CLASH ON 6 MUSIC THIS SUNDAY

This coming Sunday Cerys Matthews show on 6 Music is devoted to the Clash and includes an interview with all three surviving members of the band. Vive le Rock’s Andy Peart was one of the lucky members of the audience at the Maida Vale recording of the show and reported back that it’s well worth a listen and will contain at least a couple of things you probably didn’t know about the Clash.

Full details below: Sunday 6 October Cerys on 6 Music 10am-midday Cerys Matthews hosts an audience with The Clash at the legendary BBC Maida Vale studios. In this exclusive, intimate and very special interview, the band talks candidly about their career and affection for the late singer Joe Strummer. The surviving members - Mick Jones, Topper Headon and Paul Simonon - reveal some of their long-held secrets, such as how they recorded the end of I Fought The Law in a public toilet and how some of the sounds on Guns Of Brixton were made by the band pulling bits of velcro apart in the recording studio. Recorded in the Bing Crosby studio at Maida Vale on 6 September, around 150 6 Music listeners successfully gained a place to be in the audience and were able to pose questions to the band. During the show, Cerys is also joined by Johnny Green, the Clash's tour manager from 1977 to 1980, who tells some brilliant anecdotes about his time on the road with the band. Cerys says: “Listening to the classic recordings after a re-mastering by Mick Jones threw up a slew of musical questions whose answers were things as random as urinals flushing and Velcro being pulled. The band were on top form, chatting about the early days, touring and Joe Strummer's under-piano lyric writing. Through the interview I played music by artists they love like Grandmaster Flash, Bo Diddley, Groundhogs and Bettye Layette. I also enjoyed talking with long-time fried and tour manager Johnny Green about the scrapes their open-door policy got them in to.”

JOHNNY MOPED-TONIGHT!

downloads.openimp.com_id_vU8aACBmi2G0_cldeddbidq

 PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT!

BASICALLY, JOHNNY MOPED

FILM PREMIERE AND LIVE SHOW – TONIGHT!

KOKO (The MUSIC MACHINE) CAMDEN, LONDON 19th SEPT 2013

Formed in 1974 by a group of school friends from Croydon, Johnny Moped were the band fronted by, and named after the enigmatic Paul Halford (aka Johnny Moped). By 1977 the group found themselves at the heart of the burgeoning punk scene in London and for a brief moment even looked like contenders.

‘When I first met Johnny,’ Captain Sensible – the band’s original guitarist – says, ‘I just thought, this guy is a bundle of frenetic energy; he’s a megastar waiting to happen.’

By 1978, after an intense year of activity, the band were completing their first record with Chiswick Records and things were looking promising. But whilst adding the final touches to the record, Johnny – who had recently married – started to become evasive as his mother-in-law exerted pressure on him to leave the group. “In the end we had to basically kidnap him every time we had a gig or needed to record!’ said Dave Berk, the bands drummer.

Despite being able to count both Chrissie Hynde and Captain Sensible as past members, success was not to come their way and Johnny Moped are now largely forgotten – punk rock’s great lost band!

Their story is however a fascinating one that, along with some of the era’s most innovative music deserves to be heard.

They have set up a shop which has some really rare and interesting posters, records and other memorabilia on it…click the picture below…

AND LASTLY… A PLUG FOR OUR JOHNNY MOPED ALBUM…

CANADIAN PUNKS-THE STANSFIELDS HIT LONDON MONDAY!

SEE THE STANFIELDS!

Canadian Celtic punk rockers The Stanfields (FFO: The Dropkick Murphys, Street Dogs) bring their raucous live show to London (upstairs at the Garage) on 23rd September and we’re offering you the chance to win a pair of tickets to check out this stunning band.

First, here’s a bit more info on the band and their new album.

The Stanfields attract fans of all classes and creeds with their rhythm-fueled hard rock laced with traditional roots sounds. There are no glamorous motives – just five working class Canadians with an honest desire to entertain. With the help of iconic producer Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Metallica, Aerosmith) The Stanfields better capture the intensity of their riotous live show on their new album ‘Death & Taxes’ with harder, faster and full-on thunderous waves of rhythm and roaring harmonies behind menacing leads.

“We’ve grown to be louder, faster versions of ourselves. Many thousands of road and air miles, and all the trappings therein, tend to have that kind of effect on a band like ours,” Jon explains. “Where ‘Vanguard’ is all over the place stylistically, ‘Death & Taxes’ is more focused on our rock and roll influences.”

To be in with a chance of winning simply email comps@bigcheesemagazine.com with your full name and ‘I WANNA SEE THE STANFIELDS’ as the email subject.

