage is really beginning to take shape with a whole host of new confirmations: The Vibrators hit the stage on Friday 18th July, The Sex Pistols Experience, The Urban Voodoo Machine and Bermondsey Joyriders all play on Saturday 19th July, while The Ramonas and Electric River are confirmed for Sunday 20th July.

Lastly, but by no means least, local singer/songwriter Kamla will be entertaining crowds on The Good Time Guide Stage on Sunday 20th July.

There are still many more acts to be announced on all the stages.  Remember though, GuilFest is not just about the music and throughout the site there are many activities and shows to keep you entertained all weekend.  The Cosmic Comedy Tent, The Man In The Moon Theatre Tent – featuring performances from burlesque cabaret to Shakespeare, The Brand New Spaced Inn, La Discotheque, Farmer Giles’ Barn Dance, Massive 150ft Beer Tent, Art & Craft Village, Calypso Cocktail Bar, street performers, food stalls from around the world, the amazing Kidzone and much, much more! Remember that the Guildford Spectrum Leisure Centre and Lido are right next door – bring your swimming togs and cool off by the pool between bands, or simply go for a refreshing shower!

New York Alternative Hip Hop Trio FUN LOVIN’ CRIMINALS will be hitting The Main Stage on Friday 18th July, supporting The Boomtown Rats.  Most famous for their all time classic anthem “Scooby Snacks”, as well as “King Of New York”, “The Fun Lovin’ Criminal” and their absurdly catchy tribute to the late great Barry White, “Love Unlimited” FLC have released a total of 6 studio albums since their inception in 1993 and are still going strong.  Fronted by the charismatic Radio 6 music host Huey Morgan, the band are renowned for their explosive live sets and having not performed at GuilFest since their unforgettable performance back in 2002, this will definitely be a show to catch!

Organisers are delighted to announce that 70’s rockers SLIM CHANCE, the band formed by the legendary late Ronnie Lane following his departure from The Faces are to perform on The Good Time Guide Stage on Friday 18th July.  Featuring original members Steve Simpson, Charlie Hart, Steve Bingham, Alun Davies and Colin Davey, this will be a rare opportunity to hear Ronnie’s much celebrated melodies, played as they were always meant to be heard, in the true spirit of the bands previous incarnations.  This will be a performance that will celebrate the huge range of Ronnie’s music, bringing it to ears that may have never got the opportunity the first time round.

One of the UK’s foremost underground rock bands, THE BLACKOUT are to return to GuilFest to headline The Big Cheese Rock Cave, also on Friday 18th July.  Formed in 2003 in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, The Blackout have a huge legion of devoted fans – as illustrated quite clearly during their now famous previous headline performances at Stoke Park.  With four hugely successful studio albums under their collective belts, numerous awards and nominations, enormous gigs all over the world, as well as support from such household names as Radio 1’s Zane Lowe, The Blackout are sure not to disappoint with what will be a stunning set from these Welsh rock heroes.

THE SKINTS will be back at GuilFest doing exactly what they do best – sending crowds into a frenzy – on The Vive Le Rock Stage on Sunday 20th July.  Creators of ‘East London Reggae’ – a volatile mix of reggae, ska, dub, punk, and hip hop that sets arenas everywhere alight with that unique vibe only they can provide, The Skints have toured extensively, performing hundreds of shows with bands including The King Blues, The Beat, Reel Big Fish, and Bedouin Soundclash to name but a few.  With plenty of airtime on Radio 1 lately as well as massive viral social media success and sell out shows up and down the UK, this band are as hot as they come right now.  One thing is for sure – The Vive Le Rock Stage will be ‘skanking’ room only during this electric performance!

Singer songwriter sisters, WARD THOMAS, will be performing their special brand of country music to crowds on The Good Time Guide Stage, also on Sunday 20th July.  Brought up on a livestock farm in nearby Petersfield, Lizzie and Catherine have been taking the country scene by storm since the release of their debut EP “Footnotes” in 2013.  The last 12 months has seen strong public reviews, a very successful small venue tour, appearances on US radio stations, multiple awards, and then airplay on Radio 2 as well as support from Terry Wogan for these talented twins.

Hannah Wants brings her hard hitting bass house style to The Kane FM Presents Funky End Dance Tent on Friday 18th July.  A leading lady of the scene with a concrete reputation for her unique and commanding flair, the hype currently surrounding Miss Wants is well deserved and her worldwide success with every release stands as testament to this.  Revellers can expect to be taken on an epic musical journey full of infectious rhythms and only the heaviest of basslines.

Radio 1’s future music digital soundgirl B.Traits will also be ripping up The Kane FM Presents Funky End Dance Tent on Saturday 19th July.  With a style that incorporates everything from breakbeats, jungle, drum and bass, reggae, dancehall to garage, hip hop and funky house, Canadian born B’s DJ sets are known far and wide for their truly eclectic appeal.

As usual GuilFest continues to break the mould, bringing its inimitable line ups to Stoke Park with something for the entire family.  There are many more acts still to be announced for this year’s GuilFest – The line up is set to grow to a total of over 200 fantastic performances!  As well as music, elsewhere on the site you can find attractions such as La Discotheque, The Cosmic Comedy Zone, The Theatre Tent, Farmer Giles Barndance, the brilliant GuilFest KidZone, and the brand new arts and entertainments area, The Spaced Inn. RECORD STORE DAY SALES BOOM!

 Bowie and Pixies were best-selling artists

6 May 2014: Final UK sales figures have confirmed that Record Store Day 2014 was the most successful yet, with album sales through RSD stores up 30% on last year’s record-breaking event.

The best-selling single was a reissue of David Bowie’s ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide’ on seven inch vinyl. Best-selling album on the day was Indy Cindy, the brand-new album from Pixies.

Overall 245 stores participated and labels and artists produced over 640 exclusive products for the day, both record numbers.

RSD UK coordinator Spencer Hickman, who first launched the Record Store Day concept in the UK in 2008, said, “The statistics continue to show Record Store Day going from strength to strength, but the stats only tell part of the story. Record Store Day is ultimately about record store culture, the committed music fans who run indie record shops and the music fans who queue from early in the morning to get their hands on the music they love and enjoy this one-day celebration of music’s grassroots.”

All around the UK, indie stores laid on special events to build on the festive atmosphere.

·         In Abergavenny, classical store Abergavenny Music decided to enter into the spirit of the day and go beyond its normal genre. “The punk titles went like hotcakes!” said a spokesman. “We had a really good day”;

·         In Sudbury, Suffolk,  Complete  Music attracted crowds of up to 1,000 people;

·         Derricks  in Swansea had to contend with weeping teenage girls when they sold out of their last copy of One Direction’s special 7” vinyl release of ‘Midnight Memories’;

·         Tailbird Records of Chesterfield had six bands perform. “We are already looking forward eagerly to next year’s RSD,” they said;

·         Sick Records in Belfast took the equivalent of five week’s takings in one day;

·         Apollo Music in Paisley was impressed by the distances customers had travelled to visit the store. One had come from Russia!

The  RSD exclusive releases came in a record-breaking 57 collectible formats, ranging from the conventional (7” single, CD) to the completist (9 x 7” box set  plus CD) to the highly unusual (wrestling mask plus download

Of those releases whose origin could be determined, 49% came from the UK and 40% from the US, with 5% coming from third -placed Netherlands. Just 22% came from the three major record companies (Universal, Sony and Warner), with the vast majority coming from independents.

“Major record companies and US repertoire may dominate much of the music industry, but Record Store Day is overwhelmingly about British music and music from independent labels,” says Hickman.

Clampdown on touts

Record Store Day organisers have attempted to clamp down on the activities of those buying Record Store Day exclusives purely to re-sell them. Latest statistics suggest just 1% of RSD exclusives ended up on eBay this year.