Check out the band’s video for ‘Death & Taxes’ below.

www.undercoverfest.com

For Immediate Release News Release 18th September 2013

While this festival is in Surrey you won’t find any of that reality TV / Surrey Hills (Show) B***** / Rubbish here!!

2 days to go and this New and Independent Festival is here!!

As the Summer festival season draws to a close for another year the festival spirit is far from over and this festival presents a veritable fest of alternative (ish) musical delights collectively called “The Undercover Festival”

With ticket sales now picking up the organisers of the festival are confident that this event will be a success.

Our line up is attracting ticket sales from all over England and further afield from Jersey, Ireland, Belgium, Denmark and Poland.

We believe that we have the right venue, the best bands to suit what we are aiming to achieve and all at a reasonable price compared to many other festivals of this size.

Please note: For the avoidance of any doubt The Undercover Festival is not an open air festival – the festival will be held in 2 rooms and a marquee at the Bisley Pavilion – undercover by nature of the music policy of this festival and undercover – well because it is….

Dreadzone, The Cockney Rejects, The Skints, The Glitter Band, 999, Stone Foundation, Chelsea, TV Smith, The Bermondsey Joyriders, Louise Distras, New Town Kings, Dirty Revolution, The Brompton Mix, GLITTER BOX BURLESQUE + many many more

44 Bands / artists over 2 stages + The Vive Le Classique Dancehall DJs playing vinyl only + The Buskers Corner plus so much more

Ranging from internationally renowned performers to established acts nationally and a lot of promising local talent complete the line up of this new festival to hit Surrey on the 20th & 21st Sept at the Bisley Pavilion Brookwood near Surrey

Punk, Ska, Northern, Indie, Alternative, Retro & Acoustic + all at a bargain price; what more can you ask for?

At this festival we have acts that are internationally and nationally renowned but what will also be special about this festival is the amount of acts we have booked with local links.

Woking, Surrey and the South East have a rich musical heritage (The Jam, The Stranglers, Sham 69 etc), however contemporary music across Surrey and the South East to many is not as ground breaking and vibrant as those days, we believe that musical talent covering many genres and ages is still vibrant today but mostly undiscovered by the wider local community – our message to the community is come on down to the festival and see this rich line up of talent from Woking / Surrey / The South East / South Coast and beyond for yourselves”.

Supporting 3 worthy causes

At this festival we are providing 40 plus top acts / cracking DJs etc BUT we will also be urging support for 3 worthy causes; 2 that are local to Woking and one that is a national campaign, there will be a stall at the festival and a bucket collection.

The Sophie Lancaster Foundation

The Phoenix Cultural Centre

Woking & Sam Beare Hospices a worthy cause in our book that serves the community well

DEAD KENNEDYS were one of the most popular and important American hardcore punk bands of the late ’70s/early ’80s. They formed in San Francisco in 1978 when EAST BAY RAY placed an ad in a music paper that vocalist JELLO BIAFRA responded to. They were soon joined by bassist KLAUS FLOURIDE, drummer TED and a second guitarist known to posterity simply as 6025. The latter departed in March 1979, while Ted was replaced at the very end of 1980 by D.H. PELIGRO.

After a brief rehearsal period, Dead Kennedys played their first gig at Mabuhay Gardens in July 1978. The “Fab Mab” was a Filipino restaurant in San Francisco’s North Beach section that served as a home to punk bands for nearly ten years. It wasn’t too long before the band gained a considerable following around San Francisco. Live, DKs were a combination of chaos and theatrics. Their sound could be described as a cross between the Sex Pistols and the Ventures.

Dead Kennedys’ early success led them to record their first single, “California Über Alles,” in 1979, a blistering attack on the then Governor of California, Jerry Brown. It was released on their own label in the USA, Alternative Tentacles Records, set up by East Bay Ray. That single was later issued in Britain on the indie label Fast Products. “Holiday in Cambodia” (1980) followed and is perhaps the band’s definitive moment – a perfect mix of hilarious yuppie-baiting lyrics and evil-sounding music. Almost as essential were “Kill The Poor” (1980) and “Too Drunk To Fuck” (remarkably, a British Top 40 single in 1981) and the debut LP, FRESH FRUIT FOR ROTTING VEGETABLES (1980). That LP went on to be awarded a Gold Record in Britain.