“With limited edition product, there will always be some people trying to cash in,” said Hickman, “and ultimately we cannot stop members of the public doing this. However store staff are vigilant and often refuse to sell to those clearly trying to flout the spirit of the day.”

The most re-sold RSD title on eBay in 2014 was Paul Weller’s ‘Brand New Toy’ which was restricted to just 500 copies. “With nearly 250 stores participating in RSD this year, arguably two copies per store was just not enough,” said Hickman. “We will be talking to labels to help them better match supply to demand to thwart the eBay sellers while still retaining the exclusivity of the event.”

All stores participating in Record Store Day have to sign up to a strict code of conduct and any store found to have breached the code is excluded from future participation.

Record Store Day 2015

Next year’s Record Store Day is due to take place on April 18.

Paul Quirk, Chairman of the Entertainment Retailers Association which organises the event, said, “There’s no doubt that Record Store Day has earned its place in the music calendar. Conversations have already begun to build on this year’s success to make 2015’s Record Store Day even better.”

GODFATHERS ANNOUNCEMENT

 Godfathers’ founder members Peter Coyne & Chris Coyne accused guitarist Del Bartell & drummer Grant Nicholas of being “musical whores whose only motivation is money & with no sense of responsibility toward their fans” after the guitarist & drummer announced they were leaving the band just days before 2 concerts in London & Brighton with no time for the group to find any suitable replacements.

The Coyne brothers promised a return to the classic two guitar line-up of The Godfathers with this recent message on Facebook:

“The Godfathers require TWO rocking guitarists & ONE rocking drummer!! Any serious musicians with a knowledge & genuine love of The Godfathers’ music & rock & roll music in general should please contact The Godfathers’ founder members Peter Coyne & Chris Coyne via petercoyne77@gmail.com & also christopher.coyne@virginmedia.com Del Bartell & Grant Nicholas announced yesterday they have left The Godfathers, so therefore unfortunately the concerts this weekend at The Underworld in London on Saturday May 3rd & The Prince Albert in Brighton on Sunday May 4th are CANCELLED!! Ticket refunds for both concerts are available from point of purchase…The Godfathers apologise for this situation – we shall return BIGGER, STRONGER & BETTER than before!!! PS Please share this post with friends/anyone who might be interested…”

Peter & Chris Coyne also commented “Bartell & Nicholas threatened to walk out of the group before, during & toward the end of our recent UK tour with Stiff Little Fingers & also before 2 recent concerts in Ireland. The London & Brighton shows were originally cancelled in November last year due to Bartell’s health problems & we all agreed to reschedule those concerts & also take a massive reduction in our fee so as not to disappoint any fans who’d bought tickets & also to compensate promoters who were left out of pocket. Now our former guitarist & drummer have gone back on that agreement leaving The Godfathers, their fans & promoters high & dry. We certainly had no complaints from them when they made some great money performing concerts with the band all round the world in the past 5 years. In the long run we will be better off without their negative, destructive input, we want to work with talented people who are seriously passionate about working with The Godfathers. The Godfathers are like Doctor Who – we regenerate every few years to survive. Long live The Godfathers.”

The Godfathers’ brothers Peter & Chris Coyne are currently writing songs & tunes for their follow-up album to the critically acclaimed ‘Jukebox Fury’. The (as yet untitled) new studio album is expected to be released sometime in 2015, which (coincidentally) will be 30 years since the formation of the band.

CHELSEA FOR VIVE LE ROCK STAGE at GUILFEST

 1970’s Punk rockers Chelsea are confirmed to support Sham 69 (Original Line Up featuring Jimmy Pursey) on The Vive Le Rock Stage on Friday 18th July.  Chelsea was one of the original punk bands to form out of the mid-70s punk frenzy that marked a generation. Fronted by Gene October, Chelsea has gone through almost as many personnel changes as Art-Punk outfit The Fall! The subject matter most often sung about was the plight of the working class and youth gone wild and the original line-up consisted of October on vocals as well as guitarist William Broad who would be later better known later as Billy Idol!