Underpinned by an acute sense of humor, early songs such as “Let’s Lynch The Landlord,” “I Kill Children” and “Chemical Warfare” satirized the twin elements of extreme violence and conservatism that characterize much of American life. Dead Kennedys’ inflammatory name and provocative behavior (in one 1979 prank, Biafra ran for mayor of San Francisco – and came in fourth) attracted the attention of a number of far-right politico-religious groups. The band’s problems with these self-appointed moral guardians were compounded by a confrontational relationship with US authorities, ensuring an aggressive police presence at most of their gigs. But the band continued to expand their audience by playing at a mix of underground venues in different corners of the USA and Canada. They did their first British tour in late 1980, which established the band there as a figurehead for an audience long deprived of the Pistols, Biafra stage-diving to great enthusiasm. Dead Kennedys went on to tour worldwide, covering the continents of North America, Europe and Australia.

The eight-track EP, IN GOD WE TRUST INC. (1981), took things further, boasting a speed and power that left most reviewers nonplussed and contemporaries trailing. The EP included a wild cover of "Rawhide" and “Nazi Punks, Fuck Off,” an anti-violence paean. The band then changed musical gears again when the PLASTIC SURGERY DISASTERS appeared in late 1982. Possibly their best album, this fine collection of songs retained the trademark savagery and satire, but the musical content had diversified, even including such unexpected moments as Klaus Flouride playing clarinet. Featured were the singles “Bleed for Me” and “Halloween,” and it also included "Moon Over Marin," as close as Dead Kennedys ever came to a ballad, albeit with anti-pollution lyrics.

After two years of touring, where they performed all over North America, Europe and Australia, the more melodic FRANKENCHRIST (1985) appeared, marked by a frantic sense of desperation that reflected America’s increasingly right-wing political landscape and with songs like "MTV Get Off the Air." As ever, the group ran into controversy, this time with the LP’s accompanying poster, “Penis Landscape,” by Swiss artist H. R. Giger. Detailing several rows of copulating genitalia, it provoked a legal offensive against the band beginning in April 1986. As well as having his flat torn apart by the police, Biafra was charged with “distributing harmful matter to minors,” a charge which he repulsed on the basis of the First Amendment right to free speech and which was dismissed the following year. But before the controversy, the band made the decision to disband in January 1986 and decided to complete the recording BEDTIME FOR DEMOCRACY, released later that year. The band rocked as tight as ever, with Ray’s voodoo/surf guitar, Flouride’s thumping bass and Peligro’s skin bashing providing the perfect “sturm und drang” for Biafra’s words.

GIVE ME CONVENIENCE OR GIVE ME DEATH, a fantastic collection of their classic early singles and B sides, rare tracks and compilation tracks, was released in 1987.

STEVE IGNORANT-ALBUM BY PUNK LEGEND AND LIFEBOAT VOLUNTEER

https:__gallery.mailchimp.com_808e90db6b994977cb0e08bb8_images_Steve_Ignorant

Steve Ignorant
Anarchist punk rocker turned Lifeboat Volunteer

Notorious anarchist punk rocker turned lifeboat volunteer, Steve Ignorant, has just completed the recording of a new album with Irish Punk Rockers, Paranoid Visions. The album entitled “When..?” will be launched in Dublin on November 1st and London November 9th with worldwide release set for November 11th.

Co-Founder of ‘70’s punk giants Crass, who were outselling AC/DC in the early 1980’s (but from a communal farm house in Epping rather than from a major record label), were famously referred to in the House of Lords and at one stage were contacted by the KGB following their “thatchergate”  tapes detailing conspiracy theories about the sinking of the Belgrano during the Falklands war. Crass who’s logo has been worn by the likes of Angelina Jolie and David Beckham, split in 1984 and this project marks the first recordings since the mid 1990’s for Steve Ignorant.

Following his retirement from music in the 1990’s, Steve was persuaded to join the Sea Palling voluntary life boat crew after donating £1000 of musical proceeds to them.

In the recent documentary he says “When the pager goes I jump out of my skin” before telling his partner Jona that he loves her….. because every time it goes off they put their lives on the line.

IMPERIAL LEISURE-SKA PUNKS ON THE LOOSE!

Imperial Leisure New Album and New Tour Dates

"Like a coiled spring" is how front man D-boy-D-nice describes the current mood of Imperial Leisure. Hard at work on their third album and things are going great, yet being bound to the studio is frustrating for a band that lives for the live event.

However, soon the wait shall be over! Salvation comes in the form of ALTSKA ON AVON at the Fleece in Bristol on September 15th: Imperial Leisure join forces with an awesome selection of up and coming Ska inspired bands including THE MUGNUS PUTO. Then it’s back to tour mode in November, kicking things off in a big way by sharing the stage with none other than KING PRAWN on their much anticipated come back tour (Imperial Leisure supporting on

various dates most notably London KOKO Nov’24th)!

2014 is set to be a big year for these booze fuelled reprobates so keep your eyes and ears open.
